In his defence, it's pretty easy for Lynch to demonstrate to execs why they need him to be involved first and foremost --all he has to do is tell them to actually watch the second season and compare the show to what it was like when he was there and what it was like when he was not. On the subject, I hope he sent his budget demands to them inside a giant paper mache chess piece.

Seems like we'll have to wait a while to find out what really happened here. You'd really need to know details to figure out if Lynch is just asking for the moon and refusing to accept anything less, or if Showtime is trying to poo poo out a revival show on the cheap and Lynch doesn't want to be a part of it.

I hate the taboo against naming dollar amounts. I'd really like to see between the two, who's being unreasonable here. I wouldn't figure Showtime as trying to lowball anything that's generating this much publicity already, but I also wouldn't think Lynch would need that much to make this series.

I read a couple weeks ago that the reason negotiations stalled was because Lynch was asking for a huge cut of the home video and streaming royalties. I'd believe that rather than it being over some budget issue. Just because Lynch is an artist doesn't mean he's immune to dollar signs.

He's nearly 70. He's paid his dues. The show lives and dies by him. If I were Lynch and I was seeing comparative hacks like JJ Abrams being treated like gods, I'd demand whatever the gently caress I wanted too, especially if somebody wanted me to revive something I had created previously that was well respected and loved.

Thing is, budget amounts and potential revenues mean jack poo poo to the public, because even tv production doesn't really know what's required or how things will end up. It's all educated guesswork. So unless there's a production accountant out there, I doubt number would make much sense to us.

I'm actually not surprised that one or several actors would back Lynch up, I'm just surprised Kyle Maclachlan hasn't really spoke up or said anything. I imagine Maclachlan's just taking the pragmatic and professional approach. Isn't the script by Lynch (and/or Mark Frost and whoever else) already written and they're just waiting for production to start? I think as long as they don't bring in anybody from Showtime to gently caress with the show or make changes or cuts to the writing then it should be fine. God help us if anybody involved with Dexter gets their hands on it. I really shouldn't even joke about that.

But I guess his career is solid enough it's not as big a deal for him, maybe.

I can see them trying to get David Lynch in as a consultant if this directing stuff doesn't work out. I'm honestly surprised this is having pre-production troubles. You'd think Showtime would want to get something out there to capitalize on the whole murder-mystery with character drama thing. True Detective showed that people will eat that stuff up. Twin Peaks just happens to have weirder characters, is all.

I dunno, the SAVETWINPEAKS video makes me kinda hopeful. Lynch tweeted that he called the actors individually to inform them that he is not directing, they must know a little more about whats going on than the press and wouldn't be doing something like this if the situation is irreparable.

You know... I'm just extrapolating from my own experiences a bit here (which is probably a bad idea) but Lynch strikes me as someone who (based on everything I've read) probably lives his day-to-day life with a fair amount of anxiety or perhaps a lack of confidence in his abilities. That whole Louis thing certainly came across that way. I mean, we all know Lynch is very shy and compulsive - when he was making Eraserhead I remember he was known for ordering the same thing at the same table at the same Big Boy's every day for something like 10 years straight? That's amusing but also extremely compulsive behavior; I also understand it totally because it's tremendously comforting, and Lynch is someone who always has struck me as finding comfort in the predictable banality of routine and life that he's accustomed to. I remember at one point for a few years he posted a daily video report (like a 1-minute video) of what the weather was like in L.A. where he lives. And bear in mind the weather is almost always exactly the same in that area of Southrn California, year-round, day-in and day-out. If you recall back when he had a pay website in like, the mid-00s? Those vids were one of the things behind the paywall, if I remember correctly. And there were hundreds and hundreds of them. David Lynch in front of a webcam in the same place every time, sometimes smoking a cigarette or drinking coffee, "Uh.. today is April the eighth, two-thousand-fifteen. Weather outside is... Nice! Some clouds to the west. Lovely sunshine to the east. 74 degrees out." And that's it. Actually, here's a random one; he uploaded a bunch to youtube once but took them down I think. Imagine literally a thousand variations on this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0yGes5wBSY

I wonder if all the interior set pieces for Twin Peaks still exist, or if any of the outdoor locations have become unrecognizable over the years. I could see Lynch demanding perfect clones of each set being reconstructed, down to relatively minor settings.
