Okay, you know what? I've gone and edited the Cast of Characters page to add in all the union names, right below the "Str / Int" field.

The bad news is that's pretty much ALL that I've been able to get done on the LP this week, so don't expect a second update. I can't even tell you if the next one will be a long single update, or if it'll be long enough to be two updates (but probably the latter, given past trends).

Sorry I've been busy, I'll try and have an update ready for you tomorrow. I think I'm kinda in the "fatigue" stretch that comes with many LP's. Some of the cooler moments are now past, but it's a long way to the end. I'll try and get through it.

I never noticed that either, actually. I've added a comment pointing that out in the Fornstrand update (giving you credit for noticing).

Onmi posted:

Yeah, one thing I've been omitting is that each unit has a "flag" associated with them. Why? I don't know, it serves no real purpose, it's just another world-building detail the developers added to the game just because they could. There's a lot of love in the game. Maybe I'll make a compilation of the images later on once I get more party members.

Rush and Irina's flag is the emblem of the Sykes family, naturally. Jager's flag is that of the Third Committee. Violet has the Gilles-Barre flag. Nora has the flag of The Ladies of Bloody Alice. Caedmon has the Silver Falcons flag. The Athlumians each variations on a theme - they all have a white Valeria Heart on a field of color, and two white lines separating the central field from the right and left fields. Some people who don't have a specific organization like Loki just use a guild flag with the colors of the city in which they were recruited from.

It's just a lot of world-building, but that the developers did that is really great.

We were but a mere vigilante group

Music: The Seat of Vulcan

Lately, the big man, Lord Priam, seems to've come down with something... The usual medicines and potions ain't working, neither. All of us miners've been doing our best to figure out how to get him better.

High-Spirited Miner: You heard about Lord Priam's sickness, right?
Yeah.
High-Spirited Miner: We been meetin' to talk 'bout it every night in the pub after work. There's gotta be somethin' we can do to get him well again... Th' whole thin's just crazy, yanno? Lord Priam's the healthiest guy in Royotia. He ain't never been sick before, not once. Too bad all we've figured out so far is a whole night of drinkin' packs a punch to your paycheck!

I contemplated not showing any of the town conversations to hide this information, but I decided it was rather pointless since the next quest on our list actually requires us to talk to Lord Priam.

Yeah.
Admiring Man: It's only a rumor I picked up from the merchants, but the rulers of other lands have been struck by similar illnesses.
It seems likely that this is related to why they were unable to attend the Congress.
Admiring Man: Such a thing is completely unheard of... and crosses the line from mysterious to suspicious. Where are you from, son? Is not your ruler suffering as well?

What yama?
Alright, then... Let me continue from last time. Why is it that I, a former general of the Celapaleian army, am now scuttling about, on the run...?
You are? I mean, I dunno, why?
It's due to the secrets I now...secrets about my lord, Duke Qubine. Let me tell you, life as a fugitive is not the fun that it seems. But of late, I've been impressed by how long I've been able to run, if I may say so myself. I mean, the search for me is a direct order from Duke Qubine. It is something to catch the attention of the majority of Celapaleis' army. Ho ho ho! Didn't expect that, now did you!
Uh, no…
Hwha-? Rush - did you see that?
See what?
Just now, over there, on that wagon! That qsiti looks mighty suspicious!
What qsiti?
No now - who knows who is watching us? No...I had best not say anything further. Go, get away...you don't know me.

Passionate Miner: An’ that’s the story!
Bartender: Harumph harrumph… harrumph! This General Torgal… you too, are my rival! …If only you knew I existed.
Passionate Miner: Whatever you say, boss.
*sigh*

I heard from Lord Paris that you had defeated the bird of evil, Vespalia, once and for all. I never would have thought that the legend was real... The only reason Royotia still stands today is due to you. I speak for the entire town when I say you have our thanks.

Pub Regular: It's real hard to believe, though - he's always been healthiest than even us miners. He ain't the type to get sick, 'specially not bad as this. It's damned frustrating... Alls we can do is try and dig up some expensive ore, and try and hire a healer from abroad.

Woah, is that a Sovani with Glass Armor? He looks important.

Allan. We have not talked in 80 years, and that is how you greet me?
It has only been 80 years. You have gotten too used to the mitra way. 80 years is but a mere minute for us, fool.
You've always grown hostile when you needed to ask a favor. What is it?
Hah! I would never ask you for anything. A group of armed soldiers has appeared, calling themselves the Steel Syndicate. They need to be disposed of. Now. I assumed you would want to tag along.
I see. Most certainly something must be done about them. Rush, will you lend a hand?"
Of course!
I appreciate it.
Hmph! Asking a mitra for help... I'll be waiting at the Gaslin Caves.

Accepted quest: The Successor

- Quest Video: The Successor

Music: Into the Depths

The title card for this quest is different than the standard one, and that is significant.

Justice? Is that what you call it? You're nothing but a bunch of fools.
Though your intentions may be good, we must force you to disband.
You're Torgal, one of the Four Generals of Athlum. This is perfect. With all the meaningless wars Athlum keeps waging I can't think of a better enemy of destroy! Let's go, men! We're off to destroy that enemy of justice, Athlum!
We must crush them before they reach Athlum. Ignore the weaklings. Come on!

A guest union has joined the party.

This Allan guy wants help destroying the Steel Syndicate. We have to catch them in the Gaslin Caves before they make it to Athlum!

This is a clever mission. We’re in the Ravine of Temptation at the Royotia end, and have to catch up to the enemies along the long, winding path before they reach the Athlum end. There are lots of enemies in the way to provide interference as well, like those flies who are moving in a pattern across the path.

The Steel Syndicate members are too fast for us to catch up with normally, so we need to use Timeshift.

Unfortunately, even starting the timeshift right away, you can only catch up to two of them, not all three before the timer runs out. That’s perfectly valid, it’ll work just fine, but I want to catch all three at once to make the fight harder and more interesting. So I exploit another timeshift mechanic.

I’ll fight this lone Nussknacker right now.

Strike at their flank!

Allan is voiced by Liam O’Brien, who I’m sure several of you have heard of. Allan fights in the Dual Power Grip style.

class changed to Mysticknight!
learned Nimble Resonance Edge II!

Once a fight ends, you always get a full Timeshift bar back. And now we’re closer to them.

Just barely enough time left on the bar.

Music: Beat the Odds

We’ll want to get the morale on our side as usual, the boss hits pretty hard. Because it’s his quest, Torgal is in charge of his union.

The lesser members aren’t as dangerous, but they still have substantial HP.

Hang in there, okay?
That wasn’t necessary.

These status effects would be more useful if Rush’s union went first, because status effects tend to wear off on tough enemies at the end of a turn, so when Rush uses them after the enemy has already gone, it does nothing but damage.

Irina and Gaou heal Allan with some Lotions.

This is a twirl into a double strike on the same spot.

Allan knows some Explosives arts.

One down.

Sure, let’s use this.

What’s this?!
Those guys must be pretty frickin’ weak.

This one’ll leave a mark!

1320 damage is pretty significant for a basic normal attack.

Music: Turn the Tide

Yeah! This is our big chance!

Rush and David will have to close in this turn before they can join in the fight.

The good news is that we can continue to flank.

The fight might actually end before Rush gets in an attack.

D-drat, you’re strong…
You bring shame to the Syndicate.

You half-wit! You mitra are all feebleminded.

It is not a means to justify your thoughtlessness and brutal acts of violence. I can’t stand by and watch idiots ruin its name.
W-wait, what do you mean? A-are you…? Are you!?
It belongs to us and we’re taking it back.

The guest union has left the party.

Why? What’s the deal with the Steel Syndicate?
Before Athlum was ruled by David, Torgal was taken in as a general to commend his contribution for maintaining public order and peace. But I believed that we could bring peace to the whole world, not just Athlum. The Steel Syndicate grew, but gained nothing but useless soldiers in it for the fame. And now they’ve become an uncontrollable group of violent warriors slaying everything in sight, justifying it by throwing around the word "justice." Torgal forcefully disbanded the organization, but its soul lives on. To the triflingly short-lived mitra, 50 years is enough for ideology to become legend—to become convention. My duty is to destroy it all.
There are also realist organizations like the Silver Falcons. Race makes no difference in this matter.
But don't forget—the leader of the Silver Falcons is a sovani.
Organizations change with time. Who knows what the Silver Falcons will become? Sovani live longer. That's all.
You were always a strange one. The sovani way is to not care about others.
I could say the same to you.
Hmph. I merely like the taste of blood. I have no interest in political matters. But I suppose I owe you. If you ever need anything, come to the guild.

Obtained Force Field! You’ve unlocked a more powerful version of an existing formation!
Completed quest: The Successor

Torgal and Allan are bummed that some people believe violence is good. Allan left to continue his journey for truth.

So let’s pick Allan up and add him to our merry band.

Allan

Once ran the Steel Syndicate with Torgal, but objects to its current actions. Becomes quite nasty when he needs to ask a favor.
(Voiced by: Liam O’Brien)

Class: Deathknight
Initial BR: BR 41
HP: (653)
Str / Int: (54 / 22)
Union Name: Allan’s Tribe

Current Arts
  • Dual Power Grip: (Fury Blow III, Bonecrusher II, Twin Gimlet)
  • Invocations: (Spark III, Wind Shear II, Double Time II, Caustic Blast)
  • Explosives: (Flash Bomb, Poison Bomb)
  • Traps: (Stun Trap III, Land Mine II, Retreat Flare)
Future Arts
  • Hexes @ BR 50
  • Shards @ BR 66
  • Arcana: Blackout

Comments
Allan starts with an impressive array of known arts. His high strength makes him more suited for melee combat, despite knowing Invocations very well, and getting Hexes. He also gets a bunch of Item Arts. He’s recruitable after completing his quest.

Tags: Versatile, Combat, Mystic, Items, Arcana

Allan doesn’t wow me. He’s versatile, but not really in any way which is useful. Explosives and Traps aren’t great, and while he gets a two types of Mystic arts, his INT is terrible. Torgal started out about even in INT and STR. Caedmon had higher STR, but his INT was only 10 less. Allan’s INT is lower than Caedmon’s starting INT, and even Torgal’s starting INT, in fact – and Torgal started out at BR 5. That’s how worthless Allan is as a caster.

Also, now that we have completed Emma/Emmy, Pagus, Blocter, and Torgal’s quests, it opens up the Louise’s Secrets shop in Athlum. We’ll check in there at some point when I remember.

Quest: The Successor

You can decline Torgal’s quest, but it’s not that interesting.

I see. Most certainly something must be done about them. Rush, will you lend a hand?
Nah, not right now.
Hmph.
How the mighty have fallen, Torgal. I'd think that you of all people would know that mitra are selfish and cannot be trusted.

He only gets Blackout as far as the Wiki says, and a lot of guys can get Blackout. I've got three more party members sitting on Spark IV who can learn Blackout once they hit Spark V.

And as I noticed, Allan's starting INT is worse than Torgal's, and Allan starts out with +36 BR on Torgal. Plus, while Arcanas are nice, there are leaders who have unique arts and may also be able to learn Arcanas.

To think we were all played so easily… -OR- Love Will Rise Again, Part 1

Previously On:

Chapter XV: Even now, I don’t like to go to the bathroom alone

Mojcado Castle… It’s an ancient castle left to ruin. Now it’s only home to legions of monsters and beasts. Why in the world would she select such a dangerous place to meet? No matter how I try, I cannot make heads or tails of the decision? Nevertheless, I will go.

Thank you, Rush. Words cannot fully convey my gratitude. … But, dearest Charlotte, why did you decide to meet in such a perilous location in the first place? Though thanks to me requesting Rush’s help, we were able to rescue you…
What do you mean? Paris, you were the one who decided the meeting place. You wrote me not a fortnight back.
What!? I never wrote such a letter.

Chapter XXV: You owe me a corpse, rear end in a top hat!

It's an important hub on the way from the mining city of Royotia. Pretty much all goods going from Royotia pass through Balterossa. From there, they go on to Elysion, then all over the continent. After all that, by the time they make it all the way here to Athlum, goods from Royotia have a pretty heavy markup. So, we've started talks for making a trade route from Balterossa straight to Athlum.

Chapter XXVI: My heart was the only casualty

More girlfriend troubles, right?
East of Balterossa, deep below the Great Sand Sea, lives a very kind old seer. Charlotte and I would appreciate it if you would escort us to him.
No prob!
I hate to involve you in our personal intrigues yet again, but you have my gratitude. Our parents refuse to acknowledge our love. Throughout the time we've been kept apart, we've communicated in secret. But now...we are tired of all this cloak-and-dagger - keeping our true feelings in the shadows, as if we are shamed by such a thing! We've decided to elope. The seer has agreed to keep us for a short time. Afterwards, we'll flee to some place far, somewhere we may be together.

Who's there?
By ridding the world of the two of you, our organization will be able to spread joy to many, many people.

Augh!

Hmph. There is no need for me to explain. All I'll have to explain is how I found the two of you - victims of lovers' suicide!

Yes, I'm fine. Paris...I'm sorry, I can't do this. I tried, but...I need to be at Mother's side.
Why? You believe that the times we spent together, the feelings we shared were nothing more than illusions created by the seer?

I just - I can't...
I... I see... ...It's alright. I knew that someday, we would have to face the cruel truth of our situation. I only hoped our borrowed time would have lasted longer...
Paris, I still -
Let us return... Back to where each of us belongs.

Music: Gateway to the West (Balterossa Theme)

Merchant: Lately things've been a bit more muted... Lady Bertrude has been suffering from some strange illness, and that's all anyone can talk about.

It’s the same as Royotia.
Yes. We’d better look around town.

New city, so let’s talk to the people again.

Tao Tie-Admiring Child: So, I was listening to Daddy talk to some rich-looking guy... He said that Ms. Lady Bertrude was real sick an' it was all the Tao Tie's fault! That guy's gotta be fibbing! The Tao Tie's always took good care of us, so it wouldn't do anything bad like that!
Aristocratic Man: Lady Bertrude has fallen deathly ill. The town's merchants have travelled far and wide, bringing back different medicinces to try and cure her. But it has been to no avail. Her condition has steadily worsened... What strange affliction could have struck Lady Bertrude down?

Charlotte’s Admirer: So lucky! I wish she'd give me some bedside care... hurr hurr...
You’re pretty creepy, dude.
Charlotte’s Admirer: A-anyway, she's always been dainty - so delicately built, like she could fit in your pocket! But lately she's been losing weight... At this rate, Lady Charlotte will fall sick as well - and without me there to catch her! I-I have to do something!!! ...Is what I was thinking, but for some reason, they won't let me into the castle. *sigh*
You’re lucky they haven’t let you into the dungeon.

The Duchess is an incredibly strong woman, taking care of Balterossa single-handedly after her husband passed. She is much admired. If the famed trade routes of Balterossa are able to save her life, I can't think of anything more appropriate.

The Silver Falcons have received some troubling information from Intelligence... Some entity is attempting to take advantage of the Duchess's illness to inflame relations between Balterossa and Royotia. By the name of the Silver Falcons, we will do our best to avoid war at any cost.

This seems important.

Elegant Madam: Still, I was drawn to its shimmer and would gaze at it for hours. I can't quite say I've ever shaken the habit! But recently, it's seemed a little strange. Every so often, the Tao Tie seems to lose its shine... Like its heart had gone cold. Ahh, perhaps it's just the ramblings of an old biddy... I hope that's all it is, at least.

So apparently the Lady of Balterossa is sick too. Let’s have a visit.

Lately it seems my body will not agree to my spirit’s wishes… It’s almost as if some strange power tries to control me… Th-this wave… could it be…

Bartender: Oh, a new discovery from the famed scientists… intriguing. Beloved daughter, shall we take a trip to Athlum to see what the fuss is about?
A-alright…

That’s actually an important sidequest which touches on the main plot, but we’ll be putting it off until we advance the main plot.

Hey, pardner, didja hear? The boss o' this here country's been sick fer a long spell, an' ain't any o' the medicines helpin' a lick. While on the range, I rode into another country an' they were singin' a similar song. Reckon this bug is only hittin' royal-types? That sure don't sound too likely, though...

Oh, you again. Heard about you from the commander. Granted, you don't look like much, but I hear you're not too shabby with a sword. Next time we have an anti-monster operation, join us. Lately, we need all the help we can get.

There actually is another op we can do for Caedmon, but we aren’t doing it today.

Wise Old Man: I really worry for Lady Bertrude... She is deathly ill, and getting worse every day. For her to go from standing proudly at the head of our country to lying in a sickbed... How could this happen? Or - could it be...? The curse of the felled warriors of the ancient desert kingdom...? Is it possible there was truth to that story? ...Ugh, I don't want to think about it!

Uh, maybe?
Charlotte-Struck Girl: Apparently she broke up with her boyfriend! It's the absolute latest news. And when you hear who it was, you're going to flip. it was the son of Royotia's Marquis, Paris! I mean, seriously, that man is fine. And you know he's gotta be a passionate and skilled lover. *sigh* If it were me, there'd be no way I'd let a catch like that go!
She’s standing right there…

What’s up?
It really seems as if Balterossa and Royotia shall go to war. Already strengthen our armies... For a long time, Royotia has tried to build its own trade routes, independent of Balterossa's involvement.
Oh yeah, I think I helped them find one.
But Mother is strongly opposed to this. Royotia seems blind to the trials of not only creating a major trade route, but protecting it from bandits and beasts who would attack it. For them to even attempt to enforce a level of security on the road would take countless lives. Yet through the blessing of the Tao Tie, Balterossa can and has kept the Great Sand Sea under control for years. I agree with Mother... It is best for everyone if Royotia continues to use our roads. But Royotia refuses to accept this, and guerilla insurgency in Balterossa has spread... Mother is certain it is officially sponsored. But, to go to war with Royotia without any solid evidence... Tell me, Rush. Is this war truly necessary? Will no one try to stop it?
There might be one guy...
Paris... Yes, if he... If we can - Sir Rush... Will you assist me in a task? I need to stop this war!
Don't gotta ask me twice!
Thank you so much. Yes...I shall go to Royotia! Paris is the son of the Marquis. Surely he can do something!

Accepted quest: Love Will Rise Again

Balterossa and Royotia are at each other's throats. Charlotte asked me to with her to Royotia. Who can say no to such a cute gal?

With this, Charlotte leaves and we can’t find her. But she was headed for Royotia, so let’s go there. (We could also actually go to the Balterossa castle as well, but Royotia makes more sense.)

Well met, Rush Sykes. My son has told me a lot about you...
No wait, let me explain! I didn’t know the squid was in there!
Good things, don't worry! It seems that you've helped him out of many a pinch.

Right. About that war…
Royotia is continually robbed of the profits it rightly deserves by Balterossa's exploitation. Ending that cycle and gaining control of her own trade routes is my country's greatest wish. Yet that woman ignores our rights on baseless whim, and instead blames us for her own security problems. It's as if she wishes to bring us to war! And if that is so, we shall show her what the men of Royotia are made of. We shall establish our routes, and if we must fight, then so be it.
Where's Charlotte?
That's the Duchess's daughter, isn't it - the one plotting to hoodwink my son? As if I would know her location. The strumpet can die in the gutter for all I care. More importantly, might you have an idea as to where Paris could have gotten off to? We're on the cusp of war, and he's disappeared... Surely he hasn't gone to meet that trollop? He knows that Lavavender is too dangerous right now!

HINT HINT Hey guys I think maybe we should check out Lavafender

Charlotte, we haven't much time. We must bring Rush up to speed...
Oh, yes!

There’s no dungeon crawl to search for them, you just meet them. That’s a good idea, because we don’t need a dungeon crawl on top of the rest of this update.

It was to induce Royotia and Balterossa to deploy their armies, and then use a legion of monsters to completely destroy both forces.
And he just left those letters sitting around for anyone to find?
The letters were coded, their true content hidden in innocuous-looking phrases, so it took some time to decrypt the message.
Someone was trying to manipulate our countries into war. Mother and Paris's father both fell for their tricks...
They took advantage of both our relationship, and Father and the Duchess's distrust of each other. To think we were all played so easily...
Paris...

Off to Royotia!
We should head to Royotia first, yes? The troops are making their stand at the Salamander's Belly. Let us hurry, so that we may save the Balterossans as well!
A guest union has joined the party.

This choice matters less than you think. We have to do both battles anyway, so it’s really “which should we fight FIRST?”, and you fight different enemy compositions depending on which order you do the battles. I don’t think it makes enough of a difference to show off both versions of the battles. So, we’re off to the Salamander’s Belly! (I think we’ve been here once before for The Ancient War.)

Music: Beat the Odds

- Battle Video: Salamander’s Belly

Paris joins us for these battles. We have to spend the first turn closing in to get anywhere.

The Godwood boss monster appears at the end of Turn 1.

Sorry.

That’s hilariously pathetic for a dodge-counter. Pagus at this point is worthless for physical attacks, so I really hope you don’t have him use any.

Circle their flank!

On the other hand that is pretty great damage for a normal attack, even with the flank bonus. I’m wondering if this is more of a benefit of a guest union’s boosted stats, but I don’t recall other guest unions doing huge damage.

Yay!

Land Mine does some damage and lowers an enemy’s AP. I’ve been neglecting item arts, so before this update I stopped by some towns to pick up supplies so I can actually use them.

Rush and Emmy’s unions have managed to end up pretty far from the others.

Got ‘em!

It’s startling how good Gabriel has gotten on this playthrough. I think I should rotate my unions to give Violet and Glenys more of a better chance to shine, without Rush’s overpowered arts stealing XP. When I next go to look for components, Rush is going to be benched, and Glenys will take the lead.

Music: Turn the Tide

Just marching.

I have everyone stand by or defend, because as soon as one union engages the Godwood…

…some more reinforcements appear. But those are actually optional – you only have to take out the Godwood to win the battle. But I’ll kill him last for more art XP.

Support is a high-level Remedy, which does the work of three potions at once. (It’s still not great).

Watch this!

That was all Caedmon. Earthrender is super-powerful. The scary thing is that Caedmon’s been grousing at me for weapon upgrade materials (Raptor Hide) for ages, which means his weapon is outdated and he’s ready to upgrade. The really scary thing is that there is still a higher-level art past Earthrender.

Your life is over!

With the extra forces over, everyone left to move targets the Godwood.

Looks like that hurt!

Rush deals almost 15k damage by himself.

I love big numbers.

Spoiler alert: There’s no way the Godwood will live through this turn. Which is actually too bad, because I was trying to trigger a Massive Strike.

Have a taste of Athlum’s Strength!

19k damage.

We’ll wipe them out at once!

learned Nimble Acala’s Wrath IV!
learned Quadrille!
class changed to Expert Cleric!

And that’s the first battle done. I reach BR 33 at the end of it. This update was going to break 100 images and probably also the 50,000 character limit, so we’ll have to end it here. The next one should be ready soon, though, since it’s mostly done already.

Torgal learned Quadrille - the ultimate Quad-wield art – four rapid strikes, one with each weapon.

New Arts Summary
learned Nimble Acala’s Wrath IV!
learned Quadrille!
class changed to Expert Cleric!

On a test run, I got a Massive Strike on the Godwood, so I’ll show that off.

- Video: Massive Strike

One thing I learned about Massive Strikes is that if the boss had survived another turn, ALL our units could perform a Massive Strike on the next turn – not just two, ALL of them.

Ssssssort of? They're basically the item equivalent of Psionics, they mostly affect morale to varying degrees, but don't really do damage. I haven't really bothered much with item arts so far, but I might try out Shards later on and see how that goes.

Do you mean a compilation of the normal moves, or just the special moves?

The answer is that I might possibly make a compilation of many of the normal moves, but I don't think I could do all the special moves. But fortunately, someone on youtube did make a compilation of the special moves (which I can't post yet for spoiler reasons).

It takes a long time to learn all the arts - even normal weapons have different arts for different types using different grips. Learning specials takes even longer. For the specials, I'd have to recruit and train some very specific generic leaders who have different weapon types. So the answer is maybe, after I'm done the main game content, simply for the sheer amount of time needed.

I've made a few recordings of fights versus rare monsters I've encountered while grinding (for items - my BR is still below where expected) - AND there's a bonus surprise fight. Plus there will be video of three unique arts we haven't seen yet.

EDIT: gently caress you and your "Concealed Spiritlord Hord", Violet!

Spiritlords only appear in the Vale of the Gods, the Great Sand Sea, and Heroic Ramparts, and two of those places require a lot of walking, plus they usually only come in groups of 1, plus you need to land a 30% chance to CAPTURE them, and THEN you need to get a lucky 5% chance to find that if you split the captured monster, so that's a 1.5% chance to get the item per monster.

I've played SaGa games before, so I know how hard it is gain new moves - whatever you scrounge up will suffice, it'll be more than I could get by myself anyway.

I have trimmed down the Character info in the third post to basics - their class, any unique arts, and a summary of their class. The expanded and detailed information can be found in this page on the LP Test Poster.

How does the new version look?

Together, we can bring many people happiness. -OR- Love Will Rise Again, Part 2

Please, Paris, Sir Rush, save the Balterossans! They are at place called the Salamander's Tongue!

Music: Beat the Odds

- Battle Video: Salamander’s Tongue

You’re dumped immediately into a second battle. Yes, all 25 minutes are one battle. This is indicative of how things will start to go on Disc 2. The battles will get longer and harder. I’m also underleveled a bit. Once again, we need to march on Turn 1.

The Retreat Flare Trap does no damage, but substantially lowers enemy Morale. It’s the item equivalent of Bluff. It took our morale to past the halfway point.

Emmy finishes off some Jhana Shamans.

This isn’t even worth my time!

Quadrille is four rapid attacks - one with each weapon - for heavy damage. It’s the ultimate quad-wield art

Rush and Glenys combine to finish off these Raptors.

At this point, I don’t think this fight warrants unique arts that we’ve seen a bunch of times already. And at this point, it doesn’t. Later on, though…

Remember how Acala’s Wrath III did about 15,000 damage? Acala’s Wrath IV did about 25,000.

Uh-oh.

And can you believe it, but those sons-of-bitches are still alive.

Jager lays the smackdown.

Music: Turn the Tide

One of my unions will bring David back, and then whoever’s left should finish off the Jhana.

Or Paris could sneeze on them. That works too.

Here’s the second wave, featuring two boss monsters – a Killer Insect and a Weredragon. That abruptly ended our turn, so no one went to revive David.

Irina starts out with Kiss of Life, so she’ll be bringing back David.

You’ll be all right now!

Gaou heals Irina’s union with Eye Cream III.

I want this Weredragon dead ASAP, because of Surefire, which has a chance of instakill on a unit.

Get ready for the best move you will ever see!

I’m so glad that we’re finally getting into some higher-level arts. Fleche is a quick thrust that does a substantial amount of damage.

Woo-hoo!

There are few enemy unions left, but some of ours are at about half-health.

When healing happens, the “Total damage” meter counts backwards, a nice touch. Enemy healing is typically ineffective unless it’s in the hundreds of thousands of HP range. Yes, some enemies (bosses) can heal themselves for that much.

Are you all right?

That wasn’t great.

Once all the supporting units with the second wave are dead, the third wave shows up. Once again, if you kill the bosses, it ends the fight. The Abbadons are fast enemies, so they could be tricky given our current weakened state.

We’re hurt and outnumbered. This could be hard. I don’t think I can afford to get Raidlocked, so I’ll just have to press my luck and hope to heal before getting hit.

Excellent, Rush is fine now.

Emmy’s Squad did some damage, but is on the brink of death now.

That’s not going to be enough to save the Jhana.

This is really starting to look pretty bad now. We barely scratched any of them.

Music: Struggle Eternal

Nora takes out the Killer Insect, just in time before it unleashed an AoE attack.

You’ll have to face me next!

Things are looking less dangerous now.

Rush’s union just barely fails to finish off the Abbadon.

The hell’re you doing?!

Paris is showing signs of fatigue now, too.

Hartshorn is a Lotion which revives and heals. It’s pretty great, the big problem is that it takes a lot of Lotion use to get.

You’re not going to perish from that scratch, are you?

What a dick.

Music: Beat the Odds

So, uh, we’re screwed.

That wasn’t necessary.

Irina’s union heals itself, David’s union revives Jager’s union. Thankfully, the Weredragon’s Raidlock attack was a failed Surefire.

This is… the end…

This is the first chance I’ve had to show off Emmy’s Hundred Flowers unique art. You can only get that one when Emmy’s union is at critical HP.

And I’m not going to be able to show it off this time.

We’ll have to take it from here.

This is a big reason why I’m not a big fan of critical-health-activated unique arts.

Ugh this fight is going on forever. gently caress you all, bring everyone back to loving life, stop loving around.

Didn’t need the help… but thanks anyway.

About time.

I have to get the Morale up to escape the death spiral.

Ooh! Here it is!

Obnoxiously, one of the Jhana hit me with the Paralyze Gas Hex, preventing me from using Cascade Strike to finish them off.

Music: Struggle Eternal

I think we’ve worn their numbers enough to win this now. This is I think the fifth music change in the fight.

Blocter is making up for lost time now that I’ve let him use Herbs.

Here I come!

And finally the fight is over. I don’t think I finished off the last enemy union, but oh well, close enough, and everyone was alive and got art XP, which is the most important part.

learned:
  • Spring Squall!
  • Maledict II!
class changed to Adept Mysticknight!
learned Revitalize III!
learned:
  • Life Powder!
  • Restorative Herb IV!

Spring Squall is the Ultimate Dual-wield Katana art. We won’t be seeing it for a while though, as it’s time for Rush’s butt to decorate the bench for a bit.

There were casualties, but thankfully, major losses were avoided.
The world is so agitated that it even doubts the power of Remnants... Why must something like this bring us to war?
Charlotte...all hope is not lost. There is still something we can do... Something only we can do. Together, we can bring many people happiness.
Paris... But... All I've done is hurt you. After that, how could you still want me?
Oh Charlotte... The pain you caused me was like someone taking a fiery dagger to my heart. Yet through that searing pain, I felt a sweet melancholy, as if the instrument of torture branding my heart was soaked with tears... Tears you yourself has shed from the brutal memories of causing such anguish to your one true love. I loved you enough to let you go... Such emotion is not easily forgotten. I only dream that a fraction of this love is returned.
Paris... Yes. Always.
Then... I must win over my pig-headed father!
Yes, and I will tell Mother... Somehow, I'll make her understand! Sir Rush, come to the tavern later, alright? I'll have something for you!
Okay! See you later!
The guest union has left the party.

(I thought they’d never shut up.)

Mother and Lord Priam listened to our pleas. They have agreed to end the fighting. However, she refuses to even discuss the issue of the conspirators. It seems that whoever was behind all this will remain unknown...
(It seems almost like the work of the Third Committee, but that was dismantled after the death of Duke Hermeien.)
Relations between nations are naught but a clumsy dance of interactions complicated by countless outside influences... truly, politics is a trying thing. Still, I am very thankful to Mother as well as Lord Priam for reaching a compromise. I would like you to have this.
Reward: Gold Ore x3, 8000.
Now I shall bid you leave. If you are ever again in Balterossa, I am your humble servant. Paris has also sworn to help you if you are ever in need of a swordsman. But... Do not let him face too much danger, if you please... I would be rather vexed if he returns in more than one piece.
Completed quest: Love Will Rise Again

Phew! Balterossa and Royotia made nice. Charlotte and Paris got back together, but they both have a lot on their plates, looks like.

There are several tiers of rewards possible from this quest.

  • 20,000G, Rough Goblin Stone, Rough Leprechaun Stone, Rough Mermaid Stone, Rough Troll Stone
  • 15,000G, Gold Ore x5, Truesilver Ore x5
  • 8,000G, Gold Ore x3
  • 2,500G

I got the second-worst one. The wiki thinks that the reward is tied to the length of time the battles takes. If both battles combined are 1-10 turns, you get Reward 1. 11-15 turns gets you reward 2, 60-20 for reward 3, and 21+ for reward 4.

That kinda makes sense since these monsters are supposed to be also fighting armies, so the longer you take, the more casualties they’ll take. But my total time was 21 Turns and I got the under 21 turn award, so…

But I consider the art XP to be its own reward. I don’t need G and the stones can be harvested if I really need them for someone. The secondary reward though is that we can now recruit Paris, which we’ll do in a minute.

It seems the Royotian Guard suffered many losses.
Sometimes I believe ignorance really is bliss... Especially in things political...
Sir Paris will be the next Marquis of Royotia. I can't begin to imagine the pressure Lady Charlotte faces.
Did you hear? Mother has allowed Paris and I to court!
In the end the incident came to a...touching conclusion. Certainly, using the two of them required more than a little care. Nevertheless, in the end it became a good bargaining chip...

Okay, now back to Royotia.

Go for it!
Alright. It’ll definitely be a challenge, but that’s not gonna stop me!

We’ve hit BR 33, which means Blocter can learn Hexes, Loki can learn Herbs, and Leshau can learn Psionics.

Maybe, if I disabled all other things Blocter could do, and had him focus exclusively on Hexes and nothing else, I MIGHT be able to get his Mystics and Item arts to balance out eventually, which could possibly get him out of the Scout class. But Blocter doesn’t have the INT to be good at casting, and spending the time on that would just make him weaker anyway.

Was thinking of learning Herbs… Whadda you think?
Yeah, I’d go for it!
Alright. I’ll give it a go.

About time, too, because David’s union could really use more healing. Pagus stubbornly refuses to learn Vivification Herb. I didn’t get a message from Leshau, probably because he’s not in the active party, but if I put him in I bet he’d ask about learning Psionics. Psionics are good, but Lesahu’s timing is bad, because we can now get Paris, whose Psionics are miles ahead of Leshau.

What’s good? I’m thinking we should get some Vulture Underbelly Fur? It’ll be the jump-off.
Alrighty!
Word. Then let’s roll.

Rush… Shall we proceed to the field of battle and wreak havoc upon the monster hordes? I… must become someone she can depend on…
Sounds like a plan.
Excellent! My arm sings with the promise of victory!

Yep, we’re overdue for another session of component hunting. Caedmon keeps complaining about not having Raptor Hide.

We’ll be doing that next update. OH BOY!!!!! :shepicide: Honestly, the anticipation of having to do this part is one of the reasons why my enthusiasm for the game flagged and this update was delayed.

I already started the process. There’s about 40 unique components between our party members and reserves, and it took me about half an hour with the wiki to look up what everyone wanted and where to find it. And that’s the easy way. If you don’t know where you can find the components, you could spend ages aimlessly wandering.

…We’re still not done this update.

It seemed like the Balterossan army suffered heavy losses.
The relationship between countries is very much affected by the countries that surround them.
Rush. Thanks to you and my son, we suffered much fewer losses than I'd feared. Still, Paris still has a lot to learn about politics. He still seems a bit awkward with these matters of state."
Master Paris and Lady Charlotte are still very young. I fear they will suffer many hardships in the future...

To the Royotia Guild…

At this point in the game, that’s really cheap, surprisingly.

Paris

Son of the marquis of Royotia. Pure-hearted and slightly naïve. Sworn to his paramour, Charlotte.

Class: Paladin
Initial BR: BR 48
HP: (777)
Str / Int: (43 / 51)
Union Name: Paris’ Class

Current Arts
  • Two-Handed: (Double Strike III, Thunderclap II, Cascade Strike)
  • Remedies: (Restore III, Refresh II, Rejuvenate II, Revitalize)
  • Psionics: (Bluff III, Confuse III, Enrage II, Addle II, Maledict II)
Future Arts
  • Wards @ BR 50
  • Traps @ BR 65
  • Arcana: Rejuvenating Water, Fatal Eclipse

Comments
After many quests involving him in Disc 1, Paris finally is recruitable in Disc 2 after completing one final quest. He starts off with Psionics, making him very helpful, and he can even learn the Fatal Eclipse Arcana for Psionics. His intellect is higher, but his Strength score is also good, meaning he will perform well when used in melee combat as well. If that wasn’t already good enough, he can learn Wards too. This guy should be in your party ASAP.

Tags: Versatile, Mystic, Healer, Combat, Psionics, Wards, Arcana

But at this point, every new Hello is also met with a Goodbye. I have so many good party members, that it’s time to start shuffling the lousy ones to the bench.

This means that it’s the end for Baulson in the active party. He’s been with us for a long time, and he’s been a good party member, but at this point he’s simply outclassed. Paris starts out with better 2H arts and only two fewer points into Strength.

New Arts Summary
learned:
  • Spring Squall!
  • Maledict II!
class changed to Adept Mysticknight!
learned Revitalize III!
learned:
  • Life Powder!
  • Restorative Herb IV!
  • Poison Gas!
learned Restorative Herb I!

At one point, it seems likely that you had to manually visit locations to end sidequests, because there’s some dialogue that we can’t normally access - the royal courts of Balterossa and Royotia discussing the outcome of the battle. I've inserted it into the update.

Battle: Salamander’s Tongue

Poll: What should we do soon?
A) Attempt to squash the remnants of the Conqueror's army?
B) Hunt a lot of rare monsters in a new dungeon?

Next update, I’ll be looking for components for my whiny-but-necessary party members.

I don't usually post these full shots, so I can see why you're confused, but in the middle-right it shows 5/5 Battle Unions and 18/18 battle units. I literally can't use any more people than I am already (without using a Trainer to cheat). I wish that at least the limit was 18 units and 6 unions, but sadly it isn't.

Like wiegieman says, it's a tradeoff between having fewer, tougher unions and more, weaker unions. Right now, I'm okay with weaker unions, but sometimes there are fights where you need the edge extra HP can give you, and you'll want 4 unions packed as much as you can.
