Probably been mentioned before, but in GTA V the characters tend to go through dialogue when you're driving to a mission or whatever. If you crash, it will cut off the dialogue, but once you've got your bearings it picks right up from the same sentence that was cut off. No missed dialogue, no unnecessary redundancy.

They also have a few different variations of the same dialogue, so if you gently caress up the mission and restart they'll tell the same basic conversation with different anecdotes, jokes, or at least different phrasing on the same instructions.

They had that in GTA IV already, it was pretty cool. I think after all the variations had played you'd just drive in silence if you had to retry again. If I'm not mistaken they even put in some "let's just drive, Niko" lines for those events.

I gotta wonder what sound engine they're using, does anyone know? Is it custom, or middleware like Wwise? I've wondered how they keep track of EVERYTHING audio-related, like how all of the music tracks will sort of 'keep playing' the background. Switching away from Radio Ga-ga (why would you?!) for 10 seconds and going back, you'll be 10 seconds later in the song. I've worked in FMOD a bit, and I know that keeping track of all of those radio stations, constantly, is quite the process.

In GTA 4 they didn't really stop talking if you crashed or started shooting though. I remember picking up one of my dates in a stolen police helicopter and proceeding to fly around blowing up cars while she told me about her day. After blowing up a few dozen police copters she asked me if I was involved with organized crime. I flew up as high as I could and bailed out and followed. After I landed safely I found her body lying limp in the middle of the street. About 20 minutes later I got a text from her asking me to pick her up at the hospital.

One great little thing about GTA 4 was typing "child porn" into the search browser at the Tw@ Internet Cafe. You would get an instant 5 star wanted rating and the cops would show up almost instantly and blow you away.

Apparently at one point each radio station was a single long sound file that kept playing at all times, and tuning the radio just turned the volume up on the one you were going to and down on the one you left. Not sure if that's true now though.

Eventually. When I fist got down there the werewolves wouldn't stagger or even make any indication they were feeling my attacks so I just panicked and scrambled past them all. Then I got the shortcut, leveled up a bit, and it became way easier. I'm still not sure what changed for when I finished BSB. I just kept getting obliterated and then one run everything lined up just right.

This still blows me away. Yes, mp3's (or ogg files, which are like the free-range mp3 alternative) are small files, but when being played, they're uncompressed to their full PCM file size. I'm just blown away by the audio magic that Rockstar seems to be constantly wielding.

Well, the whole file probably isn't uncompressed at once, no, but if you've got like.... 5-6 audio streams happening simultaneously, that can get crazy, even if it's only loading 5-10 seconds chunks into ram at once.

Didn't the PS2 era GTA games take advantage of the fact that all PS2s had a whole PSX on a chip inside them? I seem to recall that those games used all of that vestigial PSX's computing capacity to handle their audio processing.

I could be completely wrong, though.

Replaying Human Revolution, I just noticed that if you alert one member of a pair of guards, they'll both move to where you were seen, but only the one who saw you has their gun out. The other guy just lazily follows him, telling him it was nothing. There's a few variations of it too, which is pretty impressive for a situation I only encountered on my third playthrough.

That's the PS3 and PS2 backwards-compatibility. There are actually a bunch of PS1 games incompatible with the PS2 Slim though.

If you have the actual PS2 discs it's trivial to convert them to MP3s, too.

My favorite little thing about Tales of the Abyss is this mini-arc the main character has regarding Killing People. I haven't played it in years so I may have the details wrong, but as I remember it:

You're captured by an enemy army and have to fight their soldiers to escape. Despite the fact that before this section starts you've probably Killed dozens of People in random encounters your character starts having a nervous breakdown because he can't bring himself to Kill People. The rest of your team, a bunch of battle hardened manslayers with a median age of something like 16, constantly treat him like poo poo for the duration the arc over his fear of Killing People. When he finally saves the day by cutting down some nameless soldier in the nick of time the resulting conversation reads like a pamphlet on puberty given to 10 year olds.

Protagonist: I was so nervous and ashamed to Kill a Person, but when I did, it just felt right.
Big Sister Figure: That's right, everyone starts Killing People as they grow up.
Gynophobic Butler: I mean, yeah, I've Killed a few People in my day :blush:
Smarmy Mage: I've Killed so many People that they call me the Butcher of Badical :wink:
10 Year Old Girl: I love Killing People! I Killed five People this morning :peanut:
Big Sister Figure: See? Killing People is a completely normal part of being an adult. Why, when we first met I was trying to kill you!

Do any of the Tales games have a likeable cast? I'm burning through Hearts R when my 3DS battery dies after several hours of delays at the airport (NOT THAT I'M BITTER OR ANYTHING) and good god it's like they tried to make the worst characters possible. The other ones I've played are Symphonia and Xillia and they're both pretty similar although not to the level of Hearts R.

Actually, I take that back, the main characters Kor, Hisui and Kohaku are unbearably bad as is that dumb painter girl, but the old man and the wandering merchant lady who are clearly fed up with their poo poo are okay I guess.

The battle system is great, though.

I'd say that the games have good characters but never manage to have an entire group of characters that're all great. Maybe. I've played Symphonia and Vesperia and read the LP of Abyss so I can't comment on too many of them though.

Something from a few pages ago that'll fit here: I read recently that the folks at Black Mesa are going to be updating the game at some point, and part of it will be retuning the marine's reaction times and the jumps. Not sure where I read this, of course, but at least it sounds good. :unsmith:

EDIT: I can't really decide what to really cite, but Subnautica is an early-access survival game set underwater that is just robust enough that a lot of whats in it fits the bill for Little Things that are awesome. One thing I really love is the wonderfully designed creatures you'll see during your explorations. Most are inherently passive to you, giving you a strong sense that you're the alien to this world.

gently caress it, I'll add another thing: early in the game you'll find a harmless pink/purple airbag of a creature called a Floater. Generally, your interaction with Floaters is collecting and attaching them to small boulders to reveal caves. 95% of Subnautica is underwater, except for a small island. Seems normal until you swim underneath it, and see big daddy Floaters keeping the island afloat.

GTA 5 on the PC has a new Director mode.

It allows you to be and character or NPC from the game, and you can record gameplay then edit it from alternate camera angles or even with a free camera. Add your own soundtrack and music, filters and all that good stuff, then export directly to youtube.

Bonus: Director mode also lets you control time of day, weather and gives you a bunch of literal cheats via an ingame menu (god mode, no wanted level, moon gravity etc) and removes money and gives you unlimited ammo.

The result is a sandbox mode where you can go absolutely crazy and not worry about your cash being lost due to deaths/arrests, and look like anyone you want to.

Oh, yeah, I remember burning them to 2 CDs and listening to them on the walk to and from school, most of them were just 12 minutes long but Chatterbox was an hour and the funniest thing of all time to 14 year old me. I could probably recite most of it from memory.

Yeah, it's super old, but the art, battle system and somewhat generic story holds up. I played through the snes version several times in my life and I really enjoyed it. I did not enjoy any of the updated versions since they cocked up the art and a lot of the mechanics but eh.

Is it generic? Maybe it is now, but I believe it was ever notable for being a really early attack on the "destroy the sealed dark lord" plot when it was generic. Me, I feel like the original version fails to hold up and the only good one is the PSP one for being properly real-time.

My favorite little thing in Tales of Phantasia is the puzzle that requires you to take advantage of one of the party members being an actual witch on a flying broom to have her bypass part of a dungeon.
