The pit is great during the day. Seeing Orphx, or Voices from the Lake or TommyFourSeven at 3 pm is pretty fun. But yea it's a poo poo show by sundown.

The hotel advice is huge. It;s worth it to pay a bit more for a better place. The first year I stayed at a crap motel thinking i'm a hard rear end dude who has slept in worse places. It was a terrible decision because you're basically dancing for 10 hours+ everyday. The next year I paid a bit more and got a place that was a 10 minute walk from the festival with solid AC and a nice bed. Worth every penny.

Yeah for sure, I saw Juan Atkins there years ago when the programming was a bit different and there was a big dance circle in the pit. It can be pretty intense getting in and out to get drinks/washroom/whatever when the big names are playing. I commited to a few artists set's like Ben Klock and then moved on. YMMV.

We loved our airbnb because the hallway to our room was completely sound proof, and we ended up throwing a little party with all the people staying there. Got to meet lots of interesting people from all over the world. Definitely an experience I might not have had if I stayed in a big hotel. It was about 30-45 minutes away from the festival though so I'm not sure if I would do it again.

Who will win the greatest battle of them all?

One question that'll probably come up for Movement: VIP vs GA. Benefits this year got scaled back (no more free drink tickets wtf), all in all, I found it well worth the upgrade.

quote:

VIP Ticket Details:

Private check-in area and entrance

Access to large area above and behind the main stage

Variety of deluxe furnished areas for relaxation

Viewing platforms for multiple stages

Discounted drinks available at VIP bars

Exclusive premium drink choices available at VIP bars

Deluxe private executive bathroom trailers

Complimentary chair massage in the main VIP area

A pair of Movement 2015 Sunglasses

Official Movement T-shirt (while supplies last)

Access to the Official Movement VIP hotel, while supplies last

(An email will be going out to all VIP ticket purchasers very soon providing access to reserve your room)

Perks I liked most were check in and bathrooms having zero wait. On top of that, check in had lax security, bathrooms were much nicer than the portapotties.

One huge tip I learned last year was the DanceSafe tent. I'm not just saying this for :420: safety, because they have stuff like sunscreen, bandaids, condoms... the best part is they will refill water for free, so bring an empty camelbak/nalgene or whatever and save money.

Also the vip drink discount was pretty significant last year, like 3 or 4 less per drink. If you are going to drink there it will probably save you a decent chunk even without the free drink tickets.

It's totally worth going, I had a blast last year.

Who will win the greatest battle of them all?

Oh yeah, some comments on Movement afterparties: I'm ashamed to say I have yet to go to soul skate, but this year, I'm planning to play it by ear and no more buying presales.

St. Andrews and Bleu can both eat poo poo. There was no point buying presales since the line still took over an hour for both the afters I hit at those venues (Ghostly and CLR).

breaks
May 12, 2001

Yeah that CLR party was a nightmare, way oversold.

For the dark stuff, Interface/Scene was really good last year and tickets just went on sale today! The Works is a pretty grungy club but that just makes it more techno-appropriate I think.

Been to Amsterdam but not to that festival. Main things I heard from a friend who went last year are it's really small so you can easily hop across stages and the sound is stellar all around. Every stage has Funktion Ones. Either Mixmag or XLR8R (maybe both) had glowing reviews. Looks like the format has changed a little, there's an opening event and some other venues outside Amsterdam Bos to be used for that opening night party and possibly night programming.

Got my ticket to the opening night and the 3 days.

e: I'll do the same real soon for Dimensions, which just dropped their initial lineup. They announced a capacity limit this year!

Question: are festivals like Dekmantel and Dimensions similar to festivals in North America where most DJs play shorter sets. 1 or 2 hours max.
I love Movement and the chance to see so many artists in 3 days but lately I've started to dislike the quick hitting sets and much prefer the longer sets at after-parties.

What am I saying!? I should just go solo and have a blast.

Expect something similar to Movement, where most sets are 60-90 minutes and then there's a few like how last year Chris Liebing got 3 hrs underground. I'm having trouble getting the link copied on my phone... punch Dekmantel 2014 timetable into Google and you'll see it's the very first result. There's some longer sets listed.

I think you said you're going to be in Berlin too? I'm looking to add a Berghain visit as well after Dekmantel.

Yea I'll be in Berlin from June to early August. I was there for 2 months also a few years ago. Berghain obviously is a must but if Stattbadt is open it's also worth checking out. As is Salone Zur Wilden Renate, Club Visionaire and obviously Tressor if only for the smell.

The boiler room at Stattbad is a must, most atmospheric club space in Berlin imho as well as easier to get into than Berghain... Show up at midnight for BH and get a stamp/get rejected while the line is still short, better than standing on line for 2 hours at 4am for nothing...

e: hope everyone got the Levon Vincent free LP yesterday!

Levon - "This is music for the ugly ducklings of the world. Music for swans. If you are you're a member of the rat race, climbing around a dumpster with the other rats vying for power, you may of course listen, but know - this is not music for you. This is action against you."

My radio show is on today from 2-4 PM. It's called Anachronisms and mixes a lot of techno with classical music. It's weird as gently caress and a cool space for me to try some experimental things. Thought I'd share the info here cause you guys got taste and we're basically all pals. It's on the Toronto Radio Project which is a cool station (they have shows from Ebony, Nautilus, Kevin McPhee and other Toronto folk).

I will play this. No matter the mix I always play Basic Channel, Orphx, and some Sandwell District stuff.

I was at Dekmantel last year and it was loving stellar, I unreservedly recommend it. Highlights were MCDE, Three Chairs, Nicholas Jaar. Great atmosphere. Tickets are cheap but it's pretty expensive on the site, take a bunch of money.

Edit: Also Bicep, Blawan, Jackmaster + Oneman, Mount Kimbie ... Now I'm thinking of going back.
