CH25: Why is it that you have betrayed us?

It was time to go after Exodus and finish the job.

: I summoned them here, although fewer came than I had hoped.

: That fool. He abandoned his duty to Nia Khera.
: Your Highness, perhaps a few words.
: Once, we turned our swords upon each other and fought for control of Rieze Maxia.
Today, we come together not as enemies, but as allies.
We have already located the enemy's headquarters, a ship known as the Zenethra.
Fear not the battle to come, brothers. United, we will not falter.
Together, we shall reclaim our world!
Soldiers: Hoorah!
Huzzah!
: Launch the ship.
: Of course, things started to go wrong immediately.
Female Soldier: Y-Your Highness!
We have detected a high-energy channeling circle surrounding all of Rieze Maxia.
Here it comes!

: What's happening? It's like my mana's being sucked dry.
: I know this feeling!
: They're using the Lance of Kresnik to absorb the entire world's mana!
: The Spirit-fuel Plan.
I won't let them hurt our people. I will protect Rieze Maxia!
Make us airborne!
: For the humans, the drain was painful but not immediately dangerous.

: It would seem the channeling circle has no effect at this altitude.
: Are you okay?
: I've got an awful headache.
: Better have you looked at in the infirmary. I'll come with you.
: What's wrong?
: Where did Milla go?
: I do not see her.
: I'll go find her.

Milla Side posted:

: Why can't I shake this dreadful feeling?
Is my doubt causing this, too?
: There you are. I've been looking for you.
Mind if I join you?
: Sure.
It's funny. I was once able to soar like this whenever I wished.
But I'm not sure I realized just how beautiful the world is until now. I suppose I took it for granted.
: Hey, Milla?
We talked about this before, but... When this battle is over...
: Yes?
: Actually, never mind.
: I see.
Jude, there's something I need to tell you.
It's about me, about who I really am.
: What do you mean?
: I never meant for this to happen, but in the end I lied to you.
: Hey! Loverboy! Get over here!
: Wait, what do you mean you lied?
: She's calling you. You should go. We can finish this conversation later.
: A-All right.

: Something up?
: "Something up?" Look who's tall and mighty now.
: We've found the Zenethra.
: So it's time.
: Jude!
: Bad news, kid. They say a whole fleet of flying battleships is gathering around the Zenethra!
: What?!

Milla Side posted:

: Am I afraid that Jude will learn the truth?
Hehehe.
As if the Four could really come.
What's happening?!

: Jude, what was that?
: Sorry I'm late.
: It was just like the Lance of Kresnik, wasn't it?!
: No doubt the Zenethra was the actual source of that light.
: And I think that it put another hole in the schism.
: You're right. At least no ships were able to come through this time.
: Maybe they sent the mana they gathered back to Elympios.
: Looks like your fuel-plan theory was right.
: It seems like the only time that I'm right is when I'm talkin' about a worst-case scenario.
: Wait a minute.
Haha! Well, lookie there!

: Enemy ship approaching! Everyone, brace for impact!

: Incidentally, those airships have terrible gun directors. They can't hit a drat thing if they're moving much, even at less than a ship length.
: I'm surprised you know what a "gun director" is.
: Hey, I hung out around smart people.

: There's our welcoming committee.

: Silence all of them!

We fight a battle which I declined to show, because the enemy was :mediocre:

: They just keep on coming!
: (Is this all you've got? Pathetic!)
: Gaius!
: Helmsman!
Maintain course and ram into the Zenethra!
: All right, fine, if you say so!
Just don't try to blame me if we crash and burn!

THe Zenethra's got a sort of u-shaped semi-catamaran thing going on.

: I'm going to point out that, as smart as Jude is most of the time, he can do some really dumb things, like going first without checking to see who's coming with him.

: Fortunately Milla was able to save him.

: The nearby ships were pumping out a continuous stream of enemies. However...
: Enough!
Naughty children must learn to play nice!

: That was great. I really enjoyed that.

: Any reason you couldn't have just wrecked the Zenethra too?
: They could have countered it with the Lance of Kresnik if I used it on them directly.

: That was incredible.
: I seem to have regained my powers thanks to your tethering.
: I never imagined you would possess such power.
: Of course! She's your big sis!
: I'm glad you're on our side.
: I am happy to lend my power to your cause.
: What are you planning to do?
: The mission would fail if the ship were to fall, yes?
: I see. It sounds like we'll have to continue asking for your assistance.
: Thank you, Muzét. Take care.
: Be safe.
Milla, never forget that you are Maxwell.
: ......
: At that point, I flew off to hunt down anybody else who thought about interfering.
: We must act quickly, while the enemy reinforcements are being blocked.
: We should split into two groups.

: I know. "Do what must be done," right?
: We will put a stop to their plans right here.
Our targets are Gilland and the Lance of Kresnik.
: At your service, Lady Milla.
: You again?
: Hey! Stay out of our way!
: Ha ha ha, but of course! I shall join Gaius' capable crew.
: What?
: Think you can fill Jiao's shoes in the Chimeriad?
: Easily!
: ......
: Just watch me!
: Let's go.
: Guess they know a winner when they see one, phony!
: Get over here, idiot.
: How rude! But, I shall let it slide.
: Al...
: What.
: Try not to die.
: Let's go.
We lose the ability to have Jude summon Muzet here.

: The ship was still full of Elympian soldiers and Exodus agents, of course.

Yeah these guys are chumps. At some point after this I bump the difficulty a bit.

: What is this?
: It's called a radio.
Handy gizmo. You use it to communicate far distances.
Soldier: We captured one of the intruders. Deploy all combat personnel immediately.
: Whoa, it can talk!
: Hahaha.
: What do you want with me? Who do you think you're talking to!
You can't do this! I will not lose again!
: Sounds like Ivar got caught. Should we rescue him?
: Only after we've finished everything else.
: BURN! Oh, and then everything started shaking.
: What's happening?
: A great number of spirits have perished again.
: Sounds like they used the Lance of Kresnik again.
: We have to hurry!

Skit Video: Aboard the Zenethra

: Sorry, kid. I don't know the way.
: Gilland and I don't really get along. It's been twenty years since I've been here.
: You always fail when we need you most!
: Aw, cut me some slack.
Look, I'll make it up to you. When we see that Celsius chick, I'll take her down.
: You said you wanted to kill Gilland!
: Oh, did I?
: I can't believe you!
: Well, if you do remember anything, let us know, okay?
: Truth is... I'd rather not remember.

Skit Video: On the Trial of the Four

: We have to find it and free the Four Great Spirits!
: Especially since they're Milla's friends!
: Yes... The Four might understand the reason I'm so conflicted.
: Milla?
: Oh, it's nothing. Don't worry about it.
: Keep spacing out like that and we'll have to leave you here.
: Heh. Well now, you've grown quite brazen with the Lord of Spirits.
It is you who should worry abut keeping up with me!
: All right! That's the Milla we know!
: We'll be right behind you!

: It's like a mansion in here.
: I thought this was a battleship?
: No. The E.S.S. Zenethra was a cruise ship that plied Elympios oceans.
It ended up here twenty years ago when part of the schism ruptured.
: Wait a minute.
That's when the Elympion army broke through the schism.
: They did what?
: How could they break through from Elympios without the Lance of Kresnik?
: I don't know the details.
: The original Lance of Kresnik was developed by the Elympion army.
: What do you know about it?
: Not much more.
I know the current Lance of Kresnik was modeled after it.
: And your people made it because they wanted spirits?
: Elympios is a world built on and developed around spyrix.
They're the foundation of our entire civilization.
: Why can't you find a different foundation for your civilization?
: I bet all Elympios people are big, fat, lying barbarians just like Alvin.
: Oh, now I'm a barbarian as well as a liar?
: It's not as simple as just giving up spyrixes for some other technology.
We're not like you. We don't have mana lobes.
: Wait, what?!
: We can't wield spirit artes. We lack the ability to manipulate mana.
: So you used spyrixes instead.
: Exactly.

: Ooh, pretty!
: Careful. Touch one and you'll be sliced in two.
: What?!
: What should we do?
Engineer: Security report! We've energized the barrier bars in the central sector. However, we're having trouble activating them in other sectors.
Soldier: What?! Is something wrong with the generators?
Engineer: Negative. Both generators are functioning normally. The malfunction must lie elsewhere.
Soldier: We can't disengage the central barrier bars. Use every available soldier to guard the port and starboard generators. Defend them with your lives.
Engineer: Yes, sir!
: Good timing.
: It appears these bars will disappear if we disable the generators on the port and starboard sides.
: Okay, let's find them.

Skit Video: Milla the Conflicted

: Milla, you're bleeding! Stop for a second!
: Huh? I hadn't noticed. They must have caught me off guard.
: Haha, even the mighty Maxwell needs to keep her head in the game.
: As if I wouldn't know that!
: Sorry.
: It's okay.
: There you go, all taken care of. Let's keep going.
: ......

Skit Video: Elympions

: Ah, sorry. That was a lie. I don't have a mana lobe, so I can't channel anything.
: Yet your weapon doesn't seem to be spyrix-based.
: Even I'm not foolish enough to pack spyrix around the Lord of Spirits.
: What's it like to not have a mana lobe?
: It feels perfectly normal to me. What's it feel like to have one?
: Is it fun being able to control spirits?
: I wouldn't say "fun", exactly.
: It does have its downsides.
: Like, our skill with spirit artes pretty much determines our future.
: Ah, yeah, that doesn't apply to spyrix. It's the same for everyone.
: Indeed. It kills spirits regardless of who uses it.
: Aw, come on. Don't look at me like that.
We may not have mana lobes, but the people of Elympios are still the human beings you love so much.

:siren: DUNGEON VIDEO :siren:

This is probably my favorite dungeon in the game. It's atmospheric and has a decent length to it, but it mostly fits on one map screen (there's a little bit off to the right) and isn't utterly confusing. Your goal here is to get to the two far right rooms to disable the generators. You might want to take a quick look at the dungeon video to take in the ambience. You probably shouldn't watch all of it.

: How do you disable one of these things?
: It takes a gentle touch.

One down, one to go.

: Alvin.
:On it.

: Guess who was waiting for a climactic final showdown!

: How considerate of you to deliver Maxwell right to me.
Tell me, Alfred Vint Svent. Why is it that you have betrayed us?
: It's simple. Because the truth is I've always despised you.
: I see, so you're prepared to spend the rest of your life in Rieze Maxia.
: Like that matters to me.
: Heh heh heh.

: Huh? How'd you do that?!
: I didn't feel any spirits die!
What's going on?
: Eat this!

: There it is. It's that spirit again!

: I see, so you're Maxwell? You look quite a bit different now.

: Yes, master.
: What the heck was that? Why're you taking orders from that big jerk?
: It's only natural for tools to obey their wielders.
: The only tool here is you! Spirits and humans are supposed to live in harmony!
: My servant here is hardly your garden-variety type spirit.
She's actually a spyrite.
: What?
: We used boosters to recreate the spirit Celsius from the spirit fossil in which she lay dormant.
She is the physical manifestation of a spirit arte itself.
: So now you're using the spyrite's mana to perform artes?!
: Heh, and that's why she's a tool. Does it all make sense now?
: How could you?! You're despicable!
: So that's why you took Teepo's data?! How could you do that to him?!
: Little lady, I need to personally thank you for that.
It told us precisely how to give birth to the spyrites.
And how to turn Rieze Maxia into energy.
I take it those aren't tears of joy, little lady?
: ......
: How can you be such a monster?!
: Conductor. I thought the curtain closed on your career long ago.
Why insist on an encore even now?
: I'll have you know that I'm as stubborn as my king, Gilland.
And I'm not about to forgive you for toying with his life!
: We won't lose to you! No way!
: Hmph. Is that supposed to frighten me? You really should know your place, boy.
You don't have the power or ambition to make good on such threats!
: You of all people have no right to talk of power or ambition!
What do you know? You use them both for your twisted objectives!
: I have little interest at all in continuing this conversation, but answer this one question.
Do you know the difference between you and Jude?
: Hah! As if I care.
: As I thought.
And that's exactly what makes you a fool.
: The Lance is spooling up to absorb more mana.
Come Maxwell, I'll allow you to live.
However--

: The rest of you will die.
: I will protect all in Rieze Maxia, people and spirits alike!
: That's it, Gilland. This madness ends right now!

Here we go.

Gilland is weaker than Celsius but has more annoying attacks, so he must go first.

He's got a gun, but unlike Alvin he has no sword.

Scatter Bolt hits a cone in front of him with electricity.

Ice-Claw Spin does what it says it does.

You've seen Swallow Dance before.

Incendiary Arc creates a volcano under someone.

Frost Spears causes a rain of icicles in a line.

These guys haven't healed yet, but I remember them doing so in the past (and it caused the fight to drag on for over 30 minutes) so gently caress them, I'm taking all their stuff.

Zero Divide fires a shot up, which then comes in from off screen to the side

Thanks Leia, why don't you take a breather while I sub in someone who's good with elemental weaknesses.

Stalagmite sends several spears of ice up from the ground.

Ice Raid is some kind of charge attack. Celsius is out of luck though, we've got elemental resistances on. This is hard difficulty but it's not too bad.

I equipped a skill on Milla that makes her go to 100% life when revived, no matter how little HP is restored. No more life bottle whack-a-mole :toot:

I can't recall offhand, but I'm pretty sure Alvin has an identical Squall Shot arte.

Ice Blade Thrust leaps forward and stabs down at the landing.

That feather represents the Revive status, which means I'll auto-res when I die. Thanks Elize.

Celsius has an overlimit, but I don't think a Mystic Arte. They probably could have reused Rowens, which I don't think I've shown yet.

We're fighting in the Lance room, but the stairs up have a tendency to pop in and out.

Gilland likewise has an overlimit but no MA. I really wish he did, considering his importance.

Snare Shot has a large projectile but I don't think it actually, well, snares you. Well, it dazed Milla so maybe that's why they call it that.

Ice-Blade Deluge suuuucks because if it hits you even a bit you get frozen solid for a bit.

Merciless Trigger hits an area ahead of the blast 3 or 4 times per person.

Banishing Ray sucks because he sweeps it back and forth across an arc and can hit you multiple times, even far away.

I think Heal Shot is supposed to heal Celsius, but I either interrupted him or didn't notice it.

Poison Shell didn't poison anyone, so your guess is as good as mine.

So Milla's Mystic Arte's final damage seems to be either all-elemental or non-elemental. I'm not entirely sure why Celsius is resisting it.

: They were hoping Gilland going down would make Celsius stop, but no such luck.

Milla's Sunburst spell just isn't as effective as it looks like it should be.

Cold Prison summons one big ice stalagmite.

Icy Calamity encases her in a shell of ice, which then explodes.

Three levels for almost everyone.

: Guh!

: It was over. Milla's team won, and Gilland had lost.
: No, not now. Not when we finally created a spyrite. drat it.
: The only thing you really want to do is gain favor with the outside to boost your influence.
What's the point in making these spyrites, or whatever you call them?
: Spyrites are different from spyrix devices. They allow us to wield incredible power without consuming spirits.
Elympios is overflowing with people and technology. And we need spyrites to sustain ourselves.
: What're you talking about?

: So that is why you implemented the Otherworld Reactor Plan.
: But it's your fault for getting hooked on spyrix to begin with. Now you have to live with the consequences.
: But if spyrites become commonplace, the people of Elympios will have all the mana they need.
: Isn't it a bit late for that?
You were the ones who chose to rely on spyrix 2,000 years ago!
: That wasn't me!
: ......

: Hey, are you okay?!

: Ergh! Ahhhh!
: Is he dead now?
: Perhaps that was the price he had to pay for using Celsius.
: It was a high price to pay, even for that much power.

: Has everything been settled now?
: You just missed it.
: This doesn't feel right. Not at all.
: Exodus must abandon their plans. They must be forced to for the sake of Rieze Maxia.
: Right.

: Milla released the Four from the Lance, then resummoned them.

: Good to see you all again.
: Maxwell.
: Even you won't interfere here.
I'll destroy it.
: But as Milla ordered the Four into position...

: ...something began to attack the entire area.

: (Such power!)
: What the hell is this arte?
: It hurts. Make it stop.
: Did Gilland set a trap for us?!
: Come on! Use your artes, for crying out loud!
: I can't. It's far too powerful!
: Grrrr!
This is nothing I can't handle. I'll break through this arte!
: Break through?
That's it! Use the Lance of Kresnik! It has the power to dispel artes!
: That's true.
: Can we even do that? Isn't it out of mana?
: If everybody here can just focus their mana into the Lance, then maybe...
: Ah ha ha! So you're saying we should willingly give that thing power?
: It could mean the death of us.
: We're dead either way. We have no choice.
: Uuuuuurgh!

: Milla could still move (with a little help from the Four and the Aspyrixus).
: drat it! Hurry up already!
I... I can't take it anymore.
: Now Maxwell, activate the Lance.
: Milla...
: There is no need for everyone to risk their lives.
: Wait, what?

: The arte's crushing grip was beginning to break the glass floor.
: What are you doing?! Aren't you supposed to stick around, to help protect the world?
There are still so many things left you need to do!
: With the schism gone, Exodus' plan will come to an end.
Isn't that right?
: What?
: No!
I want you to win, but not if that means losing you!
: Let it go.
: What are you doing?! I have to save her! Can't you see! Milla's going to kill herself!
Don't do this! Please!

: Milla...
: Don't do it!
: Please reconsider!
: Urgh.
: You can't do this.
: Huh?
: Milla.
If you leave us, then what?
You can't!
: You'll be fine without me.
: ......
: Farewell. Goodbye, Jude.

: She used all her own mana, as well as contributions from the Four.
: Mi--

: The arte was dispelled.
: Millaaaaaaa!
Milla?!

: Nothing left at all.

: The damage to the ship had been done however. They couldn't save her, and they might not be able to save themselves.
: Nooooooo!

: Uh...
: Hey, don't give me that look.

: Anyway, there's no way Milla was actually dead.
: Nope. She was totally dead.

: Life crushed, body dissolved, soul moved on. That's about as dead as you can get.

Milla Side posted:

I'm not 100% sure what the deal is with these lines, or even if all of them are in the actual game experience. I'll see what Feinne records.

You're still here? I told you to leave with Jude and the others.
I'm sorry. I dragged you into this.
Well, well, you've certainly changed, haven't you?
I just want to live as Maxwell, that's all.
And that's an excuse to off yourself, huh?
I know it conflicts with my mission.
Then don't! Don't do it!
I don't want to disappoint Jude.
When he's watching me...
I want to be like this. I want to be the Maxwell that he respects.
What does Maxwell have to fear?
So that's what it was. I finally understand. I've become afraid. Afraid of loss.

That's both Naruto and filler. I wouldn't use it as a basis for anything of even minor quality.

I personally would like to get chattier, but, uh, I've played all the way through Xillia 1 and 2 multiple times, so most of my comments would be rather large spoilers. I try to stay quiet for that reason.

  • I'm getting pretty sick and tired of Milla's non-explanations which have to be dragged out of her with wild horses. I'm very tired of the "I have a big secret... which I will not tell you right now" bit.
  • I think Agria must have some kind of muscle disorder.
  • Why would anyone put Ivar in charge of anything, much less steering the ship. Why
  • Muzet can suddenly levitate and crush multiple battleships with just a little link with Jude? I know he doesn't use his head for much but that's still highly unlikely. Hello final boss Muzet?
  • Ah ha ha Gaius's group used Ivar as a distraction to get caught so they could go do other things.
  • You don't often see a boss who uses a double-barreled shotgun. That's pretty cool.
  • Oh look, Muzet betrayed the party and tried to kill them all with her super-arte. Gee if only someone had seen that coming. Oh wait, it was me.
  • I guess that was the end of Disc 2, then? I guess the good news is that Ivar is dead because he was in a cell on the ship.

He kinda has a point, too. He really can't be blamed for the energy choices of a civilization which were made 2000 years before he was born.

On another note, if the Rieze Maxia people have "mana lobes" and the other guys do not, it seems to me like they are two different species regardless of how alike they look. Plus if they have no mana lobes for peaceful symbiosis with spirits, that probably also contributed to the spyrix stuff.

That gets expounded upon later, Stabbey, though I don't recall if it's in Xillia or Xillia 2. It's not really a plot-important thing, just a little piece of one-off world building conversation, but I'll shove it in a spoiler tag just in case.

Elympions do have mana lobes, but they're vestigial. Since the people of Elympios haven't relied on them for 2,000 years, they've gone into evolutionary atrophy. Sort of like the appendix, except Elympions know what the original purpose of the mana lobe actually was.

Elympions do have mana lobes, but they're vestigial. Since the people of Elympios haven't relied on them for 2,000 years, they've gone into evolutionary atrophy. Sort of like the appendix, except Elympions know what the original purpose of the mana lobe actually was.

I wasn't trying to say that Elympions and Maxians are completely unrelated, but I can see how I could have been interpreted like that, so that's my fault.

A functional versus non-functional organ still seems like a marker of a different species. That and 2000 years separation might be enough. Geographical isolation is a big factor in the creation of offshoot species.

During WW2, the bombings of London, people used to use the subway/tube system for shelter. Mosquitos followed the humans down there, and even after the war ended, a population of mosquitos remained below. Today, mosquitos from the surface and mosquitos from the tube system can almost never reproduce together. It can still happen on rare occasions, but after such a short timespan, they're basically different species. Of course, mosquito generations are much faster than human generations, but still.

Pretty much, the problem is the timeframe, not the process. 2k years is not enough for that to happen in humans, but since when writers ever got the timeframes right for this kind of stuff?

Basically. Rieze Maxians and Elympions aren't so far removed from each other that they can no longer interbreed--we have sufficient evidence of that.

I suppose another way to look at it would be to say since Elympions never use their mana lobes, they never develop into a useful organ as the person in question grows to adulthood.

CH26: Was She Carrying Our Budget?

: So uh Jude didn't take Milla's death very well. I wasn't helping.
: (Milla, why did you have to die?)
(What am I supposed to do now?)
(My mission was to help Milla.)
(How did it end up like this?)

Incidentally, they seem to be hiding out in Elize's old shed. Hamil's a great place to hide since it's like 80% abandoned houses.
: But nobody seems to be able to get ahold of Alvin.
: ......

: Don't. Just stop.
: Again? Jude, you gotta stop doing this. If you keep this up, we're going to run out of food.
I'll make you some more. Be right back.
: ......
: drat it.

: A deal I made with Muzét.
: Oh.

: So uh I might have done a few things to make them afraid of me.
: (Muzét.)
(Milla's big sister.)

: (She attacked us.)
: After all...
Anyone who learns about the schism...
Will have to die.
It is my mission.
: Yeah. A bunch of old men and women aren't exactly something I can be proud of. Anyway, end flashback.
: Go ahead.
Do whatever you want.

: You always try to go with the flow. You really piss me off, you know!

: Alvin was having a lot of trouble actually doing it.
: Stop!

: Ergh!
: Urgh!

: Not to criticize, but Leia really should have grabbed the gun when she took off.
: Come on!
: Hey!

: Jude's will to live had stopped working, along with most everything else.
: You've got to listen to me, Jude! Remember Milla's mission! She sacrificed her life for it! Now get up!

: Milla's... mission...

So based on this scene, the party (minus Milla) survived by swimming to port.
: (She gave it her all. She sacrificed her life...)
(...for the people of Rieze Maxia.)

: (was to protect...)
(everyone.)
: What do you mean her mission?
How absurd!
She was just the bait, created to lure out Gilland and people like him.
None else mattered to her. Understand? Certainly not a sense of duty or justice. None that mattered to her whatosever.
: And yet she worked so hard, didn't she?

: In my defense Jude was really annoying to try to kill. Stupid life bottles.
: (Her mission meant nothing.)

: Up here!
: And this is why Milla was normally the party leader. Who'd try to get away from the man with the best ranged weapon around by hiding on a exposed catwalk with one exit?

: Stop right there.
: I won't let you hurt him. I can't let you do this!
: It's over. You've got nowhere left to run!
: No, it's not over! Open your eyes already!
drat you, Alvin!

: Every drat thing we did was pointless!

: Pointless?

: (It wasn't pointless.)
(I met Milla.)
(I traveled with her.)
(She made me think.)
(She taught me many things.)

: (However...)

: But why drat it?
The sky is as red as it's ever been. I still can't see Elympios.
If the schism wasn't dispelled--
Then why'd I let her die? What was the point?
She died for nothing.
: (Milla died for nothing?)

: That's not true!

: Listen! Everybody is still here! Elize is, and so is Rowen!
I'm sure Gaius and the others are too! She saved our lives!
: Saved our lives? For what?
She's gone now, isn't she?!

: We're just plain old human beings. We can't be like her!

: (We kept going because of her.)
(But, in the end...)
(We could never be like her.)
: Jude, did you not realize how conflicted Milla was?
She was torn between her mission to protect the schism and the actions that could eventually lead to her own death.
: (Milla.)
: Hehe. It's no wonder that she never found her answer. Her existence and her mission were just lies that were given to her.
: (Humans and spirits alike were precious to her.)
(So precious that she valued them over her own life.)

: Incidentally I cannot recall how Jude escaped that.
: Milla finally gave you something to live for, and I suppose that made you very happy.
Too bad it was all for nothing. All that time you spent with her, all those feelings you have... Time to set them aside.
: (Set them aside?)

: Milla saved your life. You can't throw it away! Don't you understand, Jude?
: Milla saved my life. She saved me.
: Thank you so much, Leia.

: Huh?

: I just love his expression here.
: Leia!

: Alvin!
: Jude, this is your fault!

: Honestly this fight was determined by who was more together mentally.

So, uh. This fight sucks for three reasons. The first is that it's a solo fight with Jude, who I'm totally out of practice with (and don't like that much), the second is that there's no opportunity to change the difficulty between when you fight Gilland and this, and the third, and most important, is that it's optional-win, so you can't retry until you get it right. So gently caress trying to deal with 35k.

I'm going to say I'm totally not ashamed of this. I am ashamed that I'm so drat out of practice, though.

This fight is probably a lot easier if you do Jude's gimmick correctly and just constantly teleport behind him, but :effort:

Honestly I was so surprised I'd pulled it off correctly I kind of sat there for a second. It could have gotten really, really embarrassing if I'd died.

Alvin can overlimit, and might be able to Mystic Arte you at higher difficulties. It occurs to me that I've only showed off Jude's and Milla's. I should rectify that.

He's worth a fair chunk.

: Leia was hit in the shoulder, so she didn't die.

: Not that Jude was bothering to help.

: drat it.
Hey, just go ahead and kill me already.
: ......!
Kill you? How can you even say that to me?!
Milla saved your rotten life! Don't be so eager to just throw it away!
Don't you get it?! Milla died because she wanted us to live!
She didn't die so we would-- So we'd end up like this.
: Well then, what the hell should we be doing?!
I'm not Milla! I can't live like her!
I don't have a mission to fulfill!
: She's not here to hold our hands anymore. We have to think for ourselves now.
: Think for ourselves how?!
: No one is gonna make our decisions for us anymore!
And no one... No one will take responsibility for our actions ever again!
: ......
: Even if Milla's mission was all a lie…
: The truth is, she was still willing to put her life on the line to fulfill it.
It's not a matter of if you can or can't. It's a matter of whether you do or don't.
: Jude, you...
: Why'd it take me this long to figure out what Milla was trying to tell us?
: Let's get moving, Alvin.

: He's still not checking on Leia. Terrible doctoring.

: Thank goodness.
: Jude, are you okay?
: I'm fine. Just fine. Don't worry about me.
: Okay.
Where's Alvin?
: I don't know. He took off.
: Leia. Thank you.
: Huh? For what?
: For watching over me for so long. Thanks.
: Jude, did something happen I don't know about?
: I just realized something. No, you helped me realize something.
And for that I thank you.
: You're welcome.
: I'm going to search for Maxwell.
: But Milla is...
: No, Maxwell is somewhere else.
Remember what Muzét said? Milla was just the bait to protect the schism.
That would mean someone else was using Milla as a decoy.
: It wasn't Muzét?
: No, it couldn't have been. If it was, why would she appear before us?
There'd be no point in a decoy.
: So that's why you think Maxwell is somewhere else out there?
: Yeah.
You haven't tossed the food on the floor yet. You're a much nicer patient than I was.
: You can say that again!
: So, when are you leaving?
: As soon as you're better.
: I'm fine. I'm a tough girl, remember?
: Leia... Am I the reason you've pushed yourself so hard?
: What do you mean?
: I know I always stick my nose into other people's business. I'm wondering now if that ended up hurting you.
Please, you can be honest.

: I had... I had to grow strong 'cause I couldn't stand the thought of seeing you sad again.
: Then I'll be stronger, so you won't have to.

: All better?
: Yup, perfect.
So, where should we go?
: I want to talk to Muzét, but we're no match for her right now.
I was thinking of searching for Ivar.
: Yeah, I guess a handmaid might know about this stuff.
That is, if he survived.
Oh, who am I kidding? That guy's like a cockroach!
: Hahaha.

: Jude!
: Huh?

: Easy, Teepo! Easy! Good to see you!
: You came all the way out here for us?
: Of course!
: We heard that Muzét began attacking the fleeing Exodus and Elympios soldiers.
We grew concerned for your safety.
: She never tracked you down?
: We've been on the run. So far, we've managed to elude her.
What about you?
: Alvin found us.
: You saw that big fat liar?
: Yes, we sure did.
: I see. I'm sad to hear that.
What will you two do now?
: We're going to look for Maxwell.
: We can see Milla again?!
: No. Jude believes there's a real Maxwell out there.
: I see. That thought never occurred to me, although it would explain much.
: If you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.
: Hohoho! The honors student is now the teacher. You've certainly come a long way, young man.
: Anyway, we're planning to find Ivar first.
We'll deal with Muzét later. Just thinking about her scares me.
: Jude, have you heard about Gaius?
: No, nothing.
: For whatever reason, he's begun a large-scale operation in Fennmont.
It caught Muzét's attention. She's attacked the city relentlessly, but he's driven her off each time.
: Leia, this'll be a dangerous journey. You still okay with coming along?
: Of course!
: I'm coming too!
: I'd like that, but are you sure?
: We want to know if Milla was a phony or not!
: Although, that doesn't change the fact that she's still our friend.
: I have my own reasons for wishing to meet with Gaius.
: Thanks, guys.

Since that fight earlier is optional-win, there's a different cutscene if you lose.

: ......
: Urgh.

: Typical kid. How can you be so eager to just roll over and give up?! Sometimes you make me wanna puke, you know that?!
: What else do you expect?! Now that Milla's gone!
Tell me. What am I supposed to do?
: You think you're the only one who's lost?!
We let her sacrifice her life for us.
: She died because she wanted us to live.
She didn't die so we would... end up doing this.
: Well then, what the hell should we be doing?!
I'm not Milla! I can't live like her!
And I don't have a mission to fulfill!
: Milla's not here to hold our hands anymore. We have to think for ourselves.
: How do we do that?!
: No one will make our decisions for us!
And no one... No one will take responsibility for our actions anymore.
: ......
: Even if Milla's mission was all just a big lie...
The truth is she still put her life on the line to fulfill it.
It's not a matter of if you can or can't. It's a matter of whether you do or don't.
: Why?
: Tell me, drat it! Why?! Why do you always have the answer?!

: Urgh!
There's a gunshot as it cuts away, but since everything after this is the same, he must have shot the ground or something.

I got a good laugh out of this part when I first played the game. If you didn't watch the video, there's a significant pause between the second and third lines there, during which I thought to myself, "Fat chance of that, Leia, dude's like a cockroach." And then Leia immediately mirrors my thoughts, prompting my laughter. Either strange minds thought alike or Ivar is just THAT persistent. Bit of both, I'd guess.

By all reports they were seriously rushing Xillia out the door in order to meet the Tales 15th Anniversary date. They got out a (mostly) quality product, but a few areas really suffered. The endgame is... a bit compact compared to everything up til now. Unfortunately, it's only going to get worse from here.

I might have those Kanbalar Milla scenes up in the next couple of days, been traveling so much for work recently that recording on any reliable schedule is tricky.

There's an extra scene or so on Milla's side that isn't on Jude's before NG+ starts but after the Zenethra but that'll wait for a bit later in the plot.

But yeah otherwise I'm almost done, Milla's game just is shorter which is a shame since she's way more fun to play than Jude.

CH27: She was Never a Person

: Time to head out, but there was one curious thing to look at before they left

: Look, there's a spirit fossil!
What's it doing here? Its mana is completely gone.
: It's because Elympion soldiers used a spyrix here.
: What? Elympion soldiers were here?!
: Yeah. The day after I fought with Alvin.
You had a terrible fever from your injury, so I'm not surprised you didn't notice.
: Did you beat them?
: No. They were just passing through here as they fought with soldiers from Rashugal.
All I did was hide out in the shed. Pretty lame, I know.
: I'm surprised you didn't step out and fight.
: If I'd gone out there and gotten killed, you'd have been all alone.
What I really need to do lies elsewhere.
Now come on, let's go.
: Yeah, you're right.
: I think we might be coming back to this.
: Oh?

Skit Video: A New Departure

: Yeah. Maybe he's grown a little tougher?
: Young men can mature dramatically in very short periods of time.
: Jude seems to have found the resolve to confront the harsh truths of the world.
: Women grow up too, you know!
: We have no choice but to.
: Yes.
: So you can grow big bazongas like Milla!
: That's... That's not the sort of growing up we mean!
: Hahaha.
: I shall do whatever I must to see you all safely into adulthood.

Skit Video: Stress Relief

: Are you getting tired?
: Ah, a little bit. Things aren't the same as they used to be.
: Hey, Elize, can we borrow Teepo for a sec?
: Huh?!
: Give Teepo a squeeze. You'll feel better.

: Oh! This does feel good! Just the right amount of resistance.
I could do this all day!
: No, stop! I can't take anymore!
: Ahhh. All the stress has drained through my fingers.
: I know, right? It's crazy addictive.
: Oh no... He's going to get all stretched out.
: I feel so violated.

: While they were leaving, mysterious things were going on!

: Lord Maxwell! Please answer me!
: Someone must have been influencing Milla, possibly controlling her.
: Why am I no longer receiving orders?!
: Did the Four share with her the truth? Impossible. They would never disobey my command.
Hmm.
What... What should I do?!
Milla, why did you stray from the path? I know not what to make of this.

Skit Video: Interrogator Elize

: Pretty much.
: Did you cook for him?
: Yeah, sure.
: And anything else?
: L-Like what?
: Elize, if you have something you want to say, come say it to me straight!
: You're the one who needs to be telling it straight!
: Nothing happened, okay! Nothing at all!
: Uh...
: Boooring.
: That's too bad.
: You'll get him next time!
: drat it, Elize... I can't believe you had Teepo bad-cop me like that.

: So they arrived at Fenmont at a good time.

: What's going on?!
Woman: Aaah!
Somebody help!
: This is terrible!
: And unfortunately, not surprising. Elympion soldiers are popping up in cities across Rieze Maxia.
: Because Gilland's gone now?
: That's part of it, no doubt. But on top of that...

: He's terrified.
It's Muzét, isn't it?
: She's been swatting 'em like flies.
: Stop!

:mediocre:

Elympion: Urgh...
Rashugal Soldier: Freeze, all of you!
: So you survived after all.
: Gaius!
: Throw him in a cell.
These people are with me.
Elympion: Stop it! Let me go!
Rashugal Soldier: Come quietly or else!
Elympion: All of Elympios will die at this rate! What did we do to deserve this?!
: Gilland said the same thing.
: Wow, Gaius! When did you start ordering around Rashugal troops?
: Everyone in Rashugal succumbed to terror and panic after Nachtigal's death.
I led them from the chaos.
: Wow, that's some trick!
: What exactly are you doing here in Fennmont?
: We are working with the Rashugal military to salvage the Lance of Kresnik from the bottom of the ocean.
: Why? What do you want with the Lance now?
: Exodus may be gone, but it's unlikely they've abandoned their Otherworld Reactor Plan.
I will put a stop to it.
And you? What of your plans?
: We want to talk with Muzét.
: Why come find me?
: We heard you've been fighting her, so we figured you might know something.
Au Jole Soldier: Your Highness, we're ready to set sail.
: Good.
Come to the seahaven.
: How come?
: Come with me, and you may get your chance to see Muzét.
: We should join him.
: Okay.

The King of Rieze Maxia

: That is pretty impressive. But Leia, you need to watch your tone around him. You're way too casual!
: I was legitimately afraid for your life.
: Heh heh. Oops. I guess my excitement got the better of me.
: You think Gaius was pissed?
: Who knows? He never shows any emotion.
: A man in charge of two nations probably doesn't care about such trifles. Probably.
: Yeah, I thought so! It's no biggie.
: But try not to get carried away next time, okay?
: Indeed. Push a man like that too far, and you'll be dead before you see the sword leave his sheath.
: Yeah, next time, I'll keep a lid on it.

Skit Video: Tales of School - Part II

: I bet you want to go to school too, huh?
Don't worry! As soon as we find a nice safe place for you to live, you can start going.
: I don't want to go.
: Oh? May I ask why?
: Because if I bring Teepo to school, won't they get mad at me?
: You needn't worry about that. I'll ask them to let Teepo go too.
: I can go too?!
: Sure. Leia used to take dogs and cats to school with her!
: Wouldn't Leia have gone to a, uh, rural school?
: Does that make a difference?
: Then I do want to go!
: Why didn't you tell us sooner?!
: I hope we'll be able to send Elize to school soon.
: Indeed. And I'd like to see you continue your education as well.
Mark my words, Jude. One of these days, life will return to normal.
: Yeah, I guess it will.

Skit Video: (To the Talim Medical School)

: What's up?
: Coming back to Fennmont like this makes me miss my old medical school.
: Then why not drop by?
: You don't mind?
: Nah.
: You must've really loved it there if you miss it this much.
: I guess becoming a doctor really is your calling.

: Along their way they stopped by the medical school and ran into a guy Jude knew.

: Doctor Jude?! Hey, good news! You're in the clear now.
Between Gilland's betrayal and the Exodus situation, no one cares about your charges anymore.
When everything calms down, they may want you to come in and answer some questions, but it won't be a big deal.
: But there are still wanted posters everywhere.
: Yeah, I'm sorry about that. We haven't had time to take them down yet.
: Well, that's still great news! Right, Jude?
: Yeah.
: I've been meaning to ask you, doc... What happened to that tall guy who was with you before?
: ......
: You know, the one who knocked me down on the pier.
: You mean Alvin? He's... Well...
: Aha! I knew that had to be Alvin.
: You know him?
: Not personally, but my wife and I used to be close to the woman he lived with.
Her name was Mink.
: Mink?
: She's a real beauty. She wears glasses, and always carries a book around. You don't know her?
: Hmm, do you mean Presa?
Eldin.pn: Uh, maybe? I'm sure Mink wasn't her real name.
That's why I wanted to talk to Alvin, you see.
To make sure he knew her real identity.
: What do you mean?
: We received some intel that said she was actually a spy. One of the Rats.
: What's that?
: They're spies from one of the Auj Oule clans.
: Exactly. Mink made friends with a lot of Rashugal nobles and military officers and pumped them for secrets.
If you see Alvin, could you tell him that? I think he has a right to know.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm late for my appointment.
: What should we do?
: I dunno...
: If it's something Presa didn't want him to know, then I don't think we should tell him.
I mean, if even Alvin couldn't figure it out, she must have really wanted that secret kept.
: That's true. Well, if you feel that strongly about it, I guess we can keep her secret.
: I'm betting he knows.

: Anyway, it was time to set sail.
: His Highness is already aboard. We will depart soon.
: Excuse me.
: I presume you wish to ask about Jiao.
: Yes.
Do you know why he protected me during the battle?
: Perhaps he sought to make amends for his past crimes.
: But he ended up dying as a result.
: There are some who believe that nothing is more important than survival.
But priorities change. Life starts to lose purpose when you've gone astray.
Sometimes the only means to make amends for one's actions in life is to die.
: ......
: I don't really understand.
: Nor should you. You should focus instead on enjoying what you have.
: How do I do that?
: That's for you to find out. Jiao's greatest wish was for you to find happiness in life.
Of that I am certain.
: Okay, I'll find a way.
: That will put Jiao at peace.
: If I may.
: Full of questions today, aren't we?
Let me guess. Is it about His Highness?
: What are Gaius' plans for Rieze Maxia?
: No doubt His Highness will one day unite this world.
That should tell you what you want to know.
: Thank you for your time.
: What is it?
: It's nothing. Shall we move onward?

: That's why I want to meet the real Maxwell. To find out the truth.
: He'd most likely reside in the spirit realm.
: But, does such a place even exist?
: And even if it did, we have no means of getting there.
: Indeed, it's little more than a legend. But we know for a fact that spirits exist.
So it follows that they must reside somewhere. Likewise, a path to their realm must also exist.
: Hey, what about Nia Khera? Don't they call that place the village of the spirits?
: You have a point. It lies near a mountain known as the Hallowmont. Perhaps you might find a clue there.
: Well, what are we waiting for? Let's check it out!
: Don't get too excited. This ship isn't turning around before we reach the Lance of Kresnik.
: Really? Come on, who cares about that stupid Lance.
: Gaius, earlier you spoke of stopping the Otherworld Reactor Plan.
I suspect you're planning to invade Elympios using the Lance of Kresnik.
: It is for the good of Rieze Maxia.
: Hold on. You would need massive amounts of mana to use the Lance.
: I understand. I do not wish to sacrifice humans or spirits.
: Then, maybe we don't have to use it?
: The reality is, someone must.
: Oh come on! *THUD* *THUD*
: You, uh, know people like that, huh?
: Yeah.
: Are you trying to finish what Milla started?
: I never put it into that perspective, but inevitably yes, that is what I'm doing.
No one has ever made such a strong impression on me.
: Then we also need to consider the fate of Elympios!
: You're worried about them? At a time like this?
They were willing to sacrifice every human and spirit life in Rieze Maxia!
: Why does one side have to suffer for the sake of the other? That doesn't sit well with me.
: It wouldn't sit well with her, either.
: She would destroy the schism and save everyone. That's what I want to do.
: I'm surprised to hear such words from you.
: ......
: Are you trying to repay her for what she's done for you?
: Yes.
: You've grown strong.
Jude, join me and--
: Your Highness, we've nearly arrived. The salvage operation needs your attention.
: Very well.
: Gaius?

: Jude?
: Ah, yeah.
After this, I bet that they'll rebuild the Lance back at the laboratory.
:So then, you were listening to m--
: Uh!

: What's happening out there?!
Soldier: Incoming from the southeast! It's her!

: Muzét, stop this right now!
: They live? I should've known better than to trust that rogue. I'll deal with him later.
: But first!

: I hadn't had a good fight in forever.
So it's been a while since we've had a fight that was difficult but fair. Now is the time.

This is actually my second go at the fight, since I died to a thing you'll see later.

Muzet's primary attack is her long and crazy hair. Here she leans backwards for a bit and it tunnels through the ground to stab you from underneath. The "bursts" of hair follow the target around.

Oh, and she can also just teleport away from your frontliners.

Up in the background is Sunburst, which hits the ENTIRE FIELD a few times for fire damage. Sharpened Petals is dangerous because it hits in front and behind her.

Oh and she has an overlimit.

Elemental Hymn fires four homing projectiles, one for each of the four primary elements. It's also her Arcane Arte.

She won't use it just once, no.

Illusionary Charge lets her charge-attack. Sometimes she'll teleport to someone else right after using it.

Binding Sphere is annoying because it sticks around and has a decent AOE, so if I use Snap Pivot to get behind her, it'll put me right in its AOE.

Like that.

Sharpened Whip attacks a cone in front of her several times.

Diffusional Drive is an AOE water spell, I think Rowen gets it at some point. It fires water projectiles up from within its area.

Stun Blitz is a strong frontal attack that fortunately doesn't have that much range.

So here let's take a moment to talk about one of my least favorite mechanics in Xillia. So attacks that are too "weak" won't stagger, represented by that hexagon-shield thing. loving guess if it benefits enemies or us more. I'm attacking her from directly behind and I still have to hit her more than once to stagger her. Note from the position of her hands that she is NOT blocking.

At least I got through before too long. It only takes about four hits before she's back to being unstaggerable though. IIRC there's some stat pair that determines how hard it is to stagger foes, but it's never going to favor you so gently caress it.

Cyclone is another move she shares with Milla, although not one I used much.

Spire Throw does what you think it does.

Just with a little more dark energy than you were expecting.

Of course, the combination of Arcane Arte and Overlimit can mean only one thing.

She's going to do for us what she did for those ships.

Event Horizon, ladies and gentlemen. Area of Effect of "gently caress you" and damage to match. It's quite arguable that this is the most brutal enemy attack in Xillia (or Xillia 2).

Fortunately it USUALLY can't reduce you below 1HP. Unfortunately Muzet has a lot of ways to get those last few HP off. So yeah, that's what killed me the first time. Note that everyone was at >75% HP before that hit.

:fuckoff:

If you watch the video, you saw me order Elize to cast this on me a bunch.

For some reason, I'd been under the impression Demon Fist was light-elemental. It's not. This is.

The little floaty light ball is hard to hit with, but Muzet can feel it.

Force Mine drops four dark energy mines on the field. I think Rowen triggered the one closest to the camera.

Event Horizon had reduced everyone to 1HP, but the burn status on Jude and Leia insta-killed them.

Thankfully Jude revived, Elize rezzed Leia, and then for Rowen I had a life bottle (HP Surge makes all revives return you to 100% HP, there's a TP Surge as well we'll be using soon enough).

Gravity Well.

She's got Rowen's Roche Waltz as well.

Ugh, Binding Sphere. Leia and I died to it, then Elize tossed me a life bottle and I promptly died to it again.

In a nice bit of serendipity, I manage to finish the fight with Jude's Mystic Arte. Still haven't shown off our other four party members', gotta remember to do that.

Unfortunately it's no longer as easy to grab 3 levels off a single boss fight.

: Four on one sucked it turns out.

After you beat Muzet, a bunch of seriously brave soldiers grab her.
: Phew! It's a good thing we didn't try tackling her on our own.
Yeah, I'm sure Gaius would save your asses if you lost.
: Muzét, why are you doing this?
: Why? All I am doing is--
: All I am trying to do is protect Rieze Maxia! That's what!
: I mean…
How does what you're doing protect Rieze Maxia?
: How am I supposed to know?!
: So you are acting under order.
: Please, you have to tell us. Where is Maxwell? We need to know.

I'm also sure those guys are fine.
: What do you people want with Lord Maxwell?
: So, there is another Maxwell after all.
: Urgh!
: Muzét! This can't be what Maxwell really wants, can it?
: Of course it can!
Lord Maxwell, is this not your divine will?
: Lord Maxwell! Please! Command me to smite these humans!

: No answer.
: *Sob*
: What is happening to her?
: I do not know.

: Wingul, come, follow me!
: Yes, sir!

: Gaius, no!
: After His Highness!
Send word to the Chimeriad!

: Where are Gaius and Muzét?
: You sure this is the right place?

: What?
: Why?
: What's the big idea, featherneck?!
: Are you going to tell us why you're doing this?
: Because it's dangerous.
; What is? Us?
: No, Jude. You.
: Why would you say that?
: Having Jude meet Maxwell may impede on Gaius' progress. Is that what you believe?
: ......
: You think I would get in Gaius' way?
: Don't let them escape.
Soldier: Now, please come quietly.

: ......
: Ha!
: Huh?
Soldier: What?!

Yeah they're not going to bother pretending these guys can hold us.
: Teepo!
: Pucker up!
Mwah!
Soldier: Ugh.
: Hah!
: Wait, really?
: Now, let us find Gaius!
: But where'd he go?
: One place comes to mind.
: The Nia Khera Hallowmont!
: Yes. Precisely.
: Come on, guys.

: What? I'm not a mind reader!

Skit Video: The Hand of Gaius

: He really caught us off-guard.
: Why would he do that after he told me about Jiao?
: When Wingul makes a decision like this, he's thinking only of King Gaius.
: He would do anything, and stop at nothing, for the good of his king.
: Ugh. He must really look up to Gaius.
: I think it's more complicated than that.
: Gaius and Wingul aren't friends?
: They are friends. They share the same ideals, and they walk the same path.
: Which is what makes it so complex. They are close friends, and yet at the same time, fierce rivals.
: What does that mean? I don't get it!
: Leia, do you understand?
: Not really. I guess it's like the dude version of being a catty schoolgirl?
: Heh. That's... Well... That's surprisingly accurate, actually.

Skit Video: Erratic Muzet

: She was never a person. She's a different spirit!
: She's no different. This was her true nature all along.
: I don't know if that's the case.
: How come?
: She's just been following orders this whole time.
: I wonder what she's feeling inside? It could be completely different from her outward actions.
: She might simply be lost, like I used to be.
: ......
: Oh boy. Here we go again.
: Don't get me wrong. I can't forgive what she's done. It's just...
: I know, I know. Nice-guy Jude has to walk a mile in the enemy's shoes.
: Just remember what we're here to do.
: I know. She has to be stopped.
: We have to stop her.
