Big Boss shows Ocelot up in Russia in 1964, and he's been all "Senpai please notice me" ever since.

Ocelot being in love with Big Boss isn't subtext. It's Text. Ocelot explicitly says it in TPP.

I might play the game one day, but I don't really feel compelled to anymore. Plot woes aside, MGS5 is the best game in the series. Hell, I'd even rate the cutscenes as some of the best in the series, it's just that there's so few of them. Most of the really stupid plot points are relegated to tapes you can listen to while you do other stuff.

MGS5 is fantastic. It has some issues(like all Metal Gear games) but the main problem is it's unfinished. The whole resolution to Eli and Mantis' story was cut.

Zereth posted:That was confirmed as being Mantis then? (I never got around to finishing but I kinda don't care about doing so anymore) The remains of Mission 52, the intended conclusion, doesn't really confirm it, but it makes more sense than anything else. He saved Eli from both a napalm strike and death by parasite, leaving them alone on an island together. He was also the only reason Sahelanthropus was moving at all; the thing wasn't mechanically capable of supporting its own weight, so that was all telekinesis, one of Mantis' powers otherwise unexhibited by the child. It's still technically possible that kid wasn't Psycho Mantis, but it would be a bigger reach if it wasn't him than if it was.

The game never explicitly says "Yo, Tretij is Psycho Mantis" but he is. His theme song is called "Angering Mantis" on the soundtrack, Kojima called him Man-Chan when revealing his Play Arts Kai figure on Twitter, and one of the tapes in the game from Ocelot mentions the use of the gas mask to shield his mind from outside influence. If the kid isn't Psycho Mantis, I don't know what the hell he could be.

Pretty certain it's just Ocelot at that point. You've already beaten the hypnosis out of him in the first two stages of that fight (Liquid and Liquid Ocelot.)

I love how Big Boss continues to always be the best at everything. They explain Mantis' powers get activated and controlled by anger and hate, and in one of the logs they say that power was dormant until BB wakes up from his coma and his anger was so powerful that it awoke Mantis' powers from miles away.

MGS2 is the best MGS. Granted, I've only experienced Metal Gear through Chip Cheezum LPs, so that might skew me a bit, but what a wild ride. LPs are a very different experience because it already feels like watching a TV show so there's no difference between gameplay and cutscene. Probably why I enjoyed MGS4 so much...listening to Chip and Ironicus take the piss out of 90 minute cutscenes was very entertaining, probably far more so than to actually play that game.

MGS 3 is the best - the way all the different elements come together in the game: the story, the mechanics, the level design, the endless little touches and easter eggs. It's still an incredible game. MGS V is better from a techinal view, but the way MGS 3 tells its story through the world it creates - incredible game design.

MGS3 certainly has the most restrained and IMO strongest writing. I'm saying this about a game with a man who turns bees into machine guns and a Russian who is a lightning wizard.

It's got what feels like more gameplay than 1 and 2 did (definitely more than 4, which literally has more cutscenes than gameplay) and some unique features to the series like the eating. It's also got the most rockin' theme song of the whole series.

Probably during the Eva infodump after the already fairly uninteresting city section. You definitely get a save in the middle somewhere, and I seem to recall you get another towards the end before the lead-in to the bike chase starts.

Act 3 is where I gave up playing MGS4 myself, to be honest. After the not so interesting sneaking and an hour long cutscene that I had to save in the middle of, any momentum I had for the game was killed. Which apparently was the wrong thing to do because having watched Chip's LP I quit pretty might right before the game gets really good.

Actually, it's a lot of not-great things. Some good things, most definitely. But a lot of the not-good things in the game are here.

On an unrelated note: I'm somewhat baffled Konami still hasn't ever released 4 on anything but PS, considering how much of the rest of the series they ported over or designed for from the start.

That would take forever.

Yeah, honestly it's reasons like that that MGS4 never hit any other consoles. There's a lot of really minor bits to the whole experience that being on a PS3 is crucial to; that line, Mantis' bits about the hardware, Mk. III being controlled by a Dualshock. The flashback to MGS1 just before Act 4 requires a working PS1 emulator, too. Replacing or removing any of that would require more effort than most companies that actually wanted to do that would go through, and this is Konami we're talking about.
