We just got a package in from La Couronne du Comte with all 10 Diamine Shimmertastic inks -- they are selling them as a set for 82 Euro. I have never used one of the J. Herbin particle inks but I thought I'd give these a try. I tried Blue Pearl (dark blue with silver) and Night Sky (black with silver). I like them both; the blue is amazing in sunlight, and after I get the nib replaced in my blue-black Lamy Scala I'm going to have to try it in that.

I'm not seeing a lot of gold particles in my sample of Rouge Hematite or whatever the blue one is. I'm using a Konrad with a Goulet Broad Nib and an Ahab with a Goulet 1.1 italic. They both write pretty wet and I've tried writing slowly. I have been writing mostly on index cards so maybe better paper would make a difference? Other than the lack of metallic particles, I've been really happy with the ink and nibs.

Did you shake it up really well? Alternately with it being a sample whoever decanted it might not have shaken it enough. They settle really fast, so if I want to see lots of sparkles I have to shake up the bottle then fill my pen quickly or all the particles just end up back at the bottom of the bottle.

Re: rouge hemetite, there's also some formulations that had less sparkles after the very first one caused a lot of thinking. The current formulation should have plenty of glitter though. And yessss seconding Fuyu-gaki if you like your reds more on the orange side. Also Noodler's Nikita is pretty rad for a fairly true red.

I was recently gifted a Lamy AL-Star; I'm usually a pencil guy because a lifetime of Bic Cristals has given me a strong dislike for pens and blue ink. But this thing feels like heaven on the page and comes with a gorgeous, gorgeous blue. I think I'm converted. I'm a big fan of writing everything by hand, and I thought this new pen might be an excuse to take this interest further. How do I go about getting started on some basic calligraphy or just serious handwriting in general? (Is there such a thing as serious handwriting?)

Some people have strong opinions on whether they prefer to shake pens that are posted or unposted, but I think either is fine. Be sure you clean up thoroughly afterwards, though. Wouldn't want to stain anything.

Toady, while writing with my Pilot Metro, the nib almost fell out. I could push the nib and that black thing below it (feed?) back into the pen. It seems solid now, there is ink on my fingers, colleagues pretend they don't notice. I want to order all the DIamine shimmer inks. Someone here ordered the lot, how are they in real life?

The nib and feed in the Metro are friction fit so they can, on occasion, come out of place. I'd suggest taking it out and giving the section, nib and feed a good wash when you have a chance just to make sure there isn't some dried ink that's messing up the fit. Also if anyone is interested in getting an entry level gold-nibbed Japanese made pen there's a seller on Amazon selling the Pilot FK-700R ("Custom") for under $50 in EF, M and B. They also have a FCM-500R ("Seremo") for $32. Those prices are goddamned steals for solid 14k nibs from a well-respected manufacturer. A lot of folks buy up a Jinhao/Bulow pen for like $2 then go get a good #6 flex/caligraphy nib and swap nibs. Could net you a decent writer for under 20bux depending on nib costs.

Only flex you're gonna get in that price range is Noodler's. Otherwise I'd just look into something with an italic nib in that range if you want to fancy up the writing-- I like TWSBI but there's valid reasons to go elsewhere.

Well, there are a few other options than Noodler's for flex under $50. Some Indian made pens from Fountain Pen Revolution like a FPR Dilli or Serwex 1362 with a flex nib upgrade may work. Here's the thing with cheap flex pens - you may have to work on them to get them writing properly. In the case of Noodler's you may have to do a lot of work to get them writing. The Indian made pens are apparently a little better in this regard, but if you're not comfortable tinkering with fountain pens you'll probably want to avoid cheap flex pens for now. As for calligraphy pens, you have a lot more choices. A solid low end option would be with a Pilot Plumix. It comes with a .95mm Italic nib and is quite a decent writing pen but the body is in the style of old-fashioned calligraphy pens and not really portable. That said, you can pull out the nib and feed and exchange it with a Pilot Kakuno or Metropolitan and still be under your budget. The nib and feed portions are fully interchangeable and it's literally a case of sliding them out of one pen and sliding them in another. There's also the Nemosine pens, and you can get 0.6mm and 0.8mm Stub nibs as options for the Singularity (acrylic body, lighter and cheaper) or Fission (metal body, heavier, more expensive). You need to be a little delicate with the Singularity as the cap has a habit of cracking if you tighten it too much. You can get a TWSBI Eco with a 1.1MM stub. It's a piston fill pen and thus you can only use it with bottled ink. Their customer service is supposedly excellent which is good because they've been plagued by manufacturing problems over the last few years. If you live in a country where one of the owner of TWSBI's sons has been deployed to mail out spare parts, then go nuts. Otherwise, expect to pay quite a bit in international postage over the pen's life to replace cracked parts.
