Dj Meow Mix posted:No one unironically says yomi, I think No, I think there's an entire area of specialist vocabulary in fighting games that's specifically the province of A) David Sirlin and B) people who think Sirlin sounds smart. Sirlin's got some decent game design chops--I've heard his card game is actually really fun, though I haven't played it myself--but I could've done without his rear end coining new terminology to discuss fighter balance. It's like how people who don't know what it is will talk about the "metagame" to sound intelligent. (Also, I think we've gotta put a fair amount of fighting-game slang squarely on Yipes's head, but I'm prepared to live with that. Dude's just a meme fountain.)

Goro's Stomp OP, just had a Subzero try to zone me out and I switched to ground pounding and stomping and got some mad salt in return. For those of you who don't know how to deal the Goro's stomp, as soon as he leaves the screen going up dash or run forward. It's that easy.

People do say oki and abare despite there being viable English alternatives for those concepts, though. Don't worry about it, the FGC adopting Japanese terms has always been pretty arbitrary. Wakeup pressure can be okizeme, but safe jumps aren't sagikasane and corner pressure isn't gamenhashi. Crossups aren't mekuri but converting can be abare. And so and so forth.

Can you do brutalities without unlocking them in the Krypt? I was messing around with Mileena last night and could not get her dropkick brutality to trigger for the life of me, but as soon as I got it in the krypt it I hit it first try.

It's just so counterinuitive to me to be smashing the the special when you're still nowhere near done the other combo. Yeah, I didn't like this about MK9 and Injustice. It's super counter-intuitive that you have to enter the inputs before there's anything even resembling a cancel window on the screen. Other fighting games run their combo systems on a basis of "the character is now doing the move you have to cancel from > do the input before the move's animation gets to a certain point". Playing NRS games is like entering code into the controller three seconds before anything happens.

I'm a scrub. Ermacs "We Win" Brutality says I just have to at some point during the match do a 5+ hit combo that ENDS with a D,B,Square (force lift or whatever) to 'enable' it, and then end the match with a D,B,Square. Can someone spoon feed me a reliable Ermac combo that can end with a force lift for me to try when I get home?

KOMI posted:I'm a scrub. I haven't tried this specific one, but you can force-lift after a force-lift to smack them down. So you should be able to do say a 222 into lift then lift again while they're hanging there for a fairly easy five hitter. Edit: Just checked, in anything but Mystic, force lift is an automatic two hitter anyway. So if you're not Mystic, do a 222 > Force-lift, and you get a five hitter right away. I've played Tekken for ages but always considered it a term that was mostly restricted to that community (and, y'know, Japan) but now people use it everywhere. Tekken's wakeup game is a lot harder and more complicated than most other FGs though, so it ends up being useful for shorthand.

You have to be holding block and forward while they're comboing you. I think back in MK9 you just had to press it, which was a lot easier. I came from SF and I have a good amount of time into that (1k hours I think?) and it's a TOTALLY different game coming into MK10. For the life of me I CAN NOT get grappling down.

Oki as a term is useful as shorthand for "poo poo you do after you get a knockdown on someone". It's replaceable but it's not yomi, at least. I always thought it was more of a GG/airdasher thing, tho.

When you played Injustice with your bros you'd just hang out in this room with a little sidebar saying who was in there and everyone would watch the one fight that was happening. Did that mode return, and what is it called in MKX? So far the rooms in this game are just 'smaller matchmaking pools'

Finally got my PC up and running after this game fried my old video card, kind of bummed that there is still noticeable frame droppage on the stages with rain (great optimization imo). But other than that, game completely playable. Just played like 20 rounds against somebody online, felt pretty good. He had 34% meterless Katana combos so good on him.

Wanderer posted:Hardcore fighting-game fans, maybe. The genre is just fine, and in fact might be healthier than it's ever been. Well, I'd say that mid-era SF2 (along with Early MK etc) is the healthiest it's been just because of the sheer ubiquity. I mean consider how many people haven't really played fighting games since then but know who "Guile" is, if they're anywhere from 20-45 years old. And Evo has been pretty consistently growing, overall, for years. So I wouldn't say that is a basis to say the FGC is dying. Streams are a luxury earlier generations of fighitng games never had and it's helped them a lot. Sure they're less popular than, say. League of Legends, but what isn't? I'm not sure what facts the good Senator is using for the basis of his comments, and I'm curious where his knowledge of the 'community' comes from, since I have no idea how involved he's ever been with it.

If you want to challenge yourself a little bit, do f21d2 -> j3 xx Teleport -> 222 xx Forcelift. The timing can be a little strict, but it's actually the most damaging starter I've found so far.
