I just noticed the German unit sprites in 1936 are holding Lee-Enfield rifles.

*sperg*

Edit: oh poo poo wait no they aren't, they're just the default rifle for nations that don't have their own sprites. Neato. Makes sense, too.

Yeah that will hopefully be rectified in the future. Hopefully without being in a DLC, as they would be nowhere near as extensive in as a CK2 portrait pack or something.

The in-game music is absolutely fantastic (<3 Andreas Waldetoft) but I've already muted it and replaced it with Radiooooo.com and their 1930/1940 music for the various WW2 countries. Tons of big band and native-language stuff that fits in very well with the game.

So I've been poking around the game files to see how they work and maybe make a Crete mod or something. But then I noticed that even though the game only seems to really care about the three major ideologies, there are actually a lot of sub-ideologies defined in the game!

Fun fact: There are no less than five types of Communism in the game. :ussr:

Marxism posted:

Encompassing a broad spectrum of economic and historical views, Marxist politics seek to apply the theories of Karl Marx to political practice. Class struggle and the need for transition to a society based on common ownership of the means of production characterize these ideologies.

Leninism posted:

A political ideology based in Marxist thought, Leninism seeks to establish a socialist state by a vanguard party leading a revolution overthrowing capitalist society. Once in power, the party rules through a system whereby policies are open for internal debate until a decision has been made.

Stalinism posted:

Identifying as a form of government applying and developing Marxist-Leninist policies, Stalinism emphasizes rapid industrialization and collectivization as well as the need for a strong, authorative socialist state to purge any counter-revolutionary elements.

Anti-Revisionism posted:

A reaction to the many ideologies claiming to be successors to Marxism, Anti-Revisionism advocates retaining key elements of original revolutionary theory. Mainly opposing incorporation of capitalist economic elements into socialist states, the ideology is defined as much by what it isn't as what it is.

Anarchist Communism posted:

An ideology embracing the idea of communism as a stateless society, Anarchist Communism eschews the idea of a transitionary socialist state and favors a society based on voluntary associations and mutual aid.

You can find the data in common\ideologies\ and localisation\parties_l_english/yml

The ideology sub-types are:

Democratic
-Conservatism
-Liberalism
-Socialism

Communism
-Marxism
-Leninism
-Stalinism

-Anarchist Communism

Fascism
-Nazism
-Fascism

I'm Stalin. It's early '42. My "gently caress you Hitler" foreign policy lead to Hitler grabbing all of Poland, but I have all the Baltics, Bessarabia (I swooped in when Romania had forgotten to join the Axis) and Finland.

I have a fairly long frontier with the Grey Menace now, and I have nearly 150 divisions staring down at it and I'm trying to figure out the best way to organize my lines. Should I split my forces into corps of 24 divisions each, and manually assign a piece of the frontier to each? Put all my armoured and motorized divisions into their own corps with Konev and Zhukov and all those other cool dudes in charge, and draw a massive encirclement using them? Or should I throw it all under one field marshal and form a single battle plan and front?

I just played a game with the worst Axis ever. Japan lost to China, Italy got it's rear end kicked in Africa by the UK and France, and Germany not only failed to conquer France, they couldn't even beat POLAND. It's 1941 and Germany already surrendered.

Does AI Germany seem weak as crap to anyone else? In my first game as USA they got stalemated by the allies in 1940 and slowly lost before I could even get involved in Europe, also Japan didn't engage in a pacific war against me :( . Then in my second game as a observer Germany beat France but never warred Russia, instead they just sat around doing nothing until the allies stormed them and killed every last axis country in Europe.

The game seems good so far though. Way above 3.

I've noticed that Romania gets its lunch money taken from it frequently. They've lost northern Transylvania to Hungary and that slice of land they have south of the Danube to Bulgaria.

Then either the Soviets eat them alive or turn them into Commie Romania.

So I found a bit of a bug.

I'm playing on historical difficulty and loving around with console commands to re-make Austria-Hungary. I annexed HUN and CZE and joined the Axis after. First off, Germany always DOW'd me after I refused Anschluss, even when I was in their alliance already. I white peace'd out of it with a console command and re-joined the Axis. Now Germany is FREAKING THE gently caress OUT that they can't pick their Sudetenland focus (since I guess that is scripted) and won't do any other focuses. Like, it'll pick Sudetenland and then cancel it one in-game hour later, rinse/repeat.

Found a bug, don't give everyone military access then remain as a co-belligerent. I DoW on Greece and then Germany went loving insane and DoW every single nation in Europe. Greece shifted into the Allies which made me also at war with them. The second Germany cleared Poland they decided the best course of action was just to keep the front open and DoW on USSR. So I'm not in the Axis yet fighting on the same side because gently caress opening up the USSR as a front as Turkey.

Yes, that is infact Japanese troops fighting Republican Spain troops in Istanbul. The USSR is fighting in Holland and Luxemburg as well as in the Balkans. Republican Spain owns a huge slice of the Eastern Front. This map is :barf:

Two questions: If I edit a division template (I've been giving my basic infantry divisions some artillery and anti-tank support), all my existing divisions will upgrade themselves as equipment and manpower becomes available, right?

Similarly, if I remove some divisions from a brigade, can I recover their equipment and manpower or does it melt away into the ether?

EDIT: Also, what kinds of things should I expect Republican Spain to do since it actually won the civil war? Most of the streams I've seen had it get destroyed and then seen the Nationalists cause all sorts of problems along the French border. Can I send the troops I had on the Spanish border to the Italian border? It's early 1939 and I'm a democratic Allied France.

(It's irrelevant to my game, since this didn't happen, but what should France do if they choose "Go With Britain" and Britain refuses them? That event made me a bit nervous since if I couldn't get in the Allies my entire game would have fallen apart.)

You lose out on the planning bonus (can be 50% or more if you wait long enough and have certain techs). You can give manual orders to supplement the offensive plan, though, and your manually initiated attacks will get the same planning bonuses.

If you don't micromanage your attack you might also accidentally bypass enemy divisions which cut you off

To go quickly is foolish. To go slowly is prudent. Not to go; that is wisdom.
Speaking of which, where can I see the preparation level of a front? Also, do I lose it if I at some point take manual control of a division (say, go for an encirclement)?
