I grew up in central Texas where there are not many Jewish people and was not aware of the acronym JAP (although I was aware of the concept of a Jewish-American princess from TV and comedy). On the other hand, my girlfriend who grew up in Brooklyn immediately realized what it was referring to. JAP is pretty much the New York region, LA and Montreal surprisingly. To people that grew up in those areas it's pretty loving normal, it's like WASPs are from Boston.

Rachel Bloom is doing a live Q&A on Facebook in an hour, if that's what you're into. If you have any urgent questions and don't use twitter, this is your chance. Also, the preview of todays episode looks quite good.

This is the best show. The second half of the season wasn't nearly as good as the first, but the would-be finale was as strong as anything they've done. The JAP battle was incredible and it's completely what I'm going to use to get my parents to watch this show.

Because I can already see the gears turning for Rebecca and Josh it's okay. Because that means we should focus on the more important and awesome and totally adorable White Josh x Daryl

I like Rebecca, but her complete disregard of money makes her somewhat unrelatable. Also pawning of that ring she wanted to have for her whole life seems odd. Of course she wont be able to just buy it back. My prediction: Josh finally decides to propose to Valencia, but in order to afford a ring he wants to sell something at that pawn shop. There he will see that ring and take it. Around that time Rebeccas mother visits again.

Air is lava! posted:Trent worked well for me. In any other show he would just be creepy. But here he is basically a parody of Rebecca herself. Showing up out of nowhere after the slightest hint of affection, being irritatibly nice to her, helping her with her job, showing up in her apartment and writing the letter. He is just one degree creepier than her. The reason CEG is amazing is because it's turned this trope on its head and made the show about how Rebecca (while understandable and empathetic) is displaying behaviour that is still REALLY inappropriate and comes from a mentally unhealthy place. The presence of Trent (in what was initially meant to be the finale) is kind of a perfect bookend because he behaves exactly the same way, but we're socially conditioned to see his behaviour as threatening. I'd kind of like to see later seasons focus on other characters too. I don't want Rebecca and Josh together, but Valencia's not very good with him either. I think it would be cool if Valencia became the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend next season and she has to undergo a change in her worldview, possibly thanks to friendship with Rebecca? I adore Rebecca and there's no way she'll be "cured" in one season, but I also don't want the show to go the route that Revenge did, which is spend an unbelievable number of seasons pursuing and repeatedly failing at only one thing. This show would become insufferable if it was 5 seasons of Rebecca loving Up with Josh/Greg/Her Romantic Involvement Du Jour.

Three would be ideal though -- and it's not unlikely that something like Netflix would love to pick this show up, given their closeness with the CW and the show's critical praise. But I'm not holding my breath.

It's part of Rebecca having undiagnosed/untreated mental health issues. Being irresponsible with money fits in pretty well with her character and the other problems/symptoms she's displayed. Also her pajamas were super cute and I want them.

The show is suffering now because these few episodes were commissioned after the rest. Now the season is really stilted because the big moment already happened but it has to keep chugging along for another five episodes. The remainder if this season is just gonna be a holding pattern until Josh and Rebecca get together in the finale.

The show is good but the episode wasn't really that good. I guarantee in the next few episodes nothing will happen and the season will end basically as it did in the courtroom. Valencia changed a little but just for long enough to keep Josh with her till the season ends.

Yeah it seemed to me like lots of plot happened - financial turmoil, the return of the garfunkel ring, Rebecca realising that she's been behaving unacceptably this whole time, overhearing that Josh doesn't love her. Though we probably will get back towards status quo by the end of the season - my prediction is that Rebecca will start to get to a better place/move on and then Josh will break up with Valencia and she will immediately abandon the progress she has made. (I think the ring thing is going to happen as well but I'm not sure how that will play out, maybe Josh will get the ring but decide not to give it, end up giving it back to Rebecca when he finds out it was hers - which she would presumably take as a big romantic thing but he's just being nice) Is this next episode going to be an all Rebecca plane/bottle thing do we think? I hope not, as I want to catch up with Greg and Josh. Also I hope Paula's husband comes back before the end of the season

It was good because the show's writing is good. The last five episodes were commissioned after the season was finished so they don't really fit with the original finale. Everything from last week's episode indicated they're going to just piss around for five episodes and have the finale end effectively the same way the original did. The whole thing has given the season an uneven feel imo. Within one season Rebecca and Josh have gotten close before being struck by disaster three times now, maybe even four. Normally 'will they won't theys' are far more spread out. Also Josh still acts like a 12 year old 99% of the time which makes her pursuit of him kind of weird and also uninteresting. e: no new episode this week

On a slightly deeper analysis level: I love how Rebecca is starting to shed all those levels of self denial. She aknowledges something which I kept saying. Josh is just a symbol for her happiness and shouldn't be her sole focus. As as doctor dream ghost Accopian said, he's an illusion. She never really loved that theater douche, but that terrible relationship made her rashly quit music, something she actually did love. And incidentally didn't do since summer camp, her other only thing she ever loved. And she almost made the same mistake with regards to her friends. The only reason it was alright to leave New York was that there wasn't really anything she liked. At some point Rachel Bloom said that Rebeccas character is basically how miserable her life would have turned out if she had never found a career in music. And that's really visible in this episode. The reason she came to West Covina in the first place and the reason she left is Josh, but he's not the reason for her return. In a weird circular way the title song is correct now. I am really interested how she answers that question, because both answers are in some way true, but are based on varying levels of self awareness. That scene between the parents was acted incredibly well and sort of killed me. Imagine if that adorable girl had heard that. And of course Naomi never told her. Either she would have believed her, in which case her heart would have broken, or she had dismissed it as a lie, which would only enforce her idea that her mother keeps them seperated because she hates love. I am incredibly glad that my parents were more civil when they broke up. All in all, I really loved this episode and it really shows that there is more in life than the "real love, like boy girl love, okay that's gender normative." I am still a bit perplexed by this show, since Rebeccas character is more interesting, multidimensional and in an indirect way relatable than any single character I've seen in a tv show before. I belive it's because they really thought it through. "In the first episode our main character makes this giant life changing decission but we still want her to be consistent and likeable. What sort of person would she have to be in order to do that? And what sort of history would develop her in that way?" That's my unqualified opinion.

I once dreamed of making a comedy show that would delve into becoming a deeper character study, but couldn't imagine how it would work and if it would actually be an enjoyable show that would remain funny while also getting into those more serious moments. This is that show realized. This is everything I could have hoped for and more. It's funny and engaging and I'm so happy that it's getting a second season.
