with the new viewer and everything, i gotta ask, what episode convinced you to stick with the show? "gem glow" underwhelmed for me, but the sequence in "laser light cannon" where steven sings along to Greg's song convinced me to stick for another 10 episodes. Then episode 12 was "Giant Woman", and that entire episode is amazing. the song, the fight, everything. so for me it's "Giant Woman"

Went into this show knowing it was Rebecca Sugar's show and that it would be good (and i loved the pilot). Gem Glow actually disappointed me a little with how "typical kid's show" it seemed, but i adored Laser Light Cannon, it was exactly what i'd been hoping for. Stuck with the show until the first big hiatus (Rose's Room?), fell off until Alone Together came out. I watched that one twice in a row, then like five more times that week -- it blew me away, just so layered and thoughtful and gorgeous. Went back and caught up on everything i'd missed, and when i hit Lion 3 decided it was my favorite show ever. Have only liked it more and more ever since. A big part of my enjoyment of SU is that it's FOR CHILDREN and the fact that something so smart and empathetic is being pitched at kids, speaking to them and not down to them, makes me deeply happy. misadventurous fucked around with this message at 00:13 on Sep 6, 2016 |

Bubble Buddies is a super sweet episode but Giant Woman is definitely my favorite of the first half of S1. Still one of the coolest action sequences in the show imo.

Getting near the end of S1, poo poo's starting to get kind of very creepy. Hey look a canyon with a bunch of giant bacteriophage space robots injecting poo poo into the rock, this is cool and good and fine. Sup pals, don't bother fighting the death fleet headed to Earth, just give up. Hope this protip helps.

I saw Gem Glow at NYCC 2013 at the SU panel with Rebecca Sugar and IanJ. This was like a week or two before the show actually premiered. I liked it enough, but in a Regular Show/AT kind of way. I didn't really go "Wow, this is truly amazing" until Tiger Millionaire and it just kept ramping up from there.

Now if you think back over S1 you'll notice that the reveal of Garnet was seeded in lots of ways, some incredibly subtle. Like remember how she reacted when she saw Stevonnie? And remember how Pearl and Amethyst once talked about how fusion is hard for some gems, and Garnet was all like "Not me " And this, from Fusion Cuisine, when Alexandrite broke up: That's on-screen for one frame. Long enough for fans to pick up on it (though I still wouldn't have believed it if I was watching at the time, I would have dismissed it as weird indistinct shapes by dumb intern animators + obsessive fan insanity). The moral is that the people making this show are reeeeaaally going all out with it. My favourite subtle clue is just in the background throughout one of the episodes. The gems are building ikea furniture, and you get little glimpses of their progress. In the last scene Garnet has a finished stool and Pearl and Amethyst each have the parts of half a stool and they aren't speaking to each other. First viewing I thought it was just a reference to how badly those two work together, but if you pay attention at the beginning there were three boxes, and Garnet's is taller than the one on the instructions. She took two little stools and put them together to make one big one.
