Either reinstall first using Windows 8 or just buy a copy of Windows 10. Buying it seems like a simpler solution because I'm bound to reinstall down the road and it will just go faster. You only have to do the upgrade once, so both options should be equally fast in the future.

How do I get rid of the nag to update to Windows 10? I reverted back to 8.1 and that apparently doesn't tip them of at all that they should shut up about upgrading. The instructions I googled up didn't work. I'd like to kill it on my Windows 7 computer too.

Question-that-might-have-been-asked-a-billion-times: I plan on building a new PC, can I use the upgrade lined up for my current PC to get a Windows 10 ISO on a usb drive that I can use to do a fresh install of Win10 on that new PC? Or do I have to buy a separate copy of windows?

Build a new PC, install windows 7/8.1, upgrade that to 10 and then you can do a clean 10 install. Before July 29 2016 of course.

You don't need the upgrade offer to make an iso - just download the tool to make a usb then when you get the PC, install your current Windows on there, authenticate it as usual, then plug in your usb and do an upgrade.

To my knowledge, since you're building a new machine, your only path to an activated Windows 10 is through the upgrade. The upgrade has to be done on the machine in question, so you have to install a previous Windows on it. If you can't fit an optical drive in there then you'll have to source/make an iso to put on usb for that as well. You can't upgrade your current machine then 'move' the license to a new machine because there's nothing to move except a database entry on Microsoft's servers.

Is there a reason that every once in a while (seemingly non-deterministically) the Search functionality from the start menu gets broken and I get absolutely no results for valid application names; I just get some dots animating from left to right. This is with No cortana and no web search. And it non-deterministically gets fixed after a logout/login or a restart. I am guessing that there is something wrong with the indexing service....

Related to Search, I have a problem that I've submitted to feedback: Randomly the keyboard won't work. It's pretty irritating to Win-Key + "type search" + Enter and have the last step not work. The only way to launch is to click the result with your mouse. It does seem to correct itself after a reboot which of course is stupid.

Its a pain when you click all apps that you cant just type a letter and have it go to that letter instead of scrolling through the entire alphabet.

The start menu is buggy as hell. I guess really not much Microsoft did for Windows 10 is stable or even really usable. Random metro apps have stopped working on mine. The Start key on the keyboard doesn't bring up the menu. The mail app takes nearly an hour to download new messages from google. No real working drag and drop to the taskbar and/or start menu. Incredibly unimpressive.

The changes they made to the Start Menu between 8 and 10 are all good, and it's honestly close enough to the Start Menu I need that I'd probably be happy using it... If it worked reliably. I've gone back to using a Start Menu replacement (Start10) just like I did in 8, for most of the reasons you guys have already said. It's slow, sometimes doesn't come up, sometimes won't complete a search, sometimes doesn't find what I need it to, etc...

But you can't type a letter once you pull up the alphabet picker that way, so too bad if you want to use a keyboard.  It was an insider mission thing last week, but I'm not using preview builds, so I think it's just a hidden feature.

I'm afraid of jinxing it but installing a video card seems to have fixed my video watching problem. I had six videos going in two browsers with no sound stuttering and no freezing.

Edge gets extensions in November. As far as I'm aware the Edge API is going to be as close as possible to Chrome's API so when it's released porting stuff should be really easy.

Flash and JavaScript ads are pretty much the way people get infected with bitcoin miners or CryptoLocker, or get social-engineered by Robert Hackerman at the Office of Password Management or by people saying iPhone Antivirus is out of date or oh no someone's planted Bad poo poo on your computer hit this to get rid of it or whatever. No one seems interested in cleaning up the ads, not even actual you'd-think-they-do-due-diligence ad services like from Google or Microsoft. You can drop Flash without much effect these days, aside from unfortunate things like your local jury duty's online orientation only using flash videos, LA COUNTY COURT (unless you play Facebook games or something, in which case you idiot) but thanks to HTML5 and web apps becoming a thing dropping JavaScript pretty much costs you the Web so you need something else to intercept the ads. Hence ad-block.

Security aside most websites are an assault on the eyes with ads The few times I have to go without I'm amazed anyone can deal with all that poo poo. It makes the internet an unpleasant experience

The post above pretty much answered the security side. There's also things like metered connections and ads choking up low powered mobile devices which is definitely a thing for some Win10 devices. I recently started using the Clean Links addin for firefox. For the tinfoil hat crew it is anti-tracking, but mainly the web feels so much smoother when your google results go directly to the page and not via an intermediate page that then refreshes to the one you wanted.

A lot of sites and detect if you're using adblock these days and offer you the option to pay a one time fee to offset your usage costs (like, $5 here on SA or OKCupid) or a monthly fee (fark.com is $5 a month) Given the one time option, if I visit the site more than twice a month I usually pay it. I don't pay/sign up for the perpetual monthly payment because I try and avoid those kinds of subscription costs.

Yeah actually my reason to pay for the no ads option on SA was that I used to work the very slow 12 hour night shift and they didn't really care what I browsed (including the forums) but I was concerned that some of the ads that SA was serving at the time could get flagged as porn and it's kind of hard to get promoted when IT security keeps emailing your boss about false positives for their porno scanner. I guess I could have just stopped browsing SA at work but  That $5 has gone a long ways in 4 years, no regrets.

Um why is facebook being unreadable? It's been like this since I installed it (and reinstalled a few times) on a new laptop I bought a couple weeks ago. On a related note, why is some stuff blurry? For example some text in Edge shows up slightly fuzzy and some pop-up windows from various apps exhibit the same thing. Can't get a screenshot of the text issues, but here's facebook: (red lines to protect the innocent)  For reference, screen is set to 1920*1080 on a 15.6" laptop

But it is a good idea to go online first and download your motherboard drivers on the USB you use to install Windows or a secondary/backup drive if you're upgrading to a newer motherboard. I learned that the hard way yesterday when I upgraded to a shiny new ASUS Maximus VIII Gene and my ethernet driver was missing. Kinda impossible to go online at that point and without an optical drive the DVD was useless. They should give you tiny flash drives instead.
