I just realized there was a manga page on the screen. I don't' want to speculate what kind of manga it is, I doubt its some Jojo. Have some AUG from D&D Lets play soldier, but I don't want to follow the fitness regime. Actually, looks about right Serious question, I figured that being in the army is pretty physically demanding, you're running around, doing work, digging holes, setting up fences, filling sandbags, marching. Food I've heard is fairly basic, but filling. How could someone get that big? It's not like someone who's just is prone to being chubby, that's full on morbid obesity. Also, you can get pizzas on a base in the middle of what I assume is Afghanistan? I guess he might be a clerk or in supply or logistics.

For what it's worth regarding the superfat soldier, I worked with a TACP that was diagnosed with a brain tumor. They successfully removed it but had him on a regimen of heavy steroids and a no-exercise profile (as in, even if he felt up to it, he was not allowed to exercise). Guy gained like 90 pounds because the steroids made him want to eat and eat and eat and there was no way to burn it off. Of course once he was cleared he ended up going back to doing normal JTAC stuff like running and being physically active and was back within passing fitness scores within a year. On the other hand, that is what looks like Kandahar or Bagram, which means superfat soldier is deployed. If you have a medical issue they'll typically not deploy you so I doubt it's any condition other than an Dr. Dominos prescribing an overzealous dose of pepperoni.

I had no idea US bases were so well stocked with comforts. I guess when you're stuck in a lovely endless war, being able to get a pizza or fried chicken is a small comfort. I know a lot of people in the Canadian Navy and they visit US bases all the time, and they say they're the best to visit because they always have what amounts to mall in them with a food court. I wonder if the Army bases are staffed by locals or independent contractors. BTW, want some scary stories, read up on some of the stuff that happened to women who went over to Iraq to work in the Green Zone, was drugged, gang raped, and when she reported it, she was imprisoned in a shipping container. It literally took a group of actual soldiers to rescue her. During the height of wars they were taking anyone who could breathe. You can find a ton of stories about recruiters waving requirements because they needed all the warm bodies they could get. Turns out staffing two wars entirely with volunteers is pretty hard to do.

You can find a ton of stories about recruiters waving requirements because they needed all the warm bodies they could get. More like staffing two increasingly unpopular wars that nobody wants to fight in anymore is hard. There were a ton of different factors on that one. A lot of folks joined up for the college money because they figured hey, it's peace time, I'll just serve a few years, get my college in, and then get on with my life. Then they're spending years in the sandbox, having their college hosed over, and coming home telling people "don't join up, it sucks." Then it turned out that recruiters were lying their faces off, screwing with paperwork, and telling you literally anything to get you to sign the paper. Then it turned out that the military was just refusing to let people ETS out and word got around, which threw a spanner in the recruiting works even harder. It turns out that when you try to staff an unpopular war based on lies using lies to recruit it doesn't go over all that well. Especially when the military's response to people saying "hey I did my four years, I'm out" was "lol nope you stay." A volunteer army is just plain better overall but you can't just round up a bunch of dudes and fight whoever you want anymore with one.

I wonder if the Army bases are staffed by locals or independent contractors. I don't know about the Canadian Navy, but when I got to Kandahar back in 2008 and the Canadian Army was running the show they had an outdoor street hockey rink with a Tim Horton's right next to it (plus a hole-in-the-wall exchange that sold cigarettes for about 1/3 the price of the American exchange). Stuff from home is a pretty big morale booster, especially the guys who spend a majority of time outside the wire and only get to come back and get it every so often. Of course then they get thrown out of the chow hall after a mission because someone doesn't like that their uniforms are dirty. Meanwhile most folks assigned at the big FOBs that never leave either get jacked from working out all the time or fat from sitting around eating lovely Pizza Hut every day. Now since we're on the topic of that deployment, there was a healthy helping of AUG to go with the pizza. There I worked with Hall, who was hands-down the grossest motherfucker I've ever met. I was first introduced to him in some pre-deployment training we all went through in Kansas. He was an Air Force E-4 who was planning to punch as soon as he got home and return to his hometown in West Virginia. I'm pretty sure he was at least mildly autistic, actually, because he was a computer genius but utterly inept at anything else while being totally unaware that he sucked at an activity. He walked like a giant toddler; toes pointed towards each other, arms limp at his side and swaying with each step. He'd brag in his strange, lispy voice about how good of a shot he was from hunting back home, then broke down in tears at the rifle range because he failed the course 6+ times in a row and the instructors eventually shot his targets for him so they could go home. He didn't know how to shower properly and would walk into the shower, stand under the water for 2-3 minutes without actually washing then get out sopping wet and put his dirty clothes back on, ensuring a constant funk of mildew, rear end and body odor surrounded him at all times. He almost got the Colonel in charge of us killed when he on radio watch; he'd turned the radio off because the sounds annoyed him. After the team our he was riding in was under fire for 45 minutes or so the Colonel used a cell phone to call our boss, who ran in to find Hall browsing Wikipedia and practicing reading and writing in binary. But the worst was when the topic of his wife came up. Hall had a sweetheart back home who he had met while he was in his sophomore year of college, then married before he joined the Air Force. Throughout the course of various conversations he mentioned that he worked at a gas station at the time and she would come in, flirt with him, bring him food and generally 'be really cute.' Then one day he slipped out the bombshell. When she was coming to the gas station to visit him she was eleven years old. We did the math based off of his other stories and worked out that he married her when she was about 16, and she was already pregnant at that time. We actually had to suppress that information from getting out because we were worried that if someone beat the poo poo out of him and he died that we'd all get hosed for it, but needless to say nobody was very friendly with Hall after that.
