Conservatives hate that framing of the relationship between citizens and government. I don’t think we should just let things happen to people and let them be stupid and the victims of the consequences of their actions. I think we can put enough obstacles in the path of poor decision-making.

My favorite from when I was in Columbia was the old "Yeah, but that's history now. And look at all of the free stuff they're getting, and they still can't get anywhere!" Usually followed by muttering "dumb n****rs" under their breath.

And that would be from college Republicans/Libertarians. Older folks and rural folks wouldn't bother to mutter.

Don't do this. Training a dog to be useful as an alarm will make it a horrible pet. It will bark at anything and everything at all hours and you will learn to hate it. Without attack training (or abuse that will make it attack anything that it doesn't fear, you basically) it will also be more likely to greet the guy with a happy wagging tail than he would be to bite him.

The leading cause of gun death is suicide. Having a dog means having someone who loves and needs you which helps deal with depression. Petting them lowers blood pressure and walking them helps control weight.

Dogs are much better for your safety than guns. And since break ins of an occupied house almost never happen you don't actually need a gun or a dog for that purpose. But of the two dogs enrich your life so get a dog.

They're the ones who are actually getting hosed by devaluing bachelor degrees and high school diplomas. But please, tell me more about how I'm not a real progressive because I don't really care about the poors. I never tire of seeing the impoverished trotted out as props for ideological purity circlejerks.

I also think it's useful to consider historical context when you're talking about this devaluation. When the public education system was devised only a very tiny minority was pursuing any education after grammar school, and colleges and universities were exclusive institutions attended only by the elite. Progressive-era reformers figured that everything a student needed to know to participate fully and effectively as Americans--socially, economically, and politically--could be learned between grades 1 and 12. From that point on (spurred by the decline and end of child labor) high school enrollment and graduation expanded to become the default level of attainment by the 1970s at the latest.

Since then, however, we've definitely learned that grades 1-12 aren't actually enough. That's been amply demonstrated by the continuous increase in the proportion seeking and attaining higher education, as well as the expansion of public kindergarten and pre-school programs. It also shows in the expanding earnings gap between dropouts, high school graduates, and people with bachelor's and graduate degrees. The curious thing is that people were ok with the education system accepting more responsibility for very young children, with the adoption of K and pre-K, but there's been no initiative whatsoever to increase public education beyond grade 12. I guess because those people are considered adults, it's their responsibility to provide for their education. But it flies in the face of the purpose of the public education system, which is that the state is supposed to take responsibility for providing every citizen with the basic education necessary for full participation in the American nation, as above. HS doesn't cut it anymore.

All this indicates is that grades 1-12 as they are taught aren't enough, not that more time is needed. The relative success of 1-12 in other countries indicates that the problem can be fixed by better schooling and societal attitudes towards high school grads and certain professions, and that additional years aren't necessary.

Because the whole "everyone must go to college" thing in the US is unnecessarily toxic. There are plenty of jobs that shouldn't require that sort of education, but the "you're a failure if you don't go to college" attitude is a self-fulfilling prophecy that means that tons of students who wouldn't go to college in other countries (that have higher standards of living and secondary education than the U.S., e.g. Australia, many countries in Europe etc) are forced to take on unnecessary debt and years of extra education that they may not want or need, all in order to avoid the crazy stigma of not having gone to college in the US.

This wasn't true 40 years ago when you could go to a public college for close to free. That is the issue, not the stigma of not going.

Most of that issue is solved if you make college inexpensive or free. I'm sure there's some people who depend on their 18 year old to provide income for them, but they're probably skipping college already.
