This year Oculus launched its first consumer edition VR headset, Oculus' Rift. History In 2012 Palmer Luckey founded Oculus VR, with the intent to create a better head-mounted display (HMD) that could be inexpensive and effective for gamers. The very same year Oculus launched a kickstarter, sending developer kits (DK1) to people who backed $300 or more. This kickstarter was incredibly sucessful and led to very succesful funding rounds, and the eventual acquisition by Facebook for $2 billion. This would pave the way for a launch of a second developer unit (DK2) and a succesful partnership with samsung to launch Gear VR, a mobile VR platform. Oculus Announced in January of 2016 that the Oculus rift would cost $599 and would begin shipping March 28th. Rift The Oculus rift costs $599 and comes with the following: -The Rift HMD -A tracking camera -An Xbox One Controller and Wireless Adapter -An Oculus Remote Now to break down the rift a bit further: -OLED Screen at 2160 x 1200 @ 90 Hz. This display is split between two eyes, so half of the resolution horizontally is what each eye receives. -Integrated Headphones -Built-in Mic -Ergonomic build designed to be lightweight and comfortable. -110 degree FOV -Adjustable IPD The rift is covered in IR emitting sensors. These sensors are tracked by the camera in conjunction with the on board accelerometers and magnometers to provide not only rotation tracking for the unit but positional tracking. This leads to a fully immersive experience. You're not seeing through a monitor, but instead you exist in the world and can move as if you are a part of the world. The Content Currently you can buy Oculus content on both Steam and Oculus stores. While Steam content could be a mixed bag of experiences, the Oculus store is going to be curated to ensure only high quality VR content can be added. This will ensure a good experience for all users. Currently only the Rift is supported on the Oculus Home, it is unclear if Oculus will begin supporting other VR headsets. The Oculus store can be browsed on a traditional monitor or it can be browsed in VR, where you will be placed into a small cozy home enviornment with your titles floating in front of you as well as the Oculus Friends List. While the store is limited there are a handful of quality titles already available. Oculus has taken the time to fund games that otherwise wouldn't exist to help promote VR grow as a technology. These Oculus exclusive titles will slowly begin to trickle into the store to provide even more quality experiences in addition to what is already offered. The Future Currently Oculus is targeting a seated experience using Game Controllers. However this is going to change when Oculus Touch is released sometime in the second half of 2016. Oculus touch will bring motion controls to the Oculus SDK, allowing users to not just see their virtual worlds, but interact with them in a natural and impactful way. On top of the controls touch will launch with a second camera to allow users a higher level of tracking fidelity for a seated experience, or to place across their room for a true room-scale experience. The cost of this unit is currently not known, but those who pre-ordered the rift do get a discount. Requirements Here are the requirements if you are thinking of getting a rift: NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD 290 equivalent or greater Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater 8GB+ RAM Windows 7 SP1 or newer HDMI 1.3 video output supporting a 297MHz clock via a direct output architecture A USB 3.0 port for the rift A USB 3.0 port for the tracking camera A USB 2.0 port for the Xbox wireless adapter (Optional)A USB 3.0 port for the second tracking camera when touch launches

I sure am glad the stepping on point for this thing in Australia is over a thousand dollars for the unit itself, then you can go buy a computer fast enough to make it not give you latency related motion sickness. I'm sure a buggy as gently caress archery range is a killer app that will make me drop that sort of money for the same experience as 2 counterfeit bottles of vodka.

Vakal posted:Would it be worth buying over a HD projector for watching movies on a (simulated) big screen? do you have other live humans/cats that come to watch things? You might be able to fit a cat into the goggles with you but otherwise it will be a pretty boring and awkward experience as your friends watch you watch virtual movies/porn.
