Parkingtigers posted:BRIAN BLESSED just released an autobiography, and there's an audiobook version with the legend himself reading it. See also Lionel Fanthorpe, who is an ordained minister, qualified instructor of both bodybuilding and judo, Fortean scholar and explorer, biker and author of over 250 fiction and non-fiction books. Most of his SF is considered to be quite poor, but that's hardly surprising as he was knocking out an average of a book a month for fifteen years. During one three-year period in the 1950s he wrote 89 novels, which is equivalent to double the rate of the NaNoWriMo goal sustained throughout.

That's insane. What kind of scope does that guy use? How can you even see a target from almost 3km away?

Ok, 81 clicks elevation..... Windage, your mother. What is the velocity of that round; at the muzzle and when it struck the target?

There is a pretty decent article about what it took to make that shot here : http://www.millettsights.com/resources/shooting-tips/making-a-2700-yard-shot/ And that first clickbait is wrong, the round would take around 5.7 seconds to get that far, they appear to have just used the muzzle velocity to calculate the time.

He said he maxed out the dials for elevation and windage, and there still weren't enough mil dots in either direction. He was basically placing the big open space in one corner over the target. First shot missed, but the guys on the receiving end had no idea what was happening or what to take cover behind, so there was plenty of time for the followup shot, which hit. Imagine being on the receiving end, so far away you can't hear the bang, let alone spot the sniper. Now consider being on the wrong end of one of these: Iowa class battleship. That second image has been posted before, and will be posted again. I couldn't not post it. Click for bigger. Those 16 inch guns fire a variety of shells ranging from 1,900 to 2,700 lbs to a range of 42,345 yards. Aiming is done with the assistance of a mechanical computer that accounts for powder charge, wind, ship's speed, target's speed, humidity, and other factors. Some of the training videos are on youtube. Give it a watch. It's real neat, and gives you a great idea of how the machine works, not just how to work it. Humans give the computers the variables, the computer does the math faster than what we can put it into it. The output kills the enemy. Some engineer had to design the system and the formula to give to the computer to compute. We are very good at killing ourselves. It's still amazing and I thank you for the video.

Did the Iowas in the 80s still use the mechanical fire computers they were built with? Surely not. Also that conversion is one ugly bitch, totally ruined her lines with the chopper pad.

I remember hearing some absurd statistic like 70%+ of the world's population lives within reach of US Navy guns. The real stat there is that most of the world's population is concentrated to within a couple dozen miles of the ocean, but it's scarier to say it the first way.
