For cheaper than Beam White label? Yeah, definitely go for it, even if you just use it to mix.

Jameson's is my first thought, seeing as it's cheap but not like drinking malted paint-thinner. Nothing spectacular, but a good mixer. Bushmills standard label is usually pretty sharply priced. (where I live, anyway) Haven't had a try of it recently, though.

The bargain here is The Irishman 70, which seems to be given away for NZ$40 or so. Not sure if that's standard pricing, or if it's even still available worldwide. (Google showed it at 35 pounds in the U.K)

I like Powers Gold Label. It's a decent blended Irish that you can get for around $30 a liter in Iowa. It won't knock your socks off, but I've enjoyed it every way I've had it.

I like Tullamore a lot for the price. It's decent enough for on the rocks but really is best in a mixer as it will definitely be a bit more harsh than some finer and slightly pricier products. I always keep a 1.5L of it stocked at the house (along with the same of Bulleit) just for mass consumption or a cocktail.

Jameson's is a similar price point but there is something about its taste that I cannot describe and just do not really like at all. I wish I knew what it was. As others have said, Bushmills or Powers are the only other things near that price that come to mind that are both also pretty good. To me the Red Breast would be the next obvious step up but will be 50-75% more per bottle in cost typically.

Paddy and Bushmills are a little cheaper here and I've found them tolerable.

Clontarf and Jameson made me want to die, maybe they're ok mixed.

At about the same price or more are Powers which I think I remember liking and The Irishman, how's that for original naming. I think I liked that too, and they have a single malt that is of course a bit more.

(A little more and you've got Jameson Black which actually isn't bad, then single malts and "high malt" blends like Teeling which is pretty good. And then Green Spot &etc.)

I posted about this a little ways back, but Trader Joe's currently has a good single-malt Irish whiskey for $25. It's literally an 8-year Tyrconnell aged in ex-bourbon in a TJ's bottle.

So, just getting into whiskey.. almost finished with my first bottle of the balvenie 12 and was suggested Japanese whisky. Never heard of it, or even knew it existed until a few hours ago and now I have a bottle of Nikka Coffey Grain on the way to my house. Impulse whisky purchases aren't bad.

That said, per the name, it's a grain whisky, so it's not really comparable to something like Balvenie Doublewood. If you like sweeter finished drams, then next you should go for one of Glenmorangie's "Extra Matured" line. La Santa is finished in sherry barrels (albeit for two years rather than just a few months like the Doublewood), Quinta Ruban in port barrels, and Nectar d'Or in sauternes barrels (a French dessert wine).

Every place around here that has Sazerac on their cocktail list uses a rye whiskey besides Sazerac. Sazerac Rye doesn't show up here often and sells fast when it does. I've only seen it on shelves twice in the past year.

With Dolin Rouge and an orange twist it makes a memorable Manhattan. Even better if you can get your hands on Tempus Fugit's Abbott's Bitters.

Yup, EWSB and OGD 114 are both awesome and a bottle of both together will set you back like $50. Throw in some Angel's Envy for variety and you're still under $100.

I'll never understand why people pay insane prices for bourbon.

Yamazaki 12 is good.. Yamazaki 18 is divine. To my tastes, Nikka bottlings don't hold a candle to Suntory's Yamazaki line.
