Raimbaud the Champion, Initiate of the Black Templars, former Pro Tempore Castellan of Chapter Fortress on Scolla 808 Raimbaud spent most of his time since arriving on Erioch in solitary meditation and prayer. He knew that his secondment to the Deathwatch was going to test his faith more than anything else ever had. Remmy was not foolish, he knew he had only one purpose here in the Deathwatch, and that was to use his deployment to find the Necrons that assaulted his world and to avenge the death of his Battle Brothers. Only then would he be allowed to return to his chapter. If he were to fail, his only absolution would be death or to abandon his chapter and become what the Deathwatch call a "Black Shield." Really only one of those two is an acceptable option. Once Remmy received the message from the Watch serfs that the briefing was to begin, Remmy finished his Hail Sororitas and made his way to the briefing room in nothing but his simple robe. He grabs the briefing dataslate and spends more time reading it than he does focusing on the words of their Watch Captain; Remmy misses the look the Watch Captain gives him. When the briefing finishes, Remmy looks up to his fellow marines. "Well this should be an interesting mission. The Orks are always a good fight. Their focus is on the waging of war, and some of the purest combat I have had has been against Orks." Remmy furrows his brow, "The Tau should be another challenge entirely. Pyriel Tsavo During the briefing, Pyriel glances between the members of his kill-team, taking in the brothers he'd be fighting alongside from now on. The Fists had an fairly good reputation so far as he was concerned, and he wasn't familiar enough with Dark Angels successors to make a judgement on the Guardians, but the two Iron Hands and the Black Templar gave him some pause. Both chapters had exemplary combat records, of course, but he'd heard disquieting stories about the value they placed on human lives, especially the Iron Hands. Still, like it or not, he was going to be fighting alongside them for the duration of his service. Hopefully he could serve as something of a moderating influence. He glances down at his dataslate and nods slowly at the Librarian. "Yes, the Orks are likely to be a better first target. That being said, I would like to see the situation on the ground before we make a final decision. If the Orks have the Tau at bay on the ground, it might be easier to terminate the Ethereal first. After all, if we decapitate the horde, the Tau might be able to bolster their leader's defenses once the Orks are no longer putting pressure on their lines." ---- Later, after picking up his desired equipment and spending a few hours in a sparring cage to get used to the new power sword, Pyriel heads back towards the armoury. There wasn't any time today, but in the future, he planned to work on his own equipment. To that end, he wanted to find free workshop space. While he was there, he decided to look for some way to learn the history of the armor he'd been assigned. It had been given to him without ceremony or explanation of its history. He knew that the Deathwatch was a busy place that had better things to do than brief an Astartes on the history of a suit of armour, but he couldn't shake the feeling that there hadn't been any kind of fanfare because something was wrong with it. He couldn't put the bad feeling it gave him into words. It just felt like the suit itself was tense, like a drawn breath in the instant before a firefight. Like the suit was waiting for something. If he could find someone who knew its history or a way to look up that history, maybe he could finally shake off these illogical thoughts. Brother Ariel of the Guardians of the Covenant What a charming man, that Watch Captain is. Ariel had heard that that the Astral Claws have been developing a bad reputation in recent years, and At least he didn't mince words. A sun-blasted, toxic ball of poo poo rife with a burgeoning mining colony. Orks. These new upstart Tau aliens. Kill em all. That's it. Simple. Ariel's new comrades seem to be dependable and focused. The Black Templar is apparently here as penance for not dying. For a chapter that prides itself on its dedication to constant offense, outliving your brothers should just be a new chance to avenge them a hundredfold. Maybe sons of Dorn are just like this. And that's the one big problem. The Imperial Fist librarian. Nothing's wrong with him that is, but the Templar might compromise the mission by attacking him at some point. The only hope for smoothing that out is if they find common ground in their shared Primarch. "I propose we deal with the Orks first. While it would most fortuitous for our xenos foes to clash and destroy one another, I worry that Gitsmasha plans to devote his boys to attacking the Imperial dome-habs first. It would actually some degree of sense. They destroy our relatively defenseless settlements to and loot valuable Imperial materiel like weaponry and mining equipment to better arm themselves for the fight against the Tau invasion force. Should the orks win, then they've only come out a much tougher and more emboldened horde. "When the Ork command structure has been beheaded, as Brother Scipio put it, we can leave them to squabble and plan our move agains't the Tau. I've yet to have the pleasure of seeing and killing any Tau in person, but as their primary asset is superior long range power, we'll need to find a way to get in close. If we can infiltrate or rapidly insert ourselves in their bases, behind their big guns, then we can splatter their frail blue asses all over their clean-lined, disturbingly unembellished buildings and vehicles. Cadwgan listened intently to the briefing before turning his attention to his new squadmates. This thought of working with other chapters was not daunting to him, this was not his first time after all with the Iron Hands only being one of nine chapters that had the honour of being part of the Damocles Crusade. Back then he had served along side the Black Templars and one of the Imperial Fists successors, but the Salamanders and Guardians of the Covenant were a new experience, and with the latter being from the far edge of the Imperium, he knew little beyond that they were a Dark Angels successor. In the end it mattered little, no chapter would second a battle brother that would embarrass them to the Deathwatch, so he was sure they would do fine. He was glad to be continuing to serve alongside Torias however; Other chapters just did not understand the need for bionics and it was nice that he would not have to deal with any distain other Apothecaries might harbour. "I suggest we see if there is any more current intelligence on the disposition of the ground forces before we choose the first target. The Captain's briefing had little practical information. If the Orks have truly charged headlong at the hab domes, they are obviously a priority as it would not do to allow the resources Achilus needs to be destroyed. If they broke through the space blockade and immediately engaged the Tau on the ground I feel they are less of a concern. The Tau are a damnably intelligent lot, they are more likely to notice the Ork warboss being assassinated than the reverse, and once that happens they are likely to increase security around their Ethereal. Given the flexibility to do so I feel there is merit in striking the Tau before they know we are there. That said I second the notion of the Razorback. Unless we are intending on going in in scout armor the Land Speeder would be a bit cozy for the six of us." After the briefing I'll head to the Tower of Brass (I'm assuming that's the most appropriate place anyway) to seek out anyone with any intelligence on the deployment of the Tau and Orks on the surface, as well as anyone that can give any more current information on the Tau vehicles/battlesuits so that I might prepare for the mission properly. I'll also head to the apothecarium to get the installation of a bionic respiratory system installed- given the toxic environment and the fact that Cadwgan is still convinced he can hear a rattle in his chest after his recent injuries, now seems as good a time as any to get those pesky lungs replaced. Brother Torias He listened to the briefing with the usual intensity that he approached his studies. While he relished the prospect of dissecting the all-flesh Tyranids, both the Orks and the Tau presented... 'unique' opportunities for research. Orks had unusual qualities all their own, and the Tau - despite their reliance on technology and steel - seemed resistant to the idea of perfectly integrating with it like brothers from his chapter were so keen on doing. Not that he didn't feel the same enthusiasm - he was starting to become more machine than man, and the Black Blood that coursed through him separated him even further from the rest of his Space Marine brethren. However the most peculiar aspect of the Tau had to do with their attachment and obedience to a so-called 'Ethereal' caste. What effect caused this obedience is suggested to be biological in nature, but few in the Imperium knew for certain. "While I appreciate the speed of the Land Speeder, I see that few of you possess the same advantages that I do that would make a trek through Pelegius' atmosphere harmless. The Razorback should be sufficient to safeguard you against the hostile climate." He looked at the rest of his team. He had heard much of the Fists and of their successors, the Black Templars, and regarded both respectfully - these were chapters that appreciated the value of fighting to the last man. The Dark Angel he afforded cool respect - he had no prior opinion, and preferred to let his future actions speak to his valor. However the Salamander - this was one to watch out for. Torias laughed to himself when he heard that he was an Assault Marine, though - at least Torias would probably see him turn around to run away when he abandoned the battle even though fighting on would lead them to victory. Still, should he fall Brother Torias would absolutely risk life and limb to save his gene-seed - his responsibilities as Apothecary went beyond his prejudices. Finally, the other Iron Hand. He couldn't believe that this other Brother was not only from Clan Raukaan like him, but he also participated in Contqual. It was a terrible shame what happened to him, as he was not able to drink the glory of its battle or enact its cruel aftermath, but he was still there. This counted for a lot, and he knew he would regard this brother with as much warmth as a Son of Medusa could muster. Speaking up about the mission, Brother Torias added "I think conditions on the ground should dictate who we attack first - Ork or Tau - but I'm more favorably inclined to take out the Ork's Big Mek first and then fade away to surprise the Tau with our second strike. This will remove the Orks' ability to make much war, as they will be unable to replenish any losses inflicted upon their vehicles - or to appropriate those of others. The Orks will undoubtedly turn their attention towards this attack, which may free us to slip away and strike at the Tau. Finally, while both weakened forces waste themselves on the other, we can finally attack the Warboss. This may leave the Warboss a slightly tougher barricade to breach, but the common troops of both factions may fall to our blades much easier." With that, he turned to Brother Cadgwan. "You say you need additional cybernetics for this mission?" He cracked a smile. "There's no need to leave it to the other Apothecaries here on the Watch Fortress. It would be my honor to bring you closer to the Primarch." Brother Torias then wheeled around to the rest of the team. "And let that serve as a reminder too - should any of you be grievously injured during our mission, I will be more than happy to both heal you and to improve upon your basic design." While perusing the arsenal, he thought of what he might need. Despite his potential in melee combat, his time in the Chapter left him slightly better at ranged combat. Seeing as how they were encountering both Tau and Orks, he would need a load-out that would enable him to fight both effectively. In the case of the Tau, their battlesuits and vehicles are prey for the awesome power of a Lascannon - that weapon would allow them to project firepower well beyond the distance of even the Tau's vaunted Pulse Rifles. For Orks, an Astartes Assault Shotgun with its fully-automatic scattering spray of buckshot would end their ambitions up close, where he could follow-up with his Power Axe. That weapon, should he need to get in close with any opponent, would bring a swift end to the combat. And finally, in terms of more mundane gear, he acquired some restraints. He heard faint voices in the hallway wistfully muttering "If only we could capture an Ethereal" and he thought that such a being would make for an excellent study into the potential weaknesses of said alien race... The main ork concentrations on this world are centered around the Tirmorodan Mountains, or what's left of the landmass. It appears the Warboss ordered them to make planetfall with their ships and most of the mountains have been annihilated.” Indeed orbital picts show Ork camps built up around what's left of the mountain range with the remains of their former fleet. Ork salvage teams and mining gangs are working happily in the extreme heat and toxic environment, building new ships on the sheared mountaintops while a significant force is advancing towards the Imperial Lines itching for a fight. These are the 3 planetary landmarks you know of at a glance from your mission materials Outpost Aleph The oldest and largest of the Imperial settlements on Pelegius, Outpost Aleph is a colossal latticework of shielded, self-contained hab-domes connected by environment-sealed tunnels that span an area more than eight kilometres across. Equipped with powerful vox and augury systems to pierce the interference caused by Pelegius’ background radiation, Aleph serves as the central command centre for all Imperial scientifc and military operations across the planet, and its outermost domes are heavily fortifed to serve as bunkers and barracks for the Imperial Guard and Skitarii garrisons. Tirmorodan Mountains A ring-shaped (former) mountain range enclosing a dune sea some eleven hundred kilometres across, the Tirmorodan region has been the site of more clashes between Imperial and Tau forces than almost any other region on the planet, with neither side able to gain a foothold in the dune sea for more than a matter of weeks. The Tirmorodan Mountains themselves have been identifed as a particularly abundant source of metals valuable for the production of starship armour, while the territory within the ring is believed to be home to one of the largest archaeological sites on Pelegius, though neither side has been able to accurately confrm this due to the almost ceaseless hostilities. The passes leading through the mountain range are heavily guarded and key positions have been extensively fortifed, serving as strongpoints from which both Tau and Imperial forces can launch raids and expeditions into the dune sea. This region is currently infested by the Cybork Pirates and fighting has broken out between all three factions as Tau and Imperial forces are now fighting for their lives. The Orks appear to be building massive artillery batteries with salvaged weapons from their own crashlanded ships, as well as rebuilding said ships on the sheared tops of the mountain range. Azkharraeon Flats Believed to be the location of the primary Tau compound, the Azkharraeon Flats are stable, rocky wastelands in contrast to the shifting sands that cover most of Pelegius, and they are found few hundred kilometres north of the equator. Imperial expeditions have thus far avoided the equatorial regions of Pelegius, mainly due to the extremely high temperatures common there, but Tau physiology is believed to be far more capable of enduring high temperature/low humidity environments, explaining a greater willingness to establish themselves in places where humans cannot thrive. Scouting missions, performed by specially augmented Skitarii, have determined that much of the Tau compound is maintained and operated by drones, directed by a few hundred Tau engineers and scientists. Limited pict evidence of the heart of the compound shows a device that appears to be an extremely potent fusion cutter, believed to be employed to drill into the dense rock of the Azkharraeon Flats, though what the Tau have found beneath the surface there remains unknown. The Tau garrison on Pelegius appears to consist almost entirely of battlesuit-equipped infantry, as conventional Tau combat armour cannot provide adequate protection against the hostile environment. Lighter battlesuits are favoured, and armoured environment suits of a similar design (though unarmed) are used by the Earth Caste personnel on Pelegius as well. If I know Orks, it'll probably be the biggest one, but we can't count on that. Imperial forces on the ground may know more, but it'd be a pity to waste the surprise of a good combat drop. Perhaps if one of their fortifications is weak, we can hit that first and get a better picture of where he is." We likely cannot just drop into the middle of their stronghold without getting shot out of the sky. Then there is the issue of our transportation. Even with much of the mountains leveled, the terrain could still be steep and rocky. The Razorback will do us no good if we have to drive off a vertical cliff to get there. The real question is where can we safely land that will still let us make our way to the warboss with our vehicle?" Looking at the pic captures from orbit, you notice salvaged Imperial Navy Nova Cannons scattered around various parts of the ork encampment. While the guns will take years to restore, the shells that are no doubt stored somewhere deep in the confines of the mountain for safe keeping. Detonation of the stockpile would be disastrous to say the least. Who knows what could happen with that much archeotech destructive power lying about? Might even set the atmosphere on fire. Anyway the Nova Cannon emplacements have a commanding view of the ork encampments and would be an ideal place to make a stand as would any of the mega kannon batteries currently being erected and firing on Tau and Imperial targets in the immediete vicinity. The Thunderhawk is not equipped to perform such an act and you guys do not have the requisite rigging knowledge to prepare a Razorback for such an insertion. Also its a metal box sized target which is alot easier to hit with weapons that matter than you, the individual power armoured Astartes. The closest thing you can do is a rolling start where the Thunderhawk comes in low and fast, takes a shitton of anti aircraft fire (risking being shot down), and deploy you guys onto the runway at speed. You'll have to take Operate (Surface) checks at a -20 to prevent from flipping over because even the fastest a Razorback can go won't be fast enough to ensure a seamless transition from IN THE AIR to OH poo poo ON THE GROUND SUDDENLY. Failure means the Razorback flips and you get to enjoy your very first car crash. The Kill Team Leader is going to have to convince the Pilot that such a insertion is viable and won't get his bird shot down. The Space Marine can be replaced so long as the geneseed is recovered, the thunderhawk is a lot more valuable.

Cadwgan "We should make those Nova cannons a top priority. If the Orks manage to get those things firing it will make everything we do on this planet harder, and as Brother Tsavo says there is a good chance Big Mek is there anyway. Not to mention if one of those blasted Orks decides to use the shells as target practice anyone looking out a window back on Erioch would see the explosion. I suggest we head for Outpost Aleph; Their advanced augury systems should be able to get us more precise information as to the location of our targets, and we should make sure the local commanders have troops prepared to secure the site after we clear it. Then head directly for the emplacements. From there we will have a good view of the Ork encampment to plan the next assaut."

Expediency would dictate our insertion into the camp. Under different mission parameters, say an insertion by drop pod and one target, this would be ideal. But let us not forget, we also must deal with the Ethereal. If we land here without the razorback, then either we will have to make our way on foot to the Tau, or have to be teleported back up to the ship and land yet again, which would negate any expediency gained now. The obvious choice is that we land further away with our Razorback." Remmy glances sideways at their current squad leader. Remmy may currently be disgraced and not trusted with the burden of command, but if their current squad leader honestly thinks abandoning vital mission resources for expediency is the right course of action, then that speaks ill in front of all these first founding chapters.
