Basically everything but the very first game is part of the same continuity (insofar as that poo poo honestly matters for a series like this), right?

The spinoffs are in their own continuity, but Rebirth 2/3/V-II are the same continuity, yes. I THINK Rebirth 1 and U share a continuity since the world map design of Gameindustri is the same between games and U mentions the Console Wars which Rebirth 1 covered but every other game is in a completely different universe that doesn't relate to the others at all.

Basically, Re;Birth 1 was the only way to make Neptunia 1 playable, and Neptunia mk2 was the first step is distancing the main series from the original.

Nep 1 *is* referenced in the rest of the mainline games, as they do mention Superdimension Arfoire's existence in passing, and the opening cutscene of Victory/Re;Birth 3 is the very first battle of Neptunia 1 where everyone gangs up on Purple Heart and destroys her.

In mk2, Arfoire was previously defeated, which caused the CFW team to show up and try to revive her. Re;Birth 1's True End has the cast turning Superdimension Arfoire into a good guy, meaning she's not the same one that was defeated in mk2's history. Without Nep1/Re;Birth 1, you wouldn't know who Arfoire is or why The Deity of Sin is a big deal, aside from them saying she is. The Arfoire from Victory/Re;Birth 3 is a totally different (and far less competent) Arfoire, and V2's Arfoire is built on the memory of a previous Arfoire, most likely Ultradimension Arfoire.

Basically, the only legit Arfoire that gets fleshed out is the first one, and since she is THE central connecting factor of the entire franchise, it's worth playing Re;Birth 1 to understand her.

That reminds me, the resolution of the true ending in the very first game on PS3 and the true ending in Rebirth 1 are pretty wildly different. The original game more or less required that Mk2 was a reboot of sorts while Rebirth 1's true ending pretty easily opens up the possibility of future games set in the Superdimension.

Rebirth 1 has to be the loosest remake I know of, since only a small number of plot threads carry over to the remake and even then the characters react completely different to those that are the same between games.

So you'd say it's not really worth looking at Feinne's Nep1 LP for a story overview (except in the broadest possible strokes I guess), right

I'm looking at the mk2 LP and yeah I get the broad strokes well enough but details'd be nice (and I'm OCD like that and bored enough to care about dumb referential anime nonsense)

Feinne's LP is worth looking at if you're going to play Rebirth 1 as it makes for a fun compare and contrast where you'll realize that not only is Rebirth 1 much better to actually play but the characters are a billion times more likeable and the jokes can be pretty amusing too. But yeah, the original more or less doesn't matter anymore.

cheetah7071 posted:

Pretty much. One thing from the original game is that the CPUs are actually all horrible people and it's hard to like any of them. Noire goes after Neptune knowing she's lost her memory and prioritizes killing her over dealing with the much more pressing issue of Avenir, ditto with Blanc even as she's losing followers to Arfoire and while Vert comes across as the most friendly, she's quick to accuse Neptune of faking being poisoned by Yvoire as a way to discredit her. Even by the end of the game, none of them really like each other at all and are just banding together to stop a common threat and in the true ending, all decide to stop being CPUs. None of them are interesting or likeable enough to care about. Even the main trio of Neptune, Compa and IF aren't overly likeable since IF is much more standoffish to Neptune in it and if I remember right, when Yvoire gave her the poison she was seriously considering using it in the original game.

In Rebirth 1, the CPUs all join your party much earlier on and are generally nicer people overall. Noire does attack Neptune still but feels awful about it afterwards and requests her help in stopping Avenir, Vert and Blanc have bigger issues to worry about than Neptune and gladly take her offer of help, they start to joke around and become friends and realize that the Console War was really, really dumb and IF doesn't seriously consider poisoning Neptune and while is still a foil to her, isn't as much of an rear end in a top hat about it.

Rebirth 1 isn't better than the original just for gameplay reasons, the characters and "story" for what little of it there is are much more fun too.

That's pretty hosed up, I have the disc for 1 but have been avoiding it because it's supposed to be trash to play, but this story difference sounds insane. I might have to read that LP just for shits then

Yeah, they really adhered to the "console war" aspect that even by the end of the true ending, the CPUs still don't really like each other. They just decide to end the war by calling it quits and no longer being CPUs. It's kind of hard to connect and care about the cast where everyone is completely awful.

That's why even though people now give Mk.2 and Nepgear a ton of crap since Victory, VII, the Rebirth remake and ports and the various spinoffs, at the time it was a genuine improvement not only in gameplay but with how the characters interacted with each other too.

Bash Sisters with Compile Heart characters would be fun. I'm still holding out for a Uni spinoff game developed by the Earth Defense Force developers where giant Clydes, Pixelinvaders, Horsebirds and Dogoos start destroying the cities on Planeptune, Lastation, Lowee and Leanbox and Uni has to shoot them all down and blow up all the buildings in the process. Nepgear can provide her with support by deploying a pilotable Nepgeardam to fight against a giant mutant radioactive fire breathing Warechu.

Also you'll run into an early difficulty spike while you're in Lastation for the first time; buy and equip Life Rings when the shop starts selling them, and remember your buffs.

Otherwise, yeah, you can generally wing it, just kill everything you see at least once and make sure you keep accepting new Quests when they pop up. If you care about True Ending, just look up a quick guide, but you can't screw yourself out of it; it'll just make you take a bit longer if you want it.

I'd say that as far as game mechanics go the biggest rookie mistake it's possible to make is forgetting to keep combos up to date, since not having a good combo setup means your normal attacks will be super weak and it'll take forever to build EXE gauge. All three types of combo attack have something you can say for them (although Rush generally dominates the late game), but you gotta specialise your characters in one or maybe two types and equip the strongest available attacks from those types.

It's worth noting that you don't have to go out of your way to actually do all the quests, and in fact you usually shouldn't bother unless the reward is something worthwhile or you're manipulating shares toward some specific goal: just accept them so that if you do want to turn them in later you might find you've already done them.

What are you talking about? I'd totally buy a Hearthfire clone.

That is, a clone of Skyrim's Hearthfire expansion where you run around and build houses piece by piece might be pretty great in Neptunia's high-tech world. Bonus points if it's set in the first game with the floating islands.

Now, a Hearthstone clone, probably not.
