The studio freaked out and kicked out the director halfway through and did a bunch of hasty reshoots to cobble together a second half for film so even though it has a few interesting elements it's a goddamn mess however you look at it. There's a whole thread about it in CD if anyone is interested in finding out exactly how hosed up things got behind the scenes. Also it was so different to the other movies that it's like comparing apples and oranges but if you consider box office receipts to be an indicator of popularity then it was MUCH MUCH worse than the other two. Like, catastrophically worse. The director Josh Trank was set up to direct a Star Wars film after FF but that fell through as a result of this shitfest, careers were ruined over this.

Simon Kinberg is a producer for Fantastic Four and several upcoming Star Wars movies. He's probably the one that got Trank fired.

Those first two FF movies were garbage, but they seem like Citizen Kane compared to the FF reboot. Without a doubt one of the worst movies I've ever seen, and easily the worst superhero movie ever (including that really old FF movie). I seriously didn't think they had anywhere to go but up after the first two abysmal movies, but they found a way to scrape through the bottom of the barrel and explore the depths below. If anything it's worth watching just to see how bad it is.

Eh, it's just kinda crappy. It's the first third of an interesting movie, [reel missing], and the third third of a forgettable Marvel knockoff. It's hardly the cinematic Holocaust people keep making it out to be.

When Disney and Marvel are trying to keep up a consistent money-making brand, not to mention the faint touches of continuity between the films, a dud or failure is going to be seen as bad by more than just the punters who saw it.
