Cultures thrive on their myths and legends...and snuggles!
Pretty good, not up to FMA:B level (not much is) but the second season has the potential to be much better. My main criticism would be that it suffers from what I like to call Zhuge Liang and Lu Bu Syndrome where the tension gets shitted on a lot due to superhuman feats of logistical / tactical / diplomatic bullshit or fighting prowess respectively from a small handful of characters. When the story focuses on Arslan or the less bullshit members of his entourage it's extremely good.

E:

There's one particular moment of nonsensical bullshit plot invincibility which literally made me stand up and shout at my PC because it was so loving dumb and jarring, see if you can figure out where it was!

The anime has a fair drop in quality when they run out of manga to adapt and go straight from the books instead, though.

i picked up the first volume of monster at barnes and noble the other day and i read six or seven chapters and i was hooked and plan to continue it. the problem is that i realized later on its like 150+ chapters and it seems like a pretty drastic undertaking. i'm already worried about my visual media consumption habits as is and don't need to add to them.

i guess what i'm looking for is manga recommendations for similar things that aren't as lengthy. doesn't *need* to be psychological drama/horror. i'd prefer seinen i suppose but i don't really care about demographic distinctions. i don't know anything about the technical aspects of comics the way i do with movies/tv and can pretty much be sold on the goodwill of the storytelling alone

some other stuff i plan on reading but have put on the backburner: berserk, all other urasawa, all fukamoto

Well, there's always Erased, which also has an anime of the same name on Crunchyroll as well. It's a supernatural thriller about a dude trying to track down and stop the serial child murderer who killed a bunch of kids in his school when he was younger and was never caught. He has some Life Is Strange-esque time powers that he can't control and winds up getting catapulted back to when he was 10, and works towards both preventing the murders and catching the culprit. Things don't always go as planned, it's super loving good

Not being snarky here, but I don't understand why you would balk at Monster but still want to read "all other urasawa"? 20th century boys and Billy Bat aren't really any shorter, are they?

catalogs to look through where the artist puts out mainly shorter work: taiyo matsumoto, daisuke igarashi, naoki yamamoto, kyoko okazaki (people more informed than i can give more thorough josei recommendations), gekiga authors like tatsumi, yoshiharu tsuge, seiichi hayashi, etc.

individual series: domu, ressentiment, nijigahara holograph is like a volume long and would be the first asano series i'd start you off on, the world is mine is 163 chapters but i'll always find any opportunity to plug it

Space Dandy is a possibility if you're looking for a pure showcase of directorial flair and don't mind the central structure being an ultra-lightweight episodic comedy. Admittedly, there's tits all over, but at least they're adult tits.

Oh! Katanagatari is an adaptation of a book by the same author as the Monogatari series and it rules. It's not as tightly directed as the other -gatari and Rakugo but it's playful and engrossing.

It has the same precise and intimate style as a Shaft anime, just minus the intentional artificiality. You can tell that the director got his start at Shaft.

The effect is different, but I think if you appreciated those qualities in bakemonogatari you'll like Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu.

Madoka? Mekakucity Actors? Hidamari Sketch also has Shinbou direction but it's far more minimalist than Monogatari Series, so it's probably not what you're after.

Only watched the first episode - really did have nice action, but felt painfully cliched, like the most utterly generic people-with-powers thing. Not really bothered by the fanservice, just... didn't really catch my interest. Maybe I should give it another chance.
