All right well maybe I'm just drinking the kool-aid then and it'll be around for a long time yet. To spite Simmons, I guess?

You're right, but all shooting the messenger does is pour napalm on the "Grantland is DOA" fire. e - In a better note, DACOAHCO gets a glorious mention in ESPN's USC article: quote:The interim coach was Ed Orgeron, another member of Carroll's Camelot. Coach O was a live wire, not a phony bone in his body. Originally brought to USC by Hackett, he had been Carroll's defensive line coach, assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator. He would take off his shirt in team meetings and pound his chest, encouraging players to pour water on him. It wasn't an act; he was the anti-Kiffin. He returned to USC's old-school style of physical football, and won six of his first seven games. Finally, a grown man was coaching the Trojans again, and after defeating No. 5 Stanford, Coach O seemed confident he'd be anointed permanent head coach.

This is some weird-rear end timing. All four major professional sports are on, college football is entering it's major month, I can't speak for entertainment but sports-wise there's no lack of content. Unless they plan to take the Barnwell's and Lowe's and immediately throw them on the mothership, you'd think that they'd at least try to tread water until the spring/summer. But I guess if someone at the Mouse says you gotta go, you gotta go.

Welp. In 10 years we'll look back to the last couple years of Grantland and have no idea how everyone who wrote for them did it at the same time. And how Bill Barnwell was included in that group of talented people.

One complaint I've read from several sports GM interviews is that they can't even call guys to tell them they've been traded/cut before they hear it on twitter. So this may be a case where ESPN has this call queued up with their HR goons to do over the next week, but it got out anyway. Particularly with that announcement that they intend to keep all the Grantland staff.

it would be chill if some of the higher ups at ESPN were held accountable for the poo poo show that's occurred over the past 2 years across all their properties rather than just the low-level employees that really have nothing to do with the relative success or failure of a media conglomerate this size

So desperate for scoops that they scooped themselves. Espn is basically ranting characters, a website, and broadcast contracts now, they better hope the contracts keep them afloat.

Grantland was aggressively middlebrow. There were some good things there that would get drowned out by 12,000 word essays about MTV Real World. But that is how media works.

Grantland was awesome and all the negative stuff people bitch about was grossly overshadowed by the fact they published a legitimately amazing writer everyday. They let Brian Phillips write about dog sleds and sumo and Wesley Morris cover WNBA draft fashion. They assembled the best NBA coverage I could possibly imagine with Lowe, Abrahms, Goldsberry, and network for the lols. The variety found in the numerous "shoot around" during the playoffs was some of my favourite content. I probably checked the site three times daily. People can bitch about Barnwell and Sharp and Greenwald but Grantland consistently owned and I will miss it dearly.
