As a very budget-conscious gamer currently on a FX-8350 and an HD 7850, is it worthwhile to get something like an R9 380 or R9 380X for <$150 to stave off the upgrade bug for another 2-3 years until a full system rebuild, or is it smarter to just bite the bullet and drop $100 more for a current-gen card? Pretty much the most demanding game I currently play is Shadow of Mordor at 1080p but I plan on buying Overwatch very soon also. I greatly prefer buying new vs used. e: also my card now is at stock, I haven't tried using the AMD software overclock yet Gray Matter fucked around with this message at 06:27 on Jul 16, 2016 |

So I got a 1070 (first time buying a $200+ card in my life) and all my games run wonderfully. Now, I have to ask, besides GTA5 and Doom what will really show this off? The new Tomb Raider is too expensive for me to spring for at the moment.

The upcoming AMD RX470 promises to be the killer value card you're looking for. 4GB 380 was adequate for FullHD earlier this year, but I'm afraid looking at Tomb Raider etc the writing is on the wall. Anything below 970/390 class performance will simply no longer cut it, not for 2-3 years. I wouldn't pay more than a hundred for one of those. sauer kraut fucked around with this message at 07:09 on Jul 16, 2016 |

RX460 is supposed to be at ~380 performance according to AMD (they were claiming 1080p30-60 performance). Either way you're going to need a really hot deal to justify a 380X. Which is kind of baffling when 2304 GCN4 SP = 2816 GCN2 SP, so how does 1024 GCN4 SP = 1792 GCN3 SP? Diminishing returns or just P11 being a smaller die and thus fewer foundry issues? Bandwidth limitations in one and not the other?

I just bought into triple 4K monitors. Obviously, there's nothing on the market that can push that at full tilt in the latest games, but I'd like to get as close as possible for under $1k. They support Freesync, but am I right in thinking that AMD can't touch nVidia for $:performance with the 1080?

Of those you'll eventually HAVE to get the new Tomb Raider though. At this rate in a mere 55 years these two cards will be the only ones on the market! Just like any hobby with a high end, it's hard to get out of the echo chamber of constant upgraders and people riding the new hype. The 970 was the value king and its stellar performance appealed to a wider range than most; furthermore it was on the market for a real long time, so it was able to snap up a bunch of people who hadn't upgraded in a while from a few seasonal cycles. Call me if the 1070's absolute market percentage hits 2% by Halloween, until then I'll be rolling my eyes on the altar of dead maymays with the dagger in my hand. In other news, I'm hoping the RX 480X2 is real. I want to send Raja a fiddle to play while mobos burn.

The AIB cards seem to have better overall performance since they maintain their highest boost clock basically at all times. Also AIB cards run considerably cooler. Would say only get a FE/Blower card if you need the heat leaving out the I/O plate.

If you want maximum speed for 4K right now then you need to go Nvidia. It also kind of depends on what games you plan on playing since a 480 might well be able to run older ones at 4K and alright settings, but I don't think it can run new and intensive games anywhere near 60fps at 4K/high. Vega isn't until 2017, yesterday at a event in Korea where they unveiled the RX 460 and 470, it was reiterated that it's a 2017 product, which matches the roadmaps. There was some hope it was getting pushed up, but that dream looks to be dead. As are the wallets of anyone wanting high end graphics cards.

Mega Comrade posted:Isn't vega going to be aimed at 1080 rumoured to be as soon as October now? The rumored 4096SPs would put it roughly around the 1080, based on 480CF performance. If the power consumption scales fairly linearly and it utilizes 8GB HBM2, looking at a TDP of 180-190W is my best guess. Estimated early 2017 (March-May), backed by Hynixs recent HBM2 ramp. There is also a Vega 11 with an undetermined placement that's recently appeared in OpenCL, which is it's own can of worms on how you'd interpret the coming AMD line up for the 400 series or 500 series. Prevailing theories are; Vega 10 Pro will be RX490, Vega 11 Pro will be RX Fury and XT versions of both will get eaten up for HPC and exascale computing ventures; alternatively, Vega 10 and Vega 11 are 500 series cards with a Polaris refresh in 2017, with current Polaris serving only as an interim solution for a competing product to Pascal. RX490 and RX Fury would then be a dual chip CF monstrosity or MCM-Active Interposer engineering feat. wargames posted:No stop, if you say anything remotely positive about amd it summon a rabid FaustQ. It definitely gets my vote, it's a fantastic game in nearly every aspect from graphics to gameplay to writing to voice acting, and contains easily 100+ hours of gameplay (plus two expansions) Doom is also pretty great technology-wise and can really make use of the card, but gives you 10 hours of shooting and that's it.
