I'm still annoyed that they didn't go with an interpretation of Reimu's Yin-yang Orbs being used as Funnels or Bits.

I mean, that's basically how she uses them in her IN Last Word.

~Perfect and Elegant~
Hi, Golden Battler here. I'll be the one doing the source material comparison since Blitz doesn't feel like rereading Silent Sinner in Blue. Speaking of, SSiB was also created alongside two companion pieces: Cage in Lunatic Runagate, a light novel; and a 4-koma comedy stripp called Inaba of the Moon and Inaba of the Earth. I've never bothered with the latter since I don't like 4-komas and I didn't feel like re-reading CiLR so this won't really cover those. The only thing I really remember being important from CiLR is that there's a scene about Mokou worrying if Kaguya is going to leave her behind which is super adorable.

Anyway, the tl;dr version is that FMW's version of SSiB is almost completely different from the source. The basic framework is there, kindasorta, but even by FMW's standards the plot, motivations, and background events are all altered by significant degrees to fit with their own canon.

One thing they didn't miss was setting the story up with Yukari training Reimu. FMW has Suika helping out too, but that's not a big deal. Interestingly, they both set this up months in advance - canonically the story starts pre-MoF and then picks up a few months post-MoF, where-as FMW places this scene before IN. (As a completely personal aside, I called SSiB happening in FMW3 from the demo because I was apparently the only one who recognized this scene from SSiB).

Despite SSiB taking place shortly after MoF, none of the characters from it really show up or do anything. At most they make a cameo appearance, and Reimu makes a few passing mentions of being annoyed with how many decidedly-not-youkai enemies she's been facing lately. This should come as no surprise, but every scene you see involving any post-MoF characters is a complete fabrication (but then again, so is almost every scene in this arc).

One big difference is who the instigators of the plot is. In FMW they are basically just helping Rabbit get home and delivering a letter for Eirin in the meanwhile. In SSiB, it is essentially one giant chess game Yukari is playing to get back at the Lunarians for owning her a thousand years ago.

The two other big players are the SDM and Yuyuko. Ran initially tried to invite Remilia to join in on the Second Lunar War, but she declines and then decides to go to the moon herself because she thinks it would be funny (naturally, this is exactly what Yukari wants her to do). Yuyuko initially claims to have no interest in it, but is mostly just being overly enigmatic, and in fact sees through almost every part Yukari's plan at every step. She still winds up doing (almost) exactly what Yukari wants without being told, but unlike Remilia she knows exactly what the score is the whole time.

Now then, let's get onto the absolutely biggest change...

It's our good friend Rabbit! Her role in the story is almost completely different. At first her unconscious (and stealthily disguised) rear end is found after crashing to earth by Reimu, whose interest in helping her is largely contained to the pretty robe she's got on her. Rabbit pretty promptly fucks off after waking up, and then runs into the real person she's looking for.

Unlike in FMW, Eirin isn't trying to hide out or be discreet since IN has already happened, so she actually notices Rabbit's descent to earth and meets with her. Rabbit tries to pull her whole defection shtick, but Eirin pretty much immediately shuts her down and tells her to go deliver a letter to the Watatsuki sisters. As long as rabbit explains that she was doing it for their beloved Master, the Watatsukis shouldn't punish her, and indeed, upon thinking about it, Rabbit probably wasn't wholeheartedly interested in living on Earth.

There are some ties to real world events like the chinese lunar expedition named after Chang'e (who is basically just Chinese Kaguya, although in touhouland they are different characters, and in fact Chang'e is tangentially responsible for Legacy of Lunar Kingdom via Junko and Hecatia hating her). They sorta imply some political manuevering and stuff but who cares, the gist of it is that a lot of lunarian dudes suspect Eirin of bad poo poo, and by association they suspect the Watatsuki's too. Eirin also happens to be aware of Yukari's plot (and Remilia's too) and decides to take advantage of them and Rabbit to help her former pupils out. Thus, she sends them a letter that basically tells them what's going to happen for the next 15 chapters.

Rabbit gets sent back to the moon via her Trans-Lunar Transportation Robe (though not before Eirin snags a piece of it for later) and basically stops existing in the story. No bumbling, no getting capture, no letter mishaps, no accidentally-causing-the-plot-of-Imperishable-Night. She delivers the letter, gets adopted by the Watatsuki's and dubbed Reisen (in katakana), is tossed to her new soldier friends, and that's it. I don't think she has a single appearance past, like, the start of chapter 8.

Yep. That's pretty much it. I'll take a quick sidenote here to mention that Yorihime isn't nearly as much of a hardass as she is in FMW. She's still a bit on the serious side, but she has plenty of soft moments like this, and has a few smug/boastful moments too.

Some chapters pass with the team trying to figure out how the gently caress to make a rocket, and they more-or-less come upon the same gods Sumiyoshi gods plan, although Youmu is the one that gives them the hint (after Yuyuko told her to). Naturally, UFO hasn't happened yet, so Patchouli makes that janky looking piece of poo poo, which apparently is actually fantastic for making it to a fantasy land on the dark side of the moon. Just to make sure they succeed though, Eirin sneaks a piece of Rabbits robe onto the ship, and also (through Marisa) gives the three stages of the rocket appropriate names to help... make them more appropriate for the gods or something like that. Patchouli sees through it all, of course, but doesn't really give a poo poo.

Anyway, Reimu, Marisa, Remilia, Sakuya, and 3 random maid fairies all make the trip and eventually crash land near the Sea of Tranquility on the moon. As you might expect, anyone other than the people I mentioned doesn't actually do anything, so you can count their scenes as FMW's invention. This is where poo poo mostly starts to line up between FMW and SSiB so I'll keep it brief.

They get kindasorta captured by Yorihime, who questions what the gently caress they're doing on the moon. Unlike in FMW where they actually had a good reason, here their plan is essentially "wait, what are we doing here anyway?". Remilia decides on the spot that she wants to take over the moon, but on the side Marisa smooths things uot by pointing out that Remilia is the only one who cares about that, and luckily this isn't FMW Yorihime so she actually believes her - though that still doesn't change the fact that they invaded the moon. Thus, Marisa comes up with a simple plan:

She introduces them to spellcard battles, and challenges them. (Side note: Lunar Rabbits being over 3x as strong as average fairies is canon). I'll spare you the details, but Sakuya, Marisa, and then Remilia all fight her in sequence and get owned. Reimu isn't very motivated since she rightfully points out that they're technically the ones causing an Incident here, but decides to pull a trick out of her sleeve anyway.

Reimu knows how much the Lunarians hate Impurity, so she basically throws some bullshit curses around and says "gently caress off or I'll irradiate you". What happens next is mostly conducted offscreen, but basically, Yorihime sends everyone but Reimu home, and then has Reimu go around the Lunar capital for a couple weeks showing off that she can summon gods. Apparently proving that there are other people that can summon gods is enough to prove to the public that Yorihime isn't up to no good. (I think this is elaborated on in CiLR a bit but I don't care and it isn't important to FMW3 at all).

Yukari tries to use the SDM team as a diversion to sneak into the Lunarian capital and steal their poo poo, but apparently gets looped back around into Gensokyo by a neat portal trick Eirin set up. I also forgot that Reisen 2 actually does show up again in this one panel here. Anyway it doesn't matter, becuase despite Yukari acting all defeated and mad and stuff the whole thing is a double-bluff. (Fun side note: the femtofiber rope Yorihime flubs the explanation of was actually used by Toyohime here)

Yukari left open another gap for Yuyuko (the one with her sleeve that she left hanging through it), who she knew would get involved of her own accord (which Yuyuko knew Yukari was expecting because Yuyuko's whole gimmick is seeing through every plot instantly). Apparently ghosts don't have the Impurity of life, so they're basically invisible to Lunarians or something, so they just Tactical Stealth Action around the moon for a month or two until Yukari sneaks em back out. Of course, Yuyuko was able to Solid Snake her way into the Watatsuki's treasure room, and steal some precious treasure.

And what treasure did Yuyuko decide to steal, after the months and months of plotting and scheming that Yukari bothered to go through...?

Naturally, it's booze :v:

Anyway, Reimu and co got back to Earth safely and have an indoors beach party, Yukari's team enjoy their spoils, and the Watatsukis got owned. And they all lived happily ever after. Until Junko decides to launch dirty bombs at them and they have to sneak the lunar capital into the dream world while plotting to genocide Gensokyo so they can move in to hide.

Some side notes that might get added on to as people yell at me:
-Yorihime doesn't actually summon Takemikazuchi or Hi no Kagutsuchi in the manga, although she does summon quite the pantheon. The depiction of Amaterasu is manga accurate though.

Pureauthor posted:

There's one last step in Yukari's grand plan that only gets shown on in CiLR:

Yukari invites Eirin to the 'beach' party at the end of SSiB and serves her the Lunarian sake, which Eirin recognizes immediately. Eirin is baffled because by all accounts both Remilia and Yukari were sent packing immediately and had no opportunity to grab anything like that. The narration then says that since Eirin and Kaguya had chosen to live 'as humans' in Gensoukyou, Yukari felt she needed to teach them to be wary and cautious of Youkai, because after all that's the role of humans who dwell in there.

Meanwhile FMW just has Eirin, Yuyuko and Yukari start warming up to each other and becoming buddies after Eirin makes clear her decision to stay on Earth.

The "Silent Sinner in Blue" in the title? It's Yuyuko. :v:

"Inaba of the Moon and Inaba of the Earth" happens after SSiB and CiLR, and is pretty much just a bunch of slice-of-life stories about the moon crew. It's pretty notable for fleshing out their personalities, particularly in the Watatsukis' case. In the main two works they're fighting off invaders so they're kind of jerks, but around friends they're much goofier. It'll probably be covered in FMW4 as an excuse to get the Watatsukis and Rabbit to join.

I mentioned in the IN wrap-up that it's super important that Rabbit lied about being chased. This is because among other things, Bougetsushou completely retcons Reisen's backstory. Remember how she supposedly fled from a Earthling-Lunarian war? And how IN started because the moon was trying to call her back to fight in another? Yeah well when Remilia's entourage makes it up to the moon, they find out that it's never been invaded. All the Lunarians actually freaked out over was the American flag being planted, and later it disappearing (I missed a bonus convo in 46 that details it, but the American flag at the launch site was found by the Three Fairies after it vanished from the moon because people started doubting the 1969 moon landing).

So basically the only way that makes sense in context of Reisen's backstory is if a) she actually ran away out of pure nervous fright and b) the rabbits on the moon were lying their asses off about the second invasion. And indeed, Rabbit was completely lying.

By the way, Touhou 15 Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom retcons the whole moon situation again, and completely fucks with FMW's adaption of SSiB. Such are the woes of adapting an ongoing plot.

The Watatsukis are also pretty fond of humans, too. Their chapter of CiLR is about some human getting spirited away to the moon forever ago when Eirin was still around there, and the sisters hiding him because the Lunarians would basically kill because of the whole impurity thing, so they keep him like a guest or even a pet. Until he says he wants to go home anyway, at which point they just come fretting to Eirin who simply suggests killing him much to the chagrin of the sisters, but then helps them out anyway and comes up with a plan about tricking the human into thinking he's in the Ocean Dragon Palace and not the moon, sends him like three hundred years into earth's future so none of his friends and family are alive to believe him, and then gives him some medicine that'll turn him into an old guy (and reduces his life expectancy to less than a year) so other humans will think he's a wise old sage instead a young, crazy loon.

I kinda get the impression FWM Yorihime would have less compunctions about killing a human.

Unrelated to that Mokou's chapter is pretty much the only one unrelated to the events of SSiB if only because she wasn't around for them. Also it features her killing a dude in cold blood pre-immortality just because she hated Kaguya that much.

I really hate this misconception. Mokou honestly didn't even care about Kaguya by that point (she certainly wasn't on her mind after the whole hike up the mountain). She killed a man in cold blood simply because she wanted the elixir of immortality. Because, y'know, that kind of thing sounds kind of cool to most living humans. It was just greed, pure and simple. Like, her monologue has her consider doing it for her original reasons, decide that she couldn't go through with it, and then she gets entranced by the magic word "immortality".

I mean, that's one thing FMW played completely canonically: Mokou doesn't really hate Kaguya all that much and never has.

She was an angsty teenager who ran away from home to steal Kaguya's gift, but by the time she'd climbed the mountain with Iwakasa, she seems to have changed her mind. The whole thing is written like she calmed down a lot during that time, and formed a pretty close bond with him. Before killing him for immortality, but you know how that goes. Honestly, I'd say he's more important to her than Kaguya is, and she named two of her spellcards after him ("Curse of Iwakasa" and "Honest Man's Death").

SyntheticPolygon
Dec 20, 2013

I thought Mokou's deal was trying to steal the elixir for revenge against Kaguya, then getting caught and ending up travelling with the dude's trying to get rid of it. Everyone ends up giving into the temptation of immortality and killing each other, with Mokou and Iwakasa being the only survivors. Then she ends up giving into temptation anyway and decides to steal it like she originally planned but she accidentally kills Iwakasa by pushing him down the mountain when she just wanted to get the elixir from him, which she hella regrets because she was friends with the guy and didn't want him to die.

So it's still greed for immortality that caused her to steal the potion but part of her motivation was getting back at Kaguya for insulting her Dad that one time. She then nurses this pointless grudge for hundreds of years because she had nothing better to do. Though by the time Mokou and Kaguya meet again they just kill each other forever to get catharsis or out of boredom respectively, which ends up being pretty good for the both of them. If anything from her CiLR chapter Mokou appears to just appreciate Kaguya for being around and giving her something to do. Since most of her immortal life was just her regretting the hell out of it, because it was honestly a tremendously bad idea.

Mokou's story in Urban Legend in Limbo starts with her basically going "Wait, one of these orbs could maybe let me die forever. Hell yes." Mokou's regretted the whole immortality thing pretty much ever since she got it.

Also Cage in Lunatic Runagate's Chapter 4 is my favorite thing ZUN ever wrote, it's really good, and entirely unrelated to the rest of CiLR so you can just read it and be cool with it.

The chapter is actually structured so that if you play it legitimately and attempt to escape, all of the reinforcements should hit just as you make it to within spitting distance of the bonus line. Then Yorihime should catch up, and the last two or three turns are just a complete clusterfuck.

Anyway, Reimu. After completing chapter 49, Reimu learns this. Fantasy Nature makes it so that when Reimu hits 150 Power, she'll gain a new command. Let's wait till she gets there so I can show you what I mean.

Reimu's got a Genji conversation with her name all over it, so I have her solo the northeast front.

Oh come on! Just when the hot spring finally brings people over, you all show up and ruin everything!

I'm exterminating every last one of you!

She won't have much trouble with it.

There's no way I can relax in the bath in this situation.

Then again, so many people came that it's not like it was very calm in the first place... To be honest, I was feeling a little awkward.

Magic Team sets their sights on the larger spirit in the northwest, but don't make much headway. It's actually landed so it's getting a +15% defense boost from the trees.

Speaking of larger spirits, if Eirin casts Snipe she can just barely reach this one from her starting position.

I should have no trouble stopping the movements of enemies as weak as this.

We're all relying on you, Master!

But Master, isn't this finally a good time to show off your skills as a doctor too?

Of course. Healing and Renewing are my specialities. If anyone is wounded or exhausted, they should come to my side.

Sadly, despite her incredible range of attack Eirin doesn't start with Ignore Distance.

But that's fine, Reisen and Youmu are on the case.

Here's a decent example of how this team works. If Youmu tries to attack this spirit, even if she casts Focus she's looking at a 33% chance of getting hit.

But Reisen is naturally more evasive, so with Focus on she can get much higher evade rates.

...So I'm up against vengeful spirits again, huh? These guys are easy to shoot dow-

Go, go Reisen!

She's the strongest person in the House of Eternity! She said so herself earlier!

Wha- What are you saying in front of Master?!

The strongest...? Now just what could this be all about?

It's, it's nothing! I can't believe I said something like that...

You made a pretty big show earlier. There's no point pretending you don't know.

So this is the person who really holds all the power in the House of Eternity, hm?

Stoooop! I-I'm begging you here!

They can't finish the spirit off, but Reisen has a much better chance of making it through enemy phase unscathed. Once she does I can switch to Youmu and cut that spirit to pieces.

Down to the south, Momiji makes uses one of her less noteworthy gimmicks: she has Snipe.

It's not very useful most of the time, but in this case it lets her hit this red spirit. Normally she'd only be able to reach the blues, which would make her attack pointless since the red spirit has Support Defend.

Of course normally I would just have Aya cast Accel but I didn't get Tengu Team so what can you do.

To think these vengeful spirits intruded on my watch...

I should have been keeping an eye on the other bath to prepare for situations like this!

I... I think that might be going a little too far.

Why? It would keep you safe.

M-Maybe, but staring like that would be sort of...

?

Music: Observe, White Wolf!

One of the annoying things about Momiji is how reliant she is on Shield Defense. I figured she'd failed to trigger it, so I had her cast Guard. But between Strike and Valor, she really doesn't have the SP to spare.

But then, this is a short chapter so it's fine to blow my SP load early.

If we leave these vengeful spirits as they are, the shrine will be in great danger!

I was going to change out the water of the hot spring and wash out the bathtubs after this, too...

This is the Hakurei shrine's hot spring, so shouldn't Reimu do that?

But, earlier I was just relaxing so I didn't help out with clearing away the snow.

...I'm glad that Sanae's such a good girl but... to think she'd take all this work upon herself.

Ever since she came back from the moon, she's been going over to sweep the leaves too.

I was hoping Valor + Hermit Purple could punch through the size penalty, but alas this large spirit is just too bulky.

...These vengeful spirits, too, are furious that autumn has been stolen away...

I understand your feelings, but we're going to bury you in the ground like fertilizer for a field!

Oh, are you two better now?

I think they got so sad they looped back around.

I'm kind of worried...

Aaaah, thanks to that hot spring my stiff shoulders feel much better now.

That's a bold statement considering how little you work.

But haven't YOUR usual strains gone away too?

True enough. I stand all the time for my job, so my legs were quite sore... I might come again by myself some day.

Then I'll go with you!

We changed our clothes so fast, they're still kinda wet.

So even a ship ghost can feel like that.

You're kind of blunt every now and then.

Now that I think about it, did being in a hot spring make you think about drowning someone?

Well, I did kind of feel like dragging someone down by their feet. But if I did something like that, I wouldn't be able to face Hijiri.

I see. I guess you had nothing to do with the people falling over in the bath then.

Oh, well...

...Huh?!

I never would have expected to see vengeful spirits gushing out of a hot spring. Coming to the shrine was well worth the effort.

You're as relaxed as always. Is there anything that can surprise you?

Now that I think about it, you're a princess but you were ready to take a bath with all of us.

This too is one of the charms of the Earth. I even took great care to bundle up my hair properly.

Well, that was the Master's handiwork though.

Something like that takes no time at all. Ah, you've just changed your clothes so be careful not to get them dirty.

No need to worry. I have no intention of giving something like those the privilege of touching me.

With a proper build, Kaguya is one of the best tanks in the game. But fresh off the bat, all that's notable about her is that she has the strongest barrier: Salamander Shield knocks off a whopping 1200 damage.

By the way, remember when I mentioned how weird it was that all of Kaguya's attacks back when she was a boss featured things from their Lunatic versions? That's because when Kaguya becomes a player unit, all of her attacks actually change their names into the appropriate Lunatic spellcard.

Also surprise, surprise, she lost her MAP. At least she got Brilliant Dragon Bullets in exchange.

That just leaves Useless and More Useless. Star/Luna and Tewi's best roles this chapter are to just sit back and cast Cheer or Bless when appropriate, so I'll let them do that.

...Ho ho, don't worry, I don't intend to interfere with whatever you're planning. I expect this to turn out interesting, if only a little, so I'll be remaining a spectator.

...

Cue a bunch of spirits dying and just as many level ups.

Reisen got hit on a 22%.

Not to be outdone, Alice got hit on a 6%. She then proceeded to murder almost everything on the northwest side, even picking up Danmaku Brains L2 on the way. So I guess it evens out.

A few attacked Kaguya too, so here's her cut-in. It's kind of silly she only has this as a player when in the trailer her boss form had it, but eh!

Phew, I thought I came here to relax in a hot spring.

Everyone here did. We were even thinking about how all our everyday fatigue was melting away...

You just try too hard, Youmu. You gotta work smarter, not harder. Even when we're out in the fray, if you cleverly ride on someone's coattails while fighting, then...

Oho, I think we're gonna get along just fine.

Hehehe, you know it!

...Good grief. One more "ally" I need to keep an eye on.

...Come to think of it, Keine, why don't you try using that stone we were talking about? It's currently midday, and there's no reason to hold back on trash like this.

Hm, you're right. This is the first time I'll be using it in actual combat, but...

Oh, what's that accessory? I can feel some interesting waves coming from it. Almost like-

Good eye! That accessory is a rock that Luna picked up on the moon, reworked by Patchouli's group!

It's a real, genuine moon rock, so it's got the power of the full moon saved up in it.

A power stone? Smells fishy to me...

No, it definitely gives off power. It's made to amplify the lunar energies stored within using the spiritual power of its holder.

In other words, from now on she should be able to transform into hakutaku mode even in broad daylight, as long as she has enough willpower.

The power of a hakutaku is incredible, but it consumes a lot of MP. Use it carefully.

Oh so that's why Keine can transform at will.

More importantly, levels for the Akis. They're still really low on the totem pole after being completely ignored for FMW2, which is a shame since once they both get their level 3 friendship skills they really jump up in the world.

Sakuya is a Large sized unit. Normally this just means she does more damage, but all of the spirits are Small so she has to spam Focus to get anywhere.

I never thought I'd take a bath with other people.

You're already in our circle of friends, so there's no need to be nervous.

Oh yeah, you were acting kinda reserved, weren't yo-

W-well, that's got nothing to do with this. Besides, you girls wouldn't get how I feel.

*sigh*

A reminder that Hatate used to be a shut-in.

Also leveeeeeeels.

Yuyuko needs some levels herself, but since I had Merlin waste their move on the first turn on a MAP she can't get in range of anything.

I thought some suspicious stranger had come, but to think it was some vengeful spirits...!

...Wait. Could it be that they wanted to bathe with Lady Yuyuko...?

...

Y-your silence says it all! I'll cut you in two with this Roukanken!

Woah, woah, Youmu, calm down!

You know this uproar happened before we went in the bath, right~?

These guys are jerks. Remi and I were about to wash each other's backs, too.

Please calm down. We can always just go in again.

You know, your relationship's gotten a lot better.

Yeah, we've even got matching bathcaps.

Wait, did Remilia mak-

Th-that's inconsequential to this matter. Hurry up and take them all out already!

*sigh*... I was getting so excited for that hot spring, and then these guys just had to show up...

The snow's so white... Too white! Just send us back to the cellar already!

...Huh, they were so energetic until just a minute ago, and now they're down in the dumps.

Wait, aren't they just sensitive to the cold?

Now now, we're in the middle of winter already, so you can just think of it as another sign of the season. Of course, we still haven't seen the all-important winter youkai...

...What are you doing, Letty? Didn't you say that we'd play again when winter came?

Don't worry Cirno. I'm sure she'll keep her promise.

Right, right. She sounds like a really nice person, so-

More enemies for Reimu to slaughter appear.

!

More spirits? And they're coming from the spring!

...It seems they're pouring forth from the geyser, along with the hot water. I don't want to believe it, but could they be coming from underground...?

Wh-What do we do?! That was supposed to be where we'd wait for Letty!

Just stay focused on what's in front of you. We have no choice but to defeat the spirits!

Yeah, but-

It's winter! The winter devil has arrived!

It's all over! Give us back our autumn!

...I see you two haven't changed at all. It does make me feel like I'm really back though.

...Letty!

It's been a long time, Cirno. Have you been well?

I've been great! But you're late, Letty. Winter came, but you still didn't show up...

I'm sorry. Last year I didn't get to sleep until very late.

Oh, so this is the infamous Letty then?

The temperature suddenly dropped quite a few degrees. Is that her power...?

Yes, with her power to manipulate coldness, Letty increases the power of winter many times over. She fought alongside us during the incident last year.

In other words, winter itself is on our side. That's cool.

Good timing, Letty. We're having trouble with all these spirits gushing forth. Sorry to ask this of you as soon as you got here, but could you lend us a hand?

Indeed, we can save the reunion for after we've dealt with them.

You vengeful spirits dare to wake me with your noise in this peaceful, tranquil winter where even the mountain birds don't squawk? I'll crush you with the might of winter!

The original version of the game didn't account for the fact that Letty rejoins at the end of the game, so she'd spawn in as she was at the end of FMW2. Thankfully she is now automatically boosted to level 40.

Also she starts with a Frozen Frog. :unsmith:

It's such a shame the hot spring was intruded on.

Now that this has happened, there's no way we can go back to relaxing in the bath.

Still, in a way this is good fortune. If it truly was a filthy pervert, you'd be defenseless, Yuyuko.

That's quite worrying~.

Look at this ghost on ghost violence.

Anyway, everyone starts heading north to help Reimu finish the chapter.

I was all up for taking a dip in a hot spring, but I guess there's no way that's happening now.

...Well, not like I can do anything about it. And to be honest, I WAS kinda embarrassed...

With Danmaku Brains L2, Precise, and the Butterfly Fan, Alice's criticals have the same damage multiplier as Valor. It is very silly.

But more importantly, Reimu. Once she hits 150 Power she can use the Fantasy Nature command.

Music: That Voice Won't Reach

Like Keine's transformation, this automatically changes the music.

Originally, triggering Fantasy Nature was supposed to give Reimu a slight buff to her attributes and zero out all her friendships. Since this was kind of dumb they instead made it give Reimu access to a second skill, Lucid Shrine Maiden. This guy gives Reimu a 25% Double Image and much more importantly zeroes out all graze damage. Now even super accurate enemies can't touch Reimu.

Well unless they have Strike. Then she's just screwed.

Being in this state also allows Reimu to use her new finisher, which is also called Fantasy Nature. Yes, you have to activate Fantasy Nature to use Fantasy Nature. Think of it as declaring a spellcard, I guess?

Fantasy Nature is a very powerful attack, but it's sadly not post-movement. But Reimu was probably right next to the boss anyways to abuse Shotgunning, so it's not like that matters!

But in case I want to use it post-movement, Reimu also has this. After completing chapter 49, Reimu learns Zeal. For a whopping 70 SP, she can move one more time that turn.

Since Reimu is the only player character in this game who can learn Zeal, Sanbondo didn't quite balance it. It's supposed to only take effect on the character who cast it, but if the user was in the backrow then the person in front can use the extra move instead. This means that if you use Border Team, Yukari can access Zeal through Dream and give Reimu three straight turns.

Watch the video!

Good grief, somehow I managed to wake up just in time. My sleep seemed to last forever, just like this frog's.

Huh? Letty, is that thing you're holding a frozen frog?

It's a sign of our friendship, so make sure you hold on to it!

Of course. It's thawed a bit, so it's smaller now though.

Compared to when we first met, you've become much more broad-minded about fairies.

You seem to be in perfect form, Letty. I'm glad I can count on you...

...So you came too, Lily. Don't push yourself too hard.

Letty is still a really solid 2.0, which is good because I don't have much funds to spend on her.

quote:

Now that Letty's back, I'm feeling stronger than ever!

Yes, I'll do my best too!

You two. I'm happy as well, but don't get too hot-headed. In battle, it's important to keep your cool.

Keep my cool...? Cool... I got it, then I'll cover myself in snow!

Cirno! If you do that, you won't be able to see anything!

Come to think of it, word choice is important too...
Cirno gets a battle convo after Letty appears, but she and Sakuya are too far away for me to show it. Good thing this version of the game script has it!

Reimu spent enemy phase double murdering things. Here's that dodge sprite I mentioned.

Oh right, forgot to mention one last thing: like the plot implied, Fantasy Nature will time out after three turns. Be careful when you use it!

Marisa beats Reimu to the punch. Unlike the other Genji convos, anybody can trigger this. They just have to stand on top of the hot spring an-

...!

Woah! What are you all doing here?!

Insert Marisa filling him in, I guess.

...I see. I thought it was getting awfully noisy out there. So there are vengeful spirits on a rampage?

And here we were, having a drink together.

...

...Mm-hmm. Judging by the look on Unzan's face, he wants to say, "Expecting some kind of steamy scene? How outrageous!"

I agree. Even if it's during the confusion of a danmaku battle, you really shouldn't be sneaking into a hot spring.

Anyway, good luck with that spirit extermination out there. I'm praying for your victory.

...Well, that wasn't a Genji convo.

Music: The Arrows and Bullets that Enshrouded the Night

Eirin finishes. Astronomical Entombing uses chapter 42's stage theme, which might seem kind of weird until you realize

that the attack itself involves Eirin creating the Sealed Room you fought her in.

Oh and if she gets the kill, the enemy is sealed away with the space. Get it? Astronomical Entombing? :v:

:toot:

...Phew, is that the last of them?

I don't feel them coming out anymore, so maybe we can relax now?

But why were vengeful spirits coming out of this geyser anyway? I don't think it's just a coincidence.

...I'll need to have this matter thoroughly investigated. If these spirits really are coming from the depths of the earth, then...

Then what?

I'll explain later. Why don't we return to the shrine for now?

Good morning... my foot, what WAS that just now?

A simple way to wake a person up. I heard it from Aya once before and slightly changed it.

Even if I was up against a hungover Lady Kanako, I could wake her up in a single shot!

Should you really look so proud saying that...? Well, whatever. Did you come here just to test it out?

Yes. Like this, you should be able to make it to morning service.

I was planning on taking it easy till night fell, so this is kind of a pain.

------

Letty Whiterock
Changes: Can now hold three items.
New Personal Skill: Crystallize (Enemies can not counterattack against Letty for a turn. If Letty triggers Counter on enemy phase, the enemy's regular attack is also stopped.)
New Spirits: Fury, Triumph

Now that she doesn't join at like level 28 anymore, Letty rules. Her hybrid Real/Super gimmick is kind of pointless since SRW endgame prefers specialists, but she's got an excellent spirit set, great performance considering her Cost (her Large size helps a lot), and her Cold Wave PS is helpful on Lunatic.
Letty actually takes over Nitori's gimmick as "tank with a bunch of friends". She has (unequal) friendships with the entirety of Team 9 and the Three Fairies, so if you use all of them she can get pretty crazy. The perks of being a babysitter!

Tewi Inaba
Personality: Cunning (Hit: +1, Kill: +4, Miss: +2, Ally Killed: +1, Graze: +1)
Character Skill: Lucky (gets 20% more Points from battle)
Personal Skills: Rabbit of Good Fortune (reduce SP cost of Bless to 40), Very Lucky (Gain +15% Points. Stacks with the skill Lucky but not the spirit Luck), Trickster (On Tewi's next attack, any danmaku evasion penalties will be reversed into buffs. Limited uses), Culprit (every turn, Tewi can be Support Defended once by an adjacent unit, even if they don't have the skill. If they do, this doesn't lower their number of Support Defends)
Spirits: Bless, Luck, Scan, Alert, Focus, Triumph

Say hello to Kurumi's competition for worst character in the game. Tewi's gimmick is supposed to be that she gets you more Points, but she joins well past the point where that was actually a concern. Otherwise she's just completely useless, since her only other trick is being a decoy and literally any other unit with Alert/Grit could do better.
If Trickster was a debuff Tewi would be hilarious on the harder difficulties, but sadly it only applies to Tewi.

All Attacks
Battle theme: Pounded Lies and Mochi in the Moonlit Night (White Flag of Usa Shrine)

Eirin Yagokoro
Personality: Calm (Hit: +2, Kill: +3, Evade: +2, Graze: +1)
Characters Skills: Genius (Accuracy and Critical Rate + 20%)
Character Abilities: HP Regen (M), Healer, Renewer
Personal Skills: Lunar Medicine (Heal and Renew fully restore HP/MP), Sniper (if enemy is outranged, Eirin is guaranteed to get a critical hit. Does not work for Support or Team attacks.)
Spirits: Strike, Mercy, Guard, Snipe, Renew (fully restores the MP and Ammo of a selected unit. Yes, it shares names with the Renew ability. Blame Atlus.)

Eirin is who Patchouli wishes she could be. She's got ridiculous range on her attacks, but isn't locked into being a sniper: Game of Rising is a decent post-movement attack, and her other attacks are all very flexible. Eirin can actually take a hit without spamming Guard too. This ties in well with her being able to both Heal and Renew, and better than Dai or Koa at that if you equip the appropriate PS. She can only do one or the other though, and can't Renew post-movement like Koa can. Eirin's biggest issue is that deploying her costs just as much as deploying both Koa and Dai, and those two are mainstays.
The clear item for this game, the Exceeded Eternity, is practically made for Eirin since it gives the holder Hit and Away.

All Attacks
Battle theme: Mind of Space (Gensokyo Millenium)
Astronomical Entombing theme: The Arrows and Bullets that Enshrouded the Night (Voyage 1969)

Kaguya Houraisan
Personality: Big-shot (Hit: +2, Miss: +2, Kill: +4, Get Hit: +1, Dodge: +1)
Character Abilities: HP Regen (M), Salamander Shield (reduce the damage of all attacks by 1200, costs 10 MP)
Personal Skills: Robe of the Fire Rat (Salamander Shield blocks 300 more damage), Jewel from the Dragon's Neck (Increases base damage of all attacks by 200), Buddha's Stone Bowl (Guard becomes Guard+), Swallow's Cowrie Shell (All allied units regain 3000 HP. One use), Jeweled Branch of Hourai (All allied units regain 70 MP. One use)
Spirits: Guard, Strike, Cheer, Rouse, Wrath (52)

Kaguya has the strongest barrier in the game, but only middling defenses. So if you take the time to invest into her defenses, she shoots right up to the second best tank in the game. Her attack ranges are all incredibly flexible too, so she can counter basically anything. Her only real problem is that her barrier will burn through her MP, so she needs something to handle that. I recommend the Sunflower. Or the -50% Barrier cost FUB if you've got Points to spare.
Kaguya and Mokou actually make a decent team, if you're willing to deploy a non-protagonist 6.5 Cost team. Mokou loses out on Keine's friendship (unless you deploy Keine separately), but Kaguya can safely shuttle Mokou to whoever she needs to kill and not worry so much about her MP since Mokou's handling the damage anyways.

All Attacks
Battle theme: An Exceedingly Proper Yet Arrogant Game (Lunatic Princess)
End of Imperishable Night theme: The Shining Moon Rises on the Absurd Night (Voyage 1970)

------

I see you've stopped the game. Thank you for your hard work.

...Having gathered the power of both humans and youkai, we set out to the Underworld in order to investigate. And as we advance, we begin to talk of the discord between the surface and the Underworld... It's certainly not a simple relationship.

You mention that Kaguya got a new attack when she became a player, but I don't think it's in the attack video. Did you forget to add it? Also, let's take Yuyuko and Reimu leaving us with 11.5.

So with all that exposition about Shiro, it doesn't really feel like she's got any connections to any other existing characters at all. Considering what Yuuka said i'm guessing the game's implying she's from the same dream world as in th4, and everyone else from that world's already shown up. And since there's not any other character that's connected to dreaming (outside of like Yukari through Maribel, I guess) i'm guessing Shrio's more standalone than I expected. I thought if not an actual touhou she'd at least be related to one or something, but I don't think that's looking to be the case.
