Talking to her with Klein when she's still an enemy tends to make her subordinates run away.

Huh.

I tried not rescuing one of the pegs the first time. She got doubled and one-rounded by a brigand.

Oh yeah they're just awful. Okay so... let me crack open these events.

code:

Which one of you are Tate and Thany... the ones with the complex ASM

Okay so the first one just lets Thany recruit Tate like what happened in playthrough one, but only if Label26 has activated I think

code:
label25:

TEX1 0x955
REMA
CUSI 0x2E 0x0
ENUT 0xA
CUSI 0xD9 0x40

label26:
MUS2 0x12
TEX1 0x956

Yeah, not all that easy to understand.

Game Over
Return of Mido

It's not easy to make black people in these games, you have to rely on reshaded sprites because so often are skintones shared with horses, boots, gloves, belts and more horses. I think I got lucky with this one, but I know the Pirate version definitely uses a reshade.

Ignore the fact the sprite is all chopped up, that's how the game cuts it up when you go to insert them back into the rom.

Well MUS is Music of course, TEX calls a text function, REMA is sort of like a pause function to space it out.

Now CUSI is change army and 0x2E is Tate, 0x0 is Player. ENUT makes the event ID used, now D9 is Tates allied Pegasi, so it turns them allied (0x40) and then CHAI is Change AI, which changes their AI to "Run like heck" over "Engage and Suicide" MURE fades out the music and ENDA ends the event!
So that's what happens if you talk to Tate with Thany after Thany has talked to Tate when you've recruited Klein (Turns Tate blue and her pegs green)

Now if you just talk to tate, it just turns her Allied and turns her pegs Allied... except it leaves their AI as "Charge the enemy and stab their face." so they go suicde on everything.

Anything with gold trim also shares shades with skin.

I mean I do consider it an interesting challenge to make a decent sprite within the constraints of a GBA palette, but... sometimes it's just obnoxious as gently caress.

I did think a little about our old buddy Ephraim, and here's my take.

Cannibalizing the cape lining and using the darkest leather as the lightest skin colour is enough to get four dark skin shades. Turning the gold trim white (using the colour of the pants) and turning the gloves into gauntlets also works, and I think that actually leaves one whole extra colour.

Still, if we had just 20, he could have leather gloves, gold trimmed armour and his Dracula cape together with darker skin.

Chapter 11: Flight Toward Freedom or, Hunka Hunka Borin' Love

So to get back to what we should actually be doing...

Here's chapter 11.

Caldonia is one of the main islands that make up the Western Isles, the other two being Fibernia and Dia.

I will, by the way, be continuing off the save where I did loving Everything on chapter 10, because, well, it's there. Also I'm pretty sure I'm going to want to promote both Wolt and Dorothy anyway, so having two of the necessary items won't exactly hurt.

Not sure how I'll handle future maps where I miss poo poo, I want to say that this is a one-time offer, but I can't actually say that :v:

Anyway.

awaiting transport to Eburacum, the Mine of Death. When Roy arrives at Castle Edina, the situation appears dire...

The map is not too terribly large or complicated...

...but there are some complications, including another berserker (not on a throne or gate this time!) who could put the hurt on some unlucky person,

...this rear end in a top hat,

...and his almost as assholish mate down here. We won't even be able to leave our starting island without getting into their reach. I wanted to get my peg knight on, but with the horrible ballista death aura covering half the map, that would mean letting them sit in the upper right corner trembling with fear for like half the fight and that would be boring.

So instead, I'm going with some of our tried and tested non-flying units, and Fir again because I still cling to the vain hope that I'll be able to use her at some point.

These four fuckers pop in as soon as the map begins.

A-are you sure about this? If we get caught we're-

Don't be stupid! If we stay, we'll be worked to death! You're just going to lie down and take that? Don't you have a family or something back home?

Yeah...

"Well I have a Lucina body pillow, that counts as 'or something' right?"

There are people coming to help us from the northeast. We just have to make it there in one piece!

Strangely, these guys are not going to be the problem with this map.

Meanwhile, in the castle on the lower left...

...Then there must be a traitor among us. Morgan!

Yes, Lord Arcardo.

I will return to Jutes. Don't let them escape. Send more hands to the mines as well. I can't afford to lose more workers!

If any of these guys bothered to chase after the NPCs, there would be nothing we could do to help them.

Happily, they are content to sit there until we're more or less in sniping range.

Roy's boys (and girls, etc) start in the top-right corner, as I'm sure you remember from the neat little minimap.

Yes, that is Castle Edina. The people kidnapped on the Isles are first sent there. They are then taken to Eburacum and forced to work in the mines. As it happens, today is the weekly shipment of captives to the mines. It will be difficult to rescue them once they've been sent off.

Then you're saying we have to rescue them now!

Yes. I already had some spies infiltrate the castle and help the people escape.

What will the captives do once they're out?

I told them to send the captives to the northeast. In other words, our present location.

Then we must rescue those people before sieging the castle.

Before we can rescue the people, we need to murder everything that stands between us and them.

I mean we might be able to talk to these fine people and persuade them to see the error of their ways or something but that would take effort and that's not how we roll.

You may also notice something unusual about this picture.

A mysterious bard who supports the resistance on the Western Isles.

This asshat is hanging out on the right side.

With growths of HP 80, Str 5, Skl 5, Spd 65, Lck 65, Def 25, Res 55, Elphin claims to be a lover, not a fighter. I'm not sure about the former, but he is absolutely right about the latter. Don't let Elphin get hit. He will die horribly and then where will you be?

...

You know what actually-

let's just move on. So you all know what a dancer does, right? Elphin does the same thing, except his command is called "play".

And boom, you've traded Elphin's turn in exchange for your most awesome unit (or sometimes maybe just Saul) getting to go a second time. You know what this means, right? Twice the Wolt. Think about it.

The NPCs will be heading towards our starting position.

This could be problematic, because there's a berserker between them and it.

We'll need to distract him.

But there are two ways around this map, and we'll have some people going down the right side as well.

Sweet.

Sweeter.

...not as sweet. Really needing some speed on you, Lilina! I keep forgetting how goddamn slow you are!

Of course,

...the ballista bastards will be doing their damndest to get in the way. Nine damage to Jerrot isn't bad; he has 11 defence at this point, so it's 20 base damage. A lot of people will want to stay way out of range, even without a crippling weakness to arrows.

The one below goes for Chad. This does not go quite as well for it.

Getting shot at builds character.

Allen, with the other team, also builds character.

That's a lot of character.

...

Do not gently caress with berserkers. Do not. A 20+% chance to lose someone is not worth it.

Fortunately, all this one had was a steel axe. And he was worth a lot of experience points, being a promoted enemy.

Chad and...

Ogier are clearing up the last of the enemies south of the starting position.

I want to say Chad got the better of these levels.

Suddenly, enemy reinforcements! That looks worrying.

This is another promoted enemy, an advanced shaman. He doesn't come with anything too exciting (Flux) but with 15 mag, that will hurt a physical unit.

The archer on the lower right opts to leave his ballista and shoot Chad with his normal bow. I'm okay with this. He's closer to our pointy things this way.

If the ballista guy targeted these guys at all, they would also die before we could do something about it, bar maybe a pegasus suicide charge.

Saul gets this patching up some scratches Chad took.

Suddenly, entirely expected pirate reinforcements! Good thing we're just about ready to deal with them.

Something's going on in the village, however...

The lord of that castle killed my mates. I won't let their deaths go unavenged.

You mean that crew that was always with you...

Yeah... They were taken to the mines and told that they would be given work. But they were all worked like slaves until they... died.

......

Maybe they weren't the brightest bunch, but they were good people... And then they were killed... just like that...!!

Do you intend to avenge them on your own?

Is there something wrong with that?

No... But I thought you were going to go back to your merchant business.

Yeah, well, I've got bigger problems now... Once my mates get their revenge, and once the war subsides, maybe I will.

We won't forget you, Geese. You and your crew risked your lives to get us food and supplies. If you ever need anything, we'll be here.

Maybe I'll take you up on that, if I'm still alive.
...Thanks.

That must mean I get something special if I recruit him and have him visit the village!

Geese should be able to hold his (their?) own against the pirates for a while, with both a hand and steel axe. Still, don't want to lose those experience points!

A pirate from the Western Isles, seeking vengeance for his crew.

Speaking of which, once he's recruited and can get those, his growths will be HP 85, Str 50, Skl 30, Spd 40, Lck 40, Def 20, Res 10. Ten points behind Gonzales in speed and strength - fifteen ahead in skill. Geese looks more balanced - and he can walk on water, too.

The NPCs are drawing close! ...so are their pursuers. And the ballista butthead is out of arrows. We can't kill him or his friend since no one in this group can cross mountains, but he can't do anything to us either.

The cavalry has arrived, and proceeds to miss two javelin throws. Allen...

Doesn't look like any of these schmucks can talk to Geese, so I'm having Allen kidnap him.

Surely the rest of these people are enough to handle a few more pirates.

The NPCs have passed us and are out of danger. That's because the danger will now focus entirely on us. We'll have to bring out the big guns.

Druids have these huge-rear end robes... certainly a lot different from the dark mages we've been getting lately.

And like any other promoted enemy, they're worth a lot of exp for a non-promoted character. Wolt still has a chance to cap strength, speed, and defence.

Roy gets a slightly less impressive level dealing with the shaman.

Noah gets nothing dealing with the fighter.

Suddenly... more green units?

That's right.

Then we've no time to lose. Let's begin this daring prison break, shall we?

...I'm sorry to ask for your help like this. I know you're looking for your daughter...

Don't be absurd! Consider it payment for your hospitality. I won't let some blood-sucking lord take advantage of his people! I'm Bartre the Brave, and I'll smash these puny insects!

...maybe "Alucard" would have been the best choice after all.

A warrior who cares deeply for his daughter.

No hint as to who it is? Boo.

Bartre is a disgusting prepromote, but he has a rad stache, more than 20 strength, and a brave axe. That's almost as good as Marcus' hair. His growths (because of course we can recruit him!) are HP 70, Str 40, Skl 20, Spd 30, Lck 20, Def 20, Res 5, which is pretty much worse than Geese all around. He does, however, have a pretty significant strength advantage, and doesn't cost a promotion item to use. Maybe once we're a little further in, he'll see some use.

Also, he's going to suicide on Morgan if we don't do something. Commence the doing.

Dorothy has a ballista! ...And nothing to use it on. :saddowns:

All right, you get over here-

...and then we had the full set! Getting kinda tired of carting green dudes around...

It's not as easy as just waltzing up to Morgan and running him through, though.

Good. Deploy them immediately. Spread them around the castle to defend us on all sides.

That's not very reinforcements, though they do run up pretty far into our formation.

Meanwhile, I desperately try to get some use out of Fir, but she's just so... so level 2.

Chad is a lot better.

We have reinforcements and the trio who were lazing around the castle have started to move. This guy has a Lancereaver, but no one here has a lance. Another one has an Armourslayer. We don't have that, either, although Wolt certainly likes to take hits like a knight.

Noah misses two 80% hits :sigh:

Wolt just doesn't care if they hit or miss.

Lilina had to take a sword through the everything and dodge an arrow to live. That was kinda undeserved.

Chad makes sure we don't have another close call like that.

To be perfectly honest I RNG abused until Fir got a strength level, it's either that or bench her on charges of sucking horribly and I want our little shrub to grow into a tall and beautiful tree, drat it.

Also Elphin levels up but I don't think anyone cares.

Noah's levels, meanwhile, are always welcome.

As are Lance's, especially ones with strength in them, even if there's little else.

More reinforcements!

More?!

Go away.

Okay so he won't cap speed, but strength and defence are still possible!

Okay, I think we're in the cl

son of a gently caress

An Eturian commander in charge of Castle Edina.

I get this weird feeling, like I should expect shenanigans.

Regardless, a look at Morgan since we're about to fry him. He has pretty impressive defence, but his res isn't that great. He only has a regular javelin for ranged combat, though he has both a silver axe and a horseslayer if you get up close, which could be problematic I guess. Over all, a lot nicer than a berserker (:argh:).

Hurry and kill the ones who escaped!
Wait, you're not one of my men... Wh-who are you?!

Oh, just a cameo character from a better game than yours :smug:

Morgan javelins Noah, Noah Elfires Morgan.

Even Wolt can't guarantee much against a general on a gate.

But he pulled out that a killer bow for a reason! And now Morgan is within the one-poke-with-a-rapier health range, so...

Who... are you people...?

We are people who...

...gain amazing levels by killing you!

And a decent one getting rid of the last mercenary spawn.

Jerrot gets a Jeigan LevelTM taking care of the last archer.

Well then, now that we finally have some peace and quiet, let's get to the recruiting.

I want to ask why you're fighting against the soldiers.

Who wants to know?

Roy, leader of the Lycian Army. We're here on behalf of Eturia...

You're with Eturia?! Then you're with the enemy. Get ready to die!

Roy would gut you like a fish, boy. Stand down. I didn't kidnap rescue your rear end just so you can go suicide on a vastly superior unit with weapon triangle advantage.

Also he still has the rapier equipped and it would be such a waste.

Slow down! We're fighting the castle's troops too.

And yet Eturia sent you? I don't understand.

I don't either. We were dent by Eturia to get rid of the bandits here, but something's strange.

...You say you're fighting the castle's troops. I'm for hire, if you'll take me.

What?

I'm a seafaring man, so I know both the land and sea around the Isles. You look a bit lost, so I could be a good guide for you.

That would help, but why?

I want to help with your mission. To be honest, I'm a pirate, so I'm probably the type you were sent to get rid of. But I only go after the rich. They have more than their fair share anyway.

Fire Emblem, are you trying to preach communism to my god-fearing american audience...?

Well then, if you'll join us, we're pleased to have you. We don't know this area at all, so it's been difficult thus far.

Sounds like we have a deal! Leave it to me!

Can you taste it? You'll have your vengeance. And after you do, I might just tag along with this Roy fellow for a while...

That's one down. Ask a stupid question, get a stupid Anser, I guess?

...no, shame on me, that was bad. Anyway.

Time for the big scary looking dude.

Y-yes...

Even Roy is intimidated, so you know he's scary looking!

We fight for the people suffering under your tyranny! En garde!

W-wait! We're on your side!

You aren't with the castle?

We're trying to capture it, actually.

Oh! Sorry then.

I am Roy, leader of the Lycian Army.

Lycia? You've come a long way...

We were sent by Eturia to rid the Isles of the bandits.

What's that?! So you are with Eturia!

Please calm yourself! We share the same goal. We want to bring peace to the Isles.

...You may end up against Eturian nobility.

...Our mission is to find and eliminate wrongdoers on the Isles. Social status matters not.

You, my friend, are a man of conviction! Very well! I think I'll join your little army!

You'll help us? Thank you!

And that's the recruitment!

Imagine my surprise when I found this in the process of trying to get Geese back over to the village where he started :downs:

I was going to say I'm not sure I see the family resemblance here.

Fir! I've been looking for you.

Then I realized how bushy this man's moustache is.

Father, I've already made up my mind. I want to become a great master of the sword like Mother...

Now it just seems natural.

That is good. I don't intend to drag you home. In fact, I want to help you on your journey.

Help me?

I know well the hardships one faces in a journey of self-improvement. I can help you get out of a bind if things get rough.

But Father, if you keep helping me, my training is meaningless.

Nonsense. With your old man around, we can practice sparring any time! Do you refuse your father's love?!

No! It's nothing like that, but...

It's settled then. But first we capture the castle.

I guess I should tell Roy that we have another member...

I think he knows. :allears:

Klain's white gem comes in real handy here. Elphin came with a blue one (5000 bucks) so we're pretty well stocked on tomes and vulneraries. We are running a bit low on iron swords, though...

I accidentally carried off Bartre towards the village instead of Geese. Like 8 turns down the drain...

Then please, take this. I grabbed it as I escaped from the castle. I hope everyone else made it out...

...and it turns out he doesn't even get a unique conversation. :shepicide:

Geese gets a red gem. We're selling that, too.

Oh, and turns out I never actually had this conversation on the good run of chapter 10.

there are others still suffering in the mines.

Ah well. Time to seize the castle.

That is correct. To liberate the Western Isles, we must take the capital.

Then our next destination is Jutes.
...Elphin, may I ask you something?

Of course, Lord Roy.

Pardon me if I am mistaken, but are you of high Eturian nobility?

What?!!
...What makes you think that?

I can't quite explain it, but... The way you talk sounds very educated. In Ostia, I learned how to study people and size them up. Am I right?

That's right, Roy has learned to read power levels without a scouter. :ssj:

(Elphin's is three. Barely.)

What would you do if you are?

Oh. Nothing in particular. I'm sure you have a good reason to hide your identity. You can tell me when you feel the time is right.

......

Let's head for Jutes! To save the Isles and defeat the true enemy of the people!

Indeed, comrade Roy!

But we're actually not done yet.

What?! Who are you?

Here, give this to General Roy. Thanks to him, we can see our families again.

We of the Western Isles always pay our debts of gratitude!

Tell him thanks.

We're grateful from the bottom of our hearts!

Now that was a rescue mission I don't mind doing! The Energy ring boosts either strength or magic, depending on what kind of character it's used on, so it's definitely one of the better boosters, along with the speedwings. Naturally, I intend to give this to Elphin, who really needs the boost.

But not right now. For now, we march on Jute to bring the glorious people's revolution to the corrupt bourgeoisie. We are going to paint the town... red. :ussr:

It may not exactly be how you're supposed to do it, but it's usually what I personally end up doing. The NPCs are suicidal idiots, so if you want the rewards (I'm a Fire Emblem player, perfect run every time or bust) then it's the easiest way to ensure that they don't make any suicidal screw-ups. I'll usually try to drop some of the Cavalier NPCs close to the exit point (aka close enough to leave the map on the NPC turn) in order to free up a few of my units. Otherwise yeah, I hold on tight until everything is dead and only then let the idiots have free reign of the map.

Now imagine doing that map on hard mode with same-turn moving enemy reinforcements.:suicide:

Chapter 12: The True Enemy or, More Like Mana-kill-me

Now I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I'm actually not blind when it comes to this chapter. Usually, I do my little turn on the catwalk, yeah, on the catwalk pre-map check to see if there's anyone with a boring face that needs to go, but some stuff happened and I ended up sitting around for a while so I know I need to hurry up here if I want stuff. And we all want stuff, right?

the Isles' largest city and its capital.

So let's get kickin'.

is an Eturian of high nobility, but not of importance to the Eturian court.
Roy, still wary of how Eturia may respond to his attack,

I think we have enough people who want a piece of him that we'll have to draw Lots.

Lord Arcardo. Why do you fret so?

"You know that red-haired kid? Turns out he's got a mystical beast with him, something called a 'useful archer'. If he can do that to the rules of nature, imagine what he'll do to me!"

"Dude, we're summoning dragons to take over the continent and even I know a fairytale when I hear one."

It's the Lycian Army! They come for my blood!

Yes, they have been a thorn in Bern's side for some time... We knew it would be difficult if they became too friendly with Eturia. That's why we had you send them here.

"As you know."

It seems, however, they fight even better than expected.

"We suspect romhacking may be involved, but so far we haven't been able to prove it."

You don't understand the gravity of this situation! Do you realize how much I've lost thanks to their meddling? All the riches I've gotten from these islands are gone! ...And on top of that, now they want my life! Once they arrive, my legacy is finished! My hands are shaking. I don't know what to do...

Put on some clean pants, come out of that room and die with something resembling dignity?

...It was just a suggestion.

My, how you worry. I suggest you flee to Eturia.

You will allow it?

Warfare is Bern's strong suit. We also have our secret weapon ready to brandish. With it we shall erase the Lycian Army once and for all.

But...

Lord Arcardo. Once Bern and Eturia join forces, we will have nobody to fear. Am I wrong?

No... No! You're right. I leave them to you.

Arcardo escapes downstairs. Flaer takes the throne in his stead.

If we defeat the Lycian Army here, the Isles shall be ours...

That's a big "if". A F...

...

shut up.

Once we take it, we can finally go home.

That's not even an "if", it's a "when".

I have already sent someone

The one over there dressed like a dancer?

Yes, that's her.

Your Majesty?

...I know not of what she speaks.

Lalum, why do you call me "Your Majesty"?

HuH? ...Oh! Ah... er...

......

......

......

"Okay so you know that's bullshit and you know I know it's bullshit, but I'm just not going to say anything and you'll owe me a favour. Deal?"

"...Deal."

":downs:"

My apologies, Lord Roy. This is Lalum, a member of the resistance.

You're Roy? Everyone on the Isles has heard of you! They all call you the Savior from the East.

Whoa! Please leave a little distance!

Roy, your face is all red. How cute!!

I'm pretty sure that's his beard.

...Lalum...

I've been hearing strange rumors. The people here say that an "unhuman" resides in this castle.

An "unhuman"...?

Oh, yes. They say he changes form into something that looks like a dragons!

You say manakete, I say manakete...

A human? That can change into a dragon?!

I don't know... But that's what I hear.

We must proceed with caution.

If you need to go fast, Ogier has you covered.

...If you need to go fast and also do something else... Well, let's just hope going fast is enough for now. I am also bringing Lugh because he may have disappointed me a few times in a row but he's still faster than Lilina and I'm pretty sure I need him for something here.

This map is a bit odd in that we start in two separate groups. Fortunately we do get to pick who goes where, so it's easy enough to build balanced teams. (I have Chad, Jerrot, Ogier, Dorothy, and Saul on the right.)

Before we get started, let's take a moment to appreciate this rear end in a top hat.

THIS rear end in a top hat RIGHT HERE.

What I wouldn't do for a siege tome, or better yet a ballista... and since I'm already dreaming, a portable ballista... with like 60 uses... and a crit bonus... and... and excuse me while I run off to take a cold shower and let's never mention this again.

I may end up regretting this, but it's not as if I won't be able to steamroll the rest of the game with my awesome Wolt anyway :smug:

Nothing of note happens on the first round.

But on the second...

You called...?

I could probably have thought of something to replace his portrait with, but I don't think it would have been an improvement.

I will make a report about the Lycian Army to General Narcian. I want you to defend the castle while I am away.

...Understood.

Hm? Who's there?!

......
Just the wind...?
Ahem. I will take my leave now. I leave them to your discretion.

...Understood.

Normal weapons won't even scratch its skin. These manaketes... They certainly are terrifying beasts.

That's not a nice thing to say. Bantu fed me pickles. How many beasts have you known to feed people pickles? You're a jerk. t:mad:

Bern really has brought dragons into this world.
...What to do now...?
I guess I'll pose as a soldier and observe the dragon's power.

Holy poo poo that is the smuggest looking kid in the universe.

He parks himself on the far left here and will be sitting there for the rest of the map.

Both fighters attack Fir. Neither of them hit. She even manages to kill one!

...because he had been weakened with javelins on the first round, but still!

The one on the other side is marginally more threatening, but he has to hit before he can crit and he can't hit worth one bit. 'Cause he's a twit.

Wait, what's thi

When I said I wanted a siege tome, I meant I wanted me to have it!

...

Apparently Eclipse is Dickmove Alpha, except with an atrocious hit rate and... nothing else going for it. I don't know what they were thinking with this poo poo, but I'm glad they did, because it means I can just ignore it.

And-

...I can just ignore this, too. Why did he target the guy with actual Res on this team? :iiam:

Well, I certainly don't mind that he did, it's just...

The real reason Saul's on that side is because he can use the restore staff and Clarine can't, but she can use Unlock. I'm not sure it was worth it, but she can.

Lugh gets to finish the second fighter, and I'm not sure that was worth it either.

Eat your vegetables, Fir.

Wait, would that be cannibalism?

Chad has opened one of the three doors on this end. Ogier still hasn't used up his armourslayer.

Jerrot will take the left path while the rest go through the opened door. I don't actually do this; sure I could heal her with Saul but there's still priests with healsticks in there and the sniper won't actually move so he's more trouble than he's worth.

Jerrot weakened this guy; he suicides on the next round.

Fir still can't hurt knights. She also can't dodge. Goddammit Fir.

One more sleep staff use left.

All these walled-off areas makes this map 2-range central. Fortunately, our ranged attacks are a lot better than theirs.

And no more stupidity out of you, thank you very much.

I was going to set Lugh up for a kill, but Allen missed one of his javelins so I'm left with a 1-health knight :argh:

Fir can do damage with the Wo Dao. She didn't need the crit, but it looked cool, so it's fine.

This, not so fine... but hey. She has 16 levels to cap that strength, right...?

Speaking of capping, I guess Noah won't be doing it. Still really good, though!

That's three, no more sleep staff!

Fir also has a chest key. If only we had someone who knows how to use dark magic...

This could come in handy!

Jerrot tangles with the archers up here. One of them has a long bow, but he only deals one damage.

None, now.

If he moved, this guy would be a pain and a half. Guess that's why they made him sit still.

Wolt's gonna love this.

And someone's gonna love this, not sure who, but we'll find out eventually.

There was a priest with a Physic staff here. It's gone now. Instead, one of the fighters runs up and chucks a hand axe at Jerrot. He doesn't hit.

Hey, look what we can do!

Lord Roy, the issue was settled.

I can't help but imagine Wolt went up to some random dude who looked like he may have done something wrong and started berating him for getting on Roy's nerves.

Probably Allen.

More importantly, this is a battlefield. You never know where enemies are hiding. Keep on your guard.

Wolt... You're starting to sound like Merlinus and Marcus.

Am I? Thank you! That is such praise. All I desire is to be as loyal a servant as they are.

...Are you serious?

Of course!

......

Lord Roy? Is something wrong?

No.
Leave me alone for a while, would you?

Lord Roy...?

That... didn't look very supportive.

That's the third door down.

Dorothy tries out the Brave bow, but she still can't use it. So sad.

Only one more chest to go.

One of the five axe dudes over here is a warrior. Allen can't really stand up to him on equal terms, but with Noah's help, he gets the kill.

And a pretty nice level.

Fir has accomplished everything she'll do on this map. Lance goes to pick her up.

Then, suddenly!

All the way out here in the Isles West,
folks work to death for nobles in their nest!
This castle's sure to be brimming with treasure! All this loot was stolen anyway. Might as well take it off these nobles' hands.

Yeah uh, good luck with that...

Roy can one-round this guy with his iron sword. Even without a crit.

A-rank swords now! Only one left until he can start swinging Durandal around.

I would have liked to feed this guy to Lance, but there's no one who can hit him without killing him, so weakening him is out of the question.

There's a wall, and a door. Who actually goes in through the front door? Seriously?

And that was the last chest!

...Of course the priest in the throne room has Sleep, too. Ogier takes the hit... right in front of the breakable wall.

We'll have to rescue him out of there or something.

drat it! Turns out you can't steal with a full inventory. Why can't I just send the lockpicks to Merlinus like everything I pick up from chests?!

Wolt is better at this than Ogier.

Gimme that.

Yoink!

And now the path to the boss is open.

Might as well let the unconscious Ogier do some good. No reinforcements for you, buddy!

We'll be able to wrap things up before they get here.

......

...Th-that's all, sir.

Don't worry, he won't be around for long. :smug:

Nope.

And no more stupidity out of you.

Lugh is finally within reach to talk to the mysterious shaman.

Lugh...! What are you doing here?

I'm glad you're OK. We were all worried about you. I know you wanted to train your magic skills, but you left so suddenly.

I couldn't have learned magic if I'd stayed in that orphanage. It was a miracle I picked up as much as I did.

Raigh... The orphanage is gone.

What? What happened?

Bern came... and burned it down.

...What happened to everybody?

Poppa was killed trying to protect us... The young children are under the care of the St. Elimine Church now.

...I see. It's for the best... They'll be happier at the church than at that dilapidated orphanage.

You don't have to be so callous about it.

......

Raigh! Come with us. We'll defeat Bern, and then we can go back to the children!

Sorry, not interested.

But-

Then again... the Lycian Army might be good company. They're sure to come across more dragons at some point.
All right, you got me. I suppose I'll go with you.

Raigh...

I just want you to know one thing. I'm not joining to avenge Poppa or the orphanage!

I know, Raigh.

Then stop looking at me like that!

:confuoot:

A young shaman traveling to perfect his dark magic.

Bit of a little poo poo, isn't he?

Raigh's growths are HP 55, Mag 45, Skl 55, Spd 40, Lck 15, Def 15, Res 35. Looks okay I guess? Don't have a lot to say at this point.

He also comes with this, which could be handy at some point.

Well then, the... boss...

Yeah, Jerrot isn't going to do anything against that. He'll sit here instead.

A mysterious figure sent from Bern to assist in the Western Isles.

Manaketes have poo poo stats but awesome stat boosts from dragonstones, yak yak, same as oh just about every other game where they appear.

Ein has 26 effective defence. List of the people in this party who can reliably inflict physical damage on him:

We'll go with magic, okay.

That would look a whole lot more threatening if...

...I wasn't going to burn you while you just sit there and take it.

...

It's... it's a boss... without a ranged weapon?!

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

The healers and physical people can't do much at this point, so they just mill about aimlessly.

Hey, it's the reinforcements! One of them a warrior.

wait what

You said reinforcements from the south. Nothing about these assholes!

Well wyverns or no, we still need to go pester Cath.

Hm? ...You again? You always come and mess up my plans. Do you have it out for me or something?

No! I just... wanted to apologize.

...Excuse me?

The last time we met, I was pretty callous. I said you shouldn't steal, but I didn't even realize what you'd been through...

Oh, that? Whatever. I don't care.

But I still think what you do is wrong.

You've got some nerve, you know that?

Just give me a chance.

A chance?

Once this war is over, I promise to help rebuild your village. I'll be sure the taxes are put to good use too. Just please, stop looting.

......
How long will that be?

Whenever this war ends. I can't say when...

And you expect me to wait patiently until then?

No. All I want is your faith.

...Why are you so kind to me? I'm just a thief.

Without you, we wouldn't have escaped Wagner's trap. Maybe you didn't care about helping us, but the fact is that you did. You saved our lives. You're more than just a thief.

If things keep going like they have... I guess you'll get in my way no matter where I go.

As long as you appear in our path.

Fine, you win. I'll stop looting battlefields.

You will? Thank you.

But I'm coming with you.

What? Why?

Actions speak louder than words. Prove to me that you'll be true to your promise.

I won't disappoint you!

Guess I could have let her keep those lockpicks, huh. And for all that work...

A young thief who steals only from the rich.

...we finally get... Cath. Who is far behind Chad. And even Astore. The only reason she'll stop looting battlefields is because we have people who are better to do it for us.

...That said though, her growths are fairly comparable to Chad's - HP 80, Str 40, Skl 45, Spd 85, Lck 50, Def 15, Res 20 - so she could be trained into a pretty effective unit... but +5% speed for -10% strength probably isn't worth it; I'd expect Chad to turn out better.

For comparison.

Saul wakes up Ogier, because he can.

He goes over here to see if he can get some extra exp while we play around with Ein.

Wolt can actually damage him! For two points a pop.

We'll let Chad in on the reinforcements, too.

And let's park Roy here so we can at least see what Ein's attack looks like.

Ow.

Well, he doesn't have a crit rate, so whatever.

Chad can only chip at the warrior, but even chipping is profitable against a high-level opponent.

Once we stop fooling around, Ein goes down pretty quickly. He wasn't a very interesting character.

It's... defensive.

Enough chipping still results in death!

Ogier gets in on it too, but

...the wyverns have lances and WTA so gently caress this noise.

Actually it kinda was.

The dragons' power is truly... horrific.

How many of these dragons does Bern have...? How can we expect to be victorious against monsters like these?!

Lord Roy! Keep a level head.

Ah...

...I understand your worries. But if you panic, that feeling will spread to the army. You must remember that.

It is a perfectly understandable reaction after a fight like that. But... we also gained knowledge we did not have before.

What knowledge is that?

Don't you remember? I told you Arcardo was rumored to be working with Bern.

Oh, that's right! If Bern's dragons are in an Eturian castle...

Arcardo has indeed made a deal with Bern.

...That means Lycia is in danger... We must return to the mainland. We have to contact General Cecilia and conceive a plan...

Lord Roy, before returning to the mainland, there is a matter to take care of.

More bandits?

No, thankfully. A legendary weapon is hidden in a cave not far from here. If we obtain it, we can fight the dragons more effectively.

A legendary weapon... You're right! If we can get all eight of them, we might have a chance of defeating Bern!

Yes... We must find as many as we can.

Then let's go to the cave and get it!

Geez, I wonder which one it could be.

I'm pretty sure Elphin is full of it. A cave without bandits? Such a thing does not exist. But I guess next time we'll find out who's right. Snappy closing statement!!
