semi-seriouspost: why does this cult of personality leader worship poo poo seem so prevalent with russians? in most western countries the majority of ppl maintain at least some (usually a whole lot) of skepticism towards our governments/leaders, with only the most insufferable koolaid drinking partisans lining up to suck their dick (and even then only if it's their guy) because we know they're just flawed lovely human beings but with russia it's like the majority are totally up the rear end of whoever the head honcho is even if its literally stalin

Fojar38 posted:i remember that someone said that russia is an example of a country that left the middle ages with basically no reforms whatsoever and i found that an apt explanation Yeah that's it. Looking back at Russia from when it got started, you had several hundreds of years living under the Mongols, a people that will murder you for looking at them funny. Then you had several hundreds of years where you were a serf(literally property) under the all-powerful Tsars. Then you had the revolution where the Tsar and all nobility was murdered, followed by purges of intelligentsia and free thinkers during the USSR years. Falling into line/keeping your head down has been the Russian survival mechanism since it began as Muscovy.

It's interesting to me that the nation that resisted a past age's modernity was the most susceptible to marxist revolution. i think it probably figures into why current communist states are professed marxist but are highly imperialist with exceptionally undemocratic methods of capital control, even more so than in capitalist states what lovely devices they are, cheaper labor and the sheer propaganda of them

Russia had stop/start modernization and one of the moves away from serfdom were collectively owned farms, which didn't really survive the revolution. Richard Pipes' A Brief History of the Russian Revolution is a good read, just keep in mind that he was one of Reagan's top fear-mongers about the 'inherently evil and aggressive' Soviet mindset. He more or less blames Communists for the Holocaust because a number of Bolsheviks were Jewish and triggered reactionary antisemitism in Germany.

Looking back at what actually happened after the revolution, the Bolsheviks were just one party of many struggling for influence. They weren't the biggest nor the strongest. The Anarchists were actually the big dog at one point. But what the Bolsheviks did is they made alliances and pacts to give them time to get stronger, and then back-stabbed their allies when they no longer needed them to fight their enemies for them. They were vicious.

Also that the next presidential election may well be between a man whose only obvious qualifications are that both his dad and his older brother were president and a woman who at least has a good education but whose main qualifications are (i)she is married to a former president and (ii) she has experience in senior positions that she got because she was married to a president. At least in Russia when this poo poo happens it's a hot Ukranian prosecutor lady.

Most of the those people werent popular when they were in charge except for Washington. Washington is the closest thing to cult of personality we've ever had when they were alive. and even he had a vocal minority of people who hated him. You should look up what a cult of personality is its not the simple veneration of past leaders.
