My disdain for you all knows no bounds.
Artelind's Request

PC-88 Version

Expect to see this a lot.

: Oh joy, I can tell this is going to be fun.

: Not this again.

: Back up we go?

Another Sonicker patrols this area. It should be noted that any tiles the FOEs step on and damage tiles are completely safe.

: We just fell into one a few minutes ago!

: Ooh! Treasure!

: AAAAHHHHH!!

In retrospect, that one was kind of obvious.

: Oh for the love of-

: Ugh...

: Uh, might as well look around while we're down here, right?

: Urge to kill... rising...

: Oh if you think this is bad, you don't want to go to the Claret Hollows.

: Oh, does that have anything to do with Etria?

: Maybe. What's it to you? At any rate it doesn't matter now.

: Hmph. Every time I ask him about Etria, he clams up.

: Maybe he would be more open if you weren't so nosy about it.

: You've... got a point.

I'm severely tempted to link to what I call pitfallhell.png, but I won't.

: :geno:

Here's the Sonicker's patrol path.

It goes down easily.

: Grrr...

: This is boring.

: Oh sorry, falling down and breaking your bones several times isn't fun enough for you?

So here's another Sonicker. Just follow it or pay attention to where it walks over.

: OH MY GOD!

: How did Artelind even get through this place?

: Probably the same way we did.

That pitfall lead us to some treasure. Better than the last one at least.

The other Sonicker's patrol path.

: Sometimes I question why I went into this whole thing in the first place.

: :sigh:

: :bang:

: AAAAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHH!

: Somebody get us out of this hellhole!

Thankfully that was the last of the pitfalls.

And we get a decent consumable out of that treasure chest we saw earlier.

And we're done with this floor, aside from that section Ling needs to go through.

Just a short little passageway here. We're completely done with the 8th floor now.

At this point I realized I needed Nick for something.

So I went back and-

Today, we're going to observe the hunting habits of the explorer panda.

The grass here looks to be well-trod. You can tell the path continues to the other side. You use your keen senses to determine whether the opening is large enough to fit through. You slobber happily, discovering that you can fit. The question now is, should you?

The panda spots its prey. A creature, known as the Kilohorn. The two lock eyes, waiting for the other to make the first move.

Kilohorn
Type: Normal
Behavior: Proximity
Aggressive: Yes
HP: 1635
AT: 54
DF: 55
Skills: Deathorn, Neigh
Item Drops:
-Common: Steel Horn - See Actaeon bio.
-Rare: N/A
-Conditional: Kilo Horn - Kill while head bound. 3 needed for Ill Wind (Bow.)
--Complex horn resembling a many-branched tree.
Description: Chief of the Actaeon family. Its enchanting horn is the last thing many will ever see.
Weakness: Fire (125%)
Resistance: N/A

The Kilohorn is a powerful creature, considered to be a higher form of the Actaeon. As such, it shares the same attacks as they do.

: Heh.

The panda is the one to initiate. Using tricks that it learned from living with humans, it uses a bell to put the Kilohorn to sleep, so that it can get the first strike.

PC-88 Version

It uses the extra time it gained to apply a protective mist to itself.

This dulls the effectiveness of the Kilohorn's attacks.

The two creatures wrestle, biting and thrashing about in an attempt to subdue the other.

Look at that utter display of brutality! Pandas can be very dangerous creatures when provoked.

The panda is tired, being forced to use medicine to heal its wounds.

Seeing this display of weakness, the Kilohorn believes it has won. And bellows at the panda to asert its dominance.

However, the panda isn't cowed, and instead takes advantage of the Kilohorn's arrogance to strike the final blows.

: Hmph. :smug:

And now-

Well that was a bit of a tricky fight, but it's one I got through just fine.

PC-88 Version

Oh, now this will come in handy. The Vigor Belt is an upgrade from the Life Belt. Adds some extra defense, but more importantly, it can be used as Revenge fuel. Unfortunately these can't be bought until the 5th Stratum, but one will suit my purposes for now.

And now the 9th floor is completely finished. There's nothing more for us here. Oh right, I was about to explore the rest of the secret areas.

So here's another Sonicker. It patrols the lower part of this room.

: Say... where's Ling? I haven't seen him around.

: Dunno. I think I saw him wandering around a while back. I think it was around that area we couldn't fit through.

: Maybe he got curious and wanted to explore it himself?

: Will he be alright there?

: The panda is trained to deal with 4th Stratum monsters. I'm sure he'll be fine at this point.

: I hope so.

PC-88 Version

: Just stand still Aegis.

: This better be worth it. And not another one of your “special techniques.”

: What? It's just a simple trap. Sheesh.

: Hmph, make it quick. My legs are sore and need a rest.

: Don't you worry about that! I got medicine for it! That I'll finish in a while.

: Here, let me help you with that! I know a bit about medicine myself!

: Aw, thanks!

: Oh, so there is something you're good for. I was beginning to think you were a complete waste of space. Oh wait, you still are.

:

1st Turn is a bit situational, but it's a godsend for slower party members, and slow parties in general. While this does eat up the Survivalist's turn, they're not really good for much in this game.

: Got ya!

: Hmm, now that was impressive.

Unlike EO1, which had the Dark Hunter dish out a weaker blow if an adjacent party member got hit, the Bait skills deal full damage no matter who gets attacked. Oh, and it can proc for AOEs as well. It's pretty powerful.

PC-88 Version

The gimmick of this secret area is that there's a lot of doors.

All but three of them don't lead anywhere.

: That was a waste of time.

: Dude, chill out. There's one over there we haven't gone through!

The doors to the far right don't take us further in, but we need to go here. There's treasure for one thing.

Oh, and these two doors lead to the same place. But more importantly...

This is where we can find Artelind.

: There she is!

It is the lady you seek... She address your party, surprised to see you.

: Firefly? Why are you here?

You recoil slightly at her intense, hostile stare... You are unsure how to answer the question...

The other two options don't do anything, and we'd have to talk to her again. The middle choice is the right one.

: We were just worried about you.

: Worried about me...?

Your words seem to have been the last thing the black-haired witch expected.

: We barely know each other... Why all the concern?

She responds to you, a dubious tone in her voice.

: Or... are you really worried about the girl you defeated in the third Stratum? The girl who was transformed into Scylla, the Ice Queen...

Artelind wears a mournful expression, continuing to speak while facing downward.

: We heard you wandered into the forest alone, and got a bit concerned. Going into this place by yourself is a bit dangerous, even if it is just the 2nd Stratum. Wilhelm's worried about you too, you know.

: Look... if you really want me to come back, I'll need you to help me with something. Please... You have to kill the ruler of the heavens, up in that floating castle! If he's defeated, I just know the demons will return to their original forms... But... Our guild could never even get close to the floating castle. If you kill the ruler of the skies, I know Scylla will finally be at peace.

Artelind looks at you, desperately awaiting a reply. What should you say...?

: Yeah, we will.

Artelind's face lights up as she hears your response.

: I knew you'd help! Thank you...

Her tone softens as she expresses her gratitude for your kindness.

: I should go back now. I can't leave that worrywart alone, or he'll burst a blood vessel. You should take a break and explore around here before you start moving upwards.

She reaches into her bag and begins walking away from you.

: I'll go back to town first. Be careful on your way back.

She walks away, vanishing from your sight. The quest is complete! Report your success to the bar when you return to Lagaard!

So while we needed to go here to complete that quest, that wasn't the way forward.

To get further into this secret area, you need to go through this door.

I should note that the attack textbox came up before the blindside notice. Also there was no monster appearance notice. The starting battle text seems to have a bunch of weird bugs that pop up from time to time.

: Goddammit Ni-

: Oh shut up!

To the right, there's some treasure.

But aside from that, we're completely done with this floor.

This floor? This part of it is damage tile heaven.

Now I say heaven because we finally reached that shortcut we couldn't access for a long time. Which is near the Geomagnetic Field. In fact, it's very easy to set up a Revenge Hexer since you can just send one to the 6th floor, and have them :emo: until they get down to 1 HP.

: Hey, this is just a long hallway with a bunch of thorns in it! What gives?

: Maybe we missed something.

: Oh hey, it looks like we can get through here! It's gonna be a tight fit.

: And now we're trapped. Good job, Dark Hunter.

: We still have Warp Wires you know.

: Really? Because from what I heard from the Landskne-

: I have them with me right now. I didn't forget them.

Here's the actual gimmick for this secret area, one way passages. Several of them.

: Sweet! More treasure!

: Crap.

: You never learn, do you?

PC-88 Version

: LASSO UP!

: I'm both amazed and frightened at how many ways you can use that whip.

: I know a few more tricks with this whip! Wanna see some more? I could give you some private lessons...

: ...No, no, and for the love of god, NO!

: Oh wait, here's one I can do right now!

: What's he do- WHAT THE gently caress!?

: Come heeeeeere!

: WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU!?

: What's the big deal? I mean it-

: Yes, it's hosed up. Yes, we have to witness this poo poo every time he's with us. No, it does not get any better.

: I hate to tell you guys this, but that's not as bad as it gets.

: ...It gets WORSE!?

The other Kilohorn also dies pretty fast.

PC-88 Version

Some mediocre treasures, but we broke even on that Tree Key.

Unloading all my Force Skills onto this poor FOE, because why not?

Can you say, overkill?

: Okay, we've explored everything here... and found absolutely nothing at the end.

: Just a big ol' empty room.

: I'm wondering if that key was a good purchase.

: We got our 10,000en back, and a bunch of stuff that would help us out, so I wouldn't say it was a complete waste of money.

: We needed it to find Artelind too! Don't forget that!

Here's the last of the locked doors.

And now we're completely done with the 10th floor, and all the locked doors in the game.

PC-88 Version

: Welcome back! Did yeh find her?

: Yeah, we did.

: Good, good... The Labyrinth's dangerous for a girl alone, even if she knows what she's about. Ahhh, and here's that thing the old geezer told me to give yeh.

And we'll resume exploring the 4th Stratum in the next update.

Well, glad you liked that little nature documentary thing I did. I thought a regular commentary bit would have been boring, and pandas can't talk, so I had to get a little creative there.

Gonna try to push out an update later today or tomorrow. And voting should take place sometime after that. Now I'm hoping this won't be a two parter, but it might have to be. I really need to cut down on the character dialogue. They take up way too much space in the updates.

PC-88 Version

Starting off, here's the pitfall I said not to go down a few updates ago.

Because it doesn't lead anywhere useful.

: I didn't miss this. I didn't miss this at all.

: It was peaceful while it lasted.

: Heh heh heh. Now what should I start with? The head, or the legs?

: No! Fedot! Stop! Please! AAHHH!

: HA HA HA HA! FRESH MEAT!

: A pox upon you...

Yeah this is one of the nastier encounters. Status ailments can make things go sour real fast. Binds, not so much.

The vivacious colors on its wings are oddly alluring... If you reach out, you may be able to catch the butterfly.

: Oh how pretty! Aw, come back!

You frown and wonder if you could have more luck once it approaches you again.

: I'll get you this time!

: Whoa! Stop right there!

: Hey, what gives? I was about to catch it!

: And then fall into that pit over there?

: Oh.

It would be an ignominious fate to lose one's life from being distracted by a butterfly. You stare quietly at the insect for some time before giving up and moving on.

Saying yes twice results in falling into the pit. Never trust a butterfly.

I start having Aliara relearn Torpor, since there's not much else I want her to learn.

Megido still does a terrible amount of damage.

Here's the other Take point on this floor.

Fedot's regular attacks have a 13% chance to hit twice.

You can brush away the web and save the butterfly, or simply leave it to its fate.

: Oh, it's the butterfly from earlier.

: Poor creature. To run into such a cruel fate. Shall we set it free?

: Here you go. You may fly free!

The butterfly flits around your party as if in thanks, before it flies out of sight.

: Huh. Does anyone feel kind of... relieved?

: Now that you mention it, I kind of feel a bit better.

You couldn't have guessed it, but the butterfly's scales have a mysterious healing power!

You watch the butterfly go before returning to your exploration of the Labyrinth.

: Guys! There's a path through these trees!

: Look out below!

This pit takes you to a secret area.

A secret area with treasure!

: Happy thoughts Maverick... happy thoughts.

The exit sends us right back to the stairs.

Now I got really tired of being forced to sneak around the Voltking, since you'd have to do a ton of waiting to get past it due to how the map is designed.

:flaccid:

: Lousy useless formula! Why did I bother creating this mixture?

: Just keep at it. It took me a while to perfect my curses.

: Powder burns...

: How does it feel to be on the receiving end for once!?

: Maverick. It is a bad thing if anyone, not just us, has to push up daisies!

: Sorry. Being on the front lines can be a bit stressful. I think I'll stick to healing.

: This was a bad idea.

Unfortunately, several things went wrong with that plan.

: Necromastery!

I retooled Maverick's skillset so that he can heal people again. Combat Medic just wasn't working out.

Back at that room from earlier, there's a Flygourd in the north room.

It dies fast.

: How utterly useless.

: Not true. We can still give it to Ken when we get back.

: Ah, how heartwarming! A small gift to bring joy to his day!

: Uh, yeah. I guess so.

This pit leads to some more treasures. I have Gilbert equip the new helmet.

The exit for this area leads back into the areas from earlier.

There's a Shelltor in this part of the room.

PC-88 Version

Unfortunately, its movement patterns tripped me up, so I ended up getting into a fight with it.

Shelltor
Type: Normal
Behavior: Dance
Aggressive: No
HP: 1440
AT: 47
DF: 48
Skills: Defend, Jaws
Item Drops:
-Common: 100 Shell - 1 needed for Apollo Gun. 1 needed for the quest A diviner's tools.
--Carapace of a hundred-year-old turtle.
-Rare: Prehinite - See 4th Stratum Mine info.
-Conditional: N/A
Description: Those who would slay this giant turtle must contend with its hard shell and mighty jaws.
Weakness: N/A
Resistance: Physical (75%)

There's not really much to this guy. Its pretty tanky, and Jaws is a powerful physical AOE.

: Yeah, I think I'll just leave this to Bellamy.

: You know this works for you too, right?

: Yeah, but Bellamy's formulas are more powerful. Also lets me save a bit on ammo.

: :swoon: Aliara, are you absolutely sure that you don't-

: In your dreams.

: Okay, is there anything else I can do to show my appreciation?

: No.

: :saddowns:

PC-88 Version

And here's another Voltking. I don't mind being forced to dodge FOEs in the EO games, but I would at like it if you didn't have to go through so many hoops just to get past one every single time you're trying to explore the floor. Provide alternate paths or shortcuts so people don't have to do this more than once.

At least you don't have to wait a long time just to slip past this one.

: Didn't we already explore this area?

: Yeah, if you look at the maps, our landing spots line up with the pits. See?

: We probably should have looked at them a bit more carefully.

Things like that makes drawing good maps important, and I like that aspect of the series. Sometimes you're indirectly rewarded for keeping your maps up to date.

Still trying to take down that earlier Voltking. I'm having a bit more luck this time.

: Come ooooooooon! Don't leave me hanging!

: No.

: You're cruel. :saddowns:

Though I didn't get through this battle unscathed.

: :gibs:

: Goddammit Fedot! Ha! Been wanting to say that for a while.

: I hold no grudges myself.

The other reason I wanted to kill the Voltking was to get its drop again. I need it for a quest.

Now this pit is actually required to progress.

Your mouth waters to think of the honey that must be stored within...

: Mmm, quite delicious! The rest of you, have a taste!

: All right! Eh, uh oh.

When you reach towards the bee's nest, you feel a sense of malice in the air... It's an ambush!

: Crap, we pissed off the bees!

PC-88 Version

: :geno: I'm sure you can handle them.

PC-88 Version

Here's the last set of stairs, but we're not done yet.

The shortcut gives quick access to the stairs.

And a nice little consumable.

Now we're done with the 17th floor. Finally. That took a while.

: I hate this stupid Labyrinth.

: It shall be fine. There's not much of the 18th floor left. The pain shall finally stop.

One last Flygourd.

And the last of the treasures on these floors.

: Ohhh...

: Worry not Maverick, for you shall be able to rest soon.

Suddenly, an overpowering voice echoes from above!

: Father Ish and Mother Ishsha! Bless the earthbound people with the gift of new life!

The winged one looks at you as if in judgement.

: I have erred... You are not fit in the eyes of almighty Nuh to use the Grail of Kings. The path to the heavens will remain closed. Leave this place until the proper time comes!

The winged one's voice is firm, and he remains resolute in barring you from passing here. You think back to the phrase you learned at the Duke's Palace... Perhaps the winged one before you may relent if you speak it now.

If you haven't visited the Duke's Palace and learned about the pact, you'd be forced to go back at this point.

The winged one stares at you coldly as you stand before him, speechless.

: Leave, earthbound ones, and walk the paths of the ground.

It seems that only the words of the ancient pact will sway him.

You repeat the words the Duke's daughter taught to you before the winged one.

I think this is the only time in the entire series that your guild gets shown speaking out loud.

Their meaning remains murky, but the effect they have on the winged one is striking. He gazes at you with momentary surprise before spreading his wings and rising into the air.

: You bear the ancient pact! Shall those who descended to earth return to the heavens?

You no longer feel anyone else watching you... Their presences have vanished along with his. You are unsure whether to continue investigating or return to Lagaard for now.

: They seemed intent on barring our path until we spoke about the pact.

: Any idea what those words meant?

: Not a clue. I'm hoping we'll find out later.

Here's a more direct shortcut to the exit. The one on the 17th floor was in case you didn't find out about the pact.

: I'm done with this front line crap!

: Same here. I request that our more sturdy members are on the front for the rest of this Stratum.

: I'll see what I can do.

Good news, that's the last death we'll see in this part of the Stratum.

Because we're done with this floor!

: Wow! We're so high up!

: The sky looks so beautiful up here! I can only imagine what this place looks like in the daylight.

: Yeah, it's something all right.

Here's a better look at this area. Yep, you can see the sky on this floor. I personally think EO2 is the weakest entry of the main games, but the thing it does best without question are the aesthetics. The Strata in the other games just don't compare at all.

: Well, enough sightseeing. Shall we go back?

PC-88 Version

: Ah, yes... Your names have reached the Duke's ears. It seems his daughter told him.

: Where is the Duke's daughter at this moment?

: Mm? Where is she? Ohohoho! You wound me... Are you weary of looking at this old man? She is having high tea with a foreign dignitary, and cannot come down right now.

: Oh. :(

: Ah, don't look so downhearted. Am I not pleasant company? Er, all that side... You are the ones closest to reaching the floating castle. Once you find it, I'm sure the Duke's daughter will want an audience. Mm... I'm sorry to have rambled on a bit today. Good luck with your exploration.

PC-88 Version

: I, uh, wait, what?

: Ahaha! Joking, of course. Have you noticed the buzz around town lately? It's all thanks to you. I hear you met the winged ones. I never thought the Labyrinth would be home to such beings... The Grand Duchy is trying to quash the rumors. But three may keep a secret if two are dead. Everyone is looking to you now to find the truth behind the legendary floating castle. I am no exception. That's all the advice I have for you. May the Labyrinth's blessings be with you.

PC-88 Version

: I hear yeh saw some bird-people or whatever... Are yeh sure yeh can trust them?

: They haven't antagonized us so far. Why do you ask?

: They live in the friggin' Labyrinth! For all yeh know, they eat humans for lunch! Yeh know, there's many a story of explorers being fooled by harmless-looking beasties! Like... beautiful flowers, a small, fuzzy critter, a good-looking man or woman... Poisonous, each and every one of them! Well, those last two aren't in the Labyrinth, but... Anyways, be on yer guard at all times!

: Uh, guess I'll be doing this one. What's going on here?

: That one there's a job from the Ducal Bombardiers. Ah, yes, the details... Sounds like gunners are pretty hard to come by. Yeh wouldn't think so, with all the ones around here, but our technology’s a mite advanced. I've been places where I never seen a single one. So that's why gunners are in such high demand. With so few around, a lot of them banded together. That's the Ducal Bombardiers. Their sole aim is to advance gun technology and hone their skills as a group. But of course, any group has to have a leader. Theirs was quite the warrior, and quite the drinker as well! But he's dead now... A Labyrinth monster got him. The Bombardiers want every gunner to help get revenge. No one's forcing yeh... Yeh don't have to take it. But think about this. The gunner who finishes off that monster restores the Ducal Bombardiers's god name. Now doesn't that sound like a noble use of yer time? Eh?

: Uh...

: Think of the prestige... The honor that'll come to the one who does the job! I need hardly say it, but there's a reward, too. Oh, and one more thing...

: This is solely a Gunner's job, isn't it?

: That's right... This quest comes direct from the Ducal Bombardiers. They figure if yer crew doesn't have a gunner, it's none of yer business. A gunner's pride, yeh know? Their blood is up, and they're not taking it lightly. One more thing... Don't say a word about it to anyone else. The beastie that killed their leader's on the 19th floor. Everyone's after the critter. It won't be easy, so g'luck!

You need a Gunner to complete this quest. It doesn't matter how strong the Gunner is, you just need one in the party when you take on the monster.

: Sounds like quite the job. Oh, now what's this?

: Ahh... That one's from me, actually. This isn't easy for me to say... Yeh have to know... I treat everyone who walks in that door like royalty. I'm no noblemen, but I don't discriminate, and I aim for my bar to be the best in Lagaard. But I'm only human. I try not to get involved, but sometimes... A man can't help himself.

: Oh my, is this...

: Yeh see... Long ago, there was this one adventurer I really took a shine to. She just drifted in one day... Just like yeh lot. I'd see her from time to time, and I grew to fancy her, I did. She said the floating castle were no legend or myth, and she'd climb high enough to find it. Back then, nobody knew about the Labyrinth, yeh see. So I just laughed. Then one day, she came in and said she'd found a giant maze. I was the only one she told. I assumed it was a regular cave, and told her to lay off the sauce. All joking, like. But she didn't find it funny... And stormed right out that door. And... that were the last I saw of her.

: How tragic. :(

: ......

: And? You can't just leave us hanging like that!

: You have no problem doing that yourself.

: We had a bet going! If she was right, I was to pay up one shiny gold piece. If not, well... we hadn't decided yet. Haw, listen to me. This is no way to tell a story... There's nothing in it yeh can use. But she was talking about the Labyrinth, and I know in my heart she's in there somewhere. If any explorer made it up to the castle... it'd be her.

: Even if she is... Uh... How do I put this?

: But that place is a deathtrap. I'm not going to kid myself and pretend she's still alive. Still... if I don't pay up what I owe her, I'll never put this behind me. Could yeh... deliver this Old Coin to its rightful owner?

: What a moving tale... We will! I guarantee it!

This quest is another tile hunt, and one that can be messed up. It's actually really easy to complete, but getting the full reward is another matter. Although we were given a pretty big hint on how to complete it properly.

Now this quest is of an ongoing quest line.

: The guards again? Sheesh, seems like they always get in trouble.

: Ah, going to take up that one? It seems like a bit of a pain to me... Some of the Grand Duchy's guards were dispatched, but they're not back yet. It sounds urgent, so I'll explain the details. The reinforcements they sent haven't found any sign of the guards either. So they're looking for outside help to go find out what's going on in there. And that's the sumb of it. I can't say I expect yeh to find anyone alive... They lost contact with the guards on the 18th floor. Have a look around and I'm sure yeh'll find some sign of them. G'luck!

: Sorry? What for?

: Huh? Why am I apologizing? Oh, I just made a horrible mistake...! My last customer told me that I made an error. I wrote one extra zero in the price tag... It wasn't supposed to be that expensive! It's a good thing no one bought it before he figured it out... I'll have to be more careful!

The 100 Shell actually makes a gun that's a downgrade for Fedot, so I don't buy it.

PC-88 Verison

: You're role models... To the extent that explorers are trying Strata they're not ready for. It's good to have something to aim for, but their reach exceeds their grasp... I just wish everyone could take as good care of themselves as you manage to.

: Hahahahaha! Oh that's hilarious!

: Do you children know how famous you are in town? My daughter tells me that no matter where she goes, everyone is talking about Firefly! She's been bragging to her friends that Firefly stays at the inn where she works. Bahahaha! Even my husband asks his friends if they want to meet you! I can't believe how well-known you are now! You loves are like my very own children! Ahaha!

I'm sure you've noticed by now, but EO2's NPCs pretty much heaps praise on your guild throughout the game. It's a pretty huge contrast with EO1's NPCs (Not EOU's, since they added a lot more dialogue there) who barely acknowledge your efforts at times. Anyways, let's get to completing that quest on the 18th floor.

PC-88 Version

Now you recall the quest you accepted at the bar... You are to investigate the matter of the missing guards and report your findings. It sounds distinctly like a battle in progress, and you can hear human voices. Of course, they may be other explorers... It's up to you whether to investigate or not.

So those three FOEs down there are our main objective.

: There they are!

As you near its source, you see a group of guards fighting for their lives. A horde of monsters has fallen upon them! Unless you intervene, their chances are bleak. You may draw your weapons for a noble cause, or leave them to die and move onward.

These guys are actually weaker version of Windsnips. They're just more tanky. I don't even know what 4F is referring to. The map location? But they're fought on F5-F6.

Repeat 2 more times.

PC-88 Version

You turn to see that the guards are about to deliver the final blow to their opponent. They sheathe their weapons and turn to greet their reinforcements.

: We couldn't find our way home, and we've lost half our men. We had just about given up.

Once the guards calm down, you ask them what has happened there.

: What caused this?

: Even we're not sure. We saw a gold shadow, and the floating island was covered in storms... Before we understood what was going on, we were tossed around by the gale winds.

The guard's face turns pale as he speaks, recalling the horror. What was this golden shadow...? You tend to the wounded and show them the way back before leaving the area. Your quest is complete! All you must do now is report your success to the bar.

: Hmm...

Gunpowder explosions and the screams of monsters permeate the floor's atmosphere. The din reminds you of the quest you accepted at the bar... You volunteered the use of your gunner to avenge the Ducal Bombardiers' leader. There isn't a clink of swords or the chant of a spell to be heard here... Only gunfire. Without a doubt, the monster that slayed the Bombardiers' leader is on this floor! The intense clamor begins to make you anxious, and you leave the area.

Here's a look at this floor at day. I won't be doing that quest just yet.

PC-88 Version

: Ahh, yes, I heard from the Grand Duchy! Thank yeh very much. I heard not even half those guards survived... Is the fourth Stratum really that dangerous?

: The guards said something about seeing a golden shadow, and then everything went to hell. You know anything about it?

: Eh? A gold shadow...? Oh, yeh mean the ones they say they saw. No idea, sorry. I'm certain I'd have heard of a monster that could destroy an entire floating island! Maybe their eyes were playing tricks on them... Anyways, thanks again, and take care!

Now this quest is a little special. It pops up immediately after completing The golden shadow.

: Again?

: Ahh, it's yeh lot. Yeh should take this quest! It looks mite interesting! Apparently one of the guards on the lower level's gone missing, and they need help finding him. Don't yeh get a strange feeling about this one? I mean, without a map, it's easy to get lost... But we're talking about the guard corps. The Labyrinth's like their own backyard. Besides which they have copies of the maps yeh explorers make. Strange that one'd get lost. Which means... there's something peculiar going on here. Get the details from the Duke's Palace. I'm expecting to hear a good story later!

PC-88 Version

: Huh?

: Ah, hello, Guild Firefly. I was so caught up in my book that I missed your arrival.

: Is this about that quest with the lost guard?

: Oh, you've taken the quest? Good! Then I can be confident that the job will be done right! We received a call for help from a guard on the southeast part of the 3rd floor. We dispatched reinforcements, of course. But they, too, disappeared into the Labyrinth. No matter who we send, they can't seem to reach the people who need our help. Everyone who tries says they get dizzy, and before long, they end up at the 3rd floor entrance. But we can't just turn our back on one of our own. We must keep trying. I ask you, then, to help us rescue the guards in need. We are all relying on you.

PC-88 Version

Only a moment later you hear a distant howling... It's unlike the cry of a dog or wolf. The piercing sound is disorienting... You lose all sense of your surroundings. When the howling stops, your head clears, and you realize your surroundings have changed.

: Gah!

: Oh, my head!

: I don't... recall being at this spot a few moments ago.

The branches around you are wavy, almost as if you have been transported under water. You think back to the quest you accepted back at the bar... You were asked to save a guard who sent out a distress signal. The strange rift you just experience must be the work of some mysterious power. If you hope to proceed, you must take extra precautions.

: What was that?

: Ugh... I think... Hmm... Just watch your step for now.

You seem to have taken a wrong turn somewhere...

You seem to be at the floor's entrance... the stairs behind you lead to the floor below. If you hope to find the lost guard, you must try again and find the correct path! But if you believe this to be impossible, take these stairs and return to Lagaard in defeat.

So this quest should be familiar to those that have played EO1. There was a quest there where you had to traverse the right path, or you'd be sent back to the beginning. This is the exact same thing.

This is the path that you need to take.

After some time, you see the silhouette of a seated figure. Perhaps it's the man you seek...

The guard lets out a sigh, greatly relieved to see you. You ask if he is the one who sent out the distress signal and the guard responds.

: Are you alright?

: What happened to you?

: I heard this strange howl while on my regular patrol. Suddenly, I got caught in a weird rift.

The guard's explanation over, he leans on his weapon to stand, and thanks you. The strange rift enveloping the area slowly stabilizes, as the terrain returns to normal. After confirming the guard's safely, you leave the area.

: Hmm. Wonder what was causing all that. Now why don't we just- huh!?

Huh. Sounds kind of familiar. Can't remember why.

: Oh-oh-oh g-god. No... I didn't think there was one in this Labyrinth too!

: It's qu-quite l-large...

: No way. Th-that's a... dragon?

You have no inkling from whence it came, but it does not yet seem to have noticed you. Defeating it would bring glory, but this may be your only chance to escape with your life. You eye the dragon... It looks dangerous, and far beyond your capabilities...

Players who have played through EO1's postgame will know exactly know what this thing is and to run away immediately! Do not try to fight it!

Pfft, a dragon? Whatever. I'm sure I can take it at this point.

The elemental breaths in general are really weak in this game. By the time you fight Dragon properly, Voltage does pathetic damage, like 400 or so? And a Volt Mist reduces that to pretty much nothing. Blow really sucks though. A Bash Mist could help with that, but then you'd have to deal with Corrupt which can absolutely lose the fight for you.

: O-oh. Sorry. Yeah, I'm fine. Just didn't expect to see that thing here.

: Okay, daydreaming aside, can we get to killing this thing already?

: R-right.

Yes that's right, I'm gonna kill Dragon. A postgame boss that you're supposed to be at levels 60-70 in order to have a chance against it. Now if you leave the 3rd floor after Dragon spawns, it'll leave and you won't be able to fight it until later. In a normal playthrough, I wouldn't have considered doing fighting Dragon at this point, but EO has done things to me. I'm too far gone. Don't weep for me. Let's take a look at the team we'll be using.

Aegis has one of the most important jobs, and that is keeping the team alive.

Now unlike the Salamox fight, Nick has a much bigger job than using Dominate. He's gonna be one of our damage dealers for this fight. This why I bought the postgame whip for him. I also maxed out his strength. I need Nick to be doing a ton of damage in this fight.

Gilbert has the most important job, and that's using his Force Skill. Not only will that provide our party with a damage increase, it has a side effect we can take advantage of.

Fedot is probably the least important member in this fight, and we could probably beat Dragon without him. But hey, a guaranteed turn where Dragon can't do anything is nice. I also put the Haste Pin on him because Dragon has 90 AGI, and I want to make sure that Fedot is fast enough to pull off Riot Gun.

Aliara's just gonna be nuking down Dragon with Revenge. Now if I wanted to be optimal, I would have her HP at exactly 500, but I don't really care that much.

PC-88 Version

Those of you that played EO1 may notice that Scatter About is playing here instead of the regular boss music. Yeah, in the rest of the games Scatter About plays in the Dragon fights. The first game was an exception to that. For those that are new to the series, Scatter About is the optional/postgame boss theme. I'm not really a big fan of the track myself. Although I loved EO3's version of it. I think the drums really add a lot to the song. I wasn't a big fan of EO4's version though. The first two games shared the exact same version of the song. Anyways, let's take a look at our enemy.

Dragon
HP: 12000
AT: 92
DF: 100
Skills: Voltage, Curse, Fury
Item Drops:
-Common: Volt Scale - Unlocks Dragonbane and Volt Orb. Limited stock.
--Uniquely sharp scale of the magnificent Dragon.
-Rare: N/A
-Conditional: Amp Barbel - Kill with Volt. (100% drop chance) Unlocks Mobius Alb. Limited stock.
--Taken from the mane of the thunderous Dragon.
Description: This yellow dragon, master of lightning, has lived since time immemorial.
Weakness: Fire
Resistance: Volt (0%)

Yikes, look at those stats. Dragon's moveset has also changed a bit since EO1. Unlike the first game, he'll cast his elemental breath on certain turns instead of at random. Usually on the first turn, and then every 5 turns after that, although that won't always be the case. He can also cast it after he uses a certain move, but I'll get to that later.

Since Dragon always casts Voltage on the first turn, I had Aegis max out Antivolt for this fight. It'll buy us one turn.

And Nick will be casting Magibait to compliment Antivolt.

Gilbert won't cast Crusade just yet. I had him do that in an earlier take, and it backfired horribly on me. I'm sure some of you can figure out why.

Unfortunately, Fedot's not really gonna do much in this fight.

Aliara's Force Skill isn't gonna be a factor here. She's just gonna spam Revenge throughout the fight.

: N-Nick. A-are you s-sure this is quite safe?

: Don't worry, if Aegis cooperates, we'll be just fine!

: That's what I'm worried about...

: As tempting as it would be to leave the Dark Hunter to fend for himself after all the poo poo I've witnessed him pull off, and all of you as well, I do have to admit I'm curious to see what's at the top of this Labyrinth. So let's just get this over with.

: Fear nothing! How the gently caress does this even work?

I know Gilbert isn't a damage dealer, but yech.

: O-o-over h-here! Ohhh, I don't think I did much!

: Just stay still, Gilbert. Heh heh heh.

: My pain is your pain!

: BEHIND ME!

: Was that supposed to hurt? I feel like I just got a relaxing massage. :smug:

: Ha! Told ya it would work!

Even if the damage from attacks are blocked, counters will still activate, so Dark Hunters synergize well with Protectors.

: Ah, how relaxing...

: Oh wonderful, I'm still alive! And what a refreshing aura!

Behold, the true power of the Dark Hunter! Nick just did a total of 1372 damage! This is without buffs, for the record.

: Oh that feels nice.

: Oh come on, Aegis! How am I supposed to make the dragon suffer if I can't share my pain with it!?

: Oh I'm sorry, would you rather have been electrocuted by its breath? Because I can just leave you die, you know.

: Grr...

And this is the problem with a max level Antivolt. It heals Aliara so she won't be able to deal damage with Revenge anymore. I could just leave it at level 8 so it would just nullify the damage, but Antivolt is much less reliable at that point, and I didn't want to play around with RNG for this fight. This is why I held off on casting Crusade. Otherwise Antivolt would've completely healed Aliara, and left her with no way to damage Dragon.

: Uhh...

: Bravo leader, I'm sure those bullets heavily wounded the dragon. :golfclap:

: Oh quiet.

Yeah, Fedot's not really equipped for this fight.

Aegis is gonna buy us another free turn.

Dragon has a bunch of physical attacks it can use, so Bait is a relatively safe bet here. Although if it decides to use a buff, Nick won't do anything.

Now I'm gonna have Gilbert cast Crusade. It should increase Nick's attack power, and raise the HP cap for Aliara.

Fedot still won't do much.

And the HP boost from Crusade will give Aliara enough extra HP to start nuking down Dragon again.

: Go ahead, attack me! I dare ya! I'm perfectly defenseless!

: Don't mind me, I'm just going to... stand over here. In front of the Dark Hunter. And the Troubadour. And well, everyone else.

: May you all find your inner strength, and the courage to fight!

: Hahaha! Now that's more like it!

This is probably the best thing that could have happened this turn. Blow is a physical AOE that deals Bash damage, and has a chance to Terrify your party members.

: Nope.

: Tsk tsk. I thought you would've learned by now, but I guess not.

And Nick just dealt a total of 2053 damage to Dragon! Yeah, when I said Dark Hunters were broken, I wasn't kidding.

: HAHAHAHAHA!

This is after the damage boost. Fedot really doesn't have much to do here.

Now just in case things go wrong here, I'm gonna try to have Aegis Provoke Dragon's single target attacks.

Nick is gonna set up a Dominate.

Gilbert's job is done.

Fedot's gonna help Nick set up a Dominate now.

Aliara's just gonna do the same as always.

: FIGHT ME!

: Stay still for a sec, will ya?

: YEEEHAAAWW!!

Now that Dragon is all tied up, this is the perfect time to show off Ecstasy.

Corrupt is a move that Dragon uses when your party has too many buffs. It'll dispel every single buff and will either Curse your party members, or instantly kill them. Also after using it, it'll use Voltage again. While Painless can protect against the Curse and instant death components, it can't protect the team from debuffs or dispels. But you know what can?

Head binds! :haw:

: Aww, what's the matter little dragon? That muzzle's a little too uncomfortable for you? Maybe you'll feel better after I do this!

: Oh god. Everyone, look away now!

: OH YEEAAAAAAH! Ahhh...

: MY EYES HAVE BEEN TAINTED! FOREVER BURNED IN MY MIND! AGAIN!

: I never thought I would be the one to ask this question to anyone, but WHAT THE gently caress IS WRONG WITH YOU, NICK!?

: I warned you.

: That. Was. AWESOME! DO IT AGAIN!

: No! Don't! No one needs to witness that twice! Or at all!

Ecstasy nukes a fully bound target for 750% damage! It's super easy to set up thanks to Dominate. But since Dominate didn't exist in the later games, they tried to rebalance those versions of the skill by making the damage scale with the amount of binds. EO4's version wasn't that good since it dispelled the binds on the target. EOU got rid of the bind dispelling aspect, and it ended up being a really good skill to use. It somehow avoided being hit with the nerf bat in the EO2 remake, and actually got buffed if you can believe it. A level 20 version of Ecstasy deals 2000% damage to a fully bound target.

Chipping away at Dragon a bit more.

: Well, if the little lady insists...

: Yay! :neckbeard:

: You are the absolute worst.

: I'll never understand what goes through her mind.

Dragon will keep trying to cast Corrupt since our party has 15 buffs, but since his head is bound, he's effectively helpless.

: Ha ha!

:flaccid:

:saddowns:

Unfortunately, Ecstasy does a terrible amount of damage if the target isn't fully bound.

: Oh thank goodness! My eyes are spared from another tragedy!

: :geno: You're dead to me, Nick.

: No, come on I can still-

: DEAD TO ME!

And Dragon goes down! :woop:

PC-88 Version

I didn't get the conditional drop, but we'll have another opportunity to fight Dragon later. And since he's a postgame boss, he doesn't give out any exp.

PC-88 Version

: H-holy crap! Did we just... beat a dragon!?

: I believe we just did.

: Hmm. Can't say I was expecting us to pull that off. Good job Hexer. And Nick.

: Heh th-

: For the record, you still disgust me.

: That was awesome! I can't believe we did that!

: Hoo boy. Yeah, good job all of you. Huh? Looks like Dragon dropped something.

Who could have foreseen this? It can only be the fruit of your daily training regimen! The dragon soars into the sky and disappears elsewhere in the Labyrinth. Exulting in your victory, you carefully stow your spoils of battle, and leave the area.

And now our guild is filthy rich again. If you manage to kill Dragon, he'll drop 50,000en. See, unlike the mission with Salamox, which was mandatory, quests can be put off for later. So Atlus had this prepared in case this quest was taken on when a party would be strong enough to take down Dragon.

: Well that should make up for some of the money we lost because of Nick's spending habits.

: Hey! That whip was a good purchase! I tamed a dragon with it!

: ...I guess I can't argue with that.

PC-88 Version

: Ahhh, yeh did it! A messenger from the Grand Duchy just came to deliver the news. Something about that monster's howl was warping the forest. It's one eerie place, with monsters like that around. Anyways, glad to have yeh back. Here's the reward... Care to make a donation? Come back anytime! Haw haw haw!

Cass does not have any alternate dialogue if you managed to kill Dragon. He doesn't give you an extra reward either, Dragon already gave you one.

The Volt Scale sells for quite a lot, even though it's just Dragon's regular drop. Oh if only that were the case in EO1. Remember that Dragon is a postgame boss. As for what it unlocks...

The Volt Orb provides 100% resistance against Volt attacks, but not too many enemies use elemental attacks. It's only useful if you're trying to fight Dragon again, and I'm not really sure immunity to an element is worth an accessory slot. Still, I gained 70,000en, so money isn't a problem for me again. So I'd say that was well worth it.

Once again Atlus, fantastic game balance.

Like I've said, I've been planning this one for a while. I even dropped a few hints about it in the updates. Such as me buying Nick's postgame whip for absolutely no reason, and Aegis having Antivolt. Though for a while, I was kind of wondering how I was gonna pull that off since Dragon was on a whole different level than Salamox. I did some calculations, and I thought it was impossible at first because I couldn't get Aliara's HP high enough to hit the cap. At best, it would've taken her 8 turns to kill Dragon, which flat out wasn't happening. I was gonna give up and put this quest off for later, but then as I did this LP, I stumbled upon a few things which made me change my plans.

I completely forgot about these. Adding in Nick and the Vigor Belt made a huge difference. Not having that meant Aliara would've done 127 less damage per Revenge cast, which is pretty huge. For the record, I ended up doing a total of 12176 points of damage in that fight. So yeah, that extra 50 HP was pretty essential. If it weren't for that, it would've taken me at least an extra turn to kill Dragon, and 1 turn can be all it takes for everything to go wrong in an EO game.

So is this the postgame version of the boss, or did you really just steamroll one of these guys at 30-50 levels lower than you were expected to?

The stats are exactly the same as the fight in the proper quest.

The fights aren't any different if that's what you're asking. The Dragon fight here is exactly the same as the Dragon fight in the postgame, when you're actually expected to fight him. I forgot to mention it in the update when I first posted (but edited in later), but Dragon actually despawns when you leave the 3rd floor. So really, this is just an early opportunity to fight Dragon if you really wanted to.

I can't wait to see the rest of this game brought to its knees.

Great job so far! This has been a pleasure to read.

Because change
Seriously Fetus, I see why you shouldn't unleash the most broken poo poo you can when you get back to the actual dungeon crawling. I don't think anyone will bitch if you just cart around SUPER Nick and REVENGE Aliara around for the rest of the game.

Super Nick would be enough to break the game in half at this point. He wouldn't even need REVENGE Aliara. Plus if he wanted to go all out he could make Fedot even stronger, but that would make the game way too easy.

Minor Notes: Floors 19 and 20

Now this is when the Stratum actually gets nasty. Tons of status effects will get thrown around a lot. I'm talking stuff like high damage poison, sleep, petrification, and instant death. Oh, and the enemies can still hit pretty hard too. There's no more class specific shortcuts in the game, we're completely done with those. Also, a ton of FOEs are gonna bar our way. They can be avoided, but to do that involves exploring the floor at specific times, which can get really tedious. It's just much less of a hassle to kill them than trying to avoid them. They're not too strong at any rate, but they can inflict petrification. There's also a lot of bird enemies in this part of the Stratum, which means that physical attackers who can use bows or guns will shine.

Top Picks

: We're gonna be killing FOEs. Lots of them. Nick (Who will not be keeping the postgame whip) is one of the best party members for FOE extermination thanks to Climax. He can also dish out tons of damage with Bait and Magibait should the opportunity arise.

: You know the saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure?” Gilbert pretty much embodies that. He can't outright stop our party from being hit with ailments, but he can heavily reduce the chances with his Health song. He can also increase our party's damage as well. And he's pretty fast since he wields bows.

: Maverick is a top pick in the sense that he's the only one who has the natural ability to cure petrification. Other than that, I'm really hesitant to call him a top pick. He can heal people sure, but he's really slow at it, and if he gets taken out of commission, that screws the rest of the party over. He also has AOE status heals, but so does Fedot. On the other hand, he's the only one who can raise the dead naturally.

Offense

: Now that Pauline has the postgame bow, she can actually deal a good amount of damage now! She's fast, and her stab attacks can do a ton of damage to the bird enemies. In fact, the FOE that can inflict petrification is a bird, so she can whittle it down pretty fast. 1st Turn is also a good support ability for slow party members like Maverick.

: Being a gun user, Fedot can deal a lot of damage to the FOEs and the various kinds of birds in this part of the Stratum. He can dish out some good Stab damage, and elemental damage. He has the highest luck stat in the game, so he's unlikely to get hit by ailments. Which is a good thing since Medishot lets him cure every ailment except petrification. That said, he's pretty slow.

: Ling is probably one of the strongest physical damage dealers in the party thanks to Rampage. Unfortunately, his Loyalty passive makes him a huge glass cannon, since he'll try to tank everything, including AOEs. If the party is made out of paper, he's gonna need a lot of support just to stay alive.

: Bellamy can deliver huge amounts of single target and AOE elemental damage to enemies. That said, he needs TP support or he's gonna run dry fairly fast, especially if he has to spam his spells.

: Ken can dish out a large amount of single target Cut damage, and a decent amount of AOE Fire damage. He's also fairly evasive.

: Emilia has her chasers, but she needs a team built around her in order to function well.

Support

: Aliara's Poison is also pretty helpful here, and Dampen is a huge damage amp for, well, everyone. Her high luck also means that status effects are pretty unlikely to hit her. She can also Curse enemies, which doesn't do much unless Frederik is in the party. If he is, both she and Frederik can provide infinite TP to the party. She's both a great offensive character and a support.

: Frederik can heal the party, and make certain members be able to deal even more damage. He can also erase enemy buffs, and he's fast. Thanks to Cursecut and Transfer, he can restore the party's TP and let them last a long time in the Labyrinth. Unfortunately, that only applies if Aliara is in the party. He also can't heal status effects or revive the dead.

: Aegis can provide some physical defensive support. It's nice because some of the enemies hit hard in this part of the Stratum. He can also dispel status effects on party members, but unlike Fedot and Maverick, he only has access to single target versions.

Vote for up to three party members. Votes must be bolded.
