the Ballers/The Brink thread. Both shows are good, loved the ending of The Brink. The Navy guys sub plot is kinda weird but has its moments. Hopefully it eventually ties in somehow...

For the last 2 episodes, Reggie hasn't really been Joffrey enough to hatewatch. He is just an annoying side character right now. I hope he pulls something and gets back to form soon.

Having said that, watching on HBO Now, it'd be nice if they'd put the chapter marks right at the end of the opening.

Was there any point to introducing Jason the agent's mother's relationship with a younger man trying to get into pro golf? The show is so short already - 25 minutes per week including the intro credits. These scenes didn't add much comedy or drama, and pushed out some already ongoing storylines like the MRI scan results, and Spencer meeting the 'blackmailer'. In this football-based series starring Dwayne Johnson, are we really supposed to care about this mom and her non-football-playing boyfriend.

One of the big criticisms of Entourage, especially the early seasons, was that Vince was the only person who had any real character development, and arguably Ari. In later seasons the other characters got fleshed out but early on it was definitely the Vince and Ari show, oh and some other guys. Personally, I think the pictures, the MRI, the golf thing, etc. are all attempts to mitigate that criticism from coming up again. HBO knows exactly what worked and what didn't in Entourage, and they're trying to improve on the formula.

I found the whole business with the agent's mom screwing the young loser to be a generally unpleasant derail that seems to serve no purpose. They don't seem to have figured out what role the agent character really fills on the show yet.

I wonder if the shake up to the status quo at the season's end is Rock& Rob having to start from scratch after getting canned, then taking on clients of ALL spurts backgrounds.

This would actually make for a pretty interesting place for the show to go. The preview for the new episode looks like Rob might be lost to the show (canned), I hope not, he's hilarious and has great chemistry with Rock. I hope it's something more along the lines of what you've described.

Either that or they will talk the agent guy into letting them sign that average golfer (who's banging his mum), just so they can keep their jobs at Anderson.

If they ended Ballers at 8 it would pretty much be a season where nothing happened. It might be that anyway, but at least they've established the characters enough to make the final three episodes have some impact.

Oz and Entourage had 8 episode seasons with a weird 16 episode arc for season 4. Both went back to the 8 episode format until season 6. Then Entourage did 10 episode seasons in 7 & 8. Sex and the City are all over the place season to season. Sopranos did 13 episodes from season 1 - 5, and then 21 episodes in season 6.
