Go watch the most recent seasons of the new anime (Stardust Crusaders). They're adapting the arc that the old OVA was based off of, it's 100x more faithful to the original manga and consequently better (and the OVA still did okay with that fight, so that's really saying something) and they literally just got to the poker game fight you mentioned.

A belated thanks to those of you who pointed out some architects for me to research for my writing. The work of George Devey inspired me and was enriching to the story. It's actually pretty crazy how Devey and HH Richardson were building exactly what I wanted to evoke, even though I've never really known anything about architectural design.

are you thinking specifically of the scene where Parer keeps saying "what?" and Ripley tells him to gently caress off because that's what that makes me think of.

That scene made such a huge impression on me when I first saw the movie around 13. The tension between Kotto and Weaver is just so organic, you can feel his presence needling her and needling her and then she finally just explodes: "Are you gonna listen to me, Parker? Shut up!" That scene scared me just about as much as any other of the film's alien-related terrors.

EDIT: Speaking of Kotto, can anybody recommend me some other great roles he's been in? I really need to re-watch Bone at some point, but also finally get around to Across 110th Street.

Across 110th Street is a goddamn masterpiece, so is Nothing But a Man and Blue Collar. The Liberation of LB Jones is really good, too. Five Card Stud is pretty good and it's fun to see him in a western.

Also if at this late date you haven't watched Homicide: Life on the Street, then just... goddamn. Goddamn.

haha I get like the total opposite read out of that scene. Parker getting under Ripley's skin and making her blow up has always been funny to me (okay TBH I don't know if I got what was going on when I first watched the movie at age nine)

So I watched the first known pornographic film today. It's called A L'Ecu d'Or our la Bonne Auberge. It was made in 1908 and, like most pornographic films at that early stage, was probably produced and projected at a brothel. These sorts of films were normally destroyed in keeping with obscenity laws, so there's really no way of knowing if it's the first, but you can find it by googling the name and finding a link to xhamster for "The First Porn Movie Ever."

It's actually fairly well shot, edited, and written. It starts off in a hotel room where a maid ushers a man out while she vacuums the bed. Eventually, the maid gets distracted and begins masturbating with the vacuum. As you might expect, the man re-enters the room along with his wife (?), and they are not pleased. But all's well that ends well, because they end up stripping her clothes off and having a threesome. The movie is highly detailed about these sexual acts - there's fellatio and cunnilingus, sixty-nine with the man on top, face-sitting, penis-to-breast stimulation, and, finally, some reverse cowgirl. It was only four minutes. And, you know what, it was a nice little silent movie, too.

I'll admit that I was surprised, too, but you have to keep in mind that the availability and historicization of popular cinema has a way of perpetuating myths about the consciousness of 'old timey' people about sex. Those cheeky burlesque films are just the stuff we know about because that was what Edison and American Mutoscope & Biograph were willing to capitalize upon, and, furthermore, those are the examples of 'adult entertainment' that are safe to show on history programs and in classrooms. Actual pornography, on the other hand, have been historically and systematically destroyed. With that stuff it wasn't an issue of censorship, it was an issue of its very existence not being tolerated. But like with most illegal things that just drove people with the resources to make it 'underground.'

I would really like to get into the Kinsey Institute sex film archives at some point.
