I think it was SMG who said it but it resonated with me, Godzilla 2014 was a great pagan volcano God movie. The humans in it just keep tossing sacrifices into the volcano hoping it will work and that maybe their God will notice them.

Rewatched Godzilla 2014 last night.

I have trouble caring about the complaint of the main protagonist being boring. He's not the most interesting person ever, but he explicitly doesn't need to be because this movie cares about the personal milieu insofar as how giant monsters invade it, and how they serve as an extension of the people themselves. The point isn't to have everyone be super zany, super interesting, or super deep because the reality is most people simply aren't those things. Now of course this is a movie so we have to dress human lives up for the drama a bit, but a lot of the movie's point is to dwarf human lives compared to the awe and spectacular of ancient monsters and newer monsters engaging in combat. Their battle is a spiritual battle, and the reason parts of the characters feel incomplete or bland is because the monsters are supposed to be considered as part of that whole; remove the monsters from the picture and you have normal people going about their normal, uninteresting lives rather than people who'd be acting wacky or strange regardless.

Didn't ask me, but the bit where the MUTO is bearing down on the protagonist in that really awesomely framed widescreen shot near the end. And of course the bit with the stomping foot on tha airport tarmac. I have a lot of complaints about that movie but Seamus McGarvey crafts some incredibly striking images. Do we know if he's returning for the sequel?

Not prepared to provide multiple screenshots with detailed analysis but I really appreciate some of the earliest shots in the Philippines, namely the opening one of the torn open pits. It grabs you right after the opening credits (which the slurry of confidential information and swelling music do great justice to). Other than that I like the way the movie flows, and I appreciate the limited view of the monsters because after a few rewatches you appreciate the scope of detail in their actions, blocking, etc. when they do appear. One moment I'm particularly found of is the casino in Vegas; first there's the news shot nobody's paying attention to, then everyone's pissed off and annoyed the lights out, then finally terror when the building gets torn open. I seem to recall a few instances of that three part shot composition.

Sure, but most Godzilla movies aren't as long nor do they focus so much on a single human protagonist. We follow Ford's movements more than we do either of the monsters, especially Godzilla, so it's all the more noticeable that he's kind of bland and cipher-ish. The movie had plenty to recommend it, but I think the MUTOs and Joe Brody had way more characterization and were far more of a driving force of the plot than Godzilla or Ford Brody, and for me it was too imbalanced. Particularly for Godzilla, who seems almost forgotten when he's not onscreen for much of the movie. Ford, on the other hand, seems to be the camera for the movie, where he's the PoV we see most of the movie from but he gets very little characterization or plot drive. Which, as you said, might be partially intentional, but if there's nothing to latch onto then there's no reason to identify with him beyond the fact that he's a human and not a monster.

You should watch the Korean film, "The Host". The humans are more interesting than the monster, and that's barely a knock against the film itself. It has some over the top moments in it, but it has characters you can identify with.

Like BvS, King Kong and Godzilla are manipulated into fighting by, I dunno, the Xians or Kilaaks or the Aliens from the Third Planet of the Black Hole, then they unite at the end to face off against Gigan with the assistance of Mothra, and we see news footage of Rodan and Varan and Baragon in brief scenes setting up Destroy All Monsters.

The film starts with a scene where Jet Jaguar gets shot in the face and killed but he's not identified by name.

Baragon comes back in time to give a message to King Kong but he misinterprets it.

This is basically the plot of Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster. Which Gareth Edwards might actually already be remaking since the next American film is supposed to feature Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah.

Yeah, Godzilla vs. Megalon barely resembles a movie at times- it's more like a really cheap sentai episode with a cast of like 5 people (and no women!) - but it has a certain fascination in that regard.

The one kaiju movie I really loathe is Rebirth of Mothra II.

Godzilla vs. Megalon was the first Godzilla movie I ever bought when I was a kid - it was on clearance at a dollar store and had this really cheap cartoony bootleg-looking cover.

The first and third are okay, the second is hideous. There's this weird orange and green color scheme (though the Toho Kingdom review says it's partly a problem with the BR transfer, I don't recall it looking any better on video), most of the running time is given over to really cheap and uninteresting Indiana Jones stuff, there's an orange fluffy furby thing whose urine has magic healing powers, it's very unpleasant.
