I can't speak for the rest but Grumpy cat has pretty strict rules that must be adhere to for anyone that wants to use him, the owners don't allow him to be paraded around all the time or overworked.

We stood in line for an hour and a half and when we got there she was still doing fine, and when we walked out she was playing with a little feather-string toy. They would only let a few people in to see her at a time so she wouldn't get overwhelmed and no one but her owner could pick her up. Grumpy cat, however, is constantly shown on Instagram looking miserable (beyond her facial expression) and being tortured by Disney employees dressed up like giant dwarfs and other horrifying (to a cat) characters. I am not particularly fond of her treatment, and many people have made their feelings known to her owner, who seems to have taken much of our complaints to heart, as she does appear to be doing fewer shows and appearances now. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Bub has been on shows like Ellen or Oprah or other venues where people shriek and scream and applaud and generally do things that would freak out a cat, and I'm pretty sure GC has. I just hope she gets some peace soon. She's a cute cat and all, but she deserves better. E: yes, I stood in line for 90 minutes to meet an Internet cat. I'm not ashamed, and I don't apologize for it.

Many vets donate their time and he also uses much of her proceeds to her vet care, so that is covered, and his band/music production company gets a lot of publicity thanks to Bub, so he doesn't need it for himself. I'm sure travel expenses are covered by the appearances' sponsors. He also seems to live fairly simply. I'm not sure what percentage goes to charity, but it's above average, I'd say. The Dude is a Good Guy.
