What sorcery is this? (Then again it doesn't take much to be better than Super Collider)

I mean there's some awful moments (that Mega Man song that's the loving title track is laffo).

But the Conquer and Die+ Lying in State is actually pretty cool (for a thrash band on their 15th album)

Probably best since Endgame (which was criminally underrated), but nowhere near their heyday.

Sound about right? (Yes Dave Mustaine is an rear end in a top hat- opinion without mentioning Dave being a nutjob thx)

Listened to it earlier and it confirms my theory that present-day Megadeth and present day Annihilator are the same band.

I was trying to refute this but I really can't.

I mean, both bands have had mediocre outputs since the early 90s but they have good songs here and there while also releasing absolute garbage. Also their founding guitarist is the only consistent member out of a very inconsistent line-up except for a period in the 90s.

I'd actually say current Annihilator is worse because they went back to Waters as the vocalist. He is soooo bad.

With the exception of one or two bad albums, the Dave Padden era Annihilator is actually my favorite.

Annoyingly enough, that's not as awful as it should be. It's pretty generic Dream Theater, but there wasn't anything bad about it.

Early 2000s me would never believe that I'm saying this, but James Labrie should really quit and focus on his solo albums, which are much better than anything Dream Theater has put out in at least a decade.

The solo album he put out with Peter Wildoer in 2010 was really loving good. Labrie was the weak link by a mile but the tunes were great.

Got my pre-order for Abbath and it is a good album! I've been waiting to listen to it until I got the order. :unsmith:

However, even as a total fanboy, on first listen I have to admit that the first couple of songs kind of all blend together. They are definitely good and have the occasional moments of riffing brilliance sprinkled throughout the first 4 songs, but I wouldn't really say they're memorable. The first song that I think is definitively GREAT is Count the Dead, followed by Fenrir Hunts, Ashes of the Damned and Ocean of Wounds. I think Abbath does the mid-tempo rock n' roll riffing REALLY well, but the biggest surprise to me was the drumming because it's so good, and so present but not too loud in the mix that it drowns stuff out. I will say Abbath's vocals are maybe a little low in the mix though depending on the song.

This review is I think pretty spot on, http://www.angrymetalguy.com/abbath-abbath-review/ , it's a good album but it probably isn't a "classic", it'll end up being your 2nd or 3rd favourite "Immortal" album kind of thing.

The fit and finish of the physical media though is nuts. It may be the prettiest LP I've got, the CD/Booklet/Box set is extremely well-made, the wristband is not a totally cheap piece of poo poo ( not that I will ever wear it... ), even the bloody PIN ( that I also will never wear ) is actually fantastically well made.

It looks like he's still touring too of course so he obviously found some session guys, I think the live show is gonna be loving nuts.

edit: I read a little more and apparently I missed the AWESOME story... the song is about Gabriel communicating to his brother Arhys that he has a plan that he thinks can save them, “but there’s a betrayal theme that’s going on in the story that comes to a head,” says Petrucci.

Oh poo poo. I bet Arhys is secretly working for Lord Nefarius.

Quit putting a positive spin on things, rear end in a top hat!

e: Seriously, though, I kinda see what he means. At least if it was bad it'd be entertaining to make fun of, but we can't even do that with something that's boringly mediocre.

This is some really good poo poo, it's slow by their usual standards, but it just sounds MEAN, even with the orchestral flourishes and the very melodic chorus. The solo at 3:35 is short but sweet. very emotive.

I disagree I think it's the perfect length and I just sat and watched it again without going and doing something else. It feels perfectly encapsulated. The video is 6 minutes long because the last 50 seconds is Nuclear Blast promo material.

Now, you could argue maybe they didn't need to repeat the intro riff so many times at the end there, but we're talking about shaving off like 30 seconds which I don't think really makes or breaks this song. Plus that riff is magical anyway so more of it!

I'm a massive Megadeth fan and while I wouldn't say best since Rust in Peace, it is a really good album. I'm thinking for now Bullet to the Brain, cheesy title aside, is my favorite track of the moment. I'm really digging it though. For me it's probably my favorite since the system has failed. It's definitely better than both Thirteen and Super Collider, which granted isn't tough. I didn't hate either of those albums but they're not my favorites by a long shot.
