It's especially disappointing because season 8 was so strong.

Ehhh, two episodes were but there was a lot of weakness in there - Deep Breath was extended specially to give us even more poo poo comedy, the first half of the series has at best a few solid episodes (maybe with the exception of Listen if you really enjoyed it), but the second half of the series is poor except for those two excellent stories.

Remember that Moffat's in-universe tribute to Nicholas Courtney was to have his corpse shoot someone after being reanimated by the Master.

Seeds of Doom is pretty good, but would probably fit better into a 4th Doctor marathon

I really dug season 8, apart from the two pretty awful episodes of Doctor Who and the Space Spiders and In the Forest of the Night. Deep Breath had an awful opening half but apart from that and those two previously mentioned episodes, I thought the other episodes ranged from solid to absolutely amazing. I thought the season strung together better than 9 too in the way it explored Clara's reaction to the new Doctor and how that shifted from desperate hope to bitterness and anger to joyful acceptance, and how her growing closeness to him threw her own life/values so far out of whack. There's a lot going on with how she sees the Doctor, how he sees himself, how others see him (not just Danny but the Master too, obviously) and that it all lead to this moment makes it so worth it for me:

Mindwarp on the other hand... that one was so awful I've only watched it twice, and the second time was because my partner had never seen it. If it weren't for BRIAN BLESSED's scenery-chewing performance, I'd have probably let her watch it by herself.

Absolutely. Also, parts of Rose, a good amount of the Aliens of London two-parter, The Long Game, parts of Boom Town, and the majority of the ending two parter.

So, yeah. Series One owned, and is only eclipsed by Series Five.

And it seems like a quick restatement of the First Law of Doctor Who Fans is a necessary thing to have here, so. The First Law of Doctor Who fans says: "No substantive discussion group shall be entirely able to agree on the merits of any given story, not even the 'except X, that just plain sucked/rocked' corollary to this law." A great example of this is the four parts of The Trial of a Time Lord; we generally agree that one of them is a misunderstood classic, one is good harmless fun, and the other two are hideous smelly failures that we should never speak of again. What we can't agree on is the question of which story is which...

I wouldn't call Vervoids unwatchable. The Twin Dilemma is unwatchable. Underworld is unwatchable. (So is The Myth Makers, boom boom.) Pip & Jane scripts are ideal fodder for heckling while three sheets to the wind.

(The correct breakdown is that Mysterious Planet is a misunderstood if very minor classic and Mindwarp is entertaining cobblers, if you were wondering.)

I still enjoy season one a lot. A lot of it is probably nostalgia for being 13 and hearing Doctor Who was coming back and getting to watch it as it happened, and also a sort of vicarious nostalgia it evoked for the CBBC kid dramas I liked when I was younger (The Demon Headmaster having been my favourite).

Series 1 rules but it has aged pretty horribly in terms of its visual look, especially since the Moffat era where the show's look improved immensely. It's also very much a show still trying to find its feet (and tone) and the stumbles it has along the way are entirely understandable in a way that series 3 (and arguably 6 & 9) can't get away with.

Hmmm, 3, 6 & 9..... so series 12 will probably be a mess too, and that's gonna be Chibnall's second year which means it'll also maintain his Broadchurch track record of getting everything right in the first year and then loving things up in the second.

Final series aired in '98, so 7 years old. Reasonable enough, I remember TV series from when I was seven (eg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bucky_O%27Hare_and_the_Toad_Wars - well, 8 for that one)
