Many of us have now been eliminated from the fantasy football playoffs, so it's time to start thinking about 2016 fantasy baseball. This is by far the earliest fantasy baseball thread we've had in this forum but I am already researching 2016 so I figured why not get the ball rolling. For the love of Christ please include all relevant details to your league when asking for advice. Keeper baseball leagues are notorious for having custom/obscure rules so if you want advice on your niche situation, give us the full story. IcePhoenix posted:How many teams are in your league? I've been poking around the Steamer projections cause I'm getting the fantasy baseball itch again. Couple thoughts: Catcher looks god drat barren after Posey. You'll probably be OK with McCann or Russel Martin but they could both easily hit <.240. Is Schwarber the clear #2? Like Napoli or Gattis a few years ago, this could be the last time he's eligible at C, but Schwarbers better than them. I love "catchers" who aren't actually playing the position, they get more ABs and don't get beat up by foul tips and stuff. I like Mesoraco a lot IF he's healthy. Steamer thinks Correa is the #1 SS but thinks his .233 ISO will come back to earth. It projects him at .275 22HR 21 SB which is still great but maybe not top 10 overall like some ppl are valuing him. Steamer also has Trea Turner in the top 10 shortstops, keep an eye on that guy for sure. Could steal 30 bases. OTOH Steamer doesn't believe in Brandon Crawford's power spike at all. Which makes sense since it was such and outlier. Not what I want to see as a Giants fan though. Bogaerts sure had a weird season. After hitting ~15 dingers at every level, he drops to 7 last year in 650 PA. FB% drops from 41% in 2014 to 25%, but he hits .320 on a ridiculous babip. Wonder if the Sox had him change his approach to make him more of a contact hitter? Is Ottoneu worth the money? Never played a Dynasty league before.

In dynasty I would probably take Correa third after Trout and Harper. If Pederson would figure out the strikezone is not Dodger Stadium I could see him jump to 10-15. Right now he isn't worth to be drafted as a starter. McCutchen RIP Blackmon is about 8 places too low if he can keep it up for a whole season. I would like to say Abreu can get better but he is already 28. We need to do a roster draft for this season. Whoever you draft you are stuck with for the while season. No waivers, free agents, or trades. Ride that poo poo out. We did one for football and it was awesome. Even with Spacejung cheating.

I was going to wait until 2016 and make the 2016 thread. Podcasts are cool. Fangraphs' Sleeper and the Bust and BP's Flags Fly Forever are must-have resources. CBS is really good too. Fantasy Focus Baseball also exists (it's good too but super cringy at times if Cockcroft doesn't get reined in). And be careful using xFIP if you're gonna use it because if a pitcher has dogshit defense behind him he will continue to have dogshit defense behind him unless something changes (but I agree, it is useful). Pretty excited that this cool thread for cool guys is up so soon. Anyone know a good site for auction values so I can decide my keepers? The ones I found on Google seem to be uh, not very accurate. Also, should I be keeping Lindor for 5 bux when I can only keep 3 players, thanks!

Right now its just based on Steamer but eventually there will be more options. http://www.fangraphs.com/auctiontool.aspx E: Also I am joining a new league this year. I learned about the format after I joined and it is H2H Categories of... R, RBI, HR, SB, AVG, OPS, K, Errors W, SV, K, ERA, WHIP, K/9, K/BB, QS ???? Commish called this "normal stuff", is that remotely true? E2: I guess to clarify I've done one league that was normal 5x5 roto then transformed into 4x4 of R, RBI, SB, OPS and IP, K, ERA, WHIP (162 start limit). So I have no basis for H2H. That's a little weird in that in a 6x6 you usually add holds. I do like K/BB (my 7x7 has it). Errors is a little out of nowhere. My 7x7, for reference: R, RBI, SB, HR, AVG, H, TB W, L (), SV, K/BB, ERA, WHIP L used to be Holds but there was a great Gnashing of Teeth and the league voted to switch it to losses, which I hate. I also hate that there are 3 rate stats for pitchers and one rate stat for hitters. With an 8x8 H2H like that I wouldn't even bother with saves, and wouldn't pay up for speed. Emphasize the relievers traditionally devalued because they're 7th/8th inning guys. I call my strategy MASHERS. Fangraphs sleeper list is pretty interesting. Instead of just guessing random lottery tickets, it's a list of projections VS ADP. http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/2016-fantasy-baseball-sleepers/ I think in addition to my yearly strategy that doesn't end up working(TM), I think I'll draft a team based purely on their list. C: Lucroy 1B: Fielder 2B: Pedroia 3B: Beltre SS: Reyes OF: Heyward OF: Braun OF: Hamilton UT: Ortiz SP: Price SP: Lester SP: Darvish SP: Tanaka SP: Liriano Something like that, depending on who's available.

keep 6. 6x6, obp instead of avg, slg and qs added. 225 budget schwarber - $10 rizzo - $25 donaldson - $30 pollock - $10 conforto - $10 david ortiz - $10 carlos santana - $10 scherzer - $21 carrasco - $10 cueto - $10 stroman - $10 liriano - $10 zimmermann - $10 right now: schwarber, rizzo, donaldson, pollock, conforto, and scherzer pretty sure on the first four. not sure about conforto. could easily keep ortiz over him. would love to keep scherzer, but carrasco at $10 is pretty great. thanks in advance. abelwingnut fucked around with this message at 05:11 on Jan 19, 2016 |

stars and scrubs. i usually portion 80-90% of my budget to hitters. but scherzer's an exception. i feel like i don't have to worry about his health any more than i do a hitter. and god knows he'll have the numbers. so yea, i really don't mind going in with scherzer and a bunch of $1 pitchers. i'm pretty good at picking them up through the season.

In that case I would probably stick with what you have. I don't like Conforto so much but I like him compared to Ortiz and Santana. Ortiz finished hot but that guy straight up could not get around on lefties for the first half of 2015. Edit: And since we're doing keepers, I have to keep three hitters and three pitchers, a bunch of my keeper contracts expired (three years max). Waiver players are last round picks. 7x7 H2H with H & TB and L () and K/BB Khris Davis, 19 Rougned Odor, W Kevin Pillar, W Anthony Rendon, 22 (last year) Anthony Rizzo, 7 (last year) Miguel Sano, W Kyle Schwarber, W Adam Conley, W Patrick Corbin, W Kevin Jepsen, W Francisco Liriano, 13 Carlos Martinez, W Andrew Miller, W Matt Moore, W Daniel Norris, 21 Vidal Nuno, W Jake Odorizzi, 21 Carson Smith, W Drew Smyly, 13 Marcus Stroman, W Bold is what I'm thinking now, but I haven't done much other than from the gut. I, too, just stream pitchers off the wire. I'll just redraft Smyly anyway because I just can't quit him. Spoeank fucked around with this message at 06:24 on Jan 19, 2016 |

Odorizzi is probably a better option than Patrick Corbin since half his starts are in the Trop rather than Chase Field. And while I'm here, I might as well ask for suggestions about my keepers. I can keep up to five players; waiver players are 25th round picks (going up a round each if I keep more than one), it's a 10 team 6x6 (with OPS and H) H2H. What I've definitely decided on is: Nolan Arenado (15th) Todd Frazier (21st) Jacob DeGrom (23rd) Noah Syndergaard (W) And then I've narrowed down my last choice to one of the following: Francisco Lindor (W) Sonny Gray (8th) Anthony Rendon (18th) Jackie Bradley Jr. (W) Stephen Piscotty (W) I'm leaning towards Lindor or Gray, and more toward Gray because I think this is the last year I can keep Arenado and Frazier and Gray would definitely help me win this year. mentholmoose fucked around with this message at 13:58 on Jan 19, 2016 |

Gray has had middling peripherals for 2 years in a row now, but people think he's really good because of his lucky low ERA. Steamer is predicting major ERA regression this year so I'm very nervous about Gray.

Are there any particularly good primer articles any of you guys would recommend for a newbie? My background with fantasy is a few years of fantasy football, and I mostly get disengaged because I really am not that into football (which definitely is not the case with baseball). Building on that, will Schwarber still be C eligible in yahoo this year? I have him as a last round keeper, and if he can fill my catcher spot, I'm golden.

I spent time trying to figure that out this morning, because it would help me immeasurably. I don't want to overpay for any of the youngsters, including Correa. I've been bitching about SS in here and the draft thread that went nowhere. I thought it was that they had to have played 10 games at the position the previous year, and for picking it up in the current year they need 10 games or 5 starts. Apparently if they had it the year before, they keep it and only lose it for the next if they don't play 10/start 5. Then again, quote:Manny Machado If he is for some reason still eligible, I am overpaying for him. If not, I am waiting and picking up a combo of Jose Reyes and Didi Gregorious. You might be able to still use Machado at short in Yahoo. I know five games is one of their thresholds but I don't remember if it's just to add it in season or if it's enough to also carry it over to the next year. ESPN I believe requires 20 games, though.

I think you'll be good with either, they were remarkably close last year in those two categories, Arenado is 6 years younger though, so there could be an argument that he has more room to grow/develop than Donaldson. I mean I don't know if there's much room to grow on a 42 HR/ 130 RBI season, but who knows. Bryant absolutely could get to these guy's level, but not sure if he'll be there next year or not. In a re-draft league I'd probably put: Arenado/Donaldson/Machado as the top tier. I don't think there's a super well defined tier 2 as 3b is really deep. Maybe something like: Bryant / Frazier / Carpenter / Beltre / Franco as the next tier, with a bunch of other dudes who could be tier 2 but I'm just not so sure of like: Moustakas / Seager / A-rod / Longoria(what happened to him?) Depends on your league settings too, my league penalizes for Ks so that might impact some of this. Another guy to think about is Miguel Sano, who has huge power potential(18 HR in 80 games last year), but I'm not sure if he'll have 3B eligibility, he played 9 games at 3B last year.
