Ugh, got a really loud tick coming out of my TJ's 4.0. No power problems that I can tell, but it's pretty loud, and it gets worse with load. I'm thinking exhaust, as I've heard other sounds like this from other vehicles that had exhaust issues. 2000, manual transmission before people start theorizing cracked flex plate. I've got money to work on it, but I'd rather not have to tear into it in the cold. Here's a crappy cell phone video for the sound: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yPOV47xMTs

Alright, which of you guys am I going to arm twist into buying a one of a kind ZJ? http://richmond.craigslist.org/cto/4887578512.html 93 ZJ... 5 speed. But it gets rarer... ... it's got an OM617 conversion, so it's a 5 cylinder turbodiesel 5 speed 93 ZJ. Zero rust, it looks like, due to the south. I wish I could buy this and send it to my past self in 2008, because I'd still be driving that thing today. So much better than the garbage rotten 96 XJ I ended up with that triggered my slow slide into jeep fleet ownership.

Got a question for Kastein: what 4.0 head has holes for the coil rail, no casting number or TUPY stamp, and has a big DD cast just on the side of the valve cover gasket area? There's also a threaded hole tapped into the coolant jacket on the driver side of the head, at the back.

I don't know. I barely know anything about 4.0 cylinder heads aside from which stock ones will fit what motors/years.

I'm probably going to pull the intake/exhaust manifolds off tomorrow or in the next few days. It has the coil rail bosses so it's definitely past 2000, but it should have a casting code somewhere, but I don't see one. I had the valve cover off, so I didn't have anything in the way.

On the way out to the desert for the weekend, GF in tow, I noticed a sudden loss of power. Looking down, my temp gauge was suddenly pegged. Hmmm, pull frantically across two lanes to the shoulder just as the engine dies. Clouds of coolant come billowing out from under the hood. One of my replaced freeze plugs liberated itself and drained the block . I can see the little motherfucker resting down by the block temp sensor. Thankfully we were only 20 minutes from home (not in the middle of the desert), and AAA had us back an hour later. The driver was cool as poo poo though and has something like 13 classic cars he's restoring - he was very glad to chat with someone who knew what a freeze plug was. Upon further inspection at home, and judging by the moisture on the passenger side of the block it also blew the head gasket . It looks like it's time to address the valvetrain clicking that's been bothering me! Krakkles you guys have fun on Cleghorn

I have a parts jeep now. 1992 Jeep Cherokee 4.0/AW4/4wd/D35 rear Snow flake rims, The same bucket seats as in my Comanche. Here's a quick rundown of what I'm already eyeballing for swapping over: * The seats, doorcards, and dash all look in better condition. * The heating system appears complete and I'm told it even works. * The interior wiring harness is complete and I'm told everything works. * The front body panels and grille are immaculate compared to the front end damaged MJ parts. * Under the hood is everything I need for an HO 4.0 swap (if I ever get to that point) including all the bells and whistles like an electric fan). * The steering column, which is in excellent condition. My 2000 XJ drivers seat has started to shuffle loose its mortal coil as they often do. After the snow melts I'll see if it's the seat or the mount. If not easily fixable, any recommendations on aftermarket seats?

Well, just changed the RMS and put in a new oil pump and now it won't start. Primed the pump, so it had pressure. Thought the distributor might be 180 so I flipped it around and still no go. Pulled the cap and rotor and they were toast; probably just upset the minimal tolerance it was still operating on. My buddy had a spare 4.0 in the garage with a near new cap and rotor so we liberated those and still nothing, but it's throwing a code now at least. Heading off to another friend's for his code reader but was just curious if anyone had any ideas.

My RC quick disconnects arrived so I installed them. I would LOVE for a Jeep vendor to actually give me parts that don't need modification for once. I had to trim the taller spacer because somehow they didn't realize one was bigger than the other. Down: Up: My sliders are still very wrong. If I don't get a solution from JCR tomorrow I'm going to ask to return them and I'll get new ones from somewhere else.

Ugh, finally figured out what it was. The drat timing was off. Had to go to TDC, put the oil pump slot at 11 o-clock, seat the distributor back in at 1 o'clock and rotate as it dropped so the rotor ends up at 5 o'clock. So basically just guesstimating since 12-3-6-9 or some loving timing marks would be way too easy. I kept ending up at 4 or 6 o-clock until I reset TDC again and finally managed something like 5:30. Good enough. Purrs like a fuckin kitten now. Hopefully the new oil pan gasket and rear main seal means no more leaks for a while, and I won't have to worry about the oil pump anytime soon.

I think if you have a little bit of lift, no. I just dropped the pan on my XJ (~4"-5" of lift) and it's every bit identical around the steering and suspension as a TJ. Didn't come anywhere near the downpipe I don't recall. You do have to kind of snake it sideways around the starter though, but it's only a couple of bolts if you want to unbolt it it out of the way. What made it really easy was putting the frame on jacks, taking the tires off and letting the axle droop to the ground.

I think letting the axle droop would be overkill (that and I don't remember if the front springs are positively retained or will flop out).

Yeah, you should be okay then. It just makes it a little easier, particularly getting the pan back up in there for re-installation.

TJs and YJs have the axle so far forward relative to the engine that the pan should be cake. XJs/MJs are the pain in the rear end ones. The Royal Nonesuch, it may just be condensation from the monster cloud of coolant vapor you unleashed. Since you pulled over the second you saw the cloud, you're PROBABLY fine. I mean, it could have cooked, but I've seen far worse done with no HG damage on 4.0s.

When I looked after getting it home, there was a clear band of moisture directly beneath the HG at least half the length of the head. The valve cover was dry. It seemed pretty clear to me, but hopefully you're right. I slammed the hood shut angrily and stomped off to go do something else for the last couple of days, so I need to inspect further. When I replaced the expansion plugs months ago, one of the five tapped in a little easier than the rest - that's the one that gave, naturally the one buried deepest under the exhaust manifold. I'm pissed at the stupid thing, and am not super keen on replacing it again and worrying every time I leave cell reception. Options at this point, assuming the HG needs replacing: 1 - Jeep place near me sells complete pulled 4.0s with accessories for ~$350. Try to find one with non corroded plugs and lower mileage. Inherit new issues. 2 - Tear mine apart again, remove head, weld (??) expansion plugs in or some poo poo? How can I keep the little fuckers in there? Blah 3 - Go hog wild with the credit card and get one of those reman ATK 4.0s for $2k and have a basically new jeep. The Royal Nonesuch fucked around with this message at 22:02 on Mar 2, 2015 |

I went and played in the rain yesterday - me and a buddy went to Pancake Rock off I8 in Alpine. This was my first time driving in mud that counted as mud. We made it about two thirds of the way to the peak but had to turn around. There was a muddy sandstone ledge that I couldn't get over. I'm tired of not having rear traction once the front locker gets me up on stuff. It was a ton of fun, even though we only went a mile or two. I love the rain!
