Is there more that people would consider essential listening for the genre? I honestly can't get enough.

Check out Arsis. They're one of the few bands I've heard who can pull off melodeath and techdeath at the same time.

A Celebration of Guilt is so, so good. Weirdly though, I've never been able to get into anything else they've done. Diamond for Disease is alright and there are maybe one or two other songs I dig, but that's it.

I can't think of a single other metal band that burned so bright for a debut and then faded out so fast.

WELL, as I mentioned, I've listened to that Gates of Ishtar album before, I used to like them, I don't anymore, I was refreshing my memory by listening to that album again because it's been 15 years, so I started skipping through every minute or so because I didn't want to listen to the whole thing again, when I remembered the reason I don't really like them anymore is that the songs are almost literally all identical, same riffs, same drums, rhythm, everything - what's funny is when doing so, I really couldn't tell any difference even when picking at random. Skipping through an album the very first time you've ever heard it and judging based on that is obviously not a valid review style, but to refresh your memory I think is acceptable. Thanks for listening.

Speaking of Abbath, him and Nergal did some sort of thing on Spotify - Metal Talks

I love Immortal and Abbath but I thought his self titled was actually really bland. I listened to it twice and found it completely unremarkable and unmemorable.

Goddamn, that sucks. They've got a gofundme set up for her looks like, think I'll toss a few bucks in.

edit: I wonder if the stairs at the Masquerade were involved. Still sucks either way.

Good for her (no idea which one since both the bass player and guitar player sang). I liked how unfazed they were when people were talking in the middle of the quiet parts of their songs but I guess they were used to that kind of stuff by that point in the tour, so they all seem like good people.

Yob shared it with the comment someone else ("a drunken idiot") was involved. Mosh accident maybe? I threw in too that's a lovely injury to deal with, much less on the road.

Bush singing on Worship Music would have been Anthrax's best album by a mile. Sound of White Noise and WCFYA were also great and decent respectably.

Belladonna is way too cheesy for me.

Saw the Taake tour last night in Pittsburgh. The entire venue was packed with Burzum patches and crust punks, with a whole lot of subtle (and abject) NSBM fan presence.

Taake was excellent live. Way better than expected.

Young and in the Way was also excellent, but their crust punk fans were the scourge of the show. Security kept grabbing them and throwing them out for fighting and being general assholes.

New Anthrax album is dropping tomorrow. The singles released sound dope, so I expect good things from the rest of the album.

Looking ahead, there's also Anvil, Diamond Head, Amon Amarth, Artillery, Metal Church, Discharge, Destruction, Death Angel, and Suicidal Angels. Some good poo poo coming out in the next few months.
