There's a guy in my class this week who was quoting from some old Maddox posts. I asked him if he had stairs in his house, and he looked at me like I had sprouted a second head. Oh well, hope springs eternal...

I just arrived in Guangzhou. This is a really nice setup here. Looking forward to finally doing the job I was hired for (after three more weeks of at-post training.)

I know of one goon due in Guangzhou in a month or two. Anyone else at The World's Best Consular Section? 3000 NIV interviews a day won't conduct themselves.

The Socialist Workers Party's newspaper proved to be a tough sell to downtown businessmen.
I'm thinking of changing careers from web/mobile development to the Foreign Service, and I scored well enough on the "here's a sample test to estimate how well you'd do on the real FSOT" that I'm confident taking the FSOT in October. I have a couple questions about money type stuff.

Given the pay chart, even the highest step/grade combination my education level qualifies me for would be a salary decrease, but I don't think those figures include any kind of adjustment for regional COL, overseas/hazard/whatever pay. What kinds of adjustments are there, and how reasonable is it that one's first posting would qualify for them?

Are there any advantages for being married or for being single?

Are FSOs prohibited from doing consulting work (for US clients, in a field other than international affairs) on their own time? Is this something that I will need/want to talk to a lawyer about if I get to a decision point?

What's it like in terms of quarters? Does State pay for housing overseas, how does that work?

Obviously it's a long road from "maybe I'd like this, why not take the test?" to having to make a decision, and it might not happen at all, but I'd like to get an idea of what to expect financially.

Is there someone I could PM or IRC or skype or whatever and talk about questions I have about my career/education decisions and ideas? Because I've posted here and there in this thread, the US gov jobs thread, and the various education threads on SomethingAwful and that, combined with graduation and a few other things is making me increasingly nervous about whether or not my current plans are anything close to good ideas or not. I'm starting to feel kind of at a loss of what to do and I'm just really uncertain about my job prospects, even.

Edit: I've posted this request in this thread because I'm interested in a career in some place like the State Department, and I thought that this would be the best place to look for someone in this field.

I'm definitely on the less-experienced side, but I did my MA and a good deal of entry-level think tanking in DC. Currently an FSO two weeks out from my first post.

Shoot me a PM - always happy to talk shop.

There's also a foreign service page on reddit. The info isn't as good as here, but it can be more active. It's also easier to PM if you're looking for that.

State matches salary up to a certain level. I think it's around 90k. Your first posting is more likely to qualify for hardship because you're probably not going somewhere nice. Danger is unlikely because they don't send Newby to a war zone. COL depends where you're going.

Are there any advantages for being married or for being single?

Somebody to vent to and a little extra COLA, plus a bedroom or two more in your posh housing with rusty colored water and cobras in the yard.

Are FSOs prohibited from doing consulting work (for US clients, in a field other than international affairs) on their own time? Is this something that I will need/want to talk to a lawyer about if I get to a decision point?

You're prohibited. No need to consult with anybody.

What's it like in terms of quarters? Does State pay for housing overseas, how does that work?

They provide it. They move you in. You just churn out the visas, baby.

Obviously it's a long road from "maybe I'd like this, why not take the test?" to having to make a decision, and it might not happen at all, but I'd like to get an idea of what to expect financially.

It's worth noting that even if they can't match your previous salary exactly, almost everything you make is disposable when you're overseas because State wraps you up tight in its big strong arms and coddles you like a baby, covering everything but dental for some dumb reason.

-e- Also, OP is updated with new assignments, but check to see if you are missing because you're newer (i.e. joined in the past couple years since I left State). Also, it's been quite a while since I updated the substantive text of the OP. I figure a lot of it is probably still accurate, but it's getting time for an overhaul. A close buddy of mine grabbed a pol/econ EL position there last summer and is certainly getting the full AF/W...experience. I think he enjoys the work, but Lagos has certainly been rough outside that, especially for his wife. That said, with 40% equity he got his number 1 bid on his 2nd tour so there's that to look forward to. I can put you in touch if your interested.

Also, good news, got a meritorious honor award, not even a year into post, woop woop! Bad news, I missed the award ceremony because HR mistakenly didn't inform me!
