Welcome to Neo-Tokyo! I hope you enjoyed your flight! I'm Jane 2.0.3, your virtual intelligence assistant! THI has assigned me to help you orient yourself with your new workplace and responsibilities! I can also help locate lodgings and act as a guide to the city if you desire. I am required by NEG law to inform you that I am not fully sentient. As a virtual intelligence, I am capable of heuristic learning and can handle most conversational forks, but should your requirements exceed my capabilities, you will be referred to an orientation specialist. Please be aware that I am barred from abusive or criminal activities, and am protected from such activities by NEG law. Our first stop will be THI Headquarters! There you will be assigned your company identification cards and software, as well as a defensive ward. Then one of our executive team will conduct a meet and greet to introduce you to THI and our corporate mission! Coffee, tea, and snacks will be provided. Please let me know if you have any special dietary needs or restrictions. Afterwards, your Human Resources representative will conduct you through the onboarding process, covering company benefits such as health, dental, and vision, your insurance and retirement policies, and continuing education opportunities! They will also help you with any necessary registrations, including any restricted para-psychic or arcane abilities, cybernetic implants, controlled organisms - neogenetic, extradimensional, or otherwise - and so forth. If you are aware of a potential registration requirement, please let your HR rep know! Once you're done with HR, Corporate IT and Security will issue any access tokens or special equipment not already provided during the HR process, and review corporate security procedures. Once the initial onboarding requirements are complete, we will be heading to the Yanaka Campus where you will meet your new coworkers! Your line manager will introduce you to the facilities and make sure your workspace is prepared. Then there will be a group meeting so you can get to know everyone! That should be enough for your first day! Your temporary lodgings are ready and your luggage will be delivered there directly, and transportation to them will be provided. There is an optional dinner and introductory party this evening. Don't worry - it really is optional! If you are fatigued from your travel, stay in and rest. Room service is free! If you have questions at any time, just ask! I look forward to working with you! Toku Heavy Industries Looking forward. Welcome to NyarlathoTech! It's like CthuluTech, but without all the rape and misogyny, and about 65% less awful metaplot! Ettin started the original NTech games (as well as a primordial IRC NTech game) since he spent so much time complaining about CTech. As someone who's been playing in the NTech games for a while, and helped out a bit with building it, I decided to run an NTech game of my own. There were two of these, but the second never really got off the ground. Trix recently completed a recruit for a new NTech game about bad people doing bad things to get rich in a magical banana republic. Now I'm running a recruit for a new NTech game to replace the Ashton Foundation Game that didn't make it. That's what this thread is for! THI TIGER TEAM In this game, characters will be employees of Toku Heavy Industries (THI). THI is the largest arcanotechnoloy company in the world. Their focus, as the name suggests, is on industrial and large scale applications. They build power plants, factories, ships, space stations, mecha, arcologies - essentially any big expensive object, dumb or smart. THI has a few subsidiaries that produce consumer goods but it's a small part of the business. They even built a dimensional gate to Deimos. That gate was eventually blown up by Empty Skies, destroying a big chunk of Tokyo and all of Deimos. It would have been even worse if the founder of THI, a brilliant arcanotechnician in his own right, hadn't managed to redirect a lot of the energy, though at the cost of his life. THI rebuilt Neo-Tokyo at-cost, but they haven't messed with gate technology since. At least, not openly. THI has access to huge resources and employs literally millions. This makes it a powerful corporation, but it's so big and has its fingers in so many pies its hard for anyone to know exactly what's going on. It's also involved in pushing the arcanotech state of the art, so it routinely runs into unique problems. This is where you come in. THI maintains a handful of Tiger Teams who have the expertise and authority to go anywhere in the company and do whatever is needed to fix problems. These are described as "teams of undomesticated and uninhibited technical specialists, selected for their experience, energy, and imagination." What this means is that THI hires the best, regardless of their backgrounds, and gives them a long leash to do what's needed when something goes wrong. Members of the team are expected to have several areas of expertise, either when hired or by being trained afterwards, and all of them have combat training, since arcane mishaps have a nasty habit of creating zombies or summoning extradimensional monsters. Not to mention THI's experience with how a seeming technical issue can turn out to be terrorist sabotage... In this game, your PCs are expected to be ridiculously capable. Think of astronauts - thrill-seeking pilots with multiple degrees, or Ph.D.s who happen to be incredibly fit. World-class mountain climber fit. Or another way to put it, the more combat oriented PCs are like spec-ops veterans who used their government benefits to go back to school for a doctorate. Your Tiger Team is a newly formed one. Some of you may be long time THI employees transferred from other areas, others may be recently hired talent from outside. THI has close relationships with most of the big players - the Ashton Foundation, the OOI, NEG departments that deal with infrastructure or procurement, the NEG military, the JSDF, most major universities, etc, etc. People with unusual - self-taught Martian hackers - or less savory backgrounds - reformed Arcane Underground wizards - aren't unheard of either. The Soul Network has infiltrated THI at various points, but that's a secret and the Tiger Teams are under a lot scrutiny. As such, PCs who are current members of the SN aren't going to work. This means that while I'm not going to ban shinigami or tagers - both of which are closely tied to specific SN groups - you'll need to come up with a good reason they've managed to hook up with THI. Keep that in mind when coming up with a character - otherwise just about anything goes! If you have questions, you can ask them here, PM me, or hit me (or Ettin for broader NTech background) up on SynIRC in #redhandofdoom or #persona. Recruitment will run until 10PM Eastern on Sunday, February 15th! Looking for 2-3 additional players. I'm holding a spots for KPrime, Siivola, and Ridley who were in the aforementioned Ashton game that didn't make it. If more spots open up I will let you know. CHARACTER CREATION Character creation will proceed as normal per the Atomic Robo rules - any of the listed methods will work. ick three Modes, one at +3, on at +2, and one at +1. Pretty much any of the example Modes can work, and you can make up your own with the rules from the book. Here's two common Weird Modes right here, plus the list of skills being used. The Science Mode will be used unchanged. For Stress boxes, just divide up 7 total between Physical and Mental. Skills Athletics Burglary Combat Contacts Deceive Empathy Notice Physique Provoke Rapport Stealth Systems Vehicles Will Systems hacking and advanced computer use, costs 1 Hacker (9) Burglary Contacts Deceive Notice Stealth Systems Occult (3) Fields of magical study (Lores) are picked up just like Science! All unimproved Lores are lumped under a Mythos skill. Notice Will RULES QUESTIONS I want to be a wizard, how do I make that happen? You'll want to have it as part of your high concept, and you may want to make a Wizard Mode. Actually casting spells will just be using a Lore skill to create aspects, or handled with a tweaked version of Invention using magical Lores for bigger rituals, or summoning things, or making artifacts. Using magic to fight - to throw fireballs and so forth - is just part of Combat. Stunts and especially Mega-Stunts will help too. What about tagers? Do tagers still do a skill switch? To keep things simple, no. Tager changes will be built as a modified version of a Hardware Mega-Stunt. All Tager transformations should have the Flaw "Vulnerable to Stross Numbers." Then you get some Stunts and Mega-Stunts that you can only use when you switch into your Tager form. You may want a Mode to go with the Tager form as well. Check out the Beast, Dinosaur, and Mutant Modes for examples, as well as stunts a Tager might like. Fuckin' magical girls, how do they work? Here's an intro post about them. The JSDF for example mostly recruits non-magical girls and then give them Hakurei manufactured wands to give them the powers of mahou shoujo. You mentioned Invention, will Brainstorms make an appearance? Yes, though I will probably be using them a bit differently. More to come later. The NyarlathoTech Setting! Background largely supplied by Ettin! quote:Welcome to THI! My name is Takahashi Hikaru. I知 your Business Analyst, and I値l be going over some basic orientation material. Welcome to 2121! Let痴 cover some basics - you probably all know this, but it痴 good to have a shared baseline. The Occult Modern occult research started in the 2020s when people started seriously looking through the eldritch tomes Miskatonic had filed away. Most of the early pioneering work was done by the Ashton Foundation, who developed the Dimensional Engine (a source of effectively limitless energy) and a few other magitech devices. They're called arcanotechnology these days. Arcanotechnology (aka technosorcery) tends to be more popular than 途egular (途itual) sorcery. There痴 just something about the fabric of reality being manipulated by an unthinking machine instead of a human mind that makes people more comfortable. Cybermancy (sorcery through software and apps) is harder but doable. Magic is heavily regulated by the government. They require arcanotechs and sorcerers to be licensed and get periodic psychiatric assessments, control information about beings like Cthulhu, provide information so the public can feel comfortable withhow magic works, and appropriately punish those who misuse magic. Other Technology Everyone has cheap, fast wireless internet now, and with micro-chips embedded in everything the Net is everywhere. Everyone has their own personal data pad, a way to perceive augmented reality and basic computer knowledge. Medical science is doing great. Health care is free, more illnesses are cured, and the human lifespan has had a few decades tacked on. Human augmentation has advanced a lot if you池e rich you could basically become a brain in a robot if you wanted. Magic can do a lot of what science can稚, but it痴 more heavily regulated, expensive and riskier. A lot of the latest research has been into nano-medicine and how it could replace arcanotherapy. Nanotechnology is starting to change things, but the NEG regulates that too. Most people can print basic food and clothing for free, but need to shop for the rest. The government and major corporations use it for large-scale manufacturing. Mars is colonised (with several more worlds in progress), and people rely on sublight ships to get around. There are arcanotech interplanetary communications nodes, but that痴 still in the early stages of development. Politics Most of the world is part of the New Earth Government. The NEG formed in the early 2070s as a union of economic blocs that had coalesced over the previous decades: APTO (Atlantic-Pacific Treaty Organisation): the US, UK, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Others. NERU (new European-Russian Union): The EU + Russia (except the UK, who wanted stronger ties with America) SEAA (South East Asian Alliance): China + ASEAN AEF (Arab-Eurasian Federation): Arab League + some Western/Central Asian nations RSA (Republuc of South America): Central/South American nations SAL (South African League): Eastern and Southern African nations The New Earth Government came together as a reaction to the Cult Wars, the discovery of the Mi-Go, and a lingering feeling that Earth was alone in a hostile universe. It痴 a shaky alliance sometimes someone threatens to leave every decade or so, and nations are still more likely to cooperate in their old blocs than as a united Earth but so far, it痴 holding. quote:Mostly because everyone like痴 having a higher up they can blame things on. Right, Tak? Toku Heavy Industries This is us, of course! THI is the world痴 largest corporation, and the leader in industrial arcanotech. We致e pioneered dozens of fields, from arcano-mediated fusion to affordable space travel! You致e heard a lot about THI already during the general onboarding, so we値l skip ahead to talking about a few specific areas that impact your jobs. quote:One thing I値l note is that while most of our products are either large scale projects or mass production, as part of Tiger Team Gamma you have special access to requisition customized equipment. MAHO MAHO is tasked with locating occult relics and sites, in order to provide R&D with more information about traditional or ancient occult practices. Even today this information can lead to major breakthroughs in arcanotechnology. MAHO works closely with the Ashton Foundation and major universities to make sure the academic knowledge they uncover is shared. quote:MAHO is kind of a weird one for us. On the one hand, they池e in a very high-risk area. On the other, they really know what they池e doing. The upshot is that, they don稚 call us in often, but when they do, it痴 always very bad. RESCUE Project Our very own magical girls! Unlike with many corporations, RESCUE Project痴 members focus on emergency rescue, relief work, and rebuilding efforts. They were very active in Tokyo after the Gate Incident in 2047. RESCUE Project is one of the oldest groups, so there are a lot of alumni. Currently we have six active members. All of their work is done as charity donations, though I have to admit the PR boost they give THI is well worth the cost. We rarely work with RESCUE Project directly, but we share the same company campus so you may see them around. quote:I used to be one of RESCUE Project痴 managers, so if you have any questions about them, just ask! Special Research Division Special Research handles our most speculative arcanotechnology experimentation. A lot of what they do never has a direct economic application, but that痴 the price of staying on the bleeding edge. quote:These idiots get into trouble all the time. You値l get to know them real well. Toku Interplanetary Toku Interplanetary mostly serves as a doing-business-as brand in the colonies and stations. Their staff coordinates the offworld activities of other divisions, and provides expertise for conditions in space or on other planets. They were known as Toku Orbital until pretty recently, so you may hear that name still being used in some places. quote:Interplanetary is almost never a direct customer of ours, but if there is a problem offworld we get called in on, they値l be involved to provide support. They池e pretty helpful, but they tend to be a bit risk averse. Competitors and Customers Let痴 cover a handful of the other major corporations THI competes or collaborates with regularly. Uller Corporation Aspects: Profit Motive; Occult Corner Cutting; Too Big to Fail Our number one competitor. Uller is in exactly the same business as us, so we池e constantly going toe-to-toe with them on contracts or in sales. Uller originated as a spin-off of the Ashton Foundation, of all things. Initially, the Foundation was directly involved in developing and producing arcanotechnology. It wasn't long before this threatened to subsume the Foundation's intended role, so the production areas were spun off into a new corporation. The Uller Corporation licensed Ashton's patents at very favorable rates and handled all the corporate and industrial aspects for bringing them to market. Over time, though, Uller became very profit motivated, and its government connections shielded it from playing by the rules. Eventually there was a messy divorce. Uller is now a very large and wealthy company, but with a reputation for ruthlessness, corner cutting, waste dumping, profit seeking, and generally being a bad actor in the industry. Worse, because of their attitude Uller is prone to being infiltrated by cults or having divisions go rogue. Reorganizations and firings after these incidents never seem to really solve the institutional problem. quote:Low down, dirty, corner cutting, idiotic... Aguila Digital Aspects: Entertainment, Everywhere; One Node at A Time; Information High The first megacorp that emerged from the Philippines after arcanotechnology revived the nation's economy. Aguila started as a electronics and software company known for unexpectedly popular MMOs, then expanded to the fields of telecommunications and live entertainment. quote:Someone we致e been keeping an eye on - they池e starting to compete with us for telecom infrastructure projects, and they池e good at it. Algol Extraterran Interests Aspects: Fun Guys Really; SPAAACE! Algol is a big customer, major supplier, and powerful competitor. Their asteroid mining interests buy a lot of equipment from us, and in turn we get big shipments of raw materials. At the same time, we池e often at odds for contracts to build stations, ships, and colonies. Their monopoly on trade with the Mi-Go sometimes lets them undercut our products with cheap extraterrestial imports. quote:They致e also got access to some Mi-Go weaponry, which is scary stuff. They致e even got some Mi-Go employees now, apparently. Algol tends to get involved whenever the Mi-Go are, even if it isn稚 actually part of one of their projects, so we sometimes have run ins. Duvalle Laboratories Aspects: Not Run By Snake People, Honest!; R&D For Hire An arcanotech firm based out of the Chicago-Milwaukee Metroplex, their modus operandi is to develop and patent advanced products, then cut a deal with a larger company to actually produce them. It let痴 them stay small and nimble while turning big profits. Would be more annoying if they didn稚 focus on esoteric fields most other companies aren稚 looking at, so they don稚 often pre-empt others. Haven稚 been doing well lately. quote:They used to be run by literal snake people. Not a euphemism. Not a joke. ExoCute Aspects: The Animest Firearms; How Do We Arm the Other 11?; ISO 18000 Compliant The number one supplier of fashion forward armaments. Actually the third biggest arms company around, and growing. They池e starting to compete with us on some military contracts, but we aren稚 a weapons company so it痴 mostly ancillary projects. We致e actually worked with them on a few contracts as well. ExoCute has the most effective bureaumantic mages around, so don稚 sign anything. quote:They池e not just show pieces, ExoCute痴 guns are some of the best around. They致e also got a nasty little Executive Actions group - that is, spec-ops strike team - and their field reps are almost all mages. Be very careful about getting into fights with them. Greifherz GmbH (Griffinheart Arms) Aspects: Lots of Alarming Germans; Things That Go Fast and Explode; Precision Greifherz痴 main business puts them in competition with ExoCute more than it does with us, but they also produce more heavy military equipment, which is a market we池e active in. They used to work with Uller but that relationship fell apart in rather spectacular fashion. They tend towards purely technological solutions. Their magic isn稚 bad, just not cutting edge. quote:Spectacular might be an understatement. There痴 been persistent rumors of paramilitary actions on both sides. Not surprising, really - Greifherz is almost a stereotype in their love of precision, and if there痴 anything Uller isn稚, it痴 precise. Hakurei Industries Aspects: Magical Bullet Spam; Traditional Aesthetic Bit of a run of security companies here, but Hakurei is a bit of a special case. They focus on defensive and security systems rather than offensive weaponry, and do a lot of large scale installations. As a result, we contract with Hakurei on a regular basis. In fact, we buy from them occasionally. quote:Hakurei makes good equipment, but it has a depressing tendency to get turned against us during operations. They also employ a lot of magical girls, and the kinds of problems we deal with attract magical girls like moths to flame. They致e also got this Shinto aesthetic thing going that is just too much. Japan Self Defense Force Aspects: Mahou Shoujo; Demon Cannon Girls; More a Brand Name Than a Military Unit. Originally the Japanese military, the JSDF's conventional forces were absorbed directly into the APTO unified command a long time ago. Its continued existence as a separate, though much reduced, agency depends on two unique unconventional force the Japanese pioneered - mahou shoujo and mecha. The magical girls are both one-woman air wings and idols who provide a terrific PR boost. The mecha squads are just as popular, especially since the JSDF makes sure to select talented artists or actors for the roles. We provide a lot of equipment for the JSDF, including all of their mecha, and contract them for special security requirements on a routine basis. quote:(。◕‿‿◕。) Wukong Corporation Aspects: They Who Fight Monsters; Rage Against the Machine; Kings of Metal A corporation founded by rich, angry businessmen who suffered greatly when the Xanthic Storm swept over China. Wukong takes its namesake from the legendary Sun Wukong, and dedicates itself to fighting the armies of heaven as he did, no matter the cost. It specializes in countering and neutralizing magic in all forms, protecting homes and equipment from occult, and destroying the strange. quote:Uller may be our biggest competitor, and Algol may be our most effective, but Wukong is the fiercist. They deal in a lot of the same markets we do, but their anti-occult stance really puts into antagonistic positions. Plus, they sell a lot of equipment that directly impacts the performance of ours. Government Agencies and NGOs The NEG is one of our biggest customers, and is much too large to cover every department in any kind of detail. However, the Tiger Teams meet up with two specific agencies on a regular basis. We also do business with numerous NGOs, but the most important by far is the Ashton Foundation. Office Of Occult Intelligence (OOI) Aspects: Semper Occultus; For Our Eyes Only; Protect At Any Cost The magic police of the NEG. They deal with occult crimes, police the occult black market where possible, and try to protect the NEG from monsters and the cults that summon them. The OOI do good work, but that sometimes requires disappearing people to detention facilities, shutting down arcanotech projects, and hoarding artifacts. Be careful when messing with them. quote:They don稚 have as much firepower as you might expect, but you really don稚 want to screw with them. Arcanotechnology Regulatory Comission (ARC) Aspects: Health & Safety; Drowning in Red Tape; Better Now Than After It Explodes The ARC is the civilian regulatory agency that oversees use of arcanotechnology throughout the NEG, especially in industrial and medical applications. Their job is to avoid major occult incidents by establishing rules and standards everyone has to follow. ARC has a big job, and generates a lot of bureaucratic red tape, but anyone sensible who's dealt with the occult understands why they exist. quote:The true enemy at last! Ashton Foundation Aspects: Expanding the Frontiers of Arcanotechnology; Action Occultists; Muvian Experts The occult pioneers. Their early work is based on the 2020s work of Miskatonic student Annabelle Ashton, who dug up forgotten tomes from the university's restricted section while researching an odd WikiLeaks release about a 1920s expedition to a plateau near Tibet. After she went mad, Miskatonic痴 board of trustees gathered funding from APTO grants and private investors to form the Foundation that bears her name. Today's Ashton has four missions: researching the occult sciences, advising the NEG in occult matters, promoting awareness of the occult, and searching for occult relics around the world. quote:The Foundation and THI management have a solid working relationship. We池e one of their major donors, in fact. We call them in to provide background and expert advice on tricky occult problems. You might run into them in the field occasionally. Cults Cults are like weeds, they pop up everywhere. Here are some of the most common, and most troublesome. Children of Chaos Aspects: Cult Of The Crawling Chaos; Nothing Personal, It's Just Business; More Money, More Problems The Children of Chaos are a cult of Nyarlathotep. Their home is the corporate world they infiltrate companies to steal their secrets and run a cloud of seemingly unconnected IP management companies, non-profit associations, private education, R&D and media companies to collect money for secret cult projects. As the cult is decentralised, the NEG is largely unaware of their existence. The kind of rumors that float in the internet say that they know a ritual that turn them into ravenous monsters. But that's silly, who would willingly do that? quote:Keeping these jerks out of our hair is a major past time of Corporate Security. Fortunately, they tend to prefer business practices not in keeping with the Toku Way, so they rarely get much power in THI. Disciples of the Cold Ones Aspects: Sciencultists; They Called Me Mad!; Agents In Every Institution A group of scientists, scholars and libertarians who worship a group of beings they believe exist beyond the edge of the universe. Their goal is to infiltrate as many academic institutions as possible to steal research and 登pen everyone痴 minds to the truths of the universe. They池e also good at manipulating smaller cults. quote:The Disciples are the cult that most often comes up with internal problems. Unlike most cults, they know how to keep their drat mouths shut, and the difference between a Disciple and a slightly off research scientist is a fine one. Empty Skies Aspects: Humanity Should Stay On Earth; Don稚 Trust Arcanotechnology; Remember When We Wrecked Tokyo A group that believes humanity is not supposed to be out among the stars. They focus on attacks on space colonies and spaceports, but don't like arcanotech in general. Though some members worship Shub-Niggurath, the majority are politically and ideologically motivated. It's a terrorist organization rather than a cult. While they don稚 work with the Green Fury, they do sometimes attack the SEAA痴 space elevator Tenchu. In 2047 they blew up a portal to Mars created by the Japanese corp Toku Heavy Industries, which devastated most of Tokyo. quote:Seriously, gently caress these guys. Green Fury Aspects: "I! Shub-Niggurath!"; Gorilla Warfare; Use Their Science Against Them! An ecoterrorist cult of Shub-Niggurath who aim to reclaim Earth for their mother goddess. They are a major threat in the southern hemisphere, where they have amassed small armies of hijacked mecha and stage guerrilla attacks on industrial centers. quote:As a professional security analyst, I have to acknowledge that the Fury are a much bigger and more common problem for THI than Empty Skies. There are more of them, and their targets are easier to get to. They are the most common cult we run up against. That being said, gently caress Empty Skies with a rusty poker. Xanthic Storm A mid-21st century cult. Launched an world domination attempt that failed through a combination of bad timing, infighting, and plain old incompetence. Held out in mountain ranges for years, especially the Andes and Rockies, but was most successful in Asia. They took over a big chunk of the Himalayan Plateau and hold onto it for five years, and even managed an offensive that forced Shanghai and Chongqing to evacuate before a lack of air support and a surprise alien bombardment ended them in 2065. Offshoots of the cult still exist. Xanthic splinter groups have terrible PR, even for cults, and spend as much time fighting each other over orthodoxy and politics as anything else. They usually end up as cannon fodder or shock-troops for more competent cults. quote:Oh yeah, these morons are still around. They池e barely cannon fodder at this point. If you run into them, someone else is pulling the strings. Other Groups Diogenes Club Aspects: Better Living Through Omniscience; Manners Must Adorn Knowledge; Collections and Connections The Diogenes Club is a gentleperson's club for learned men scholars, sages, wizards, scientists, professors, Miskatonic alumni, anyone with an interest in learning and a love of silence. That is all they are. In no way have they ever been a brain-trust for the British government. They most certainly do not dabble in dark magic, communication with extradimensional beings, or robbing tombs. And definitely not after those activities became both highly regulated and politically incorrect. Para-Psychics Most PPs have one kind of power telekinesis, telepathy, cryokinesis, dream projection, retrocognition, etc. PPs have to get registered with the government, and are required to wear a badge if their powers are dangerous or invasive. There痴 a slightly higher rate of para-psychics born on Mars for some reason. quote:THI痴 diversity policies cover para-psychics. If you are the subject of, or witness any, harassment over para-psychic abilities, let us know. We take it very seriously. Akathar The Akathar were created by the Yith and buried in the Great Sandy Desert a millenia or twenty ago, as backup bodies in case of emergency. Decades ago some Yith escaping an unknown catastrophe activated them and decided to ask the NEG for somewhere to hang out in exchange for some tech. Akathar have a natural talent for magic, and many of them work in the arcanotech field, and for THI. The akathar most people know are their mostly-human children. Being raised in human communities with no culture beyond mysterious grandparents who never leave their homes unless they have high-level behind-the-scenes government jobs is unusual, but they manage. quote:That痴 me! Mi-Go The Mi-Go first introduced themselves to the public in 2065 by lasering the Storm痴 command to stop them summoning an Ancient One. It was this event that convinced the world that banding together under the NEG might be a good idea. They are mysterious and alien. The NEG made the Charon Treaty with them (an agreement to stay out of each other痴 business), but nobody trusts them and there痴 usually some saber-rattling every few years or so. This is one of those years. quote:The Mi-Go痴 motives are really difficult to parse at the best of times, but they definitely have an interest in big arcanotech projects. In other words, an interest in us. Soul Network Aspects: Secret Web of Secret Societies; Facing the Monsters at Our Door; Cancelling the Apocalypse Recent information from the OOI suggests that Arcane Underground groups have banded together to form some kind of syndicate. This might represent a major challenge in the future if occult-empowered criminals manage to organize in a significant way. quote:And even that痴 out of date, honestly. Ponponkonā 4 Once, there was a mid-level Shinigami named Ponponkonā who got caught up in some bad business and captured by a bunch of assholes. Said assholes proceeded to experiment on her and do some very weird things. Like take her DNA, and make a bunch of clones. The first few clones were straight- no changes. Even her memories were kept. Eventually, though, one escaped and caused some chaos for her wicked captors, so they decided that the 4-series clones would be... different. Only the abilities of the mind were important, reasoned the scientists. So why not just grow a head, slap it on a cyborg frame, and boom, completely controllable. If they get uppity, override the body, no muss, no fuss. A net reduction in production time as well as a great savings in blood. Of course, the day Ponponkonā 4 was supposed to go active something went wrong in the system, and the body failsafe overrides didn't work (almost certainly someone got fired over that one.) Ponponkonā 4 promptly fled, with only a confused series of incomplete memories and a huge, huge headache to her name. She fled halfway across the world, becoming an urban legend of sorts in much of Asia, before her cyborg body started to break down. Luckily, Toku found her before anyone more malicious. She was easy to keep occupied while waiting for her body back until she learned about the inevitable destruction from the flying polyps. The resignation of the Yith incensed Vivian and she would get into a heated debate over the inevitability of death with any schmuck without the sense to keep sliding along. She theorized that since she did not perceive later events she would not instinctively follow what was laid out. The Yith were not about to let her throw out one of their bodies away against the polyps testing a crackpot theory. However the theory was novel enough they were going to have one of their researchers look into it, so they told her to shut her up. Vivian only realized later that the Yith using her body was said researcher and exhaustively studied the subject to rest any future debates. Surrounded by such a strained concept of the passage of time Vivian only realized she was with the Yith for over a decade after the exchange was over. Suddenly Vivian was living on her own with a packed study, a job she didn't know how to do, and no education. She fell into unscrupulous lines of work almost immediately. Her experiences had made Vivian uniquely qualified for high risk work. The Yith spending so much time in her body left an imprint on her. An insatiable curiosity causes Vivian to react with excited curiosity when most others would be terrified. The occult knowledge learned was retained through vague instinct allow for speedy if imprecise invocations. And her time with the Yith encouraged an impatience and desire for action. Despite this holding any sort of work for a while has been challenging for her. She is still readjusting to human faction expressions, her smile coming off as any flavor of creepy at any time. She'll cheerfully remark how eating is so much easier now that her mouth is so close to her eyes again. Blurt out explanations of unpleasant things and then not understand what she just said. And that's before even considering the fact that no one wants to be caught with the sorceress who can't remember getting registered. How the coworkers handle her is their problem. It more than makes up for having someone with such a nose for occult trouble and an eagerness to seek it out. Living occult libraries such as herself are often in such decrepit bodies as to be useless in the field. Following the suggestion of just reapplying the character to the different game. Tried to tweak the character description to better fit the new game. Let me know if something doesn't fit or if I messed up on character creation. I never made stunts before. Okay, let's get this work in progress started! Thomas Atkin Tienni / Then and now "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. T-54s rolling in victory down the streets of Budapest. I've watched helicopters take off overloaded with desperate people, with even more desperate people crowding below begging for one more space. But all those moments are gone now. Lost to history. Ashes to ashes. And I don't know what to do. What should I lay down my life for now?" Once upon a time, prayers to war gods centered on supporting personal skill and courage. Oh god of war, grant me swift feet, sharp eyes, sure hands, strong arms, that sort of thing. As war became more and more about army corps, industrialization, and eventually nationalism, that changed. First the prayer became "let me do my regimental colors proud," then "don't let me embarrass myself in front of my mates," then "I just want my friends and me to survive this!" Eventually they became cries of "I'm a dead man walking, just don't let me die alone and in vain." And their prayers were answered in the form of "people" like Thomas. Thomas has fought in battles and uprisings in every time and place, from the Somme, to Ethiopia, to Poland, to Hungary, to Xanthic threatened China. Invariably on the losing side. But he did his duty with all the fear and hesitation of a wind-up doll, because for 150 years that's what he basically was. A little doll designed by an unknown intelligence to give comfort to people with certain death ahead. A very well designed, very skilled, very human-faking wind-up doll, to be sure, but a doll unfazed by bombs and guns nonetheless. When Warsaw fell, he kept fighting until he was blown to bits by a bomber. Then he woke up on Finland just in time for the Winter War. When he got shot by the Soviets, they took his body and he found himself fighting in Brest-Litovsk during Barbarossa. And so on. And so on...all the way to China, where he shared an isolated bunker with a scared but resolved Chinese conscript with Xanthic creatures scratching away just outside. And then the Mi-Go blasted away at the Xanthic Storm. And Thomas found himself swept up in attacks that were actually working. And when China declared victory over the Xanthic Storm, he felt his eyes open. And for the first time in 150 years, he was scared. For someone who'd spent several lives hitching himself to lost causes...what happens after he wins? At first he started just helping with the reconstruction. A hundred villages shelled off the map and the ground so blasted that bulldozers and cranes couldn't get through. A lot of manual labor, decades worth. But it felt good to put it back together. And it gave him time to think about all the fallen flags he'd rallied behind. Then he chanced to meet that same scared Chinese conscript from a long long time ago, now a grandfather, and he noticed that he hadn't aged a day from that fateful battle or shown any fatigue whatsoever. Some old anti-wizard paranoia flared up (entirely understandable given the Xanthic mess, he was of the same mind not so long ago!), there was a bit of a screaming mess...when it was over he took the first junk he could find to Japan, and from there to Neo-Tokyo. Thankfully, he was able to get a job with THI Human Resources as an interpreter/translator without having to answer too many questions about how someone his apparent age picked up that many half-dead languages and obscure dialects. His luck didn't hold out during the annual physical checkup, and he had to awkwardly explain to the doctor that, yes, he was, in fact, old enough to be her great grandfather. Some filtering up the corporate ladder later, and he reported to the Tiger side of the company with the new job title of Historical Linguistic Security Officer Semi-Expendable. It made no sense in any language he knows, but the job does let him use his old skill set to the fullest. He'll just have to hope that he can use the skills he's picked up over 200 years plus that DON'T involve killing people...at least not exclusively.... She sighs. 鼎ontinue, please. After you were born. SOMEWHERE BACK IN THE JUNGLES OF SOUTH AMERICA A brave little ape grows up, alone in a cruel world! Well, not alone, strictly speaking. There were the cultists, but they hardly helped to socialize a growing gorilla. They were obsessed with ruling the world and stranger maths. He was fine with the latter, in fact he excelled at it, however he was never one for conquest. He was an artist at heart! A lover, not a fighter! Still, they tried to teach him their evil ways傭ut they could not corrupt his noble heart! Not even the Man in Yellow who oversaw his education. When Goro refused to play along, the Man in Yellow would walk up, wearing his ridiculous hat, and it would be time for punishment. Maybe he wouldn稚 get food today. Or he would have to wear the Collar. Once, he had to watch while a man was beaten for bringing him a book. To this day, Goro does not like anything yellow. Eventually, the Green Fury felt that Goro would be better educated in the field. They attached him to a unit and sent them into the jungle. They were right, to an extent. Goro was, and is, a very compassionate soul. He cared deeply for his unit, misguided as they were. He didn稚 want anything bad to happen to them, so he helped as best he could to keep them safe with his sharp mind and senses. But eventually, they had to face with a mission that wasn稚 simple property destruction, something that Goro couldn稚 stomach. They were going to burn a village. This was not just any village, for at night he had begun to slip away from his unit and investigate his surroundings and found the village. There, he found the people to be welcoming, despite his appearance. He would draw for them, and they would smile and sometimes give him snacks he had never had before. They were good people. He knew that the Man in Yellow must have found out about his visits, that that was why they were going to attack. That he was punishing Goro again. He tried to speak with his comrades, but they could not be reasoned with. Friends they were, but the cause was first in their hearts above all else. That left Goro with one, sad choice left to him. He returned to that village and set to work in the middens, gathering junk. He would protect them. When the soldiers came, the villagers cried out, running into their homes. Goro stood to meet them, holding a washing machine over his shoulder. They knew what this meant, and so opened fire. But not before Goro turned on the washing machine. It made a terrible noise as it spun up, faster and faster, catching the bullets in a powerful electromagnetic field. The unit, undaunted, drew macahuitls and charged their former comrade, abandoning their guns to the grip of the massive magnet. Goro dropped the machine and pounded his chest, roaring. This managed to make the cultists flinch. They had never seen Goro so angry. It was a bitter fight, but soon it was over. Broken macahuitls lay around Goro and his fallen comrades. The washing machine shuddered its last and let the twisted mass of metal fall to the ground with a thump. He wandered back into the village, bleeding badly. A young girl ran up to him. He had sketched her often, though only when she smiled. Now she was crying. 典here is no need to be upset. He wiped a tear from her face and passed out. BACK IN THE STUDIO 添ou seriously made a personal defense shield out of an old washing machine? 鄭mong other things, yes. 典hen what happened? 的 woke up with a THI researcher standing over me. Oh, looks like I forgot to come up with a good stunt when I rewrote Sonoda for this game. Maj. Mariko Sonoda, JSDF, Ret. Well fine, lemme think for a moment. ...I guess I'm feeling like I've got something to prove? After what happened in Egypt and after I quit the JSDF, for a couple of months I went grocery shopping at five in the morning because I just couldn't deal with people. I got over that, thank God, but I've still done basically nothing but study and post on Something Terrible for the last couple of years. It's starting to feel like I'm stuck in this huge goony postgraduate rut of essays and textbooks. I kinda want to try diving into a big project and prove to myself I can do it without collapsing into a sobbing mess. And I really wanted the job, too. Turns out there isn't a real market for ex-military magicians. I mean, aside from Uller or Hakurei, and gently caress those guys. I guess I could've gone to Ashton to do some feel-good NGO work or something, but the Toku's offer sounded a bit more interesting. I get to do downright bleeding edge stuff here, it's super exciting. And really, it's not I don't admire all the NGO stuff Ashton's doing, it's just... I want to try doing something big just for myself, for a change. Alaric Burkhart Role: Robotics Engineer Age: 25 Hit: Robots, coffee, old-time rock and roll Miss: Magic, busybodies, thieves Most likely to say: "I think I know what went wrong that time!" Alaric Burkhart was described as a prodigy, a genius in the making, and a brilliant child. At least, his rich parents and rich school teachers described him as such. Nobody knew how or why, but he just was. It was on these glowing references that Wukong Corp hired him and shipped him off to their Mechanical Frames Division, looking to exploit his work for the Extreme Combat Systems project - a way to make the blue-sky concepts of human-like mecha and robotics a reality. It took six months for them to begin to regret the decision. Alaric WAS a genius - he could build anything without breaking a sweat. But all of his designs came with a boatload of... quirks. For instance, he didn't see the issue with a missile system that fired tracking pods containing grape jello (testing of napalm dispersal). Or a cannon that fired classical music - not a sonic weapon, just sheets of classical music (alternative ammunition system - paper cuts hurt!). A riot-suppressing mecha that danced whenever Redbone's Come and Get Your Love was played (an exercise in keeping balance, he claimed). Alaric's head was somewhere else almost all the time. Wukong eventually grew tired of having to accommodate someone who effectively produced nothing useful, and they threatened to fire him unless he could build something useful. They specified a prototype of an "anti-magic bomb" that temporarily nullified non-Euclidian mathematics in an area. Alaric went at it with gusto. It was a great success. Nobody at within a three-mile radius of Wukong R&D could cast a spell for three months. The fallout lasted for weeks, and Alaric was fired faster than a human cannonball. Alaric didn't blame himself for his failure. It was somebody else's fault, after all. Wukong for not being innovative enough. Or maybe the cults for doing... something behind the scenes, he's sure. Or it's the magic users, for cheating and bypassing all the hard work with their fancy lights and maths. He just wanted to build robots! And a grudge is a powerful thing, especially when in a mind of a genius with nothing else to occupy it. He began to hate... well, hate is a strong word. Dislike, perhaps. It certainly wasn't hate that made him return to his workplace in the dead of night and steal the one thing he'd made that could have made Wukong billions. Not at all. A few months in hiding later, Alaric remerged, applying for a position of THI with a demonstration of a personal D Drive 10% more efficient than current models. Unfortunately, he couldn't shake off his reputation, but his skills were too great to ignore. THI decided that having a mind like that on their Tiger teams would be a great asset - and after all, if he didn't do well there, there were always the secret dimensional gate projects... quote:Alaric Burkhart The Deleter fucked around with this message at 15:05 on Feb 11, 2015 |

I am mad scientist. It's so cool. Son of a bitch. Dr. Albert North, PhD Concept Aspect: Mad Arcanoscientist With The Elder God Hand "Alright, experiment log, October 6, 2120. I am Dr. Albert North, and this is my assistant, Anna Kadath." "Hi there!" "And this....is the R'yleh Drive. As you can see, it looks like a simple wrist device, but if I've configured it right, once activated, it shall tap into the same forces used in Ashton's Dimensional Engine and bestow the wearer with eldritch abilities from another world! Now, I shall put the device onto my own wrist and...." *Beep beep beep* "R'yleh Drive, activate!" *Fhwoom! Crackle, crackle CRACK!* "Oh God, my arm!" "Oh no! Dr. North, what's going on?! Should we abort the experiment?!" "No, Anna, this is perfect, just perfect! I just need to take control, and.....Nnnngaah!" "What....what is that?" "It's progress, that's what!" Dr. Albert North is by all accounts a genius. Graduating at the top of his class from Miskatonic University, he was sought after by nearly every lab in America. However, he decided to pursue his own studies, where he wouldn't be constrained by such things as "ethics," "the scientific method," and "OSHA standards." Taking on an assistant, he started to experiment with dimensional energy and various uses for it. His finest invention was the R'yleh Drive, a device that would be able to utilize dimensional energy for combat purposes. However, on the first test, an unexpected result happened. The Drive, when activated, turned Dr. North's arm into that of an eldritch monster, with inhuman strength. Berry Pop POP IT LIKE A WHEELIE SHOULD I樽 UP ON YOUR MIND FEELING PRETTY GOOD DON探 STOP IT! BITCH YOU IN MY WAY THANK YOU SO MUCH OH WOW OK Yeah, something like that! That's not just a catchy tune though, not after I get a hold of it. It's also a set of core command line instructions that should inhibit external inputs and start flooding it with garbage commands. It's also pretty catchy though, duh. It's all based on a little technique I came up with back when I still worked at whatever little security companies would be interested in some plain ol' security consultant like me. Instead of typing in a bunch of super boring commands, I realized I could mix music around and with some tiny little changes I got beats reading as prompt lookups which fed commands to the core input. It's a little more complex than that, but the important thing is that I could hack a computer just by blaring a speaker at it. Then I played around with some tech with a little help from some of my friends working in robotics, and I got myself a neural transmitter that let me think changes into music to remix it on the fly and use it to send commands however I wanted. It's also a pretty great set of 'phones! Docs said pulsing music straight through my brain like that was liable to make me start hallucinating, but that's totally a load of nonsense, yeah? Totally not hallucinating. Of course, people just thought I was some crazy weirdo shooting pop straight into my brain, but they started singing a different tune after some two-bit hacker in a van decided to call the company I was working at and negotiate a ransom on some documents he stole. I got a hold of the phone, shot some tweaked jams through it, and voila! The idiot had a nice little locked up room with a dance party set up by yours truly, with everything from his phone to the van itself rendered inoperable and flooding him with some pretty hype pop blaring out every speaker and my little animated business card flashing on every screen. After that hit the news, I had a whole desk fulla offers from about every big name company wanting a little bit of my magic. Had to just pick one, though, so I picked my favorite. Those cuties over at Exocute wanted my tech to make some kinda scrambler gun. Basically, it'd shoot out something mega basic that should work against most bots and junk like that to send them on the fritz and lock 'em up. And, by request, it'd do so with some ridiculous sounding J-Pop. It's quick and bouncy enough to fit a ton of garbage commands into, and Exocute loved the design, so I guess I can excuse their terrible taste in music! They paid me for the rights to it, and I started working for their security to make sure all their secret docs and that kinda junk were locked up tight. Seemed like a pretty great deal at first, but I'm not joking around when I say I'm seriously a pro at this stuff, and Exocute isn't exactly the biggest target around anyways. Only took about a year before I realized I'd jacked so many scouting botnets and locked things down so tight that nobody could figure out my encryption (buncha uncultured nerds who don't know anything about music, clearly), and that I wasn't actually doing anything except sitting around and stonewalling Exocute's tech side just by existing. I even ran a little test and brought down security for a whole week while monitoring it to make sure nothing actually got through, and... Not a single attempt was made. In fact, any attempts on stealing tech from us were all physical. Nobody could get at the design docs, so everyone who still cared tried to get their hands on the actual prototypes and stuff, all well out of my department. Things were super boring, and just because I could have coasted on that doesn't mean I wanted to. Luckily, when word happened to get out that Berry was falling asleep at her desk, along comes an offer from some jerk betting I couldn't do the same with the biggest corp around. Which, I mean, probably true. Manually monitoring that much junk would be a pretty hot way to make myself crazy for real. But a challenge seems way better than snoozing around all day, so I quit out with the Exocuties, stripped my security system out since they couldn't even figure out how to start dealing with it by themselves, and signed up with Toku. Worst case, it's super duper boring over there too and I can just ditch them in a year with enough to retire for life, but I bet they've got a thing or two to keep me busy, yeah? They better! Yumi Kawaguchi The word betrayal implies a feeling of discarded loyalty. It requires for the active party to believe that their act was anything less that worthy. Yumi Kawaguchi did not betray Hakurei Industries. She escaped a prison that had held her for most of her life. She did not betray her father. The man had long ago stopped thinking of her as his child, so she merely returned the favor. Most would expect the daughter of one of Hakurei's lead scientists to follow in his steps. They would imagine a woman who had her whole career laid out. What they wouldn't picture is a girl raised as for the sole purpose of providing testing data. A girl who by her 18th birthday was proficient in a plethora of firearms and combat techniques. A girl who by all rights was more machine than human. In the days, hours of experiments and training for the scientists. In the nights, espionage for the suits. Every moment of her existence was watched, measured, and recorded. Freedom from that purgatory seemed nothing more than a fantasy. Her chance at escape ended up being pure blind luck rather than some well thought out plan. A prototype skinsuit, designed to aid the user avoid all manner of detection. Some proper forethought might have easily prevented the situation from turning out the way it did, but before the day was done, Yumi had vanished and every attempt to track her met failure. How THI managed to find her afterwards was a mystery, but their offer wasn't a surprise. While Hakurei was one of the few corps that she'd never been allowed to learn about, she still had knowledge of enough inner workings to give THI the upper hand in future deals. In exchange for that information, they offered a job, a new home, and the chance to put her skills to good use for once. Lt. Catherine Nishikiori ESD Outgoing Call-2121.01.04-08:38:49:2300 posted:*click* A decorated veteran of the APTO 22nd Mobile Unit, Catherine Nishikiori is one of the most level-headed pilots on THI's payroll. Distressingly level-headed, given the enormous quantity of eldritch energies she's been exposed to while working with experimental arcanotech. The vast majority of people exposed to these energies end up as tentacled cultists or unfortunate casualties of the OOI. Catherine is, if anything, a stronger woman for the experience. Day and night she strides through the testing facilities like she owns the place, poring over her own test regimens and excoriating any poor soul who forgot their mandatory precautions. With good reason: she's saved more hapless researchers than THI would ever like to admit. As her grandma always said, "argue with fools, and you will become foolish. Kill the fools, and you will become cruel. Rescue the fools, and you will be wise and wealthy for the rest of your days." Of course her grandmother was a poorly-paid civil servant and spent most of the last 20 years raising her grandchild. But Catherine looks to no one else for advice. Key to her performance is the peculiar mastery she has over arcane mechanics. Dubbed the "Marie Curie of Arcane UI", her theories on Man-Magic-Machine interactions have found their way into an incredible number of THI products over the years. Her confidence in this knowledge borders on arrogance, though she'll never admit to the side-effects she's accumulated to gather it. R&D has extensively documented the phenomena that stalk her: living colors with impossible wavelengths, rooms deformed into strange angles, sounds like barking slowed down ten thousand times. They've grown so disturbing lately that the Neo-Tokyo branch laboratory demanded her relocation to the Tiger Teams. Catherine suspects that the labs are pulling a fast one on her; still, it's a chance to see the world and prove her ideas on a global stage. Research Division would regret their decision soon enough. So. Let's talk about the incident the other day. Sure! According to this report, you defeated a monster... that took out half a security squad. I want you to explain exactly what happened. Oh, that! I hit it with a flower pot. A flower pot? Yeah, I just... hid behind a door, and whammo! You know they always break in cartoons and stuff, but it actually took three whacks before it broke. Do you understand that you eliminated a B-Class extradimensional threat... with a flower pot? Well, it had a skull, didn't it? I figured physics would do the rest. I don't know why you think this is so complicated. Yes, well, we're looking at your history, there was an incident with a certain portal... Oh, that, yeah, I went into that portal. ... to the Lost City of Carcosa. Is that where I was? Huh. Is that in Mexico? No. It's on another plane. Well. I mean. That thing sucked up my phone. I mean, it's a collector's item. They only made 2000 of them! I couldn't just lose it. It cost like ・50,000, that's nearly a month's rent. Do you realize exactly how dangerous that was? Ha ha ha, well, if you say so! I thought it looked a little strange. But I still have my phone. See? You understand the kind of actions you've been taking are a violation of company policy? We don't... really have established correctional actions yet for somebody who routinely endangers themselves, but bear in mind we can't be held liable. Well, it's a dangerous world, I mean, look at what happened to Tokyo. Any of us could die at any time, you know? I try not to worry about it, though. ... So, uh, is that all? There's also the incident where you... as I understand it... got a Children of Chaos infiltrator to blurt out their mission over lunch. The time you erased a blood sigil when cleaning a window and ended a curse on the office. And... what- what book is that there? I found it in the mail room the other day, but it wasn't addressed to anyone, so I just- sorry, I should have taken it right away to missing items, I know, but I wanted to finish it first, it's called the ''Book of Eibon'', it's about a wizard and his adventures- What? I- let me see- this is- this needs to go straight to- I'm sorry, but we need to hang on to this. What? I wanted to find out how it ends... well, I guess it's my punishment. I'll have to see if there's a copy on Amazon. There isn't. Look. What I'm getting around to is that, somehow, you seem to have a gift for dealing with unusual situations. And... well. We're looking to hire you on and end your internship after a long review of these sorts of incidents. Really? Oh my- thank you. Thank you! Well, calm down, there's going to be a lot to get used to. For one, we'd be moving you out of MAHO- Aw, I'm going to miss their coffee machine. Arcanobrewery! Well, you would be actually paid. We'd be moving you to one of our Tiger Teams. It'd be hard work, but you'll have full benefits. Full... benefits? And you'd actually be rewarded for the risks you seem to gravitate towards. Ha ha ha, if you say so, when do I start? He'd have to go about becoming a real life action movie hero. Fast foward. Life in the APTO Corps wasn't what he thought it'd be. He got caught in an explosion once and it hurt. None of his time spent behind the wheel was exciting or a chase. The hotties seemed mostly uninterested. His uniform was dorky. All in all, a miserable failure. His dream was in danger of dying on him...until a fateful short tour in Japan. What should've been a simple cult breaking alongside the JSDF became way more when they failed to stop them in time and a lumbering eldritch monster was summoned. The next hour and a half was a blur for Dennis, but somehow, it had all been caught on tape. The dogfighting in the stolen jet. The incredible gunfight across the ziplines. Walking away cool while holding one of the minor nieces of the royal family as the hidden temple exploded behind him. It didn't matter that most of the actual incident was covered up; the video went viral. Then came the tour in Australia. The chase against the Dark Young. The makeshift flamethrower. Freezing the cult leader with his own ice-ray then telling him chill out. And so on, and so forth. APTO wasn't sure what to do with him. Sure, this could potentially be great PR...except it seemed to keep happening. Where Dennis went, so did eldritch shenanigans. Eventually, there was an "agreement" made with THI. Slightly reworked Vladislava Sveshnikov, THI Sales Concept: Wolf In Corporate Approved Dress Code To Whom It May Concern, Toku Heavy Industries is a company that employees a workforce of millions, people are going to be overlooked and things will slip under the radar during the hiring process, it's an unfortunate fact. Having an employee willingly exploit that fact is another matter. Vladislava Sveshnikov is one such individual. It took awhile for HR to investigate the discrepancies on her file, but I got her. She can say goodbye to her days of half assing her duties in sales. I want her self-serving attitude out of my department, and on to a Tiger Team where she belongs. Your thinking "A Tiger Team is no place for someone who works in sales, A tiger teams job is full of danger not procurement orders, account billing and inventory checks". If you can manage to navigate the maze of bureaucratic red-tape, OPSEC bullshit, sideways promotions and whatever else she managed to get on her file, You'll quickly understand she has no business in sales. At a glance it looks like she only has a variety of business orientated degrees from Saint Petersburg State University, However hidden away is her involvement with Russian Airborne Forces , Russian Federal State Security, Various mercenary groups, Exocute, Wukong Corporation, even Uller before winding up working with THI. That's quite the list of former employers/associations to have concealed and she always comes out worse off than when she started in terms of her standing within the company. Worth noting that her financial situation never suffers in spite of her constant dismissals and decreasing annual salary. I suspect much of Vladislava's past employment history is a series of carefully calculated failures, accomplishments and favors in order to discredit or hide her true abilities, bettering her chances of securing job placement behind a desk. Until recently I lacked the slightest idea what she was up to but a quick look at her past record tells you she does not stay employed for a long period of time before she moves on. Now I've never caught her doing anything against company policy or illegal but I don't trust her. She got this look in her eyes when I sent her off on a business meeting. I've seen that look before, it's what yakuza's representative mah-jong players get when they systematically part a man from his money. I made a call on gut feeling and kept her behind a desk since. My gut call paid off, Vladislava has a reputation of selling anything to anyone who can cough up the money. The reason she's never been an issue for the proper authorities? Her stock and trade is largely counterfeits or bootlegs of varying quality depending on who you ask. However she will perform targeted killings and demolitions work if asked. I'm afraid if's only a matter of time before her stock includes both legitimate and fake THI weaponry or worse. It goes without question that she must have contacts in high and low places and the abilities to deal with them if things go wrong in order to facilitate her gun-running and other unsavory activities. Such skills would be better suited on a Tiger Team not lounging around my department scalping fake designer goods. If anything it will make it easier to keep tabs on her and if we're lucky she'll catch a bullet and no longer be a complication. A natural-born fighter, the videos of her facing off against the gang went viral. Aguila Digital picked up her story and made her a minor celebrity. With no job and no money for school, Riza felt like she'd finally found her calling in life, something that made her feel worthy. Her exploits became the stuff of local and sometimes national legend as she went up against every criminal organization she could find, often embarrassing their leadership in very public ways. Though she was technically a vigilante, the local police turned a blind eye to her actions. In return, she provided a boost to their stats, and helped to clean up the streets. Wielding a stolen THI Hardlight Blade taken from a dead Yakuza enforcer, she was a champion of the people. Aguila seized upon her growing fame, capturing as much of her work and broadcasting it far and wide, turning her into a household name. That all changed when she discovered a connection between a local politician and drug-pushing mobsters. In her typical unsubtle manner, she crashed into the councilwoman's office, cutting a swath through her security team. But when she hauled the corrupt politician into the street, she found herself facing down a SWAT team. Surrendering, she was arrested, and in the days that came she discovered that it had all been a setup. The evidence was fake, and she was on the hook for assault, battery, reckless endangerment and a laundry list of other crimes. Sentenced to New Alcatraz, she has spent the last year in jail. But now her prison time has been bought out by Toku Heavy Industries, and she finds herself in Neo-Tokyo, with an opportunity to work off her debt to the NEG should she choose to accept it. Action +3 Banter +2 People's Champion: +1 (Combat, Contacts, Provoke, Physique, Rapport, Will) Action: Photonic Blademaster Riza has been using her THI Hardlight Blade for years now, and she's gotten pretty good at it for someone without proper training. It's not easy to get the balance right on one of these things, after all! Banter: I'm calling you out! Well-known for her public challenges, she know just how to get the blood boiling. The first mistake any opponent makes is to rise to her insults. People's Champion: Somebody had to stand up Riza's rise to fame started when she finally had enough of seeing her home get vandalized by local punks. No one else was willing to say anything, and the cops were all too willing to focus on more important matters. Riza was tired of waiting on a hero, so she had to become one. Omega: Can't walk away from people in need Riza doesn't do what she does for fame or money, she does it because she's been down and low before. She knows what it's like to need help, and bad. So when she sees people who are truly in need, commonplace, everyday folks like where she came from, she has to help out. It's not in her nature to say no. +5 Provoke +4 Combat, Physique +3 Athletics, Contacts, Notice, Rapport, Vehicles, Will +2 Deceive, Empathy Stunts THI Hardlight Blade. +1 to Notice rolls in darkened areas; Weapon: 2 Proprietary THI technology, the hardlight blade is a revolution in weaponry. Weighing almost nothing, it allows the wielder the ability to perform feats of swordsmanship impossible with a normal blade. Riza has mastered the technique of broadening the blade, allowing her to knock foes out rather than slice them open. Uller Tober-B/4 Armored Bodysuit. Armor: 2 Designed for undercover police, this bodysuit was made to fit under street clothes and remain unnoticeable for those in covert law enforcement. A gift from the LAPD's organized crime unit, this bodysuit has saved Riza's life more times than she can count. She prefers to wear it with just a short jacket, cultivating the superhero look she likes so much. I got friends in low places. +2 to overcome actions with Rapport when interacting with blue-collar folks Riza comes from a working-class family, and she knows how to talk to street people. Her name gets her a free drink in most honest bars, and everybody there wants an autograph or a picture with her. She never left behind her roots, and people appreciate her plain speech and honest face. Her kind of people will go a long way to help her out. Underdog. +1 to defend with Combat when facing a superior enemy or outnumbered Riza's gone up against bad odds and come out on top before. Just look at the video of her first fight against the Century Block Boys. Seven on one and she still walked away! And later on, when going up against mobsters in stolen power armor, she managed to stay one step ahead, always finding a weakness. In a tight spot, nobody knows how to come through like Riza. Streetfighting Woman. +2 to create an advantage with Athletics while fighting in an open, urban environment She learned how to fight on the street, taking on bullies when she was just a girl. It didn't take her long to figure out how to climb on top of a dumpster and drop an elbow on a kid twice her size. In her natural habitat, she still remembers the lessons of those early fights, how to use the terrain to her advantage. On a street or in an alley, she knows just how to trip up the competition. ...gently caress it's a good thing a spot is being held. Still working on the specifics. Name: Jam. (The paperwork says Kumashiro Chihaya, but she's crossed that out.) Daughter of Hajime and Mariko Kumashiro, board members of THI, Chihaya grew up with everything money can buy. She also grew up entirely too aware of many of the secrets of the company, and the dangerous crap that's out there in the world. Home life wasn't exactly normal, either. When she was younger, she didn't really understand why there was a steady parade of young men and women who would stay as guests for a week or two at a time - it wasn't until she was old enough to know what "open marriage" meant that she fully grasped what was going on. Her parents, discreet to the outside world, never felt it was important to keep their only child in the dark about their indiscretions. So she withdrew, and rebelled. At first, she got into hacking - it was something she could do from home without being noticed, and it came easily to her. Then she started skating and tagging - arcane wards that she'd learned through some illicit sites. She also started listening to heavy techno beats while she worked, and even started making and releasing her own music into the wild. Then Mom and Dad found out, and things got tense. Jam - her handle on the various sites she frequented - was clearly going to keep getting into dangerous situations as a way to rebel, but rather than try to stop her, they put a condition on her continued activities: she would join a Tiger Team. This would make sure she had some protection and channel her behavior into something useful - and ensure that when the time came for her to inherit a position in the company she would be prepared. Jam doesn't mind working, even relishes it. She hates people treating her special because of her family, and does her absolute best not to let anyone know who her parents are, preferring to go by her handle at all times. To avoid being recognized, she wears a hefty hoodie (with cute cat ears), omnipresent AR goggles, and a very expensive set of headphones at all times while on the job. Complimenting this are striped tights (a bit ripped) and heavy workboots when she's not wearing her skates. Nobody's going to finger HER as a princess. quote:Aspects: MollyMetroid fucked around with this message at 05:31 on Feb 18, 2015 |

So here are some in-character questions for you. If I have a GM question as well, I'll put it in italics.Kumaton posted:Rose Hachimitsu! It's good to see you again. I'm sorry things didn't work out with RESCUE, but I think this is a great opportunity! So, our first question: Have you ever been on a team where someone was not pulling their own weight? How did you handle it? TheTatteredKing posted:Vivian, I'm a bit concerned with your file. Your skills are just what we need, but your approach is a bit problematic. I'd like to ask - what was the most difficult period in your life, and how did you deal with it? Davin Valkri posted:Thomas Atkin Tienni. You've got a pretty impressive resume here. It's a bit... narrow though. Most of the other candidates know how to fight, but they've got extensive training on other fields. What can you do for us that other candidates can't? Mr. Fowl posted:Your accomplishments speak for themselves, Goro. But this is a bit different from your previous work - it's a team environment. So, how would you feel about working for someone who knows less than you? The Deleter posted:I've heard the name Alaric Burkhart before. I have to admit, I'm a little worried given your previous work. Team members have to rely on each other, either to get their jobs right the first time or ask for help if they need it. Give me an example of a time you did something wrong. How did you handle it? Waffleman_ posted:Dr. North, the strides you've made with your research are nothing short of amazing. That being said, here at Toku we take feel how we accomplish something is just as important as what we accomplish. Sometimes we decide not to pursue certain opportunities for that reason. Tell me, how do you feel about taking no for an answer? sentrygun posted:Hi Berry! I'm so glad you're the one they assigned me to interview, for training they said, because you're way cooler than all these nerdy scientists and military weirdos! It's not they're boring, I mean they have the craziest stories, but they're all so serious about it! Why can't they just have some fun? Oh, right, I have to ask you a question. Uh - Tell me about a time where you had to deal with personality conflict on the job. Brainamp posted:Yumi - is it all right if I call you Yumi? - I have to say you've definitely got the talent for the job. What we want to find out is whether it really is the right fit for you. There's no right or wrong answer, but if you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be? Bendigeidfran posted:It's always nice to meet another mecha vet, Lt. Nishikiori. You've got quite a reputation as a test pilot. I know the type. So, here's a tough question - what assignment was too difficult for you, and how did you resolve the issue? Alien Rope Burn posted:Haru, thanks for coming in. You've been through this before, for your internship, but this role... I'll be frank with you. There's no way you'd be considered for this position just based on your resume. But I've read your file, so I know it isn't someone playing a mean-spirited prank on you. Still, you're going to be working with people who are a lot more professionally accomplished. If I were to ask your last supervisor to provide you additional training or exposure, what would she suggest? ProfessorCirno posted:Dennis - er, Hollywood - I'm sure you don't remember but we've actually met before. During Operation HEAVENLY ENCLOSURE, the one where you got your, uh, big break. I'm pretty familiar with your methods. Tell me, what are three positive character traits you don't have? So Icey Seifuku posted:Vladislava, I have to say your personal file is... very interesting. I have just one question: If you found out your company was doing something against the law, like fraud, what would you do? Serf posted:Riza, I admire what you were trying to do, even if I have reservations about your approach. Still, that basic sense of right and wrong is something we look for with candidates for this position, given the kind of decisions you might have to make. I'd like to know, what is your biggest regret and why? Zandracon, I'll need a bit more from you to consider the application. e X, let me know when you've done your adjustments for the different setting and I'll get you a question. Held slot players, I'll have questions for you too a little later.

"I do hope this is worth my time, Mr. Takahashi. Anna! Get me some coffee!" "Yes, Doctor!" "How well do I take no for an answer...Well, the fact that I pursued independent study should tell you as much. Scientific progress waits for no man! Did Isaac Newton say no when an apple fell on his head? Did Edison say no when he killed an elephant? Did Alexander Graham Bell say no when the first phone said 'Is anyone there?' No scientific advancement was ever made saying 'no!' ....Though....I suppose those men also didn't have to worry about their bosses...It IS nice having regular income to support my independent experiments. I suppose it all depends on the circumstances. At best, I'd accept it but not like it." "Here's your coffee, Doctor. Should I get some for Mr. Takahashi?" "Thank you, Anna. No, Mr. Takahashi's only here to ask me a couple things. He's a busy man, and I assume he shall be leaving soon. A good leader? A good leader is one who is willing to put everything on the line for the greater good. A good leader stays cool in times of crisis. A good leader is mindful of the feelings and desires of their underlings. I had to lead several experiments at Miskatonic, including my graduate thesis, so I know what is needed to keep a team together. Now, you should be off. We're both very busy."
