Yeah, the security consoles will also just auto activate an alarm if they are destroyed. I've learned that the hard way from thinking I could bomb my way towards one and it suddenly setting off. Also I think after reviewing the video, that one mine somehow got set off when a hug bot that was propped against a door rolled backwards....which seriously scared the poo poo out of me. I will say though that it feels like mines are a lot easier to get away from with the speed upgrade. I'm kinda surprised that's even a separate upgrade.

Fat Samurai posted:

Swindle queston: Is there any way to trigger an alarm while hacking? So far I haven't upgraded my hacking speed and I haven't see any downsides (besides mines)

Fun game. I have just discovered how the metal slugs "attack".
I heartily recommend hacking speed either just because there will be a lot of times that you'll need to escape a search light or just get money quickly if an alarm is set off, and getting to cut your hack time in half is great way to get that additional money in a pinch and to get out quickly.

Also the metal slugs are the ones with the spines and spikes on their back, right? Cause if so, I had problem a similar case of learning how they attack as well.

So got some good news and bad news regarding my experience with this new patch. The good news is indeed the start of the game is much smoother and more manageable, and an overall fun experience. The ability to get the movement upgrades quicker is amazingly useful and allows me to spend more money of the more fun upgrades and move to new areas sooner; and just the increased money from the first couple of days is great. And honestly, it really shines through in the video (though in the end I don't really make any great progress outside of saving a few days and looking a bit more competent).

The bad news, and I'm not sure if it's just me, but something is super hosed up with wall grabbing. Sometimes my guy wouldn't grab onto walls, sometimes about half way up a wall it would decide to stop jumping or gripping onto walls, and just any number of problems. Seriously just had to scrap like four different recordings because I kept dying over and over to some unexplained wall shenanigans. I've seen a few people on the steam forums mention weird issues with blown up spike blocks still existing or like blown up blocks in general existing, so I'm hoping to get some feedback from the devs with what I ran into....though at this point it's kinda deterred me from playing more until it's fixed cause it just makes the game super frustrating.

Are you using an analog controller? I noticed yesterday that hitting down while on a wall causes you to let go, maybe that's new, but it's too sensitive?

I was mostly using the d-pad; like an example of where I think the game was bugging out was at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seLuyNYCZBY&t=22m45s. Cause I have no doubt that I should have been able to scale that wall.

VVVVV
I'm way less scared of mines now; I think that initial fear was just experimenting and not wanting to lose the sweet streak I was having.

Huh, I've not run into this, really weird that yoiu were unable to grab stuff.

Also please buy the remote detonator so you don't have to be scared of mines anymore!

Let's Play The Swindle- Part 3: Patchwork Orange (version 2)

Now normally I don't like to scrap things that are at least passable, but in retrospect I feel like this paints the game is a super negative light and honestly in the end I think I'll chalk this up to just human error and not an issue with the game. So humbly I offer a new and improved part 3 where good things happen and positivity reigns supreme.

Also the uber good news is that I do end this update with more than enough to get to the next area finally and while we could immediately go there, we're also doing massively good time wise and getting some upgrades might definitely help in the long run (especially if we can keep up these successful runs). So, do you guys want me to press forward or try to spend some more time getting powerful?

Also I hope Floodkiller doesn't mind updating the part 3 in the OP to this new video; I would greatly appreciate it :)

I vote Press on you'll surely get enough money (or die trying) in the next area with the XP bonus. You're doing exceptionally well, 90s and soon to be in the new area!

Also a tip for door hacking, if there is a patrolling enemy behind a hackable door just don't input anything on the last bad sector until they've patrolled far enough away. There is no penalty (as far as I've seen) for just waiting at the button prompt for door hacking.

Hmmm, well I'll still have 9,000 after unlocking the next area, so I could buy something else. And I just worry that I'll end up using the wall hang by accident when I don't mean to, that's mostly why I've been holding off on it.

Really I've been thinking about some new stuff that I personally haven't tried yet, like the EMP bomb thing seems possibly super useful or maybe the confusion. Cause the remote detonation proved to be amazingly useful.

Also was thinking about where the experience multiplier tops out at, cause a person could technically probably stay in the slums to grind out simple amounts of money and with the ghost bonus and the experience bonus....it might be good money? I can probably test that out at work in my off time since the game doesn't have cloud saving and it won't mess up my other save.

Of small note to anyone trying to follow along, there's a reason the game specifically told you the notes of the music that praying invoked; it's used as a randomized passcode to a special level called The Castle later on, as memory serves.

There are several ways to get the passcode in a given game, but it's usually a moot point since you can just play Mastermind with the gate and just guess and puzzle your way to the code. Between that and the fact that Sokoban allows you to cheat (it does punish you for it, mind, with luck penalties), Nethack is almost unusually forgiving when it comes to its scant few 'puzzle' elements. The biggest and meanest 'puzzle' is probably just how to proceed once you've hit the absolute bottom floor of the dungeon.

I kind of feel that confusion and the EMP are more useful in the Casino area onwards, although if you have troubles with too many enemies in the Belgravia area then confusion helps even the odds.

SPACE FACE! SPACE FACE!

I have basically never used the musical cue on the castle gate, my preferred approach is to float around to the backdoor, take care of the dragons, kick down the barracks doors and polypile the hell out of the results.

Also I believe wizard locked doors can be smashed open by monsters that can destroy doors (giants, dragons, etc.) so they're not a 100% barrier to monsters. Xorns, moles, etc. obviously don't have to worry about them either.

Gauntlets of power would solve your carrying problem (for a bit of spellcasting failure), and doubles as not being a good use of a wish in case you were playing on one of the online servers and wanted to piss off the IRC.
