Stargate: Universe

The show only got as far as it did (2 seasons) because its predecessors were huge successes. Well, SG-1 was very successful with 10 seasons, and Atlantis was 5 seasons long but was cut short to make room for the poo poo pile that was Universe. I remember my heart sinking after watching the very first episode.

Some fat smart kid was able to get himself involved in the top secret Stargate program because he beat a complex problem in a video game. Then I remember some out of the blue hump action going on in a locker room between two characters that we know nothing about. While I have nothing against sex on tv, the way it was portrayed was that the show was being aimed at teenagers in the most insultingly embarrassingly, obnoxious way possible. I kept watching it for a full season because I already invested in 15 years of the drat franchise and didn't think it was possible to have bad episode after bad episode.

Basically it was Dawson's Creek in space. And no, I never watched Dawson's Creek save for one episode because I was curious what it was about since that was the talk of tv land while I was in high school. I was mortified how people thought this show was the least bit interesting. I had it nicely locked away and forgotten in my brain until I saw that first episode of Universe.

Holy poo poo, while you're right that SG:U was a bad show, nothing they did was as annoying as this post, gently caress

With Downton Abbey, I imagine the lampooning of the manor lords and their lifestyle is too subtle for a general audience that wants to believe that they'd gladly trade their own problems for those of the idle rich, drat the consequences. You can't be subtle with poo poo like that unless you're planning a long con, but if they were doing that, the reveal should have been made already. Aren't they on the final season? I've never seen an episode but I've heard the occasional snippet from my parents watching it in the living room, and I certainly hadn't gathered that it was anything but straight-faced noble worship. What I'm saying is that if it wasn't obviously mocking from accidental exposure, they weren't trying hard enough to overcome the momentum of the subject matter. Most people just want to pretend to be rich and powerful, so you have to overpower that to get a message through.

As an example, I was enjoying Orange is the New Black and started discussing it with a friend and explained that a great part of my enjoyment from the show was that Piper (and by extension, hey boyfriend) was a terrible person who deserved everything that was happening to her, and that she was by far the worst human being in a prison full of what "better society" considers scum not worth thinking about. My friend was very confused because he genuinely liked Piper, thought it was unfair that she was there and felt sympathy for all of the horrible things she had to endure due to no fault of her own. Sometimes I'm never sure if I'm reading a show right, though, because I do have some serious problems with depression which could color things a bit.

Not much fun
If we are talking about recent TV then it'd be any of the slick, tense thriller type shows with one word titles.

Scandal - started off ok then turned into gross torture porn and batshit storylines.
Hostages - surgeon lady's family are held hostage and threatened with death unless she kills the president. Then she kisses the bad guy who killed her best friend just days before. So dumb.
Stalker - hot women get killed in gruesome ways every week.

That F is for Family show on Netflix seems really poo poo too. I couldn't make it through one episode.

I can still remember some lowlights off the top of my head:
- The seven people trapped in the town try digging a hole for a week. The episode starts at the end of the week. One character introduces themselves to another and they exchange basic information. So, we're to believe that these two people stood next to each other digging all day for a week and never once talked before then?
- Ripped guy fakes his death for the cameras by jumping off a second floor balcony, landing on his feet, and falling over. This fools the "experts" behind the cameras

Maybe the difference we saw in Piper is I grew up the son of a military officer/doctor and so was upper middle class from birth, whereas the friend in question had started much closer to the bottom of the socio-economic ladder and worked their way up. I saw everything I hated about my "peers" in Piper, so maybe my friend just saw a successful person that they strove to be , assuming you don't examine her behavior.

I can certainly see how wanting what the main character has can help you take their side. It's easier to root for an action hero if he's handsome or strong, etc. What would be the audience reaction to an action/revenge film like John Wick, Die Hard or Commando where the "hero" was an obese goon with a face made for radio, or greasy haired meth skeleton? Change nothing else, barring perhaps substituting physicality for ambush, stealth and firepower (in place of martial arts and wire stunts) to try and suspend disbelief. I assume most viewers would see the main character as a villain, some deranged psychopath, snapping off bitter one-liners as he ends the life of another man who honestly had nothing to do with whatever vengeance is being pursued. The closest to that movie I can think of is Falling Down, but the character in that is a neutral entity, not an actively repulsive one by beauty and strength standards.

I love Revolutionary Girl Utena and Gunnerkrigg Court, if those count...then again, you could show those to children without exposing them to anything horribly inappropriate (just don't show them The Adolescence of Utena, also a few scenes towards the end of the series are PG-13 at the very least but it's tastefully done for the most part, unlike shows like Game of Thrones which at times feel like porn with extremely high production values) I don't like how much sex and nudity gets thrown onscreen in TV shows these days, and I just know Twin Peaks is going to fall in that category when it comes back...doesn't make me happy, but at least it's not a radical departure for Lynch, just look at the sex scenes and nudity present in Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, and Mulholland Drive. As long as Twin Peaks Season 3 is as good as season 2 was (hopefully more in line with season 1 though!) I'll be satisfied, Fire Walk With Me was garbage though...

Mean-spirited cynicism can be funny (Strangers With Candy), shows with casts full of awful people can be great (Bojack Horseman, Arrested Development), but not when they're boring and dependent on shock value like Allen Gregory. EVEN SO, I'd still watch it before putting myself through 5 minutes of Sister Sister. Easily.

Scrubs frequently sucked but managed to clear the bar with a handful of good moments over 9 years, and for being the most accurate show at portraying hospital culture (seriously).

My vote goes to LOST, Battlestar Galactica, The X-Files, and any other carrot-waving narrative that promises answers to questions before falling over under their own turgid overextension and hiding behind "it's not about the destination, it's about the journey." They're not even shows, they're con games.
