I'm moving to the mountains of western North Carolina to do R&D for one of the largest OEM and aftermarket turbocharger manufacturers (hope I'm not saying too much, people are usually really vague about jobs here). I co-oped there for a little over a year in a similar position and worked my butt off which definitely helped ease the interviewing process. I can easily trace all of this back to buying a clapped out and half disassembled Opel when I was 15 and posting about it here. In short that car has been a fantastic practical resume to back up my academics and was why I got (and even heard about) the co-op in the first place.

Tough weekend for me, even though it was nice celebrating mother's day with my wife for the first time after having the baby a few months ago.

I don't have a big family but I've been trying to spend more time and talking to my cousins more since our family doesn't really do get togethers after my grandparents passed a few years ago.

Anyway, about 6 weeks ago I called up my cousin (who's about 28) and wanted to see if he wanted to get lunch. He's never really managed to move out from his parents place and doesn't really have anything like a career or a job outside of foodservice.

Lunch went well but he told me that he had been in rehab 4 years prior for oxy abuse, something I had no idea about--his family had concealed it from the rest of the family. I told him I'd look for some jobs at my work and send them his way.

About a month ago, his parents sold their house and moved about 80 miles away and I assumed he didn't move out and moved with them, so I kept trying to contact him via text to see how things are going. Didn't hear anything for weeks so I reached out to his parents and they said he had broken his phone. Ok, that makes sense so I let it go.

He called me Saturday night and explains what's going on--he's living out of his car and crashing at people's houses because his parents arent letting him live at home any more because he had only told me part of the truth about rehab, he only told me about his first visit.

He's addicted to heroin. :(

He has just checked himself out of the 4th time in rehab. His parents had sent him to a place that costs 1200 dollars a day and he felt bad about the money being spent on him, on something he ultimately doesn't really want to get clean from yet.

Its been really hard to hear all of this, and only to imagine how much pain his parents must have been going through and how hard it has been for them to deal with it while concealing it from my entire side of the family.

He's stealing and fencing stuff to feed his addiction and while very cognizant of how dangerous this habit is, doesnt seem to have hit rock bottom enough to want to change. It's heartbreaking because he's so similar to me (smart but somewhat awkward, nice guy and decent looking) but never really got motivated and moving on his own path after finishing high school.

Went to the gastroenterologist today. They really want to do an endoscopy to see why I keep getting heartburn and acid reflux.

It's a $700 procedure and doesn't sound at all like fun. It requires sedation and everything.

I've also started going to the gym, eating healthier and taking probiotics, so I'm thinking if those do the trick, I'll cancel my endoscopy appointment.

There may be more to it than that. If your lifestyle change doesn't have a measurable effect (start marking days when you have reflux on the calendar, and then calculate if the rate is increasing or decreasing after a few months) get the procedure done.

That would be just fine. These are all fully guided trips, though the Chattooga section IV is mostly class 3-4 with a couple of 5s in there, so as long as you're in good shape, a strong swimmer, and can listen to directions from the guide, it'll all be cool.

Endoscopy isn't bad as far as outpatient procedures go and if it figures out wtf is going on it's worth it. Hopefully the lifestyle change will clear things up though. As CommieGIR mentioned keep a very detailed food, symptoms log and you'll eventually be able to figure out things to avoid.

Oh god the radioactive milkshake...eww.

Depending on which end they're going through (I think) you can be awake during an endoscopy. I was having them once a week after the transplant and stayed awake during a few at the end to watch. Pretty cool poo poo.

Me @ your poasting

Continuing the gently caress 2015 pain train, I had the worst weekend of my life.

My dad went missing from his home either late Friday night or early Saturday morning. Got into his ute and disappeared. His mobile phone wasn't connected, and no one had a clue where he was going, as he been a home body since he has retired. He has short term memory issues and is due for a dementia test at the end of this month.

Reported his situation to the local police on Saturday morning, who were pretty good considering he had not been missing for long.

Got a call just after midnight on Sunday morning, he was found alive and well in a country town. The local police in that town had him at their station, they had given him some chocolate cake and a cup of tea.

So I drove to the town and grabbed him, and drove back in the worst weather I have come across, pitch black, heavy rain (to the point of rivers streaming across the road) and high winds. Managed to get dad home in one piece.

Then had to go back down later on Sunday morning to grab his ute. Thankfully a cousin and her husband gave me a lift to the town to grab it. However the speedo on the ute was buggered. So when the ute showed 80 km/h, it was actually doing 60. So here I was doing 140km/h in a 2003 Hilux on a freeway...

This ruined my plans for Mothers Day with my mum, and means I will need to get dad's home care reassessed as it is obvious he isn't eating properly (he has lost a ton of weight) and the kitchen is a complete mess. Having home care coming around once a week isn't enough.

So, yeah.
