I like the red/blue colouring of the show. Nice change from ORANGE BLUE that was all the rage. Obviously it makes thematic sense and it's a little more muted.

First episode was pretty good. Like the Noir style of it and the ending for me really cinched the show.

Yeah, dubbing the dialogue over the mayhem in an apparent attempt to replicate comic-style "enormous word balloons during action sequences" storytelling was just cringey. Generally loving the series so far but that was a notable misstep.

Up to episode 3. Between Jessica's experience with Kilgrave and Trish's fear of being assaulted this is very much a show about women living in a woman-unfriendly world.

Kilgrave is a guy who forces his will on people, and it's interesting to see characters force their will on one another, even without superpowers.

The Kilgrave scene and Jessica's flashbacks so far are legitimately unsettling. Tennant and Ritter were really good choices with Ritter having a horrifyingly accurate depiction of someone with PTSD that probably cut a bit too close to home for me.

I enjoyed the first three episodes so far but this really doesn't feel like something that is connected to the MCU.

I mean you have your larger than life super heroes deal with evil robots/aliens/secret Nazi organisations with the occasional funny light hearted moment and then you have Jessica Jones try to handle her rapist before he kills and tortures more people. Dare Devil did dark and gritty well but this show is way too heavy to binge through and enjoy. It just feels like it takes place in a completely separate universe.

Not spoiling this because it's based on info we had before the show aired, but it's interesting that Jessica never knows where her next attack is going to come from, including from people she considers friends. That has to be a very uncomfortably familiar feeling for a lot of audience members.

Personally, I just think Kilgrave, as a character, can't be done tastefully. His superpower is rape. I didn't think he was right for the MCU at all, even the darker series, and I still don't think he is.

Good so far, some dull choreography. I think the witnesses were a tribute to Brian Bendis' "ton of people answer a question" gag he uses a lot. Still hate the narration.

Why not?

Is rape something that shouldn't be discussed? Or had the psychology of it dug into in media?

As long as it's not done in a hateful manner it should be. We shouldn't just not talk about or explore things that make people uncomfortable.

I dunno if this show does it well, but it hasn't been distasteful so far 3 episodes in.

Yeah, I just feel that a TV show about superheroes isn't the place to have a story about a serial rapist and sexual assault-induced PTSD.

On an unrelated note, I have no idea how they're going to tie Iron Fist into this sort of tone. It seems a bit too serious for a character who's essentially a pastiche of 70s kung fu movies.

The twist with Malcolm was great. I thought his role in the series was bad writing, that he was there to show how considerate Jessica Jones could be to this incredibly humble black male, even if she used him. But that was the point. It was there to skewer liberal "empathy". She helped and used Malcolm, but never really knew him.

And not everything is lost in adaptation: the the couple out to kill supers was really a Brian Bendis plot. It's exactly what I was talking in my earlier post about normal and superheroic realities meeting. My skepticism has been satisfied. I don't know about the rest of the series, but Episode 4 finally gets the comic.

This show hasn't been about super heroes though(so far anyway again 3 episodes in). Also maybe it's just because I'm used to comics or whatever.

But large tonal shifts don't mean much to me. Jessica in her own show is dealing with her own problems and history, ditto with Matt Murdock, Ditto with Luke Cage, and hopefully eventually Danny. Individual shows can and should have different tones or else it would become boring.

But It wouldn't be difficult to merge those 4 characters into one series which would have it's own tone. You don't think a sarcastic rear end Jessica Jones would fit in with a dude who dresses like a devil, a invincible man, and a kung fu master? She would have a field day.

This is something the Movies figured out with them trying to differentiate tone between them all more in Phase 2.

It may be premature but I do think they avoided the whole "we're just fetishizing rape and violence" torture porn type stuff pretty much immediately since Jessica immediately desides to turn around and fight instead of being a crying wreck that just exists to have bad things happen to for however many more episodes. Promising start.

It's just you.

It's draining but it's really great. The lead is killing it as Jessica so far I think. Also 1x2 The eyeroll Luke does when the dude tries to stab him with a broken bottle made me instantly ready for the Luke Cage show despite me having no interest before.

Edit: I literally can't marathon this. I have to take like a 15-20 minute break minimum between each episode to recover. I don't think that's actually a bad thing though.

Just finished and I found it a little uneven in places, but that might just be me watching it all at once. This isn't a show to marathon. I don't think they went too far with anything, but there was definitely some dark poo poo in it and I think getting hit with one after the other might've soured me a little. With Daredevil I watched it all and couldn't wait to watch it again. I'm gonna wait on this one for a bit. Definitely not for kids or those who can't handle heavy depressing poo poo.
