So, I think I found a Nethack tileset I really like. I guess somebody posted it to Reddit in April-ish, uses open source tiles. The smallest size available was 32x, which drove me crazy because the whole thing wouldn't fit on one screen(which is how Nethack seems to have been intended, just an aesthetics thing), and fitting it to the window looked like poo poo (as should any tile going from x/x to x/y) so I made a 24x24 version by using the power of paint.net and a calculator. This was a quick and dirty hackjob, so I'm sure I could get higher quality or something, but it doesn't make my eyes bleed.

Gonna want to rename the sheet to Nethack Modern 24x.bmp and drop it into the Nethack folder.

Then open the defaults file with Notepad or similar and add this line anywhere after ***Options***

OPTIONS=tile_file:Nethack Modern 24x.bmp,tile_width=24,tile_height=24

I really, really like the power curve in the game. Each time you survive a higher difficulty you find yourself swimming in cash, and each upgrade makes you way more competent than before. Then the game introduces a new enemy and you die anyway.

EDIT: I find hacking level 3 pretty useful. Shutting down drones, cameras and secure computers is great if you're trying to ghost the level.

The hacking upgrade and the associated security goggle display. Disabling all the cameras/locked computers/drones in a level is totally worth it.

Hack Lvl 3. Disabling security consoles removes the secured console statuses and also disables flying drones and security lights, and the upgrade to show where the security stations are helps make it easier to find them.

Really required tbh, that stuff gets so common it's a nightmare to deal with if you don't disable it.

I tried out Hacking Aptitude [bought it right to 2] just a bit ago, and it was roughly +50% to the benefits of Hacking [but not loose cash pickups] at rank 2 aptitude, so made up after about 60k total heisting, and then profit from there on out.

The bonus cash appears as the Aptitude bonus, so it was roughly +25%, meaning it's made up after 40k alone [10,000/0.25], and then the rank 2 made up after 80k more [20,000/.25, 80k]. But if you buy them both at once, it's a 30k investment to get +50% cash, making it take only 60k. So, faster if you buy them together.

Hmmm, I wonder if that affects the money from the bugs at all or if those are just a flat percentage of what would normally be in the computer.

Both those sound pretty reasonable to get; and I think that'll still leave me with like 40K. So I'm wondering if I should just save up for other high tier stuff or try to get some of the cheaper stuff, like melee damage increase and 'action hero' (since apparently that's super useful for smashing through windows).

I definitely find that to be the case, especially trying the early game over and over again. It's so easy to blow up a mine and realize at the last second that an enemy is rushing in or think that you have enough room to bomb a wall without hitting a security console...except it's not the case. I mean, things do feel easier and 'safer', but I think it's because I'm trying to be super careful and to remember to use my tools. It's easy to fall into the old mindset of 'Welp, how am I going to walk straight into this and live'.

Also it's fun to watch other video LP's people are doing, because they enter into New Belgravia on loving day 50 or something, and it looks so hard for them.

Melee damage makes you blast windows out quicker. But action hero is pretty cheap to go along with it. The wall stop upgrade is also incredibly handy since you just have to get above the door tile and you can bop anything that walks under you, so you don't have to mess with timing nearly as much. I would definately grab it after level 3 hacking and the security console finder.

Also I was reading through the Steam thread and it's odd to me that the overall response in there is pretty negative for The Swindle. A lot of complaints about the level design getting them locked into 'unwinnable' situations and I'm not sure I totally understand. Like I've gone through level after level and played for like 8 hours at this point, and the only time I've ever ran into a situation like this is because I've bombed myself into a hole. I don't know; for you guys in here that have played the game, have you run into similar situations? Or just run into a situation where you just have no other choice than to go into a purposely bad situation (like a guard next to a window on a single tile facing outside). Maybe it's just cause I'm having fun with it that these complaints are lost on me.

Yeah, I suppose the drawback to 'action hero' is that you need a running start? I didn't mess with it that much since it seemed a bit gimmicky.

I would assume they're talking about isolated spots they can't get to without bombs in the first few days when you don't have them. If I ever run into a spot that looks harsh to break into I usually just skip it and find another entry point on the building - the game is pretty generous about providing them all over the place. The game is friendly enough about that that it doesn't kill your heist streak.

I have not bothered with action hero largely, as it doesn't seem very worthwhile since there's not a lot of spots where crashing through a window or door will really help.

Nah, you just press Y and go through the window, no questions asked. Useful if you are really pressed for time to bop a guard, but not vital. On the other hand, it's only 4k, and it's a QoL upgrade.

Melee damage makes everything more bearable especially when hitting the next area so go for it!

Another thing to save up for is the hacking level that allows you to activate downed drones. Some of them can be helpful.

Pretty much; it allows you to bash in windows to possibly kill robutts, smash in through skylights to kill robutts, or smash through windows. Sadly though I don't think it triggers kick rear end slowdown every time.

It'll probably be a cheaper alternative to smashing in windows quicker than smacking windows with my baby billy club (like increased melee is 30K and action hero is only 4K).

Also super stoked that one more successful heist will put me into the next area....which may or may not have explosive baby zeppelins that react to sound.

E: Shock/Sanity is a neat pacing mechanic. Time spent on a level raises shock, as does other spooky poo poo. Every time shock gets to 100% it resets and Sanity goes up. The higher the Sanity % the more likely you are to get bad mental poo poo. 100% is game over. Diving to the next floor resets your shock meter.

E2: the fighter class, War Veteran, starts with 10% sanity already because WWI was awful.
