I saw Exodus and Testament last night. It owned pretty hard even though Testament's mix was really muddy and awful.

Sabaton continues to put on one of the best live acts I've ever seen, fantastic performance and tight audio. How these guys aren't major yet continues to befuddle me.

Nightwish was underwhelming at best, they had the drat amps so loud that I could barely make out the vocals through the distortion. Such a loving waste of a century old opera hall, The Islander shone like a gem because they had the amps and bass almost turned off.

Oh it was pretty funny, they got a far more intense welcome than Nightwish. The crowd was chanting Sabaton for a good three minutes at one point.

I fully expect they'll be headlining instead of supporting the next time they come to town, and they deserve it. Their days of doing 400 capacity venues are done.

I went to this over the weekend. Grave Upheaval are excellent, Temple Nightside are very good, Impetuous Ritual put on a good show even though I don't like their music so much, and Sinistrous Diabolus are the heaviest live band I've ever seen. Vesicant are also a band to keep an eye on if you're at all into black/death, their new material sounded very promising.

Not really, Impetuous Ritual have much more song structure, Grave Upheaval are almost ambient at times with the drums being more of a driving force than the guitars.

I donno man, I think I like the latter better.

This video is awesome, from the torch-bearer descending to meet a wizard and get a scroll to the singer looking like Rob Halford-meets-Village-People with a dash of Freddy Mercury to the random Malmsteen-esque solo, even if the whole thing is basically a Dio riff drenched in keyboards with a Soviet take on the thing Winger did with a keyboard player grabbing a guitar occasionally.

The random vIolent Ukraninan thrash I've come across just sounds like another take on Pantera's Primal Concrete Sledge.

Did Sinistrous Diabolos say anything about the new album? I got the impression around New Years that he was just going to release it on bandcamp within a couple of days and be done with it, but that obviously hasn't been the case...

No mention, he posted on facebook that he might have a few rough copies in tape form at the gig, but they weren't on the merch table or anything so I'm assuming they were probably just for close friends of his. It'll turn up at some point I guess.

What the best production is depends on what the band's going for in terms of aesthetic and atmosphere. If a band wants to portray a futuristic atmosphere, a very clinical production job like that of, say, Nothingface is good. I do agree that brickwalling should always be avoided though.

The drums are actually one of the standout things for me. They're clear as hell and there's lots of seperation and space between each piece of kit so it really makes things feel vast.

I'm a fan of the production on Helloween's Master of the Rings. It's very clear and crisp with great definition, and the drums have just the right amount of punch to them. Fits the material perfectly.

Bad tones seem to be really common in prog/tech type metal bands for whatever reason. I mean I don't care for that stuff much in any case but you don't have to have a tone that sounds like that guys, come on now.

Old Helloween has a very special place in my heart since it's what got me into metal in the first place, but none of their stuff after The Dark Ride has really grabbed my attention, sadly. There have been some good songs here and there, but with any given album I've felt like listening to it at most a handful of times before getting bored.

But this new song is actually surprisingly good. :) The production is pretty muddy compared to Master of the Rings, but so it has been ever since The Time of the Oath, tbh. If the rest of the album is as entertaining as this song it'll be their best one after The Dark Ride.
I'm also glad they still haven't gotten rid of their cartoon pumpkin schtick. :3:

Also, despite the muddy production, The Time of the Oath is still just as great an album as Master of the Rings.
