nice cover imo

I really love this manga and I'm glad it has a second volume. The guys are dense and don't communicate well but in a realistic way that teenagers would be dumb about feelings, not just manufactured for drama's sake.

We played Trivial Pursuit on Christmas Day and the question "In which Star Wars movie does the Death Star blow up" showed up.

The right answer was Return of the Jedi. Which is not wrong but also not right because it also blows up in A New Hope.

I got mad at that but the question wasn't directed at us and the ones who did get it had no idea anyway

Yeah my first thought was Neville Longbottom. Which is fine since Neville was the best character in that franchise too.

My personal theory is you have to know the staff knew they were making something incredibly derivative, and it was entirely intentional. I mean, you have a huge plot McGuffin hidden in a droid. So, going from that basis, TFA is meant to be an Episode IV for a new generation.
Honestly I'm not sure that was necessary. Star Wars is something that's become a lot larger than just itself. It's a cultural event. Cross-cultural even. I was reading a newspaper article where they were talking about the films headed with a photograph of a bunch of people dressed up like stormtroopers sitting in a movie theater waiting for Episode VII to start; "In China" according to the caption. You've got people who first watched the movies when they were kids showing it to their own kids, who in turn have shown (or will show) it to their own. Obviously there'll always be someone who didn't see it, but I'd be willing to bet the vast majority of people who bought tickets to Episode VII already (perhaps even recently) saw Episode IV regardless of how old they were.

There's always been the (now non-canon, thank goodness) expanded universe, but for most people Star Wars is the original trilogy and the prequels. Six films. I can understand the desire to update it, but I don't see the need to "Remake" it, if you get me.

Endorph posted:

the first order being a bunch of kids makes sense, all the senior officers got owned by the rebellion. it's a bunch of younger people trying to pick up the torch.
True, but it's not like they sprung up overnight. Even with the high command liquidated there still would've been some rogue admirals and policy-makers around. It's been thirty years in-universe since the end of Episode VI and the universe in Star Wars is a pretty big place. Even if the majority of First Order officers are young people who've been seduced by nostalgia for a system that predates them (playing off of real world youth fascism movements), I'm still surprised there's not a few more members of the old guard kicking about.

I know I just badmouthed the EU but one thing I did like was how following the defeat of the Emperor you had all these standing fleets going rogue with their admirals declaring themselves warlords over their personal sectors of space. I feel like something like that would've made for a better setup with the rebel alliance now trying to rebuild and reunite the universe they've just liberated.

I think it was "necessary" in that Star Wars is a major piece of Disney's moneymaking portfolio and the surest way to make a bunch of money and have most people leave happy is to give them something you already know they like.
