This time for 62.8 million. The town of McKinney, Texas voted in favor of a bond Saturday that will allow the school district to build a $62.8 million, 12,000-seat high school football stadium. According to USA Today, that price tag would make it the most expensive high school football stadium in the country. Saturday's vote allowed the town to devote $50.3 million toward the stadium out of a new $220 million bond. The other $12.5 million for the football stadium project will come from a bond approved by the town in 2000. Although McKinney's new field might be the most expensive, it is far from the only mega-priced project in the area. The stadium will be built approximately four miles north of a $60 million football stadium which seats 18,000 in Allen, Texas. The town of Katy, Texas is currently building at $62.5 million stadium set to open in 2017. http://www.foxsports.com/nfl/story/mckinney-texas-high-school-football-new-stadium-bond-050916 Last time they did this, the thing was deemed unsafe after spending 60 million. The stadium in allen texas started cracking and developed significant structural deficiencies Good use of funds in my opinion. I wonder if this one will be structurally sound.

whoflungpoop posted:town proposes building for popular activity requiring fitness socialization and hard work, here's a misanthropic group of tubby computer janitors with the hot take As a resident with kids in the school system it's surreal and creepy to see this mentioned in GBS, but any excuse to hate anything about Texas is valid here. You may also member McKinney as the site of the bikini teen beatdown party the police held last summer. For perspective, the current stadium is 54 years old. MISD bundled the new stadium and "event center" in with a lot of other improvements that the school system actually does need, and managed to knock down the tax rate by 4.5 cents--which saves $100-150 per year on a typical house here, whoopity doo--so there was no way the bond proposal wasn't going to pass even though a lot of us knew we didn't need such an ostentatious, wasteful thing. Even so it was only 62% in favor. A majority would certainly not have supported the stadium project on its own, and of course they knew that. City governments around here seem to be especially bad at blowing money on vanity projects like sports facilities and courthouses and finding weaselly ways to get them passed regardless of public opinion.

this may seem like an extravagant waste for something as silly as high school sports, but you have to look at it as an investment in our youth. not every child can be a doctor or a scientist, especially in texas where the only science we teach is how God took a bone from adam and made a lady out of it. for some kids, the only path to success is through sports. thanks to this facility and others like it, dozens, maybe hundreds of kids will have what it takes to achieve fame and fortune, beat their fiances up pretty good, and kill themselves at the ripe old age of 45.
