It's particularly funny because it becomes increasingly clear they don't really play video games much anymore and have aged out of enjoying them on the same level they used to and now they have no idea what to write about beyond occasional Destiny comics or comics complaining about kids these days liking games they don't. But they're not actually willing to stop writing their gaming webcomic which is somehow sadder than just realizing they've outgrown a hobby they used to enjoy.

Penny Arcade is not a good comic but at least the artist tries new things and the writer actually understands jokes and writing structure. What I'm saying is Penny Arcade is a good comic that is bad?

The money comes through events like the Charity dinner and fundraisers like Desert Bus for Hope. It's a great charity, but they have fulltime people handling it now.

Penny Arcade is the out of touch old men who dominate the newspaper comics lineup, but have exhausted every clever joke they had and no longer care about their subject. Except they're willing to say the word "gently caress". And they started in 2000 instead of 1920.

I hate all their non-PA comics, with the exception of the DnD thing with Jim Darkmagic which is actually funny and mayyyyyyybe Automata, if only it wasn't so loving pleased with how "creative" it is. But they're far and away the Garfield of webcomics - that honor belongs to PvP.

They clearly had very strong opinions on it (one more so than the other, I forget who but I think it's the bigger rear end in a top hat/Tycho) and weren't going to let go until they realized, oh hey, this will affect PAX and the business. Suddenly that hill wasn't important enough to die on.

Suddenly that hill wasn't important enough to die on. I think it was the artist, I remember reading one of the blog posts about his realization that this comic could do real harm to his other ventures. I believe it was child's play, specifically, where sponsors were starting to get antsy, as child's play (obviously) focuses on children.

Suddenly that hill wasn't important enough to die on. (a) the artist is ABSOLUTELY the bigger rear end in a top hat and (b) all their much-vaunted charity work has its origins in basically organizing a group of early-adopting, entertainment - starved Internet nerds to go all in on the idea of "Penny Arcade fan as a lifestyle choice" and throw thousands of dollars at what was less a civic-spirited initiative and more a dogwhistle gently caress-you at Jack Thompson Evidently that first stunt cemented them as some sort of nerd royalty with a "yeah but" card playable pretty much forever.

Didn't both the charity and convention eventually both distance themselves from the penny arcade guys anyway, to avoid getting the stink of their rear end in a top hat on them in the wake of the dickwolf poo poo?

Didn't they even print up 'Team Dick Wolf' t-shirts at one point? Or where they planning to and backed down at the last minute? Edit: looks like they printed up shirts and pennants and sold them via the site for a while, then backed down and removed them, then later said they regretted backing down, then later apologised for that. http://geekfeminism.wikia.com/wiki/Dickwolves Snowglobe of Doom has a new favorite as of 05:11 on Jan 6, 2016 |

oldpainless posted:What's this dickwolf stuff? This extremely tasteless comic got them some heat for using rape as a joke, which (as the poster pointed out above) was mainly championed by the artist. Once the sponsors for their other projects started making noise they buckled. If I remember right, his post mentioned that he began to understand that he needed to not be a childish rear end in a top hat because it was going to hurt the child's play brand, which did start out as a gently caress you to Jack Thompson but has accidentally done some good and needs to keep going.
