Is it just me or is the story in Final Fantasy XIII-2 kind of...terrible? I mean, I kind of dug Final Fantasy XIII's story for whatever reason, but XIII-2 essentially throws that out a hour into the loving game. And the time travel stuff is absolutely nonsense, I'm about to beat the game and I have noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo loving idea why Sazh and Snow are time travelers yet Hope had to build a time capsule or whatever the gently caress. Noel's story is kind of interesting but is ruined by Caius being the worst thing ever. And why are Lightning and Serah saviors and have magic eye powers? Because a goddess decided they were the ones? Ugh, this game has absolutely no idea what it's doing story wise at all. The gameplay is pretty fun though! Please tell me Lightning Returns' story is not nearly as dumb as this one, because this is honestly the worst Final Fantasy story I've ever witnessed...worse than 8 (lol orphanage) and X-2. Hell, it's probably one of the worst video game stories I've ever experienced.

Sazh is...soooooort of explained in his DLC. Kind of. If you squint real hard. As for Lightning and Serah, yeah, it really just is that Etro arbitrarily chose them. And LR? Man, you haven't seen anything yet if you think XIII-2 is dumb. I mean, it's dumb in a good way, but it escalates things in the only way it knows how, which is making things bigger, flashier, and dumber.

Lr has a worse story in having 10 pages of plot spread over 40 hours because tri-ace had like a year to make the game. People who tell you information are surprised when you repeat it back to them. Hope never, ever shuts up with his monotone voice. Ever.

LR's plot is stupid, but for me it was entertainingly so - I like the concepts behind the world-building a lot even if the game didn't adequately follow up on them, there were moments when the voice actors got to actually convey emotion for a change (Snow's boss fight comes to mind), and the entire end sequence is just this technicolor retardation festival that perfectly caps off the weird, shambling saga that FFXIII had become.

Also I don't think Lightning has magic eye powers or she'd be dead like Serah. And worse than FFVIII? Let's not say things we will regret. But you're right, XIII probably had a better story. It's just that XIII, while having the most potential, squandered a lot of it. XIII-2 is much more..."realized." It is what it is. So I kinda like XIII-2's more just because it wasn't as disappointing.

Despite the complaints I have about the story it's actually a fun game to play...so I wouldn't call it a bad game. I have never finished FFVIII despite getting to the final dungeon because of how stupid that orphanage scene is and the amount of hoops it has to go through to make that "work."
