The best part is my first PC was a veteran of Akuze. Meaning Adrian Shepard had found out that his whole squad was killed by Cerberus experimenting on what happens when you expose Marines to Thresher Maws (it turns out they die). There is no option to be even nonplussed about this, just lots of 'Well they're awful but maybe only an unaccountable psychopathic private organization can do the things government is TOO AFRAID TO GET DONE!' gently caress Cerberus.
|
# ? Mar 31, 2016 20:07 |
|
My first playthrough was also as a sole survivor. I was under the impression that Cerberus' goals in 1 had to do with them trying to create a super soldier or a super weapon, which is why they set up the Akuze ambush and why they were experimenting on Toombs, and why they took such an interest in Shepard, and I suspected Miranda of setting up the station attack as a test of whether Shepard was ready or not. Then it turned out I put more thought into it than the developers did.

That's the funniest part about Cerberus. They're a constant parade of incredible stupidity. I actually thought for awhile that was intentional, that that was the clever twist. That while everyone was going 'Wow look how efficiently this incredibly, cartoonishly evil organization does things' the results were a constant 'Everyone dead, nothing of use discovered' as a kind of refutation of their bullshit. Actually Mac Walters is just a really bad writer, instead.

Crap, a pop up We head off to Ilos in order to stop Saren from reaching the Conduit. But first we get busy with a certain Asari scientist (sorry, guys, not Rana). Hilariously this means if you want to create a manual save before heading off so you can redo the final mission with different squadmates you'll have to sit through banging whomever each time Then we're treated to some choice overacting and get the world's longest info dump from a broken Siri equivalent. Seriously, it's like 20 minutes long. Needless to say when I'm not LPing the game I sit and mash square through it and don't bother asking extra questions. Apparently the Reapers have been doing this for millions of years and the only reason we're all not already dead is because the last few Protheans reprogrammed the ugly grasshoppers wandering around the Citadel and so Sovereign is down to plan Z which involves a grumpy Turian and religious robots. Also it seems the Rachni wars were one of Sov's earlier attempts. Just like in real life, the important people hosed off at the end of the last cycle and left an idiot in charge. For once we can be happy with management making poor personnel choices. Saren's already made it through so we'll have to hurry to catch him! Last episode will be up within the week and then I'll take a short break before picking up ME2.

Sovereign citizen beatdown After spending valuable time screwing around with a dying computer we finally head off through the Conduit. Saren's already there and things have really gone to poo poo. Fires, death, and malfunctioning elevators. Sovereign tore through the Council's fleet like cheap toilet paper and if we can't stop it, the Reapers are gonna pour in and destroy all life as we know it. This is probably everyone's favorite setpiece in the game, and with good reason. That view when you first step out into empty air and things are all topsy-turvy is excellent. You have what appears to be a horizontal field when in actuality you're running vertically up the outside of the Presidium. Every now and then a piece of debris or an enemy will go hurtling by to remind you of this. Then you've got Sov off in the distance with his big tentacles smashing down and the Citadel's closed arms as a backdrop. It's some first class poo poo and those of us who love this game can forgive crappy inventory interfaces, myriad elevators and sketchy combat because they get us to this point. We talk Saren into blowing his brains out and then fight his reanimated skeleton. That's more than a few implants there, guy. I guess Sov decided to offload all its processing power into the thing because once you kill what's left of Saren it BSODs and gets obliterated by the Alliance ships. We let the Council live because we're We choose Anderson to be king hell poo poo of yoomanity because gently caress Udina for grounding us. Why yes, I hold grudges why do you ask? You can actually undo this decision later due to an oversight which I'll explain in the next thread. And then purposefully march off to get on yet another goddamn elevator. Also the ending shot is delightfully cheesy. And that's the LP folks! Gonna take a bit of a break, maybe a week or two before I pick up again. The next LP will have an added feature which I'm excited to try out and y'all can play along at home.

I like to imagine Shepard listening to the music during the fight up the citadel and singing along. The citadel space battle is really cool with Sovereign just through the defense fleet not giving a gently caress and Admiral Hackett being all "Negative! This is our only chance!". Shooting Geth, Saren and Saren/Sovereign interspersed with cutscenes of the fleet action really helps to make it feel epic and to give it a sense of urgency. If my memory is correct Wrex puts two bullets through Saren's head when making sure he's dead, everyone else just shoots once.

This has been an excellent LP, as usual, SubponticatePoster. These last two videos showed off the best part of the game. I love gigantic infodumps, so I really liked the Vigil sequence. The revelations about the Citadel and the Conduit really surprised my in my first playthrough. That the small Mass Relay statue in the Citadel is an actual Mass Relay is good storytelling, it's amazing when you travel through the Conduit and emerge at it, it's a very nice moment. The whole battle of the Citadel, both the fleet action around Sovereign, and Shepards battles with the Geth and Saren are pretty amazing as well. All in all, despite being a pretty unpolished game, the ending makes up for it. It's a "nice" contrast to ME 3.

That final mission in ME1 is one of the reasons I will always like ME1 the best despite its janky gameplay. ME1 felt more like the kind of awesome space opera I was looking for before they went all Grim and Gritty and 'Hey man maybe the Space KKK has good points have you considered that'

Thank you for this LP Subponticate Poster! I have enjoyed it immensely. Another thing though, I really don't get everyone being so uncomfortable with Liara's age. She says that she is barely an adult by her species standards. I interpret that as her age corresponding to 18/19 human years. Shepard is 30 at the most by my estimate, probably somewhat younger. Is that really such a huge age difference?
