Was a while since I heard Cult of Luna. Salvation and Somewhere along the Highway were great, where the latter is their best album according to me.
Eternal Kingdom didn't really capture me, but then again I never liked Nils Holgersson so much.

Some of the band members are also a part of Khoma, another great band, but not as doom as Cult.

I thought Vertikal was great, in part because it was doing something different from straight up Isis worship, but then nothing between that and Salvation really grabbed me because it sounded too much like a not as good Isis to me.

Excited for the new album anyway

Edit: I also always had an inexplicable fondness for Sleep off their first album, it could use editing down but the climax gets me every time.

I'm looking for crazy progressive metal in the vein of Ron Jarzombek's work, such as Blotted Science and Spastic Ink; basically over the top progressive death/thrash with intricate guitar work. One of my favorite bands is Martyr too, they had that sound going.

Looking on spotify I get recommendations for:

- Aghora, which I enjoy. It's basically a Cynic side project, which I love too but isn't exactly what I'm after.
- Canvas Solaris - I listened to a bit of their stuff and didn't really find anything I enjoyed. I don't find their sound very mature.
- Gordian Knot - I really like everything they do.

I could go on and on but I also really enjoy Spiral Architect, Dysrhytmia, Behold the Arctopus... It seems like none of those bands do it as well as Jarzombek though, and right now I'm considering him as the best least-known metal musician I've heard. If anyone has a recommendation I'll gladly take them, as I'm getting tired of listening to Spastik Ink and Blotted Science on repeat... Everything has mentioned has either clean-ish or no vocals at all, but I'm down for whatever. Thanks!

^really good article. I like them a lot. I'm glad they embrace the idea of metal getting bigger and not being all NO FAME WE GOTTA STAY UNDERGROUND. The thought of making a living playing metal kicks rear end and anyone who doesn't actively support that can gently caress off.

Machinations of Dementia is still one of my favorite albums of all time even though I never really liked Jarzombek's work in Watchtower, though that's more a problem of not liking that style of metal. I would strongly suggest checking out Amogh Symphony, specifically Quantum Hack Code. You also might like Panzerballett for over-the-top instrumental metal, though they're about halfway between jazz and metal so maybe that's not quite what you're looking for.

Along with Alarum, already recommended above, they're one of my favorites for this kinda thing.

edit: At this point, you might also try branching into the tech/prog-thrash scene of the late '80s and early '90s that Voivod and (Ron Jarzombek again) Watchtower had a part in starting. Here's a good start:

You need to check out Deathrow, contemporaries of Watchtower and probably an influence on Jarzombek:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyayloODWrc

As for Spiral Architect, as well as associated groups like Lunaris, Trivial Act, and Manitou, I'd suggest more obscure prog stuff like Psycho Symphony and Memento Waltz (those names should tip you off to their main influence, who are also worth checking out)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvvdsMaQD0U
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01gZ8qRQJzg
e: oh and how could I forget Zero Hour and Power of Omens? Or Thessera?

I really enjoy Thought Chamber's stuff when I'm in the mood for turbo-wankery. They're a total Dream Theater clone but I've always enjoyed them way more than any DT material, maybe because they focus on instrumentals and have an actually competent vocalist.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_pXjAzhKmw

Steamforged have some really neat keyboard/guitar wankery bits:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aU6rywy1v0

I do suggest giving Canvas Solaris another try - they're less wanky and more of a psychedelic jam-band sort of thing. This song really does the trick for me:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qv6tGmmr7sc

As for Martyr: Disembarkation, Neuromist, Cromm Cruac

This is pretty good advice. You'll probably dig Mekong Delta, Confessor, early Sieges Even, Aftermath, Thought Industry (though they're closer to Dillinger Escape Plan + Faith No More, as opposed to pure tech thrash), and Skeptic Sense (a personal favorite obscurity)
